Nice job of explaining raising the next note before putting the other fingers down to avoid the crossing sound. Getting them started right off the bat. Great Job!

Hi! Thank you, your bagpipe lessons are so helpful and clear. Also, it's great to see a woman as an instructor! I have a question about my instrument - I am a very new beginner, but I'm sure that my fingering is correct and that I'm covering all the holes when I go up the scale. However, it seems like I really have to work to have a different sound come out of the instrument when I play the next note. Most of the time, there is no distinct change in pitch. I am trying to find a local teacher to take some lessons but am having no luck. Do you think this is an issue with my instrument or is it an issue with me?

no changing from bottom hand d to high hand e should be at the same time. if you listen to your video you hear the false E with bottom hand open. it is clearly audible on a practice chanter it is magnified on a pipe chanter. the top hand must open to play e at the same time the bottom hand closes from D or you get a false E sound.
equally going down the scale the top hand must close as the bottom had opens or you will get a low hand crossing note....all these movements must be done at the same time. the two critical factors in piping are blowing (i.e tone which come with practice) and fingering accuracy eliminating any false notes like an open C or open bottom hand when playing a top hand E, F , G or high A.

For the new student learning the technique slowly and open will build the proper muscle memory and keep them from any crossing noises. You are correct that you hear a slight false E, but as the student gets stronger and faster that sound will go away. Thank you for your comment!
