  • This video is designed for the Beginner Bagpiper. The more you hold the Chanter the more relaxed your hands will get and allow for smoother finger movement.

    Good evening from Dorset. My beech practice chanter arrives tomorrow and I’m hoping that it is a new journey. I’m 61, and have been playing folk tunes on flute, whistle, and mandolin for years and years so am hoping that this new venture is within my capabilities. Your album and films have been an inspiration.

    Because of my guitar playing my left (fretboard) hand has better pinky control on low g .... while my right (picking) fingers has better thumb control on high a
    Every piper should feel for the best suited top hand .... guinezz B is one example

    I watched a couple other videos that were supposed to help with how to hold the PC, but they were not anywhere close to this clear and helpful, so thank you very much! One question I have, however, is do you recommend resting the PC on a table while practicing or holding it in the air?

    • @DarkIsleBagpiper
      @DarkIsleBagpiper  Před 6 lety +1

      Kintora Productions thank you for the great feedback on this video. I personally would recommend setting it on your knee or table, holding it in the air causes your hands to grip too much making it harder to move the fingers freely. I hope this helps!

      Thanks for the quick reply! I will follow your advice. Now, I patiently (or impatiently) wait for my PC to arrive. I will keep reading and watching videos in the meantime :)

      That's great! I do have some local resources for instruction (group and possibly one-on-one), but it might take a while to get in with them, and even then, I might need some supplemental instruction depending on their availability. So, I will absolutely keep this option in mind. Thanks!

    I really like your videos and am just starting out. I have a quick question...and I can't find any information anywhere about it! For some reason, it's soooo much easier for me to have the finger bottom pads of my right hand (pads closest to palm) covering the holes than having the middle pads. Not only do i sound better, but my pinky is more comfortble and i can move much faster. Is this super taboo?

    • @DarkIsleBagpiper
      @DarkIsleBagpiper  Před 3 lety

      When you start doing burls and other movements you won’t feel as free... so be sure to keep working on the proper fingering and placement. As you go it will get easier and easier. Starting out it definitely feels odd.

    I was looking at prices of practice chanters online and they are as cheap as $15 up to $100 and I'm sure beyond. What would you recommend I look for when trying to pick one out?

    • @DarkIsleBagpiper
      @DarkIsleBagpiper  Před 9 lety +2

      Sara Larsen Great Question!! Finding the right Chanter is very important. Be sure to note that the Practice Chanter is different then the Bagpipe Chanter. So when you are ordering, don't purchase a Pipe chanter till you are buying your set of Bagpipes.
      The main thing you want is to get a chanter that is "Long". The holes on the Long Chanter are perfectly inline with the hole spacing on the Pipe Chanter. So your fingers will gain the muscle memory necessary and make transferring to the Pipes easier. Getting a wood Practice Chanter vs. a Poly Practice Chanter is all personal. Poly is easier to take care of and can handle the heat and the cold better then the wood.
      Reeds are set up for you at the shop but it is always a good idea to purchase extra reeds just incase you break one or they stop working.
      Purchasing a bit of hemp is also a good idea and will help your chanter to fit tightly at the top opening. Sometimes this portion gets loose.
      A great place to purchase your Practice chanter is at www.hendersongroupltd.com
      They treat their customers great! Happy Shopping!
      Hope this answers your questions!

      Just don't buy a cheap one, they're not made right and they're not tuned right. There's lots of good ones on the market, prices start about sixty five dollars for a good poly long chanter. My first practice chanter was a Naill with Nicole ferules and imitation ivory sole. I paid one hundred ten dollars for it and still use it although I have others also.

    Hi DI . I was intrigued when You stated that the thumb be placed between second and third fingers. When You held the chanter at the beginning , Your thumb instinctively day just under second finger. When playing the GHB , Your thumb is there also. Seems quite a stretch to place BETWEEN ' B and A' holes on chanter ? What say You )) Stephen australia

      Hello D.I.B. I really do not know what to say. Whilst I respect that it is You who has made the effort to tutor on y tube , there are some fundamentals which are at odds with what You are teaching . If You say as You do ( I refer to Your reply that the thumb is BETWEEN B and C fingers then please refer to 2:27 of Your tuition . Additionally 3:14 will highlight that You are teaching to s t r e t c h Our thumbs between B and A !! I added the exclamation mark just as You did in reply seemingly to shout it from on high. Note that as soon as You say that a tutor will be looking for My thumb between B and A , You immediately draw YOUR THUMB up higher on the chanter. My comment was in good faith as I really do not think I could have ever managed when first learning to hold My thumb in this new position. It is entirely up to You to take in board My good faith observation. You play wonderfully and upon observing Your playing style it is noted where the thumb is located. Further attempts to understand the instruction prove that a bunching and tightening of C, B, low A and low G fingers restricts the Pipers ability to play smartly. Warm regards . Stephen australia. EDIT:. Not sure if I have misinterpreted Your exclamation ?? I just saw that You gave a ?? Hearted ♥️ comment. I guess that suggests You are not having a go at Me ? Somewhat perplexing however will leave it at that. With respect I go in peace )

      Most left handed people play with the right hand on top, the left hand on the bottom, and the bag set up to go under the right arm. The bass drone will be where the outside tenor goes and the outside tenor will change places with the bass.

      You play how you are comfortable.. I'm fucked right up lol...images.app.goo.gl/BjgzMZui6WAm7QsZ7... I play like this guy
      I played tin whistle left handed ; (right hand on top)
      guitar I play right handed (I use left hand on the neck and of course that means my left arm moves )
      GHB,s I put my right hand on top like the whistle and bag under left arm cause I'm use to my right arm being In one place like guitar playing... also years of stretching my left fingers on guitar notes my left makes the gap between lowA and lowG easy , right hand as high hand has stronger thumb and only 3 fingers ( no pinkie)

      Karin Blakey you can learn the Bagpipes that way but you will have to have the bag under your right arm and set up differently. Not impossible! But I would highly recommend learning with the right hand on bottom and left on top.
