Electric London Taxi

  • We take a look at a 100% electric taxi. Unlike the new London Black Cabs which are a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5L petrol engine, this Black Cab is pure electric. This London black cab has been given a second life by seamlessly integrating it with an electric drivetrain out of a Nissan Leaf. Now there's no need to scrap these great cars after 12 years purely because of emissions. If cities truly want to adopt low emissions public transport then THIS is the way. Not only is it 100% electric but it's also re-purposing and recycling what we already have. We talk to the company responsible for this amazing vehicle, take a look under the bonnet and pickup my first fare.
For more information on this car, and future electric black cabs, contact:

To be honest, some of the newer EVs are probably more practical due to regenerative braking & a few other features. But this has the cool factor. The drivers might have to spend a little more time not driving to charge (even with the 30-minute charge time), but they're also saving money on electricity vs gas.

9 hour shift at 10 mph average (London!!)

Unless you're doing airport runs shouldn't be a problem.

  • @Tarry_Plaguer
    @Tarry_Plaguer Před rokem +9

Any form of fleet vehicle is an obvious choice for electric conversion. The commuter buses for hotels and motels to the airport are another obvious choice. Delivery vehicles in high urban areas as well. I have seen some emergency vehicles that have switched to electric, as well as "Meter Maid" vehicles for the police. If it spends it's whole day running short trips and always returns to a home base charging area, then there is absolutely no good reason not to convert.
Also, as companys like WiTricity start getting into alternative charging using magnetic resonance, you will see areas at airports and parking structures where you just drive over a pad and your vehicle starts to charge up. Anyplace where cars rest for any period of time can quickly become a charging station for your car.
It may take awhile, but the technology to make an all electric mass transportation system feasible is already here. We just need to do it!
And as self driving cars advance, your electric taxi may not even need a driver. Of course that will be a good reason for taxi companies to NOT want to convert. Oops. 😜

Makes me so happy to think of the amount of diesel being displaced so effectively. Seeing more and more EV taxis from Glasgo cabs, Leaf’s and MG5s seem to be the favourites.

Maybe it might be enough for a semi retired driver just looking to get out of the house for a few hours but they like nice cars that’s partly why they are doing it, a box on wheels isn’t going to cut it. Then we haven’t even talked about price and I can’t imagine it’s going to be much less than 25 probably closer to 30 for that money I can get a second hand model s no competition faster more range more comfortable better stereo and will hold its resale value a lot more. Sorry to be so negative on this but outside of London this just isn’t enough.

      @scraverX Před rokem +2

You would possibly be quite surprised how far that battery capacity could get you. It is not at all like 120 miles worth of fuel tank in an ICE vehicle.
For a start, an EV uses almost no electricity (outside of running ac or heating) when it is stopped at a light or in traffic. ICE does.
Next regenerative braking trickles a percentage of charge back into the battery every time you lift your foot from the go pedal.
As for the 120 miles in 4-5 hours most professional drivers in most countries are required to take regular breaks, every time you take your coffee break you plug the cab in. 15 to 30 min on a DC fast charge and your battery is at 80% or so which is in the region of 96 miles.
Say, for example, a lot of your fares come from sitting ‘on rank’ at an airport or hotel cab rank. With infrastructure in place you could get in a 5-10 minute charge while waiting for your next fare.

The main rationale for councils to limit the age of Taxis and PHVs is to do with vehicle safety!
Older cars are more likely to have hidden corrosion that could make the vehicle behave in a far more substandard way compared to when the vehicle was new.
Taxi / PHV inspections are far more rigorous than the MOT inspection, partly to adress some of these issues, but hopefully the authorities couls start recognising a certification, whereby a full structural assesment is carried out when a vehicle is repurposed, and thereby extend the age requirement.
Great idea for inner cities, I only hope that it can be made to work!

Just a minor correction but we have the Nissan dynamo electric taxis in London which are 100% electric though no longer available to buy. The range on that is approx 150 miles in good weather and that is viable for some drivers though for most drivers we'd need a real life range and not WLTP of about 200 miles at least.
It's a great effort at repurposing old stock but currently TfL have the 15 year age limit imposed on all taxis including the fully electric Nissan so you'd need to overcome that hurdle initially and then face the biggest one which is convincing drivers like myself (and I'm pro electric) to buy one at whatever price point you decide to set.
Great job though and wish you guys the best of luck with it all.

Another thing, because i'm an audio and video technician, it's a nice car to build a small "Outside Broadcast Van" out of it. Screens and all in place of the back seat and de technicians with the backs to the separation wall.

There's a company hear the east coast in Canada that converts used Corolla frames and suspension to light-duty electric trucks. (The climate there is pretty rough on the bodies.) Most of their customers are in the northeastern seaboard of the US. There isn't really a great ICE option for urban delivery vehicles in North America. Most of our vans are either too bulky, complete crap or both. My question with conversions is how easy will it be to convert to the next generation of batteries. From what I've seen on your vehicles, it looks like it will be a lot less work than the initial conversion.

It’s been on the market for a while hasn’t it?! One other question is what is the deal with road tax after the conversion? Some of the newer taxis from after 2006 are getting hit with very high road tax as diesels with the old 2.7 and 3.0 Nissan TDi. Can you update the registration and get EV tax rates?

Think I’ve just answered my own question re the TX. Didn’t realise it was a range extended hybrid! I guess it will only be a hop skip and a jump away from full electric as and when more taxi drivers get used to charging between fares and charging facilities improve. Charging either away from home or on street for those of us who can’t charge at home (and let’s face it that is most of us living in towns and cities across the U.K.) still seems to be the biggest unsolved hurdle!

I think they missed a trick. Unlike the new LEVC TX these TX4's don't have the sunroof. So why not have a small peel and stick thin film CIGS PV panel to just trickle charge things up.
I have mentioned this elsewhere but why aren't the battery packs insulated against the cold? What aren't HVAC lines? If they're using a Tesla 11kw charger then why not use their heat scavenging system.
As a working vehicle they should be looking for every gain in efficiency that they can. But I'm an idiot so I'm probably wrong.

Could these converted and recycle electric Taxi idea, be carried out on an older FX4 Taxis?
Along with could these converted and recycle electric taxis, actually be modified into a private wheelchair accessible vehicle?
Maybe with a new wheelchair space, being located in the front passenger seat or luggage space area too?
As well as with the interior taxi petition behind the driver recovered totally, plus with a new built in remote operated power slide out or folding out, wheelchair ramp system fitted too?
Similarly with the option, of these old converted and recycled electric taxis, allowing for a disabled driver with hand controls.
Actually driving from their own wheelchair, or transferring from their own wheelchair, to the likes of a remote operated and rear and forward sliding transfer seatwhich
This would put to use old wheelchair accessible taxis, to a secondary use as fully electric privately own wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Especially as if the option was offered, that disabled drivers, could drive one of these converted and recycled electric taxis.
That is either from their own wheelchair, by interchanging the drivers / front passenger plug-in and lock-down seat, being taken out to allow a wheelchair to be locking in place instead.
With the vehicle having, standard disabled hand controls, fitted for the disabled drivers use too.
Or by the driver seat, modified and mounted on to a remote operated rear and forward powered sliding rail transfer seat system.
Where the disabled wheelchair user, basically just transfers from their own wheelchair, to the transfer seat in the rear position.
Then the transfer seat slides forward into the driver position for driving, while the wheelchair is stored in the rear large passenger access space area.
This would or could provide disabled drivers and disabled passengers, the chance of buying fully electric wheelchair access vehicles in the UK 🇬🇧.
As there are very, very few electric fully disabled accessible vehicle, avialable in the UK!
Maybe one or two new Electric WAV's, are currently available to buy in the UK 🇬🇧, for private owner disabled wheelchair passengers.
But nothing for disabled wheelchair drivers at presently, which these converted and recycled electric taxis, would fill a gap in the market here!
