- YEAR IN REVIEW | The WWF in 1996 (Full Year Documentary)
The year 1996 brought us a lot of great things, in the world of Film we were first introduced to Scream, in music Jay-Z released his debut album reasonable doubt, and in the WWF, we’d see the rise of Austin 3:16. Yes, it was a pivotal year in the wrestling world; as it would be the period that’ saw the Monday Night War’s really get started as, while some key figures would leave WWF, others would begin to rise in their place. So, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in The WWF in 1996: A Year in Review.

RAINMAKER THE KAZUCHIKA OKADA STORY
The 90s were dope. Period. Whatever you were into whether it was music, tv, movies, sports, art…whatever. The 90s were probably the most unified in entertainment because there was something for everyone and almost everyone liked SOMETHING from a genre or subgenre of entertainment they really weren’t into.
Your opinion is right
Your opinion is fact
It was the peak of US society. Since the 90s, we’ve had a slow decay of the culture especially since the introduction of social media. Music, movies, TV shows. Every type of media has become garbage just put out as clickbait.
IT was heaven 😊
1996 wasn’t just a good year for WWE, but pro wrestling in general. ECW was running wild, the NWO was formed in WCW, and Stone Cold Steve Austin began his rise to the top in WWE. Also in my opinion, the Austin 3.16 speech at the 1996 King of The Ring was the beginning of the Attitude Era.
People think Austin immediately became a star after his King of the Ring, but he really didn't truly on the road to stardom until his Wrestlemania match with Bret Hart
@@billblaski9523 there was build up before that WrestleMania match, but you also have to keep in mind that Steve Austin was supposed to be the heel during that build up with Bret Hart, but if that wrestler has good charisma the fans are going to cheer for them regardless.
@@billblaski9523 he was on a roll
Don't forget the WWF debuts of Mankind & Rocky Maivia.
His feud with bret hart started it not that promo. So answer should be either their match at survivor series or WrestleMania. Or early 97 when they had realistic groups like nod
So 96 was easily one of the most important years in WWE pretty much.
As well as WCW.
basically if nash and hall dnt leave and the curtain call doesnt happen the wwe we know now doesnt exist. the nwo would not be formed, nash would beat taker at wm12 meaning no streak hhh wins the king of the ring in 96 meaning austin doesnt so no promo !!! weird how things work
@@Strangegloves And possibly no Attitude Era
Early stages of the Attitude era
It's crazy how many times The Streak was almost broken before it even became a big deal.
I've been waiting impatiently for this one. Keep them coming! 😁
Plenty more on the way 💪🏻
1997 the 1998 1999 only 3 left :(
@@pantherhd1 good job we’ve got the 2000’s after the 90’s 🙌🏾
The year 1997 is going to be a big one. I consider it to be the biggest turnover of creative and talent wrestling has ever seen
Exactly!
Until 2023
@@tmac731 2023 was a big year for the modern product, yes, but it wasn’t on the same level as 1997. The year 1997 LITERALLY saved the company from death with its changes in creative, talent, presentation and financial turnover. The rise of Stone Cold alongside Bret and Shawn’s shoot rivalry basically saved WWF from losing to WCW
@@TheMuscleMan2244 I get what your saying but wwe has broken attitude era record for viewership in 2023. The bloodline story made the wwe reach heights bigger than 1997. 1997 did save the Monday night wars but 2023 was the year that made wrestling cool again
@@tmac731 Uh, the attitude era had upwards of 6 million viewers at some points. When has modern WWE even came close to that? Yes, viewership has increased and we are in a renaissance period, but it’s not on the same level as the AE. Trust me, I was there
Despite losing to WCW, 1996 one of the better years of the 90s IMO. The Boydream Dream, Austin 3:16, Undertaker vs Mankind, Survivor Series, etc.
Huge improvement from 1995.
Thanks Andy for letting me relive my childhood/teenage years!
A transitional, yet pivotal, year in WWE's history. Good video. Hard to fit everything in within the given time I'd imagine.
I feel like Dustin Rhodes doesn't get enough credit. His character Goldust was really the true starting point of the Attitude era, before that WWF was kind boring for a few years as it was transitioning from the Rock and Wrestling era.
More cartoony
Practically no one liked Rocky Maivia until he became a member of The Nation of Domination.
@Justin Sharpe but he was on the roll to become a legend.
I love how casual it is when talking about the Undertaker’s supernatural powers.
These docs are outstanding. So much good work goes into them, but the presentation is so professional and almost ‘Behind The Music’-like.
See how magical clean audio can be for these bits? These are totally enjoyable because of the pace and audio alone. Thanks for these!
Now that you remind me of all of what happened…I still think it’s one of the most underrated years of wwf programming…
1996 the year that Bone Thugs-N-Harmony took over the music world and charts also the year that I started watching wrestling lol.
What do think about today's wrestling in general🤔
@@zacharythomason7359 honestly I don’t like it at all. I’ve tried watching A whole episode of Raw and couldn’t take more than 20min of it. Some of it is alright but tbh most of it is wack. Around 2013-2017 or so the womens wrestling side was alright but even that kind of sucks now a days too. And to be fair back in 1996 I was 5-6 years old so everything as a kid seemed so much better. What about you?
i love these Year in Review series! keep them coming!!!!
Andy, as a kid who grew up in Hawai’i, I had to stay up from: 2100 to 2300 every Monday night, I’d save money JUST for the magazines, and I would go to a neighbor’s place to watch PPV events on his scrambler for free!! Thank you for reminding me of what made me smile back in the day; BEFORE the pangs of adulthood AND the cons which my military service had: lifelong injuries…
I really appreciate this brother.
I still remember the time, as I was just 3, & hated when dad changed the Cartoon Network for WWF, not realising the fact that this would mould our entire generation.
It's crazy to think. If the click never said good bye to each other in the ring, we might have never gotten Austin 3:16
I’ve always thought that the NWO put itself out of business before it even began. Amazed Austin 3:16 was said on WWF PPV before NWO was said on WCW PPV.
Whilst winning King Of The Ring gave Steve Austin exposure and gave us that legendary promo it wasn’t until the feud with Bret Hart that he got anywhere near top of the card, he was feuding with Savio Vega and doing pre show matches on the PPV’s so even if Triple H won Austin still would have risen feuding with Bret which he was doing on an overseas tour earlier in the year too.
@@My19812011 oh no doubt man. I just mean we probably wouldn't have gotten the speech itself

2002 & 2003 was when ratings declined b/c of bad writing (ex: Katie Vick). Great matches by the Smackdown roster though.
1996 was the slow climb back to the top for the WWF. All the building blocks for the Attitude era were there:
Austin
Rock
HHH
Foley
Undertaker
Glenn Jacobs
Road Dogg
Billy Gunn
You also had the more "perimeter" guys like JBL and Ron Simmons on board too.
Well done! Listen, I'm watching through the Raws of 1997 and so on, so I needed my history.
Thank you Mr. Andy.
I have to admit, your videos have help me to enhance my vocabulary range, as well as the listening and speaking skills. Finally, your channel helps me to gain more knowledge.
There's a mistake: at It's Time, Marc Mero defeated HHH by countout, he didn't get his title back.
Couldn’t wait for this drop!
Great retrospective, Andy!
Great video per usual. Really enjoy this series
Not gonna lie, probably my favorite year of wwf…(this coming from a guy who actually like the NEW GENERATION).
96 was the year i started getting into wrestling. cant wait to see 97 and 98
Do you keep up with today's product?
@@zacharythomason7359 it’s hideous
Everyone says Diesel was the lowest drawing champion but HBK was actually drawing less in terms of house show attendance and PPV buyrate
@Justin Sharpe not
Eddie Guerrero is lowest
Love these! Great stuff!
Oh yess please... The squad can wait online for me. I'm first watching this, 96 was my first actual year as a wrestling fan. And being pre internet in South Africa I didn't even know about WCW so this was all I had!
Love these man looking forward to the next one
Hell yeah! I know it'd be asking waaay too much, but I wish we could get the next 5-7yrs daily! Lol. '97, '98, '99, '00, '01, even 02, and '03 were all great years
I actually just started watching WCW 1996 and on and I’m going to pick up WWF when I hit spring of 97 cause I heard that’s when we start seeing the beginnings of Attitude Era.
Watch from the build to survivors series 96 - good Bret and Austin stuff
Actually the beginnings of the Attitude era really started with Dustin Rhodes character Goldust, unfortunately he doesn't seem to get as much credit as everyone else.
@@mjareacts2731 nah there had been loads of gay characters in wrestling before Goldust. Plus he debuted in 1995 which certainly wasn’t the start of the attitude era

Great recap video
So then, I think, 1997 was my all time favorite year of wwf…
I just found this channel absolutely amazing work well done
You gotta include wcw in the 96 review. This was the most important year in wrestling history imo
Great video upload again enjoyed watching it look forward to the next one thanks again 👍
Great viedo keep up the good work
Your vids are legit quality.
Any chance we will see a revamped look at the fall of Johnny Polo and the rise of Raven?
What About Me just got suggested as the next video to this. So ummm... thank you? 😆
I look at WWF 1996 as two years, the first half being Late New Generation Era and the second half being Pre Attitude Era. It feels like a hybrid of both of those eras and that to me is why its so fascinating. You had some amazing matches during this time like Bret Hart vs Austin and Yokozuna vs Vader. You had Mankind vs Undertaker in the boiler room. You had Jake the Snake and Ultimate Warrior returning. You had Goldust kissing Ahmed Johnson and Sunny, Marlena and Sable dancing around. You had wrestlers like Salvatore Sincere, and Aldo Montoya (who teamed up with Jake Roberts) and Mantaur (who was still there as Goldusts bodyguard). And it was the year that Vince Russo started working his 'magic' too with the 'genius' move of fake Diesel and fake Razor Ramon. But overall I really enjoyed this year, its the time when I was really into wrestling as a kid. I thought Wrestlemania 12 was really solid too.
It was a huge transition in one year.
Russo didn’t start on the creative team until early 97
@@Davis84396 i'm pretty sure fake razor and diesel were his idea, and they debuted in late '96
LOVE these Year in Review Vids.
Great to reminisce and even fill in some gaps in my memory 🤣
Keep up the awesome work. 👏👏👏👏
Appreciate the support man, love the nostalgia! Next edition coming this Wednesday
I’ll still always say the greatest thing HHH did in his career was the curtain call as in the end we got Austin
Let's not forget 2Pac released his debut album on Death Row All Eyez on Me that went double platinum
Double Platinum LOL?, 5x platinum in two months, 6x platinum by September 1996, and then he died. Jay Z was like nobody in 1996 his album only went Gold, 2pac was the biggest rapper back then.
WWF in 1996 Rockz!!!
Have been waiting 😁😁😁for this
This brings me back!
It’s like goin to blockbuster again. Lmao
But can we do some year reviews for wcw 1990-1999 🤔
Good video retrospective of 1996, however just two small corrections. The date for that years Royal Rumble was actually January 21 and the In your house 6 PPV was February 18.
These years in review are my favorite.
This is probably the most interesting year in wrestling
1996 was an amazing year for the whole world.
Wrestle With Andy 3:16 Said this video is freaking awesome So Watch this video by Wrestle With Andy about one of the most important years in wrestling history it's the year about the WWF In 1996
Great video!
I feel the Hart v. Michaels Ironman Match only gets called overrated by some because, when you know the outcome, the slow build drama of a 1-0 overtime finish is severely diminished. Though, I do have bias, as at the time I backed Bret Hart and my best friend backed Shawn Michaels. We had become friends over our mutual love of wrestling 4 years earlier, long before anyone else in our school got into it in the Attitude Era. So, the match has some strong nostalgia for me.
Awesome video!! Still think Owen should've won the world heavyweight title atleast once.
Also I find it interesting that Vince changed the finish at Mania between Undertaker vs Diesel 🤔 does that mean Diesel would've won that match if he didnt leave?
No Doubt 1996 was a big changing point in the HISTORY of the Wrestling business!!
In a perfect world they would of held back on Austin vs HBK and instead had “The Black Hart” Owen Hart, who was legit over with fans at the time, avenge Bret by beating HBK to win that WWF title at Wrestlemania
The. we could of seen Owen slowly go from face to heel and by the end we get to see Stone Cold dethrone the man who broke his neck at Summer Slam. Bringing it all full circle
About the Taker vs Diesel Mania, I do believe that's what Kevin Nash suggested - I can't quite remember where it was... Stone Cold's Broken Skull Sessions, maybe? - that if he hadn't been leaving, he probably would have won that match... Which I can absolutely believe, seeing how he manhandles Taker pretty much from beginning to end, only to have that strange, out-of-the-blue reversal at that end and Taker getting the pin.
I just got Taker's Tombstone dvd set, and was left thinking "what the heck did I just watch?" when I watched that match. Love Taker to bits and pieces, but even I felt like Diesel had been robbed of that win after being so dominant throughout the match...
@@josephgrace5955 man the wwf would have died Owen was good on the mat but had zero charisma.
@@2gunzup07 BS Owen had more charisma then Bret.
@@lexkanyima2195 heel Bert no normal Bert i can agree

This was the year I started watching wrestling. What a great year
What do you think about wrestling today & WWE in general🤔
@@zacharythomason7359 Well, it is obviously not what it used to be. Times change and with it so does everything else. I do still watch it though. Definitely miss the past though
I started in 97 i was 8 years old when i started to watch wrestling
Very cool channel. I just found you. Are you doing WCW & ECW years in review as well? Just curious.

I wonder who the Marines where that beat up HBK 🤣
I was at that wrestlemania 12 & met Yokozuna gotten his autograph & took a picture with him
One of the greatest years ever.

Great content
I miss the wrestling of the 80s' and 90s'.
Shawn Micheals wasn't beat up by a "group" of Marines, it was only one Marine lol.
It happened in my hometown, Syracuse, it was a few dudes, smashed his face through a car window. Shawn the Goat though.

First time i have heard diesel was supposed to go over taker in mania 1996. We almost didn't have a streak...
Let’s go
97-01 gonna be good’uns. WWF at its peak
I just bought,"RAW Best of 1996 Prelude to Attitude"DVD 3 days ago it is really GOOD.
Jun 96-may97 was the best year in wrestling
The Jay Z shoutout 👍🏽 😄
Concentrate on this seris it's really intertaning
Paul Bearer's treachery was such a shock.

Wrestling Bios and Wrestle With Andy both have their Merits.
I consider 93-95 to be rather stale for the WWF but this is the year things got interesting again.
Wrestling in General was really good to watch, NWO in WCW, ECW rising up, and finally Stone cold and Rocky Mavia showing up in the WWF
Fyi Taker actually won that Buried Alive match before being buried.
Wrestold with Andyz on 1997
I need 1997 🔥
Would’ve loved to have seen a rematch at wm13 of hart vs Shawn then build up For either the Trilogy match at wm 14 or Survivor series of 97 but I know what would happen to stone cold’s push
