This movie had a great message about certain things society has contributed to making people go down a rabbit hole that turns them into monsters. The influence of the media, those who control public opinion, and just making assumptions without really looking deeper into what the real problem is is what’s causing so many problems we see in society today. The bottom line here is that anyone can become Joker after a very very bad day! You may not think that’s true but if you look at history, yes it can.
Thing is, certain societies get off on doing this to people because they are addicted to entertainment and these psychos provide it, the main reason the movie is so popular at all. So you could say the movie lampoons itself and the United States.

Everytime I see this movie I remember this guy at high school. From 12 years old to 16, he was targeted by every bullies and morons in the school, every day. He was taller and stronger than average but was a bit slow and didn't talk very well. I urged him to stand up for himself from 12 to 16, that if he do not defend himself, he will always be a target. It's at that time that I figured this might be, in some case, what a school shooter could look like. Access to guns here in Canada is extremely strict, but I always thought if this guy would have been in USA, and snapped, that's how it would have ended. There is just so much someone can take before the bottle explodes. He took all the shit you can think of; thrown over the school fence, his lock being heated up by ligthers just before he comes back from class, insulted on a daily basis, pushed around every week. Well, guess what, he snapped. He snapped at 16 years old, with only about 6 weeks left before we would all move out from high school. I was there when he did, I saw everything. He sent 3 guys to the hospital that day, with one that barely survived the assault and to this day (I'm 36) still has physical trauma from the event. All 3 were among the worst bullies and have been from 12 to 16. Was it too extreme of a retaliation? Mostly yes. Could this have unfolded differently? Sure. Can I blame him for ruthlessly defend himself after years of bullying? No. Can you?
The thing I love about Phenox’s Joker over Leadger’s is that he made it feel like it could be anyone that could become the Joker. That’s also what made it horrifying.
The moment he killed Murray, his legs started shivering He laughed to calm his cry He didn't harm anyone else except those who harmed him. He is a criminal, but basically he is a revenger.
I love how he doesn't even explain that he killed them in self defense. He knows it wouldn't be worth anything. They were the guys in suits and him? He's just a clown. Why speak when you wont be heard? Just laugh instead. Everyone hears that.
@@irealdeal1334 no, in this scene he comes to the realization that he was meant to be this. His glee appears and then he finally really laughs and it's not a sickness anymore. He embraced it. Didn´t he also listened to the chaotic screaming in the studio? Like he felt happy for the horror he just created? And of course felt relieved to assassin Murray? That scene is so uncomfortable...
@@irealdeal1334 I took it to mean, for his entire life, his laughter was a curse that he couldn't control, that only comes out in bad situations, and makes them worse. And that the laugh after shooting Murray was the first REAL laugh of his that we'd seen the entire movie.

The most impressive part about this scene is that we all want to believe that it's awful, he's wrong, and oh my god so sick but in the end we all know it's so insanely true. The first part where he says you'd step right over me is so true. We blame the victim for being crazy instead of blaming the people who perpetuate the bullying. We deem them as victims instead of calling it out as it is. Perpetuate your bully mentality, get what is coming for you. F around and find out at this point.
He had such an intense character arc through this film, yet there is so much more still on the table. Seeing him settle into being the Joker is going to be a wild ride.
Phoenix acting in this movie was one of the best I’ve seen the way his face changes to happy, sad ,angry, annoyed, just shows with his expressions you can feel the mood change as his face changes and you just feel a sense of unease

I love how they made this version of Joker comical, which was excluded the previous time, but mixed with dark and sadness also makes you take seriously. AMAZING last joke scene, exceptional acting and writing overall, Murray's words are all true and pingpoint showing how much the author knows how to write and think.
@@hiduck8247 Well so what? It wasn't about the person Thomas Wayne himself. It was about the basic concept. About defining the line that crosses everything. The line that goes between those who are rich and those who are poor. The line between the guys who decide what is right and the guys who are always wrong because of that. The line between the ones that protect themselves and the ones who can't.... At least that's my attempt to assume what and how this interpretation of the joker thinks. I'm not saying this is necessarily right or wrong. I just wanted to explain his reasoning.
@@oliverhardy9464 I think the guy (Joker)is fucked up on every level, from personal and emotional to conceptual. I guess that was the point. In Wayne, he saw both the problem of his emotional trauma as much as the problem of the society itself. I never saw them as necessarily disconnected.
I remember critics and Main Stream Media panning this movie, despite how hyped and loved it was. I think they did that, because they saw themselves here, and the truth scared them. This is especially cemented during the ending scene when Joker is speaking his peach live on camera, then it cuts out to reveal a dozen other televisions, all different news channels covering what Joker did with their own spin. Completely ignoring the man himself, like they always had. Yeah....they didn't like when the mirror was put in their faces.
It’s been nearly 5 years since this movie and I still can’t describe how amazing it. Not only is it a deconstruction on violence but also how “super hero comics” can be taken seriously like Logan and Batman 2022
Murray is a great representation of what's wrong with media. When Arthur talks about society driving him crazy, Murray assumes he's using craziness as an excuse for his actions. When Arthur discusses rich people's ability to control public opinion, using Thomas Wayne as an example, Murray assumes he has a personal beef with Wayne. Murray makes the most basic, superficial and sensationalist assumptions any chance he gets, never wanting to look deeper into the real problems, all the while trying to project the image of moral superiority.
falcr Films can be very symbolic and are able to communicate many complex topics and issues. Joker is obviously a film that is depicting many observations about society that ring true. It’s your dense thinking that is the problem. Too many simple-minded people on this damn planet. It’s like people are afraid to expand their brains. I guess it’s easier to not actually think.

This movie does so much right. You can feel Jokers craziness and how he feels unstable but you can also feel where he’s coming from talking about our society
He talks nothing about our society. He talks only about himself and how people can’t sink to his level. He’s pissed because he lived his life thinking he’s the illegitimate son of a billionaire and that his neighbor crush is his lover and then gets pissed at the world when he discovers it’s just in his head.
@@hellosammy4105 No you're so wrong. This is about society and how people treat those who we feel are inferior to them. Look at those men he killed on the train. They were rich and successful yet they acted so terrible towards him. Society also ignores those who suffer from mental illness. He was lied to his whole life but what would have happened if his mother wasn't put in an asylum but was given actual medical help to cope with her cognitive dissonance?
I think this is the most comic accurate Joker because of a unreliable narrator, compelling and realistic tragedy and a nialistic view of society that makes sense while still coming through as either a guy having fun or a complete monster created by society. Critics assumed the ending was a victory and thus glorified violence when really it was when he lost everything, the message is simply be kind or you can create more problems possibly leading to violence, sorry went off on a tangent but I love this movie.
From the moment he says “You’re awful Murray. Playing my video. Inviting me on the show. You just wanted to make fun of me.” It’s full Joker all the way from there. The way he looks over at Murray’s dead corpse and holds in his glee long enough until a true laugh escapes him is so intense. Phoenix rules.
I think the plan of killing himself changed when he heard and watched Murray humilating him again while he was behind the curtains and when he danced that was 95% Joker. When Murray introduced him, his attitude was very different from Arthur's behaviour when he reharshed his suicide at home. He was more confident, he kissed Dr.Sally, he cleaned the seat because he didn't want to sit on the same chair occupied by someone else and he even read (or improvised) the bad joke that was against the show's rules. His posture was different, his tone of voice.. Even his laugh, more sinister... like he was humiliating people who were laughing. Arthur probably surfaced a bit right before he killed Murray, but in my opinion that man was 95% Joker. I also think that Joker is the one who called Murray "Murr-aayyy" because he despised him.
@@giada951 yep I agree, when he reminisced about his abuse "that we will just sit there and take like good little boys" and talked about Thomas Wayne he was Arthur but Arthur was steadily dying. Joker had most of the control

Your stomach clenches, your vision blurs, your muscles want to all flex at the same time, your mind races, and you get the sense of not even being present and operating purely on your most primordial basic instincts? That's probably what was happening to him at that moment.
It really shows how awful Murray is... Any professional host would have gone to commercial and immediately had this guy escorted out by security. But for ratings and his own ego, he kept engaging and pushing Arthur. He walked right in to his trap.

Joker is a superb film. Everything about it felt desperately sad, and grimy, and utterly captivating. No one could have done a better job than Joaquin Phoenix.
Joker 1989: “You ever dance with the devil in the pale moon light?” Joker 2007: “Why so SERIOUS!!??!!” Joker 2019: “You get what you FUCKING DESERVE!!!”
The sad part was, was that he looked up to Murray and idolized him and instead of being shown appreciation by his idol he was shown disrespect and made fun of. That would be enough to make anyone go crazy.
Thats a sad fact about humanity you can be injured or dying on the street or side walk and people will STILL walk by not even bother to help you even if your right there breaking down sobbing.
Joaquin completely crushed this role. Especially with this scene. He completely transforms into his character to the point that you forget its all just an act. He literally becomes Joker.
Notice how when the Joker was giving his last "Joke" to Murray, Murray was asking someone to call the police and completely ignored him, just like everyone else, looping back to why Arthur went insane in the first place.
To be fair it's not like Murray could have known the context behind the Joker's actions, or had any reason to continue listening to him given how he was presenting himself. While the Joker's treatment at the beginning of the film wasn't justified, by the end of the film it is.
Dude, I remember seeing this in the theaters for the first time. Almost right before The lockdowns. this movie is wild and obviously one of my favorites it shows that sometimes villains have really empathetic origin stories
I don't know about that. I mean Robert Deniro is PERFECT in this role. So is Joaquin Phoenix, but you can't really outdo perfection. The difference is that when you're playing a crazy character, you have much more room to show all kinds of emotions, so people will always praise crazy performances more than more restrained and subtle performances. But hot damn, Deniro is perfect here. We all want to shoot him because of his performance.
It's their mutual interaction that transcends this scene to legendary. Both of them carried the scene in fact I immediately praised De Niro's acting a couple of times this scene alone. The series of reactions he portrayed regarding every words his guest of the show said is amazing. "You're laughing, you're laughing" that delivery of that line is realistically on point. Then the excuse and self pity part. Then his subtle reactions to the show manager and the crowd shouting. I mean he is great. Add also the acting of Phoenix who's emotions were easily triggered by mere words a couple of times , amazing this scene.
Each actor has a job and De Niro’s was to be the support, the foil to Arthur. And he did it wonderfully because he didn’t overdo it. Phoenix’s job was to go wild while De Niro’s was to be restrained. The contrast is what makes the scene.
"What do you get, when you cross a mentally ill loner, with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash? I'll tell you what you get. You get what you fucking deserve." That whole scene, the words, the acting, the build up, everything, will forever go down as one of my favorite scenes I've ever seen. Aaaaabsolutely gave me chills.

It's called freudian excuse. These are the kind of dangerous, morally decadent ideas that irresponsible movies like this put into people's minds. Joker absolutely was the bad guy. He murdered people in cold blood and not in self-defense like his fans like to think of it. Blame society instead of taking responsibility for your own action; the mindset of a loser...

dear jesus, Joaquin’s performance through this whole movie was just phenomenal. i was literally in awe the entire time. he honestly floored me.

Oh and edit: I don't remember saying that this was my own comment
No. Can you?

I see what your saying, but deniro also played exactly what he was meant to. It was great though with all that emotion.
Money
Was a very powerful scene . Just remember its just a scene and nothing good ever comes from releasing your fury and rage .
Phenix really deserved that oscar for that good acting
@@Mahito_Akuma all those mothers fuckers deserve to die like a bitch, hurt me once I will make your life hell
@@junjiito6619
Yet mfs are saying “your crazy! U need help!” Bitch who’s fault is it for making us crazy?
@@Mahito_Akuma don't judge a book by it's cover joker was right we all are pretending to be a good human being
The moment when you realize Joker wasn’t the bad guy. He was simply a product of the environment.
Great observation.
A product? So you're saying he's not a human being with brain and soul like everyone else ? There are people whom their only crime was being rude and they are called bad people but the murdered no it's their faults not his. If we apply your logic to everyone else everybody is the product of their own environment so there's no such thing called bad people. The 3 Wallstreet guys are not bad guys then ? Their are the product of their environment too
Every single villain is to some extent a product of their environment. This is true in life as well.
That's a very dangerous thought to have. He is the bad guy, violence is a choice.
One of the best acting ever to a film.
Take a bow Joaquin Phoenix...you deserved that Oscar!
What was the best part of his speech?
@emiliobello2538 The way he smiled and said " I know" at 3:40 😈
Brilliant acting. Too real.
Definitely. Unfortunately this is one of the only few movies in the decade five years that delivers that. Many movies and shows went downhill after the late 90s and earlier 2000s were over. This kind of quality is hard to find these days.
@@lovellhorrors1586 I think you are kinda wrong, you just need to look hard enough and find some good movies in the last decade or two.
@@FroggyTheNinja I know. That's why I said "many" and not "all".
@@lovellhorrors1586 Yeah, i totally agree. I think in the society these days it's so easy to get anything, everything is so computerized. Movies are so full of effects right now and most people like it. Acting is like in the background. You don't need lots of imagination these days, because movie makers trying to put everything under effects. People are getting more and more stupid, when they don't have to think about most things in life. The other day i was getting an uber taxi and while i was watching at the car moving in the map and how long it will take to get at my home i was thinking that it's just insane how most things in life work these days (i mean so easy). I don't want to talk a lot, because i'm not the best at that, but in my opinion something really similar is happening in a movie industry. There's very little of creativity left if we're talking about Hollywood and stuff like that. That's why a lot of people trying to watch older movies, when actors had to give their all to impress by storytelling and creating their own image among others. I'm not sure if you got my point, not the best at explaining my thoughts :D . P.S. I actually really liked La La Land. It's very strange, because i'm not into musicals at all, but that movie wasn't your typical musical, it had really nice plot, music was also great and it had meaning. I was really surprised when i finished watching it, because it was somehow different. There's always some exceptions.
Joaquin is hands the best actor in Hollywood other than Daniel Day Lewis, he is top dog.
