I think that was only possible because the Galactic Republic existed at the same time. They kept each other in check, had their own force order, and had more modest ambitions.
All despite also being run by a Sith Emperor. It's like Palp learned nothing from that time period.

The Venator wasn’t ever retired fully. They were still in service after A New Hope. There’s a warlord in Star Wars who had over 100 Venator and Acclimator class assault ships and he didn’t just poop them out of his butt. The Venator just stopped being produced. as long as it was in good condition stayed in imperial service until it was too broken to fix. If not it was scrapped.

Another nice thing about the Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier is that it can actually house the TIEs that are being ferried around by the Gozanti-class and Arquitens-class light cruisers. In the hanger bays they have the space to do all of the maintenance and repair needed to keep all the TIEs in the patrol fleet up and running. I can imagine some of the Gozanti-class cruisers used their outsized cargo capacity to keep the other ships supplied on longer patrols as well. These three ships are very complementary.

If the empire had taken those credits and built lots of the cruisers in this video, and more tie fighters, maybe some tie defenders, and a few ISDs they could’ve had so much more military power than they did with the death stars. Or yk, they could’ve invested it in the economy, and infrastructure and actually helped the people… but they’re the empire so lots of gozantis is probably the best we could’ve hoped for

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 Před 15 dny +16

The post Refermation Republic should have mass produced medium cruisers for planetary defence fleets, to take advantage of economies of scale.
Planetary fleets can buy them at a subsidised cost or they can be assigned, or a mixture of both systems - with careful bookkeeping to prevent them being onsold to pirates ect.
That would enable a vast amount of practical mid sized military ships to be available to patrol the regions outside the Core.
In effect they become like police cars bought by departments from a manufacturer with a standardised design.
It is definitely a lot cheaper and more practical than every police department having to commission their own squad car designs.
Except they are also the local Coast Guard.
And in times of war they can be requisitioned to join as a form of GAR.
But in day to day operations they are the patrol fleet of a inhabited system, owned and operated by that systems government.
A from the ground up Galactic Navy, instead of top down.
Like if the Galaxy Fleet all bought from the same lot with a package deal.

The majority of a spaceship's costs aren't in the initial procurement, they are in maintenance and supply.
So systems just bought whatever they could afford to maintain and whatever had available parts.
Creating artificial monopolies through government spending is a bad idea.

    • @InvictusByz
      @InvictusByz Před 15 dny +1

What about when one of those planetary militias turns Separatist? They'd begin the conflict with an intimate understanding of the GAR's available arsenal and the ability to capture and use GAR assets. Plus when the various militias are called up to serve, there's a risk of major political friction regarding command structures, for example between systems that have paid for their own assets but use them poorly and systems whose defense is heavily subsidized but they use their forces extremely well.
There's definitely merit to the idea, but its a trade off. That said, its definitely better than having no standing army, and no regional defense support. Personally, I see Star Citizen's system of Militia and Standing Navy to be a bit more elegant. You use the same economies of scale, but regional militias aren't buying the *exact* same ship, they're buying Peacekeeper and Civilian variants of the same hull, usually just missing a few weapon hardpoints or military exclusive systems, and both forces are meant to exist in tandem, focusing on different priorities that their variant classes each cater towards.

In the meantime I came up with a solution involving a modernized Gozanti, 2 RZ1's, and a homemade shuttle that I came up with. It could patrol 6 systems at a time with the shuttles operating in pairs non-stop, while the Gozanti with it's 2 RZ1 would patrol a 7th. Each of the 7 groups would operate mostly independently but would periodically make scheduled refueling roundezvous with the Gozanti.

Rome had a great idea for incorporating conquered territory.
When their soldiers retired after 10 or more years of duty, they were given land in a conquered place.
Many soldiers, even a whole legion, would retire together; and settle, with their families. Basically creating a new Roman town.
The government was able to: pay their soldiers and put them to peacetime work, with the funds they'd use for creating a new colony. Furthermore, you'd have a colony populated by trained soldiers. Who'd defend their new home at no extra cost to the state. Which would otherwise have needed to afford a garrison. Plus, you be able to recruit capable soldiers from these towns.
New territory secured and developed while ensuring old soldiers don't become bandits or help a rival overthrow you.

In a galaxy with such expansive wealth and unimaginable population, it is actually quite possible to have a significant military presence on every inhabited planet and moon. It just would have to be a practical presence. (Like a small orbital garrison with two or three platoons of foot soldiers, a squadron of well-rounded and tough fighter craft, a Gozanti-class cruiser, and a bunch of probe droids keeping an eye on things).

The Imperial Navy was either designed to refight the Clone War but do it better or, in Legends, to prepare to fight the Yuzang Vong. The problem was that the Navy was mismatched for the tasks it was assigned.

Lastly the average Outerim would population if u look at the essential atlas, is anywhere from a few million which is actually pretty rare if u actually google all the planets in the outer rim. Plenty named ones have populations in the tens or hundreds of millions.. and quite a few even have billions or the rarer tens of billions.

The one ship the Empire seemed to need but you so rarely see was the Interdictor. The Alliances tactic was Hit and Fade (the tactic of assymetricall warfare.) Interdictor comes in and you need to take it out before you can fade. Yes they are weaker so need more protection, but they are giving time for the ISD to do its thing, and that's not something you want to be on recieving end of. (I say ISD as its the poster child, the smaller ships mentioned in this video work better, but again need time that the Alliance wont give.)

I can't say I even really like Star Wars anymore. That isn't to say I don't think fondly about some of it (original trilogy, kotor 1-2, republic commando, to name some). But I don't care about the last 15 years or so worth of stuff and have no desire to revisit anything from the franchise at all. Yet for some reason I still sit here watching SW videos from this guy alone. (well, if sacred cow shipyards does a video on SW stuff, i'll watch that too, but he talks about a lot more than just SW)

You know something I ocasionally think of in starwars terms is what the empire should have been using to hunt down rebels instead squardrons of 3 or 4 stardestroyers, and what that comes down to is something like a squadron of 1 or 2 star destroyers as command ships with teeth, then at least 2 fully loaded venators for fighters support and bombing runs, finally an interdictor cruiser or 2, and at least 2 arquintens cruisers for every one of those larger ships to deal with the massive investment the rebels have in strike fighters. That way you can have a tight little squadron that can go around dealing with potentially very large rebel groups left right and center instead of sending inumerable amounts of resources in the form of star destroyers and death stars with 0 point defence that just get poped by a garbage scow full of explosives ramming the bridge.
    Edit.
I suppose I can ammend that fleet mix to replace a quarter of those arquintens cruisers with about 20-30 gizanti cruisers, half of which would be scouts equipped with tie defenders and the other half would be ground support equipped with AT-TEs for that matter I would want all my tie fighters to be defender or at least intereceptor class rather than the standard styrofoam block class.

Generation Tech: Smaller ships does show a thought process in writting. Smaller ships is going to be faster from a technological point of view. The Rebel Alliance being able to do surgical strikes, and speed is immportant. Why bring an entire armada when a couple C4 devices, completes the mission. The empire proved too much reliance on larger ships, with severe weak points. one thing i dislike is blastable bits on the outerhull. I have a really good idea, lets place Ammo, and plasma storage containers over our armor. The Starwars Rebels is lucky, i am not doing the planning for the Imperial war machine. Hint: The DeathStar would not have majical vents. I would have little baseball sized projectiles, Silent but once going off, your fighters is not coming back.

If each one wielded its full complement of available weapons and craft then the ISD wouldn't even land a shot on the Venator. V-wings would screen out the TIEs and then the ISD gets hit with multiple bombing runs.

Oddly, there was a ship type missing from Star Wars lore (because it's not glamorous) - the fleet supply vessel. Supplying the infrastructure of the Imperial fleets (and armies) requires scores of medium to large transports. Subcontracting most or all of the infrastructure to the private sector creates a platform for military information bleeding out to Imperial enemies as well as a galactic money pit. Using ISDs as freighters is a misallocation of resources. Therefore, there should be a "space-born mobility" division of the Imperial navy.

Absolutely! I love whenever a Sci-fi property shows the smaller logistics vessels it makes the world feel alive. The only logistics ships I know about in Star Wars are the Altor-Class Replenishment Ship, The Imperial Light Tanker, the Zeta-Class Shuttle, and the zeta's big brother the Eta-Class Supply Barge.

There were plenty of Outerim worlds loyal to the empire. And the ones that weren’t were usually suppressed fairly easily cause many didn’t have extremely militarized worlds. A few months of a complain and the war on that would was pretty much over. Just look at mocala. It took like 1 day for the empire to conquer It and it had a huge fleet on it.
