All benders have their merits, but it is pretty clear that Air-Benders are flying high above the rest. Looking through the power sets and abilities, we can scope out a clear image of just what makes these benders much more deadly than they appear. When looking at what they can do, the sky's the limit and there isn’t much standing in their way. From the likes of Avatar Aang, to his master, Monk Gyatso, to the much more sinister Zaheer; we have a wide variety of fighting styles to compare; none of them to be messed with. The peaceful nomads were packing a real punch this whole time! And having that style missing from the world for one hundred years truly did no one any favors. Harder to counter something you don’t know anything about.
Here we are breaking down Air-Bending and what truly makes it so dangerous. With their peaceful reputation, it’s certainly easy to underestimate the Air-Bender. The lack of burning fire, rocks to break bones, and ice shards to pierce your skin makes it much less scary; but that subtly may just be one of its greatest weapons. Hard to fight something you can’t see coming.
So just how powerful are they? Can they really use the force of a jet engine? What gives them an edge in battle over other elements? Who was the most dangerous Air-Bender of them all? Stay tuned to find out. Also, make sure you leave a comment letting us know what you think is the most terrifying bending style. Let’s find out how the Air-Benders could blow us all away.

In fact, I think that secondary bending related to air is spirit. That is why Ginora can astral project herself and do those things she did during the harmonic convergence. And that is why most airbenders are spiritually trained. But flight might also be one of the advanced bending skills. Until now, only fire have not seen 2 advanced bending techniques. Water has healing and blood, earth has metal and lava, air has flight and spirit. Fire has only electricity.

There is actually a theory that Monk Gyatso used a vacuum to eliminate all of the Fire Nation soldiers(and himself) who attacked him while he was meditating, since Aang finds him sitting peacefully with a plethora of Fire Nation Soldier skeletons around him. They would have been comet enhanced, and his clothes aren't burned, meaning he almost certainly used some method of Airbending that was so effective, that Fire couldn't have been produced. A Vacuum is the perfect explanation for this, but it would have also killed Monk Gyatso since he would have also been in the vaccuum.

Another thing is that you can't actually see airbending. They just give it a visual representation for our sake. The people its being used on see none of that brightened bit of air like we do. Unless it's like a burst of air that picks up dust or something you aren't going to see anything

This means one air bender vs any other bender will have naturally super human endurance so when the other benders have run out of gas just from sheer exhaustion of their muscles the air bender is still at 80% capacity minimum. Not once did Aang during a battle show any signs of wear and tear or exhaustion except with azula but she got a cheap shot with lightning. Tenzon only started to slow down after he ended up in a 4 v 1 taking multiple hits over n over n over n over n over again and was still standing. Increased oxygen = increased muscle size and strength as well , Zaheer was incredibly physically capable and it make sense they were vegetarians because large muscles would impede movement and their fighting style was light on their feet except for him who used brutal force.

that vacuum move needs the user to constantly move the air away. zaheer only used it when he was able to do so without interruptions. he cannot fight or use any other bending as long as he using it. another thing is it might be an expert level move not every air bender would be able to do, and like auxified said they were outnumbered on top of the fire nation having boosted power. do remember the air nomads were split up in their respective temples.

Airbenders lost because they never developed their bending for combat to anything more than self-defense. A lot of us understand if an Airbender were truly ruthless they could rob the air from another human or create high pressured waves to slice through armies even a joint effort to lv5 Tornadoes on demand but all these required the pacifistic Airbenders to think up such violent things. Those politics dominated most decisions of the nomadic tribe and when it came to military affairs they decided not to grow in this particular area.
Air bender's not willing to embrace all Air had to offer and ignoring the very human fears of other nations that could imagine their overwhelming threat lead to their own demise.
They we're too detached from their own reality to save themselves in time.
The real sad thing is as Nomads, which travel the world, Airbenders *would* have seen the horror's of their reality and the violence they've refused to acknowledge. The elders choose to keep blind to the world and it's troubles leaving it to the next generation to deal with them should they come knocking on their doorstep some day.

It's heavily implied through the lack of scorch marks on ANYTHING that what he did was get as many soldiers to enter the room as possible, before he de-oxygenized the ENTIRE ROOM, preventing fire from forming at all, and completely suffocating himself and every single other living thing in the room.
For all we know, zaheer's suffocation move could have been from gyatzo's secret dark teachings or something, simply distilled and perfected against a single target.

When you think about it, each bending style has it's own spiritual/emotional challenges that they must overcome, or can fall victim to.
First introduced by Aang's first firebending master Jeong Jeong, fire must be careful of it's passions, or else it will burn across everything, and eventually snuff out everything, including itself.
Water is all about give and take, ebb and flow. The blood moon abilities going to the extremes of control and release. Water isn't something you just swing around, it is a constant rhythm of motion and slipping grip.
Earthbenders are practical, and literally down-to-earth. They can be blunt and stubborn though. Metal-bending meant having to slow down and learn, and to have some give to improve one self, and lava-bending maybe even more so.
Air bending was the calming of a storm. Every single Air bender had the potential to wreak destruction at the slightest whim or turmoil. Imagine just a few Airbender causing a few hurricanes across the world at the same time. They could drastically change the world. They had to measure their Selves and their strengths.

    • @missobama1688

Lava bending I feel would be the most challenging to over come for them, because instead of being head strong and impatient as most earth benders are, you have to slow down and focus on the finest details of the earth, allowing them to create friction within their bonds and in turn, heat up until molten, metal bending just requires patience and awareness of the earth within metals.

Another power of airbenders (which would only be unlocked by true masters) is sound bending, as sound is nothing more but vibrations in the air. I've heard it's actually canonical as this (briefly) appears in the official comics. Sound is actually incredibly powerful and a very versatile weapon. A low frequency blast could crumble walls, break bones, or make you sick and lose coordination. It's possible to hit someone through a wall if the frequency is not harmoneous with the wall (think about stem forks. Equal frequence forks will vibrate along with the one struck). In an enclosed space you'd be even more at a disadvantage as they could also amplify high frequency sounds to bounce off of the walls eventually becoming so intense it could kill you (somewhere above 200 db causes fatal injury). Sound amplification appears in some comic too with Yangchen where she was upset and enraged about something (don't remember what, as I've only heard it described in another clip on an airbender's true potential). Unable to unleash it she went to some very noisy coast where she'd eventually scream hear frustration out amplifying it with airbending to such a degree that the ocean split in two.

Also, let's not forget that waterbenders can extract moisture from the air and maybe turn it into needles or something aerodynamic which can't be countered with airbending. Earthbenders can do metalbending and there are toxic metals in the atmosphere, which, if concentrated into someone's lung, can also kill them. Fire benders can increase humidity or something, but they're at an obvious disadvantage against airbenders. However, lightning can be much faster than airbenders and essentially unblockable. Now, if a firebender manages to blast consecutive lightning bolts or multiple at a time to form a shield around them, I would imagine it would be pretty hard for an airbender to finish the job.

For blood bending, it may be impossible to defend against once it starts the same can be true for air bending if they have the same level of control. Just need to put an air bubble by converging it out of the blood itself and put it in the heart, instant heart attack. The fact the air benders could make an pure air shield/armour against those toxic metals in the atmosphere that will stop that ability from earth benders, and that's if they can even do so since they aren't directly in contact with those particles.
Now lightning can be blocked, but an air bender would need to place ionized/charged air as a spike to draw it in a different direction? Not sure how well that would work however. A total vacuum doesn't stop electricity from crossing. But also in that regard, lightning is a bunch of free electrons and is difficult to product without specific circumstances. Like shuffling against a carpet in socks can do a bit, but is far more effective during the drier winter days than the humid summer ones.

You also forgot about one little-shown, but wildly dangerous thing - slashing and piercing blows of focused air. The series has repeatedly demonstrated how densely focused “wind blades”, without any problems, cut right through wood, stone and even metal, and now imagine what would happen if there was human flesh in the place of the stone. Essentially, airbenders were absolute killers, capable of incredibly fast and coordinated movement, instantly changing positions and trajectories, delivering fatal blows capable of cutting stone, sucking air from the lungs, and from a distance, blocking and redirecting almost any objects and attacks, flying( at least with the help of a staff) and I’m not even raising the issue of “mass” techniques like hurricanes and tornadoes. In general, the authors did the right thing by branding them pacifists, because otherwise any airbender would have been a walking death machine.

The airbenders could try to abandon their peaceful ways to display the threat they can possibly inflict, but with the following consequences:
    1. All air nomads are airbenders because they have the strongest connections with the spirits by being peaceful. If they abandon this, some of them, or maybe even a lot, will probably lose their airbending.
    2. If their airbending won't be gone, it'll be weaker as usual since airbenders have notably kept themselves detached from the world. Holding a grudge would tie them in this "world" and will affect their bending.
    3. They will have to use other motivation to drive their bending, just as how firebenders draw theirs from life-giving and energy into desire of violence during the Hundred Year War.

@@randomimagination1172 in a way you’re right and in a way that can be over looked. You can still be a master Airbender without spirituality. Look at Zaheer. He just got his bending and was looking like a beast. Train him to become a master Airbender and he would be top notch. The spiritual side to airbending is more a culture thing. Jesa’s air bending became weaker because she tethered her spiritual ways for a life of crime. She defied her culture and her teachings and because of that she was weakened. It’s like if you have a scar and you put a bandaid over it, then your scar will be fine. But if you don’t have that scar to begin with then you don’t need to worry about getting the scar infected. That’s a bad comparison but I hope you get me. But if you don’t have those belief or culture then your bending won’t suffer. Avatar yangchen has killed before, but her Air bending is never stated to have gotten weaker. While spirituality adds to an Airbenders bending, it doesn’t over all determine if they can be stronger than an Airbender who has or doesn’t have a spiritual side.
