Tearing Down the Old Homestead | It's Time to Move On

  • We make the long trip down to our old cabin to tear down the garden, fencing, and paint the deck we weren't able to complete last summer. The garden once provided us with a year's worth of food but it's time for us to move on and put all of our energy into our new home, including rebuilding a garden next year. After taking care of the driveway at our wooded lot, we head back north with a trailer full of firewood and a little bit of weight off our shoulders.
    We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

    Hey Y'all! We have said before math is not our strong suit. Some of you may catch that our trailer load of wood was miscalculated.
    12 feet x 6 feet x 18 inches is 108 cubic feet which is equivalent to 0.84375 cord of firewood, so just under a true cord 🤓
    Thanks for tuning in!

      Hi! Isn't transporting wood from your spruce beetle infested propriety to the new one risky? I would be terrified thinking that I might bring those little buggers to my new place and spread that plague on a new forest.

    Seeing Bandit digging in his "pond" again was awesome. That dog likes to dig! It's really bittersweet seeing the old property again because I remember when there was just a basic cabin and an outhouse there. I'm sure you'd have no problem selling the place after all the work you've done on it. And your second property looks great with the gravel!

    Sad but exiting at the same time...new adventures begin!
    I´ve been lucky, for the 13 yrs I´ve had chickens and only lost 5-6 to the dove hawk...until this summer. One hawk is smart enough to remember where to get food and I´ve lost 5 animals and that´s a lot for my small group. I´m devastated especially as I bought new chicks this spring. So the ladies is inside the hen house at the moment and we have to split the coop and get a net above it.

    Haha, you named your scarecrow Russel Crow! Got me laughing. That gladiator wasn’t as good at those hawks as he was in the arena though! Haha!
    Sad to see the old place torn down, but time to move on and let go. You made some great memories there and we were happy to enjoy them!

    Just a tip for you homesteaders. I vest in a good pair of fencing pliers. Makes removing those staples easy by having an "eagle beak" type plier on the front. Tool
    was literally made to install all types of wire fencing. Even has a hammer head end.

    Catching up on some videos because CZcams turned off my notifications for your channel somehow 🙄. Heartfelt emotions as you so quickly destroyed in hours much of what you strategized and erected for the past 4 years! So glad that you are repurposing so much for your new property as it will save you much time, money, and resources to simply reconstruct. Wondering why you simply aren't selling now to no longer have that distant worry of a second home left behind? I may have missed a beat this summer. @Simple Alaska Living. Bandit pawmarking his little pond with his scent was precious!

    Smaller tractors can become somewhat helpless without a counterweight on the back. Using a liquid ballast in the back tires helps. Also, added weight helps the rear tires last longer because it stops a lot of the spinning to a degree. It is frustrating when you know the tractor will do the work, but nothing much gets done when the traction is lost.

    • @dorothyallen3614
      @dorothyallen3614 Před 10 měsíci +5

      Yes put BEET juice in the tires, it will not freeze and gives weight to your rear end of the tractor! Best of luck ❤😂

    • @t.r.l.4377
      @t.r.l.4377 Před 10 měsíci +8

      Better build a half or quarter sized ibc container to the rear so you can add water n get rid off when you need to travel with the tractor!
      Gettin rid of liquid in the tires is realy hard!

  • @cainsriverhideaway
    @cainsriverhideaway Před 10 měsíci +1

    Build yourself a nice deep box filled with concrete hook to your 3 point hitch for weight on the back .. what we always did to our tractors for that counter weight we needed on the back ..

    Hi Guys! So sad watching the old homestead being taken apart😢 My husband and I did have a chuckle….. a year ago or so we were watching one of your shows. You were out in the garden and when I looked up from a craft I was working on I saw the birdhouse on the pole. Well, I thought because of the angle it was a lookout post! 😂😂 My husband had said what in the world are you talking about it’s a birdhouse! Oh my gosh so last night my husband said hey there’s the lookout! Oh boy never going to live that down! We love your channel and all the exciting things you’re doing at the new property. Take care❤

    The best part of your recent adventure was seeing the red crossbills at the end of the video. I lived in North Dakota and Minnesota most of my 80 years and fed them often at my winter feeding stations. I no longer reside in the North Country and have not seen red crossbills in years. I relate to many of your experiences as my early years growing up in ND was with out electricity, running water, indoor plumbing OR TELEPHONE.

    It seems that so many Americans are enthralled by possessions and whether they have a two sink vanity in their numerous bathrooms, etc, etc. Recycling and re use is part of helping our poor planet.

    Hey, in our pursuit of a new tractor recently I wanted to let you in on a trick that might help yours. Take it to your local tire company and have them fill them with a fluid. It is a common practice for farmers and puts weight in your tires to help when lifting heavy items. Hope this helps so you don’t have to have the back hoe on all the time! 😉. Let us know in your next episode if you did it and if it helped. We watch all your videos and love it! Keep up the good work!

    Another great video. And, being raised with the "make do and mend" mindset, I'm just thrilled you're able to collect and re-use so much of the stuff you had both already put so much time, money, and effort into having. ❤ Plus I love that you're making these two properties look their best for their next owners. You've shown how properties there are sold "as is" with all sorts of junk still in them, so making sure what is left by you is clean, neat, and tidy really shows what caring, thoughtful people you are.
    Finally, I guessed 2 cords, so way off. 😂 But very relieved you're taking it home with you, as I was worried you'd not had time to stock up at the new place. Great stuff you two. As always, I love and admire your work ethics.❤
