Not only are your videos so fun and informative, but reading the comments I can see such a fantastic community of people your channel has attracted! Nice!❤✌👊
The comments and community is so much part of the whole channel. It's a whole supportive family
The entire channel is amazing ..no hateful rhetoric . Fantastic!
I will never take a slab of concrete for granted again! I had NO idea there was so much infrastructure. Excellent job; can't wait to see the pour.
I'm not so sure this is because he is in Alaska. I live in Missouri and had a barn built on gravel. I later filled the entire inside with cement, and there are no footers. That was 10 years ago and its been fine and I park trucks, cars, tractor, etc on top.
I know, right? So complicated!
I know this sounds like overkill but it’s really not because they don’t want to lose all of their heat through the floor.
I’ve been a member of the Laborers Construction Union in Boston MA for 33 years. Primary working in deep building excavation (slurry wall and sheet piling) and heavy civil (bridge, utility and large infrastructure). I’m blown away by how much work the two of you get done with just a tractor, hand tools and a general understanding of construction practices. You have saved Tens of thousands of dollars self performing this work and sawing your own lumber. I can attest to the “learning curve” when doing a new project…..I’m currently working on a job installing 72 inch diameter concrete drain pipe. We have been able to double our production after working out all the challenges and brainstorming different ideas. Love videos..and yes a laser level is worth its weight in gold. Huge time saver
I wouldn't be surprised to see you hit a million subscribers yet this year - your videos are fabulous!
Ariel, your dance moves already have plenty of entertainment value IMO.
This was another hard-working project update. Thanks, both of you.
Slabs looking great, don't forget to oil/grease the keyway lumber right before you pour and if you wanna save yourself a pain in the butt make some scrap lumber handles you can pull up from when you need to pull them out. Leverage and handles that are screwed from the concrete side to the inside of the keyway will allow you to pull up with a lot more force than a pry bar. Also while not needed a pencil vibrator is fairly cheap and helps a great deal from stopping air pockets when you do imbeds or keyways, otherwise you might wanna drill a few holes in your keyways to allow air to escape and totally fill under the osb so the concrete doesn't get air locked.
You are 2 of the hardest working people that I have ever seen. Take a break after the concrete is finished.
Unreal! A two person construction crew just completely mobilized and moving along each episode. I'm quite impressed. Thanks for sharing all this "learn on the job" technology. Nicely done, and now waiting for the ultimate pour!!
So simple living alaska isn't so simple after all. You guys are simply amazing.
I am not a bit surprised that you 2 have gotten this far..you 2 are never quitters!!!!
After having spent 4 days in Alaska in June, my husband and I decided that was not long enough to see all of what we wanted to see. We plan on going back to the most beautiful state in the United States.
Honestly, I didn't understand everything that was going on in this video, but I do understand what an immense project this is. Very impressive!!
Sometimes it might be a good idea to look up how to lay concrete on You Tube BEFORE you start the project..😆😆🎶🎶🎶🤡
@@fisch69maybe you should get a life
I was happy to see the root beer floats at the end, but I really think you guys need a hot tub. You deserve it. That was a lot of hard work. I'd love to see an assessment at the end of each video showing how much you saved by doing the work yourselves!
Absolutely agree, they need a hot tub!
Nice work doing a complicated build you have never done before.
One thing I like about this channel, among many, is you don't have an intro that I have to skip past. Video starts and content starts. Well done.
Where’s my old dad when he’d so appreciate this kind of build??? My cement and iron collecting/welding dad, our family hunter and preserver of just about anything … your videos make me miss him more. I’ve said it before, he’d be your #1 fan. I am a #1 fan. Thanks for bringing joy. ❤️
MY FAVORITE ALASKAN CZcams COUPLE 😊!
Guys they make a bit with a hook in it that you put in a cordless drill to twist those concrete rebar wire ties with 😉.
Or perhaps you can make one that’s not above your skill level. Because you’re pretty frugal and genius when it comes to making things you need. 😊
You two are doing an excellent job of reinforcement placement. My background is in Construction Engineering Management for more than 22 years and this is a complicated project. Its great to see a self-constructed "Alaska-slab" reinforced to code with appropriate sized, bent and placed rebar prior to construction. Be x-tra careful with placement of the pex and pressurize the pex for leaks prior to pour. Additionally, its always a great idea to keep the pex pressurized with a visable gauge during the pour so you can see any pressure drop immediately. When calculating/estimating the type (#'s) concrete and moisture content, err on enough to complete the entire pour PLUS at least 10-15% MORE than you think you need for the job and keep it a bit "wetter" than normal to flow around all that Pex. Best of luck and looks good from here.
I love it when people give such great advice 😊
@@Barbara-ui7cyright!? Especially blue collar workers. They don’t skip important info
I KNOW THAT ERIC DESERVE A LOT OF THE CREDIT.BUT WITHOUT YOU HOLDING YOUR OWN THIS PROJECT COULD NOT BE DONE!!!.YOU ARE AMAZING ARIEL ✨️ ❤️ ♥️
As I told you a long time ago, you two absolutely amaze me. It just shows what two people working together can accomplish. I am so very happy for you.
I was literally giggling at the end! 😂 I just love you two. What a fantastic job you did. I am always amazed at what you 2 accomplish together, although by now I shouldn't be surprised. You can do anything as long as you do it together. Much love to you both and all the animals. God Bless
🙏❤
The dynamic duo strikes again. Well done guys.....😊
So much for "simple living alaska". 😊😊😊 I'm a builder in Michigan. It's amazing what you two have accomplished.
Same here in Cali. And yeah these aren't exactly beginner level projects their taking on.
Uh bring yourself up here and say that again. I've been around the world, and yeah, I've seen Michigan. So much for commenting for clicks, because the chicks are hatching and you are where you are.
Bring on the hate, that's where we all get along. At the end of the day, the job still has to get done. Thank you for your Michigan comment, but we're all gods children. Left, right, up, down, who cares? We all live for the next episode of simple living Alaska. If you haven't done it yourself, then speak praise. If you have, I look forward to your story.
@@klonkimo You are a Nut case!!!! It was a positive comment, for what they are doing is amazing. "NUT Case".
@@klonkimo what are you talking about ? He just made a comment that what their doing is not simple, as referenced in the title of their channel. Calm down alittle
My wife and I have really enjoyed watching you kids. Takes us back when we were younger. Long time ago. Cheers
Your going to need a lot of friends for that placement of concrete!!!! Probably twice as many as you think you need.
Y'all should feel ACCOMPLISHED!!!💯💯💯 Talk about a Labor of Love!!!👍👍👍 It's going to be GREAT because yall pour yourselves into your work and do it right!!!😎😎😎 As always can't wait for the next episode!!!👏👏👏 Much Love and Prayers from FL 💖💞🙏🌴💖💞🙏🌴💖💞🙏🌴
Underfloor heating. Good choice. It warms from your feet up. Nearly there. You have done yourselves proud. You have navigated complex problems and over come them. Well done guys…🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥♥
Well done you two. Such hard working individuals.
O' yea, love watching your accomplishments.❤
Wish I had Eric's knees. Haven't been able to work low like that in years. Keep up the good work.
see your alternative chores provide a break while you are doing runs to pick up items required with chickens, bees and the pets taking priority, your chickens have a charmed life
Your teamwork is amazing! Well done you guys!
You two are amazing. Your not afraid of hard work and you aren't afraid to try new things. It looks great. Your going to be so happy when your done and can say you two made this.
Arielle always cracks me up wearing those open-tow sandals to do heavy-duty job. I guess you're good at not getting hurt yourself. LOL....😂👍Those tie-wire are awesome, guys!! Makes your life much easier. Great choice! Your hard-work will pay off when it's all done with state-of-the-art quonset hut. Those chicks are just adorable. Thanks for sharing your video. I always enjoy seeing your progress.
I made a hook that fitted into my cordless drill to twist up those reinforcing ties. Speeds It up and doesn't do your wrist in after a few hundred of them. Set drill on low speed and wind away 😊
A new video from Eric and Ariel may have just made my day! Just saying that it's always a pleasure to see you and what task that you are taking care of and I'm sure hoping that what ever other issues that you may run into your able to resolve them and able to keep the project on track 😊
What I enjoy from you all, is your not afraid of taking on new challenges!!! Great team work! Much love from the land of 10,000 lakes .
You might think about doing a walk away split on the honeybees. I'm not sure if that works in Alaska, but it's not hard and you won't have to order bees. They will likely do a false swarm as a practice run, so keep your eyes and ears open!
You two impress me so much in your stamina, dedication, and skills!
What an AWESOME accomplishment!!! Can’t wait to see the concrete pour and the finished floor!!! Again….AWESOME work!!!
I just read about a 7.3 earthquake in Alaska and my thoughts and prayers are with you. I sincerely hope you are both well and safe. Best wishes from Greece.
Alaska is very seismically active. Also large. The recent quake occurred off shore of Alaska's outer islands. About 1500 miles from Eric and Ariel. That would be about Budapest to Athens. The frequency of earthquakes throughout Alaska is one of the reasons for the use of rebar in the concrete and remaining above ground and low profile with the builds. The bowed shape of the quanset hut also provides additional structural strength and stability.
@@akomni-vr5gt Thank you for the clarification. I'm glad they are far away from the epicenter.
@@damaxpowerway Thank you for the clarification. I'm glad they are so far away. Living in a country where earthquakes are relatively common and to be feared, I was alarmed. :)
Wow! So much work to get a strong, level concrete pad! That pad will never move! Once the concrete is there, you can start building the building. Can't wait.
Loved the root beer floats very patriotic too, glad to see you weren't using Ben & Jerry's lol🎉
That building is going to change your life. Great people, great content, great channel.
You guys rock and the fact that two of you are doing all of this is amazing.
..what I love is how all these 'builders' who have probably built more than I ever know give REAL suggestions on how to do things..these guys are probably 70/80 yrs old and watching from their retirement chairs..🥰😇🥰..
They have great followers as subscribers wouldn’t ya say❤😊
This whole vlog is incredible. Amazing what two focused hard working people can do with determination. Great video!!❤
Massive space + heated and insulated floors! I think you guys should just move in there when you get it finished!!
It might even be nice enough for their chickens to live in!
I would have planned a living space or mezzanine floor for living , isolated from the shop .. The heated floor is the Real Plus Here ..
I have slept on a heated floor, Luxury it is ...
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 LOL!😂
You guys definitely earned those root beer floats!!🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Impresive is, how quickly both of You are catching up on tricks of many trades you actualy working as the tradesman building quonset hut. We are gaining knowledge as you progressing with your project.
Eric, Arial called you a Beast! I agree you are in you element with this project, so what does that make Arial a Beasty, she is right there all the way. You two just appear to be so well suited for this lifestyle. I am just overwhelmed by the things you do and accomplish.
Y’all are doing such a great job. Y’all are working so hard working together. Awesome
I admire your drive and work ethic, you two make a great team!!
Hello Folks,
I love watching you, too, working together.
Cool you got the dance moves down.
To under state the obvious that was a lot of work. Really looking forward to pour day. Mr rooster took it all in stride
Holy toledo! What a TON of work! You all are amazing workers!!! ❤❤❤
I hope you eventually lift that steel off of the foam before you pour. The reinforcement steel needs to be embedded in the concrete.
Sending support, love, and kindness from Lexington, Michigan, USA
You guys are one of the hardest-working pairs on CZcams. Love your videos, kinda tired just watching.
Just when I think you guys can't amaze me more....you go and do it again! I thought the root cellar build was a lot of work (& it was!) but holy moly you guys just went above and beyond that. I am in awe of you both. You're a great team!
Wow! You two are doing this massive labor intensive project in record time. A public maintenance crew from Halifax would make a career out of this project ! Would be interesting to know your total cost of steel material, erecting, plumbing & wiring costs once it is done.
Another great educational video ! 👍👍🏆🏆🤩🤩🤩
You are right Arielle, Eric is a Beast for working, I salute you young Man. Excellent job by both of you. And Arielle working those Bees with no Bee protection, you Folks rock. 😃
Excellent job Guys. You will reap the benefits in a couple of months. When the winter come you will say to yourself "Why didn't we do this sooner, Oh ya lack of money". Have fun.
The baby chick's are learning they have to be home before the street light's come on. 😅 Too cute. The new homestead is amazing and so much room to grow. Aerial busting her dance moves 😂 Amazing work guys! ❤️
You're doing fantastic, well done. Am loving seeing the progress. Love from New Zealand
dont forget to have an 1/8 inch gap between the end of your pex and copper ring. if its flush it can pop off. and if it has guides, like on the plastic ones, then it should be touching the guides. keep up the good work
Aaah... love Haagen Dazs! ‼ I will be SO HAPPY when I hear the two of you say your quonset hut floor is warm 💚💛💜 ‼
So much hard work! The both of you deserve more than a rootbeer spider. 😁
That quonset, when finished, is going to be a game changer for your work space! Year round I can see you using it not just to store and work on your vehicles, but do a lot of food prep stuff. Like prepping meat, canning goods, etc. Plus, with the heated floor and power, think of the seed growing bays you could set up! I know you probably have it all planned out, but foodie me can see a row of movable stainless steel counter tops against the wall with the sink/water. And maybe a big old propane stove to fit the canning pots on. Other side of the hut all the mechanical equipment, tools, benches (Aussie term for counter tops), etc.
I can see you both in that space, cleaning up a haul of salmon, prepping it and canning it. Hopefully I'm not getting too wishful in my thinking! 😂
All the best, good luck on the pour. ❤
That going to be alot of concrete. Hope you have a big crew coming to help. Dont forget to put your initials and date somewhere in it before it sets totally. Love you two. Be safe. Till next time...
Don't forget to add the cat and dog's paw prints in the concrete when you put your initials and date after the pour.
@@ricasears5910 As well as the Chickens important to subsistence of the whole family ❗
@@thetraveler5798 as soon as a posted the comment I though about the chickens. They will have to keep thr girls away from thr wet concrete once it's been poured or the chickens will walk all over it, don't think Eric would he to pleased with that, esp as the hard work it takes to level and smooth out the concrete.
@@ricasears5910 😂😎🤙👍
A go nogo, gauge means, the go size is good, nogo means an improper crimp or no crimp, you want all crimps a go, it`s nice you know you got it right the first time. I cannot believe the amount of wood you used for framing and the channel, I have seen people built these barndominiums with the heated floors like you have, and it heats the entire house evenly, crazy technology, you two are champs. Talk about handyman, Eric is the man.
OMG, your Quonset building is so complicated and you guys are doing an extremely wonderful job in building it, I didn't think it would be that hard but for you guys it's a piece of cake of course as usual.
You guys are stepping up your game on this one! Wow, really impressed 👏
I so enjoy your videos. You two work so well together.
Pepper is going to L❤VE that workshop when it's done.
As a plumber, I have no comments, you tried and is going to work for you the way you laid out your floor heating
Great job on the re-bar and metal mesh...I have seen professionals mess that up really bad...in Canada we call that type of pad a monolithic pour with the angled keys cut into the perimeter and usually cut keys evenly spaced from end to end....great job you guys!
Thats alot of work, wow....great work you guys. You are so good together, patience, amazing 😍
If your bees are wanting to swam, look on youtube for the videos on people that catch swarms with swarm boxes. You may be able to create a swarm box in a nearby tree and catch your own swarm if that happens.
What's up my babbies! I love what you are doing. It's helpful for others as well as entertaining. Thank you👍💖😘
Superb building ! A friend named Hildie got me into concrete work twenty five years ago and that was my introduction to the "Squiggly" tool to tie rebar. So useful. I love this channel and all your projects !
Wow, you have been making massive progress! I'm really looking forward to the concrete pour - and even more-so the finished thing, when you can start building your shop! It looks so big, I honestly can't imagine how huge that shop is going to be when it's done. Looking forward to more build updates!
Also, the chicks are ADORABLE.
Been trying to figure out what to say……I love you and all your kids……I’m so grateful that you share your lives with us….you are amazing amazing wonderful people…..❤️💫❤️

Inspiring to watch, thats an unreal amount of work for 2 people. Thanks for sharing.
I think it's awesome that the Kwanza Hut will be bigger than your house. Good times ahead 🙂
I count down every 5 days for your videos. You're my new favorite CZcams channel. You both are amazing!!
You should make a 45 degrees cut at the edge of the plywood so is easier to remove the plywood after the concrete is poured. You guys doing an amazing job congrats
You guys are a powerhouse as a team.
Impressed as always! Great job working through those challenges. You always make it look effortless, even though I’m sure it took lots of brainpower behind the scenes.
I always love the goofy endings!
You realize this barn will be standing in 2123! Researched and built to the max by You two.
Love your videos. The new place is coming along quickly and looks awesome.
My favorite couple at it again. I'm amazed. By far my favorite YT channel. Stay safe
Hi just watched Lumina Actress channel there building a shop and there heating the floor with radiant heat too. He and his wife are doing the set up work like u guys but I seen them put those little stairs lin under the rebar and pipes also had a broiler already n place . They do a lot u may enjoy and learn from each other they made a 40x40 shop foundation . They just poured yesterday they did have help when the cement arrived . 3 trucks . 🙏🙏All goes well for you guys as well thank u for sharing.
An idea for future gravel projects, it might be simple to set up a metal mesh screen to dump dirt in to get at least the big rocks out. Might be easy to just have a couple of different sizes so you can easily sort out the larger ones for other projects.
@@pullupullupullup4687it’s a billion times warmer in winter. Concrete will conduct heat out of the warm side to the frozen ground until it’s the same temperature as the ground.
@@pullupullupullup4687 They are off grid, using solar power!
@@davekeehn8388 That's why they have a layer of insulation to go between the ground and the concrete.
This type of heating system is working like all over the north states and in Canada and it does work really well I think it will work out well for the project that they have set out to do and they are doing great a really great job of getting all the bugs out of the project
@@cdanne6684 they're also using wood for heating. He said boiler, I imagine it will be a wood burning boiler with electric pumps.
So happy you both will be getting some needed help when the concrete is poured
That has been a huge job but it sure will be nice when it’s completed
Thanks Tony!
You have to worry about uplift on trough. Also drill some 3/8ths holes in the trough to allow air out. Oil that form well. The plywood will probably come out in pieces. We normally chamfer the edge of plywood. We normally chair the wire up to get tubing in middle of slab but I usually fill the tubing with water before pour.
Hope it helps.
People in general forget what we can accomplish with hard work.
Your project at first glance seems mind boggling - but with hard work, determination - look what you guys are accomplishing - amazing!
A lesson for the rest of us - put down our phones and get some work done (with some time to spare to watch this channel - lol)
I have a whole new appreciation for the skill and knowledge it takes to build something. Can't forget the stamina and sheer physical labor either. I can understand why labor costs are premium.
Learning curves are not fun. I know you will just keep plugging. Love your videos. Reminds me of my wife and my younger days.
Holy smokes that was complicated!! Y’all need to make appointments for a massage and a visit to a chiropractor! My back was hurting just watching y’all.
