China's Lunar Base and Bill Nelson: The Dangers of Scientific Ignorance

  • China is on track with its three-phase plan to have a lunar base by the 2030s, while NASA's Bill Nelson has said the US will do the same by the 2040s. The United States has become so complacent that we don't even appoint knowledgeable people to powerful positions any longer.
    If China controls cis-lunar space, how likely is it that American or European spacecraft will get clearance to land?
    Let's look at China's progress on their International Lunar Research Station,
    and listen to the latest brilliant exchange between American politicians.

    Boss, Ensign has an unrelated question: if the Earth's magnetic field diverts cosmic radiation from the surface, is it possible to create an artificial magnetic field of sufficient strength and dimensions to protect spacecraft in space or structures on Mars or the moon? Alone or in combination with other means, like regolith, water or other substances? Thanks!

    • @PaulSpades
      @PaulSpades Před 15 dny +1

      The thing with Earth's magnetic field is that it's not very strong (0.67 G) but it extends over a great distance. Wikipedia says a fridge magnet is 100G.
      If you wind a couple of copper coils around a spacecraft, you should be able to do much better than the Earth's magnetic field in terms of field strength, and the extent of the field depends on the medium around the craft.
      You need continuous power, or course. And you need to design your radio equipment to stick out of the field with antennae, or place it at the pole and take into account any distortions - but the poles will not be protected. It's a complication when it comes to communication, but probably very solvable.

    • @terranspaceacademy
      @terranspaceacademy  Před 15 dny +1

      The theory is sound and with superconducting magnets... All you have to do is charge them and they'll operate without further power. (With some slow loss of course) Look at the MEEST system by Neutron Star Systems out of Germany. They have the best current design it seems.

It can work as storage for equipment that isn't needed yet, back up supplies. A docking station for when 4 astronauts go down to the moon, so the Orion and the lunar lander don't have to waste resources. A place for other partner countries to go to (probably on Space X) if they can't afford to land on the moon. A back up port in an emergency. And of course, the Orion (designed under NASA director Mike Griffin) can't get to low lunar orbit and the Orion has an almost unlimited lifespan when docked. Also, NASA has had to mostly jury rig the whole lunar mission due to changing goals and lack of money. Investing in things that might be able to be used for going to the moon. I was originally skeptical of it way back when it was still called the LOP-G. But I looked into it and it does provide improved mission functionality.

    Nelson's appointment is a political payback for his support of another individual who knows little about the real world. Our biggest problem is our "go it alone", in most cases, attitude, going to space is expensive and without partners to with the cost and engineering it just too expensive to pull off.

    After reading the comments I have to point out that this is for the budget committee not the science committee. I know I have seen Nelson explain to the science committee that the far side of the moon is only dark for two weeks. This is politics, and Nelson has done a decent job of getting more money for NASA in his time at NASA, which is his job. The budget lockdown forced on NASA could be worse, Imagine NASA getting by on 22 Billion instead of the 25 billion it is getting, and the people he is talking to are the ones who make that decision. Being seen as talking down to them or confusing them with facts only gets you less money.

These are the people who can make it another 2 billion dollar loss. Notice how he was very careful not to blame them for the budget lock down? Congress people don't like it when things get cut from their states and districts. They might just take it out on NASAs next budget.

      I don't mean that as I wish him dead but in the bigger scheme of things do you wish the Soviets had won? To me he was the greatest rocket scientist/engineer of all time. Worthy of the two Nobel prizes he was denied by the Soviet Union and more deserving of acclaim than even Von Braun. He did however have the misfortune of being born in and having to work for an authoritarian state that sent him to prison for daring to stand up for a comrade. I served to protect the US and the world from that regime and do not lament its passing. Too bad the US is trying to mirror them now.

    the fact that China seeks to settle the far side of the moon given the only perk beyond radio astronomy it would provide is stealth should be a big concern, especially since they've already demonstrated the ability to take out satellites in orbit. LRO could be blinded, then they'd stockpile everything for a nuclear reactor out of sight. You play around with the isotopes and you can get the most strategically useful weapon ever devised I would argue. That is on top of being able to deploy sub-orbital response to any competitive settlement. China's space program does not seem to have much scientific goals built in, but I could be wrong on that.
    Much of this conflict is out of civies' access in terms of clearance, just putting together a few headlines and extrapolating.
    Carbon fiber third stage starship in the payload bay would be awesome for dropping to the surface imo, brass should look into that if they already aren't . I have no idea where refueling would fit in a rapid response architecture so to speak.
