    I'm so glad I discovered your channel. I've forever been an admirer of the black cab drivers knowledge of my favourite city.
    Many years ago I read a book by a London cab driver, it was called Share my Cab by Robert Buckland. This was a great book and sadly out of print long ago.
    I think it is so important to maintain the tradition of the London black cab, when faced with so much competition from Uber and other private hire companies.
    During this Pandemic I think people have come to appreciate the value of a specially designed, made for the job vehicle, which separates passengers from driver giving not only privacy, but a safe environment in which to travel.

    It differs a bit from the Swedish taxis. We have picture-ID that shuld always be visibel to the client. Usualy, now adays, our meter is a android app on a tablet that is connected to the car. The app is synced to google maps, so the cabbie will alway have navigation to their destination, which is good as the main part of the work is publicly founded rides (transportation of sick or disabled people). These can take you on a wild jurney around half of sweden. Also, you can bring the tablet outside the car an accept rides while you are doing other things. I have worked 11 years as a cabbie and 5 years as a dispacher.

      I'm in Rehabilitation power wheelchair I can tell u now from my own experience i will never ever use black cab again unless its van shapped one mentioned below in old days wen my mum, her partner, my nan and her best friend wen all were alive we would book a E7 taxi its like mini van ton room and slightly bigger head room as well as full width ramp having telescopic ramps are incredibly extremely very very stressful us special needs people have enough to put up with without stress of trying get into black cabs. I had many many incidents were by either taxi driver is grumpy as hell, not co operative or very helpful like wen my mum died my brothers told cab driver to push me into house seemed nice enough but wen I got home he dumped in the street this was manual chair at time neighbour had to help never felt so embarrassed we did report it but all id I gave they said it doesn't match there records so don't no what or who this cab driver was. Taxis been around hundreds years first powered by horse and cart absolute fascinating and intriguingly interesting history but you need to be exceptionally clever awesome memory and hand eye coordernation I can't even remember what I did this morning let alone remember all road, places, buildings names etc etc remember it been completely more harder as back then streets were exceptionally so narrow u can basically knock on ur neighbours window with out leaving ur house there was set etiquette of living the elderly, infirm, disabled and poor lived amongst filthy rat infested slums and waste, rotting human/animals bodies, food and waste humans and animals pass each day including the neighborhood waste more money u had higher the tenement u lived in and further away from vile stench.
      Due to such narrow streets public transport had to be inventive and creative here in Edinburgh Royal Mile was only street to start with due to government laws they were only allowed to build up not north to south or east to west in beginning it was just straight up some were 17stories so haphazardly there was huge tenement collapse as high street is built on top of original city under ground at one point there was hundreds upon hundreds street names lost for ever some partially due to covid people have time to notice these things but every so often people are finding snippets of history its making people stop and think. London also like Edinburgh had hundreds Churches, Asylums, Work houses and pubs or Taverns as there called as had room were dozens spent night again if poor u didn't get fed maybe little stale bread and ale u had choice depending if u could afford it one long bench everyone sat on u were not allowed to lie down the inn keeper had watcher any found breaking strict rules regulations got told off if still not behaved they were out same for lowest cost penny a night i think u got very thin bench with rope on front that u leaned on then the one that got u food, ale or gin and are allowed to be supine was coffin box with little straw to lie on fleas and lice must been absolutely atrocious and utterly rampant as for smell i wont go there this was last stop before dreaded work house that was barbaric very very cruel hideous degrading and humilitating places even the elderly, infirm and special needs were made to work any way ive yapped enough sorry i changed subject
      As for missing things u would thought it be compulsory to have medical kit in cab i no new rules and regulations are coming into force depending on the job but basically u need certificates for manual handling, health and safety, advance first aid in the work environment sure this course will show u how to use a Israelis bandage can't spell its advance wound dressing for massive blood loss also celox powder same thing just not bandage I believe if possible basic first aid should be re taught at school the woke generation stopped it even home economics and wood work not taught u never no wen it be needed it could well save a life another item that's also good as make shift tourniquets is adult and child size very strong belts it is what we were taught in first aid with amount children being fatally stabbed in London u need several belts and ton Israeli bandages but I think u need to be fully trained to use them. Also having decent torch is vital in the dark I no mobiles have them but lumens not very bright. Friend that I knew who was cabbie took 2 thermos flasks with him one homemade soup one hot drink it just depending on individuals and there preference I guess ur fairly new to being cabbie if so the seniors will look after u give u plenty tips and ideas I wish u all best

    15:30 - Best advise, everyone who owns a car should take their wheel nuts off (you can do them 1 at a time so don't even need to jack up car etc.) and copper slip them. Mechanics rarely use the stuff anymore and new cars come with them assembled dry (for cheapness) - I've used copperslip on almost all fasteners on my vehicles for decades and when it comes to removing bolts it is a dream. I've seen a newish car needing a 6 foot of scaffolding on the brace to get the nuts off only to find the wheel is then seized to the hub and had to be battered off with a 4x4 fence post from behind. Not good.

      @Lancashirelad That was not a practical solution given the location, however I have done that before, I drove a Discovery around a field for 15 minutes with the nuts loose and it still didn't come off. 4x4 fence post worked in the end!

    How are you finding your London Cab in terms of reliability and any errors/warnings you've had? City miles are typically more harsher than motorway miles, and I'm assuming you've covered a fair amount of miles, have you had any issues? Warranty claims?

    • @TomtheTaxiDriver
      @TomtheTaxiDriver  Před 3 lety

      30k + miles. Tyres still good and wearing evenly. Plenty of life in the brake pads thanks to regen braking.
      Warranty issues included: squeaking bushes, 3x new windscreens, passenger door hinges dropping, cracked header tank/cap. And the odd software glitch that is fixed by soft resetting the cab.
      I have made a video about the benefits and drawbacks of this cab on my channel 👍🏻

    I drive a London Cab (TX4 series) in Perth, Western Australia. It’s fascinating to see what is inside a newer London Cab in London; I wasn’t expecting the centre console to be so bulky. I don’t know if you are independent or affiliated with a company but in my cab, I am affiliated. I have an MTI computer mounted above the air vent. The MTI can offer me cover jobs and statistics of my surroundings like number of hails, bookings, taxis plotted, etc: in an hour in a particular areas.

    Quick question, I might have accidentally missed it during the video, but do you keep a first aid kit of any sort in your car? Main reason I'm asking is that where I live we are legally required to have an emergency/first aid kit, a warning triangle, and hi-viz vests in our cars at all times. Just wondering if that is not the requirement in England or if its simply something you haven't mentioned because it would be an obvious thing to have as a car owner.

    • @TomtheTaxiDriver
      @TomtheTaxiDriver  Před 3 lety +3

      It’s not a requirement in the UK, only when travelling to Europe. 👍🏻

    Hi
    Nice Channel, I'm also a green badge 26 years, i left for about a year in Match 2020 and came back May 2021, I left because of lockdown etc, I went for my class 2 lorry licence and ended up doing vehicle recovery work for 4 months , it was fun driving a big recovery truck but it wasn't fun when it was pissing down hard loading up a car.
    We need more cabbies like you on CZcams, I share the cab with big brother, he's been out since October 1989, he's a proper die hard cabby, he ain't a lazy sod like me, we own a tx4 66 reg, it's freehold, he works days I work evenings into early hours, I make a quick onner or plus and I'm off home, we put into utag twice each, I'm subscribed to your channel, you got loads of followers (subscribers)
