  • The Official US Army Song called "The Caisson Song" played on the Bagpipes for this #militarymonday This song is now Known and retitled "The Army Goes Rolling Along".
    What is a Caisson?
A caisson is an old word for a chest or wagon for holding or conveying ammunition.
    The History behind the Song:
The Caisson Song was designated the official song of the United States Army in 1956. Yet its history goes back to March 1908.
This music arrangement is only part of the history of the Army Song. While stationed in the Philippines in 1908, 1st Lt. Edmund Gruber, a field artilleryman, wrote the original melody. Gruber named it the "Caisson Song," with the original lyrics reflecting routine activities of a horse-drawn field artillery battery.
    Lyrics:
    Over hill, over dale
As we hit the dusty trail,
And the caissons go rolling along.
In and out, hear them shout,
    Counter march and right about,
And the caissons go rolling along.
    Then it's hi! hi! hee!
    In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
    For where'er you go,
    You will always know
That the caissons go rolling along.
In the storm, in the night,
    Action left or action right
See those caissons go rolling along
    Limber front, limber rear,
    Prepare to mount your cannoneer
And those caissons go rolling along.
    Then it's hi! hi! hee!
    In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
    For where'er you go,
    You will always know
That the caissons go rolling along.
Was it high, was it low,
Where the heck did that one go?
As those caissons go rolling along
Was it left, was it right,
Now we won't get home tonight
And those caissons go rolling along.
    Then it's hi! hi! hee!
    In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
    For where'er you go,
    You will always know
That the caissons go rolling along.
That the caissons go rolling along.
That the caissons go rolling along.

It was so cool meeting you on the side of the road years ago. I used to live in just the right spot in town to occasionally hear the faint playing of bagpipes on the wind. So glad you got the channel here for us to still listen to the music. Keep up the great work! 🎉

My Grandpa Retired US Army Desert Storm
Also Lyrics: “First to fight, for the right, and to build the nation’s might, and the army goes rolling along. Proud of all, we have done, fighting till the battles won, and the army goes rolling along. And it’s HI HI HEY! The army’s on its way, count off that cadence loud and strong (TWO THREE FOUR). And where ever we go, you will always know, that the army goes rolling along!”

Great job. Fantastic tune on the pipes. I was in an Army unit that had the last remaining pipe and drum band…. The 91st Div. The pipe band was deactivated due to lack of pipers. Sad really.
