  • Although we struggle to get the first few arches up on our Quonset Hut, we persevere and finally get a routine down. This is just one of the many steps we need to complete in order to have a fully enclosed and functioning off grid workshop in the future but we're relieved to have the process well underway!
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

What I love about this, is that you 2 went from doing concrete on a really small slab for your old house stove, and then moved up slowly, but didn't let the "size" or "complexity" of the situation deter you. Here you are, constructing what is essentially the Empire State Building for the "homestead". Good job. There was a point there where I would have said, "I give up", but you pushed forward. Amazing.

Seriously, I have nothing but praise and admiration for the two of you. ❤ That is a LOT of work you've already got done, and you know there's still a tonne more to do and you're just focussing and getting it done. It's what is called a "hard slog" here, and you're both nailing it. Be proud.
And wow! I keep saying it, but that is going to be such a great asset when done! Will be making your life and work easier in the long run. Finally - yay for first cook out there! May there be many, many more amazing meals created in that quanset. ❤

There's an old saying that I'd rather be lucky then skilled. You guys are both,it takes a lot of thinking outside the box to be able to construct a building of this size. I've got to be honest on the first two frames I just knew it was going to end in a disaster and I was praying you guys wouldn't get hurt when it all came down. You definitely proved this old man wrong. As a fellow Oregonian I can say you are doing us proud with your full speed ahead man the torpedoes additude. 40 yrs ago 3 of us built a Quonset Hut. We had no idea what we were doing. You are correct the 1st section is the hardest. If I remember, we build the arch on the ground and took a rope and pulled the arch up to top center. We did tighten the bolt so it would stand on it own. With only two people, you are doing
a great job. You work so well together. The one we build 40+ years ago is still up and looking good.

Over thinking, my friend didn't have a fork lift to get a piece of heavy equipment off his trailer. So I showed him a trick with shovels, blocks, wood and imagination. We found solid ground backed trailer up to a flat slab, marked where the trailer wheels where, pulled the trailer straight forward. Then we dug out where the wheels were about 4 to 6 inches in a slope. Backed the trailer into those sloped trailer ground ramps. Trailer was still to high but that was a problem because we disconnected trailer and jacked the tongue up and braced the trailer front corners. This allowed us to drive off the trailer right on to the slab. It worked so good, my friend decided to make permanent miniature loading concrete step down loading dock. Yes it takes time but that time has given him many many easy trailer loading and unloading experiences. He can easily roll anything on and off trailer with no ramps, no trailer tipping because the trailer when jacked 1 to 2 inches on tongue the rear of the trailer sits on a 6 inch concrete ledge at the perfect height. Now he can use a pallet jack, castors, drive on or off, winch on, pull off pretty much anything. Hope this inspires people to make their own custom trailer docks for their shops.👍

My father in law and i built a 40x60 with 18 foot ceiling height back in 2020. We built a 16 foot 2x6 framed wall at the end of the slab and braced it off. Then we built the first arch (piece by piece) and attached it with lag bolts to the wooden temp wall. It was strong and sturdy. We then pieced the rest of the entire building together one panel at a time working from two lifts of staging and a borrowed forklift that leaked hydraulic oil like a siv, but we got it done and its a beautiful building!

Hi folks, I've been watching you since you started in Alaska, almost. My wife and I admire your brave new world, experiencing new things and always willing to try more. As a veteran gas station and automotive dealer, construction worker, please hear this. That concrete pour you did was the bravest thing I've ever seen anyone attempt (from tv). It was a very large span and thick, now that its down let it sit for a couple of weeks and stay away from it. It may be hard and strong enough to drive on with out the appearance of damage, but hairline cracks will happen underneath it and will reveal themselves within two or three years. I feel terrible I didn't tell you this after your pour I watched. When we poured concrete in Minnesota we couldn't guarantee our work if a car drove on it with in 7 days specially larger vehicles. Stay off of it and cut your expansion lines firs so if it cracks it will crack short lines. Love you guys and seriously hope I'm wrong. I wonder if you can hear me when you ice fish.

EPIC, TRULY E P I C !!!! I thought the two concrete pours were hard going, but this one tops them, hands down. That tractor is more than earning it's keep....
It will be so satisfying seeing the arches taking shape. Good design, the way that all the sections are able to be handled individually. Tip for tightening the nuts/bolts. Use a coloured paint marker, and when you tighten a nut/bolt, "dot" the nut with it. That way you know each bolt has been tightened.
The salmon & sweet potato fries was a well-deserved meal after a hard day, what a colour, looked great. Epic, truly epic.....!

In previous comment I should have mentioned; Tyvek tape works great for covering screw heads. Just go around putting a small piece on each screw head. Then you can easily wipe any concrete off the tape and the bit goes right through the tape making screw removal easy.
I should also add; In a previous comment I recommended getting a concrete crew. I was wrong, you and your friends did a great job :)

Nice and warm. The slab turned out great considering how much concrete it was. Work safe. In the old days we had double headed nails, 16's and 20's to form with. Had to pull everyone by hand. Yeap, I like those screws. A tip for the nnext slab or pour, put a dab of grease in the screw heads where they might get mix in them. You need sky hooks. Come in handy. Wish I had a set. A frind and I put one of those together for an airplane hanger. No air or electric tools. All hand ratchet and wrenches. No lift, ladders and some scaffolding. Great job especially for two people. Once you learn a system it gets much easier and stable. Good looking meal. Jeanie with a view. Build up a tower to watch the sunset. Take care, wet a line.

For any DIY'ers, there is a concrete saw specifically made for doing relief cuts that is a lot easier to use than this big ol saw. It's on wheels and rolls right along cutting to a consistent depth. No bending over to use it! Good job. I knew you'd figure out an efficient way to do ut eith what youve got. Building each section on the slab and lifting it into place would be even faster.

Did the mfg not send a base angled plate that each panel bolt into the concrete keyway? That makes the job much easier than not having an anchor point on the slab.
