But how did it all happen? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in The WWF in 1998: A Year in Review.

Mankind the 1st hardcore champion
You're telling facts.
1998 was the best year ever in wrestling period. I'll never forget that year and summer in particular. WWF ECW WCW all at their peak every week and Stone Cold Steve Austin was on top of the mountain more popular than everyone else his shirts could be seen everywhere from the Mall to school. Everyone wanted the nWo Red & Black Wolfpack shirts too. All the fans were happy it was so awesome and nobody chanted it once
Austin had a big bang year in 1998
98 is my favorite year for sure
That and 97 and 2001. 2000 is pretty close too.
@@UniqueAckry I love 1999 too Stone Cold is still on top of the wrestling world so everything was good. In some ways in 1999 WWF got even better but WCW and ECW started making more mistakes.
@@themadrapper101 Yup and Chris Jericho makes his WWF debut and so does Big Show and Triple H wins the WWF title for the first time. So does Mankind but he technically won it in late 98.
1998 for life
Well said.
1998 was the best part of the Monday Night War because it’s when both companies were producing fantastic content and trading victories as opposed to it being one-sided like before and after.
I literally started watching wrestling at 6 years old in 1998 and was absolutely mesmerized. Best year in wrestling history.
Oh boy. What a year 1998 was in wrestling. It will NEVER be topped.
FACTS. WCW and WWF were both on FIRE
It was topped two years later in 2000 which was arguably the BEST year in wrestling.
@@onesaucynougat7471 No way. Although there were bright spots like the Rock, Hardy Boyz, and Kurt Angle, there was too much HHH and Stephanie for my liking.
@@jacobglaser7773 damn that’s crazy. I thought they were a huge part of why 2000 was successful. Triple H always had banger matches with mick foley and Chris Jericho and everyone always enjoyed seeing steph get made fun of.
@@onesaucynougat7471 The bad outweighed the good with those two. HHH was a good heel for better performers like the Rock, Undertaker, Jericho, and Kurt Angle to shut up. HHH's technical wrestling ability is practically nonexistent and the sound of Stephanie's voice puts me off a great deal.
1997 was the beginning of a major shift in the wrestling business, clean cut babyfaces were out the window and heels were starting to get loud reactions from the fans resulting in lots of wrestlers becoming more edgier but 1998 was when everything exploded thus kicking the company's biggest period of all time. Stone Cold became the top guy and his feud with Vince McMahon drew massive ratings, The Undertaker and Kane story was captivating everyone, DX was running wild, every week on Raw was can't miss TV. One of the greatest years of all time and the best thing about all of it, things were just warming up...
It was a big bang
I'd say the big bang was late 96 to be precise, thanks to Sycho Sid, Austin vs Pillman, and Taker vs Mankind creating darker storylines and characters. 1998 was when things shifted to WWE's favor. By 1999 every celebrity wanted to be a part of WWE, reminiscing of the golden age of mid-late 80's.
That actually started in 1996 with the likes of Austin, Diesel (who was a Tweener), Sycho Sid, and the nWo getting cheers despite being heels. 1997 was when wrestling really became popular in the mainstream.
1998, the WWF was lit. I was 16. '98 was the last time I stopped flipping channels back and forth between Raw and Nitro. Never missed an episode of Raw from 1994-2002. Never missed Smackdown from 1999-2002. Now those were my preteen and teen years. Austin vs McMahon, DX vs The Nation, The Brawl 4 All, Taker and Kane's Night of Destruction, Kane's night of destruction, the Deadly Game tournament at that year's Survivor Series. I was there for all of it 💯
So why you telling us
I stopped around 02-03 aswell
Ah 1998, the wrestling, the music, the video games, the nostalgia! :)
What do you think about today,s wrestling ,music & video games in general?🤔🤔🤔🤔
Facts right?
My high school graduation year.
@@zacharythomason7359 thier pure trash speaking of music and games. The 2K series suck with the exception of some great titles likes 2k16 becuase stone cold showcase and 2k14 has a great classic roster only for that matter, also forgot to mention WrestleMania mode. Speaking of the music was supposed to revolve around characters! Today's product characters don't exist their all jabronis as of what I know, with no full compelling aspects their music is mediocre it has no vision or any relation to the people they give it to Def Rebel especially it's corny!! 🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️ It's not the same composer. Jim Johnston was so much more talented and better in every way. Those guys make anything looks like they play around with pro tools too much. All their songs have Gregorian chants, their composition and use of instrumentation is basic they don't make music for someone can listen to it but into it sounds like games on your phone type music and many people would be able to make that nothing special 🗑️🗑️

I was waiting for this one. Great video Andy. Looking forward to the 1999 year in review. This was the Rock at his best
meh i prefer him in 97
I want him to mention Darren Drozdov for his review on the year 1999
@@Aj61406 that should be its own episode
Rock was best in 2000
@@dude-yg9ez he was def better in 2000 then he was in 99
My dad died in 1998 just shy of my 9th birthday, that same month I saw The Rock fell in love with professional wrestling and ever looked back ever since. 🥲
1998 to 2004, Wrestling will NEVER be this popular anymore. Can't wait until you do WWF in 1999.
Totally agree
One of my all-time favourite years of wrestling period! The time when the WWF got so much better than WCW in the ratings of the Monday Night Wars.
It’s literally the year I started watching, everything I know prior to it I had to do my homework on but the first time I ever seen wrestling was Stone Cold getting in Mike Tyson’s face and I’ve been a fan ever since
Do you watch today, s product🤔🤔🤔
@@zacharythomason7359 I don't watch today's wrestling during a pandemic.
@@BCZ21 What do think about today's product?🤔
@@zacharythomason7359 AEW has recently reignited my interest but outside of that I havnt been into WWE since Rock vs Cena …when I say into I mean to the point of tuning into weekly programming. I’ve always kept up with it through internet reviews and CZcams stuff
1997 and 1998 were the best 2 years. If Bret had stayed, 1998 would be undisputed.
It would have been i would have expected the austin and bret rivalry to last through out the attitude era
@@7upox592 Brett didn't have the personality or presence to hang with Austin. Hell, the man has had a career crying about a single night of wrestling that has gone on longer than his wrestling career. He's such a twat.
This year, in my opinion, was the greatest star building year for WWF in wrestling history. Austin exploded in popularity, now being the top guy. Rock’s heel turn gave his character work a boost unlike anything anyone has seen before or ever since. Rock was world champion by the end of this year. The company found a new star in Kane, and his relationship with Undertaker helped make a landmark chapter in the Undertaker’s career and is one of the best long term storylines in wrestling creative history. Mankind took off as a main event enhancement talent, helping out over Austin, Taker, and eventually HHH as future HOF main eventers. HHH’s career was completely turned around with DX, with the group becoming influential to many groups after and has been referenced in pop culture to this day. The midcard was also fleshed out with Goldust, Val Venis, Ken Shamrock, D’Lo brown, Mark Henry, the brood, etc. it was truly a year of creating new stars.
I agree with you but I think undertaker and stone cold were already superstars without mick foley. He definitely helped propel HHH the most out of all those guys.
@@Flowerz__ What was Undertaker’s most famous moment in the AE with? Mick Foley. Who was Austin’s first challenger once he was champ in 98? Mick Foley. Who was Rock’s first challenger when he was champ and made sky high ratings with? Mick Foley. Who helped make HHH a main event worker in the eyes of fans? Mick Foley. Enough said
@@TheMuscleMan2244 I know and I do agree. I just think Austin and undertaker were already fully Over prior to foley. He definitely had historic moments with both. And I fully agree he helped propel HHH to true superstars status with their epic matches especially the royal rumble match. And same with rock with the rock and sock connection and their rumble match as well. I’m not totally disagreeing. Just saying that for undertaker and stone cold those guys were already massive stars without mick foley. They created massive moments together but I don’t think they owe the same to mick as the rock and HHH do that’s all I’m saying. I like your post thank you.
@@Flowerz__ Sure they were already stars but Foley helped open a new chapter in each of their careers. When the spotlight was on Austin as the new face in the thick of the Monday night wars, it was Foley who they put against him first. Foley was also one of the first opponents to actually challenge the Undertaker and match him. Foley helped propel the AE which is why I think he is the underrated heart and soul of that era
@@TheMuscleMan2244 yeah that’s fair. They put dude love against Austin. I’m not trying to take anything way from Mick foley. He is a legend and did A LOT for the wwf/e. But in all reality, is Austin dude love reallt what ppl think about that from tht time period?
That HELL IN A CELL match.... I still remember it clearly.
Same
Appreciate your support bro 💪🏻 yeah man for sure greatest hell in a cell match of all time, I remember watching it back when it happened, couldn’t believe what I was seeing, 98 is my fave year in WWF History

My favorite 2 years of wrestling are 1998-1999 followed by 2000-2001
1998 and 2000 both have strong cases for best year ever but I'll go with 1998 because the overall health of the business was better with WWF and WCW thriving.
1998 is the greatest year in wrestling history. 💯
1998 May be the best but the 2000 for depth
2000 is overrated
@@Dr-Alexander-The-Great no it wasn’t. WWF had a much deeper roster in 2000.
2002-2003
My favorite series on CZcams.

Happy Mother’s Day 🤘🏻
Great videos. Great reviews. Looking forward to 1999 and 2000-2010.
Still gives me goosebumps just watching the year in review! What a damn good year that was for any 12 year old like myself!!!!! When The Rock turned heel that was truly heartbreaking, but in the best way since it suited him. God every single match during that year was fun and had stakes to it. Even the video game was banging.
Thank you for posting today, have a great day
Yessss I was waiting so long! Thank you Andy for another great video!!!
That ladder match at Summerslam 98 is still one of my all time favorite matches. It was the first time I watched a match where it would define two wrestlers' careers, given within a year, both of them would have won the title at least once.
Same here
My love of wrestling started with the 2000 video game WWF smackdown. It’s been wild to watch these videos to see how the old school WWF transformed into the one I fell in love with, and how my favourite character emerged.
97-2001 was my FAVORITE time! 1998 was one of my years where I felt all four main pay per views were AMAZING!
Videos like this just make me more excited for a real jam up channel like Wrestling Bios to cover this period
Well you just got a new subscriber! Really enjoy the entrance to remind us what else happened that year in the rest of the world.
My man!! I've been waiting for this one since you started this series!!
Shawn Michaels getting injured in that casket match was such a flashpoint in history when it comes to the attitude era and the Monday night wars.
1998. What a time to be alive
Back when every belt felt and was important. We had rivalries over even the European Championship. People fought like they wanted the title like it was THE prize to have
Great video !! I been waiting for another one of these
Appreciate it bro
As a 23yo fan then (watching for 12yrs straight), 1998 was the year I could once again admit to watching wrestling without snickery laughter. Best year for WWF. 1987 is a close second, with 1999, 1986 or 2000 for the top 5. The set was cool (new in 1997), the segments backstage were new...watching the Inferno match at a friend's house was a memory I cherish. And just listen to the Austin entrance pops get bigger and bigger and bigger from early to late 98...So much❤
Bro I’ve been waiting for this one!! Keep them coming!
To me 1998 was the last of the best years. The WWF attitude era was undoubtedly the best time in wrestling history. Great video.
1998 was Wrestling at it’s absolute PEAK! Steve Austin was Carrying WWE to unspeakable heights as the WWE Champion, WCW was starting to go into a downward spiral ever since the disaster that was Starrcade 1997, and ECW was wilding too.
Wrong WCW had higher ratings in mid to late 98 than anytime in 1997. Even in the first quarter of 99 WCW had around a 5.0. Wrestling got more popular altogether in 1998 the Nitro ratings increased even though they started losing thanks to Stone Cold
@@themadrapper101 it was back and forth in 1998, but after Jan 1999, WCW never beat WWF in the ratings again.
@@themadrapper101 yep
@@FaysalIsGoated since the Fingerpoke of Doom WCW never recover from it.
@@themadrapper101 Ratings wise you're right as late 97 to early 99 was WCW's peak business wise. But creatively they took a tumble in 98. Their product looked better on paper than in reality. Main event storylines especially rarely paid off and they were burning thru dream matches week to week. Goldberg, the nWo still being able to draw (namely the wolfpac) and the cruiserweights is what kept the people coming before they started losing interest.
WWF had inferior talent, but they were putting out better content.
Another great year in review 98 bloody brilliant these videos are thanks again m8 👍
Yeaaaaaaa this what I’ve been waiting for thank you sir
💪🏻🤘🏻👊🏻
You yada yada’d the best match of all time with UT and Mankind
My childhood !!! Royal rumble 98 was the first ppv my mom ordered. After that every month myself, my mom & sis would tune in to the new ppv. Miss those days !!
You still watch today's product🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
@@zacharythomason7359 I stopped years ago. Probably around 06-07
The best year in WWE history! Austin/McMahon rivalry took over the company, beating WCW after 83 weeks, The Rock's people's and corporate gimmicks, DX invading WCW (while feuding with The Nation), Undertaker and Kane, Hell in A Cell, Mike Tyson, etc. This is the Attitude Era's best year.
Wwf idiot
Now I’m gonna bug u in the comments for 1999 😂😂😂 sorry bro these are good as hell

Hey wrestling with Andy keep these videos coming👍👌
Great video, thanks!!
Great year to be a fan of Wrestling…
I was waiting for so long 😭😭😭
Great video keep up the good work Andy
I believe Mike Tyson's role at Wrestlemania 14 was as the 'Special Enforcer' but parlayed into 'Special Guest Referee' somehow during the course of the match jobbing out Shawn with a quick count.
Been waiting for this one
What a great series, keep up the good work.
I waited so long for this one
Another great one buck
1998 was not only a great year in wrestling but also in rap music.
1997 to 2001 was absolute insanity a era that will never be replicated.
Oh man, like 1997-2003 was my wrestling watching phase and I still remember ALL these wrestlers your talking about and I gotta say I MISS IT. These videos you make have got me drowning in Nostalgia....I am 34 years old and I haven't watched a wrestling match in about 16-17 years. I wish there was some way that I could watch every Monday RAW, Thursday Night Smackdown, WCW Nitro and Thunder and PPV event from late 90's-early 2000's. I want to watch ALL those matches and play WWF RAW , WWF Warzone , WWF Wrestlemania and of course WCW/NWO Revenge! I haven't even thought of names like Saturn, Raven, Al Snow, X-PAC, Golddust, Scott Hall, Bret Hart, Mankind, Faarooq, Ken Shamrock, Dean Malenko, Jeff Jarrett, Vader, D-lo Brown, Owen Hart, The Patriot, Chris Benoit (whose burning in hell right now but was ssoo freaking entertaining to watch) Crash Holly, Val Venus, Chyna and the rivalries between DX and The Nation of Domination and Stone Cold vs. Mr. McMahon's storylines every Monday Night....Your videos are so well done and I remember every match you are reciting like I watched them yesterday! You do one helluva job with these videos my man!
