  • I've decided to keep my Focus RS rather than sell it, and therefore we must make it faster. So we went down to Mountune USA and had some upgrades installed! The car showed gains of 26 WHP and 91 WTQ on the World Motorsports Wind Tunnel Dyno. I was then joined by Sam from Seen Through Glass for my first blast through the canyons after the tune.
    Check out Sam's channel here:
    / seenthroughglass
    All parts installed on the car are listed below with links. Buy them for yourself at: www.mountuneusa...
    FULL DISCLOSURE: Magnaflow and Mountune USA provided these parts and installation to me at no cost in exchange for making this video.
    Check out all my modifications on Wheelwell!

    This video is funny. As a subscriber of sams channel, he is totally lost when you talk technically about the modifications. In the U.K. You get your car wrapped, fit a better exhaust and a carbon wing, that's it, nothing more. Haha Sam, back to normal soon mate.

      I'd say it depends on the wrap. Some wraps don't even get into the door jambs so, as you would imagine, they don't make much power.

    I'm sure when people have more tune history on the RS's you'll start seeing a tune add 30-40hp to the wheels. I have no doubt overtime that a basic bolt-on RS will be hitting 350-370hp to the wheels. New wrx's are hitting 300-325hp with the basic bolt-on's so I'm sure the RS can get much high numbers

    The first thing I would do on this car would be to optimize the suspension. The car is far too stiff for no reason. A bit more supple and comfortable suspension would make this car A LOT more fun to own.

      For now. How long before we see cams, heads, intake, and exhaust on that thing. It already has all the suspension parts on it and we know that motor can put down better numbers on pump gas. Not only that they're probably comparable in weight too.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 7 lety +9

      nezerac mustang is 340 lbs lighter than the RS, but right now it's down on power too. Mustang makes 270 WHP and 300 WTQ, which is fun. But like you said, now that I have suspension, brake, and tire to back it up, next year I'm gonna add some power. AFR heads, probably, and I'm really feeling that ITB setup too. So sick. After that should be making 350 WHP and quite stout.

  • @vulcanproject
    @vulcanproject Před 7 lety +5

    The car is so good but the noise is soooo disappointing when you hear it after the mk2 Focus RS and the 5 cylinder. From a technical perspective the new Focus RS is better in every way. But from a character standpoint and a car you can fall in love with, it falls way shorter.

  • @anoid3433
    @anoid3433 Před 7 lety

    On another review, they talk about track mode and the fact that you can still adjust the suspension in that mode. They said it was the best of both worlds. You get all of the rest of the handling and power and a more compliant suspension. They really gave it a lot of flexibility.

      It weighs 1599kg, though. That's fat for a hatch by anyone's measure. As a result, the stock car has no better a power to weight ratio than a '95 WRX STI, E36 M3 or RX7 Bathurst. Even tuned, it's the same as a 1984 Testarossa or 2003 Jag XJR.

      @Christdeliverme Před 7 lety +1

      This is a modern trend in 4 cylinder cars.
      Running the turbos off the map stock with undersized turbine.
      The first thing I'd do in any of these vehicles is sacrifice 1500 rpm spool for a turbo that makes power another 1500 RPM to fuel cut. I hate cars that lose urgency top end, it's underwhelming, boring and disappointing every single time you go through the gears.
      This is why I like 6 cylinders with huge turbos. You've still got enough torque to daily drive without it being horrible (because you're driving normally) but makes power until you take your foot out of it.
      Also, I don't race from 2800-4000 rpm but for 2 seconds in first gear. The rest of that, we never see that RPM again.

    • @koopatroopa187
      @koopatroopa187 Před 7 lety +1

      +Beau Mancini "Also, I don't race from 2800-4000 rpm but for 2 seconds in first gear. The rest of that, we never see that RPM again." Then perhaps you should spend less time at the drag strip...

    • @Christdeliverme
      @Christdeliverme Před 7 lety

      koopatroopa187 trying to be nice here, but why do you suggest I only give that throttle the boot at the drag strip? Matt isn't in any video. if you find yourself under 4000 rpm, switch gears. unless of course you're trying to set a car up for Christmas: Mall Parking Lot Nationals trials (autocross) I'd still say you're in the wrong gear anyways.
      there really isn't a time if you're properly racing where you're stuck in low rpms, so not sure what you hoped to gain mentioning it. and lastly of course when I'm not racing around, i don't need ask of that power around town when I spend the time at low Rpm.

    • @koopatroopa187
      @koopatroopa187 Před 7 lety

      Beau Mancini Because some courses have very tight turns where shifting into first is going to do nothing but require you to shift again in another second while gaining no speed because you're sitting on the rev limiter, so it would be beneficial to just let the revs fall and let your gearing and/or torque get you back up to speed. There is a reason why most race cars produce massive amounts of torque at the lower RPMs. Also, you're going to get bogged down in traffic anyways, or do you not spend any time in traffic much like you spend no time in the lower spectrum of the tachometer?

    Sounds fantastic, this time next year the RS will be getting took further, bigger turbo etc and seeing what it can really do

  • @numinous4789
    @numinous4789 Před 7 lety +1

    I sure hope those RS rods are stout. Coming from the perspective of the Ecoboost engine's older cousin (the MZR DISI 2.3 Turbo in Mazdaspeed 3s/6s), seeing that much torque spiking that quickly that low in the powerband makes me pucker. Those rods are seeing tremendous forces. For comparison, I'm tuned to stay at only 380wtq, and my peak is @4,300 or so. The ramp-up is also tuned to be slower as well. Basically, we were very intentional about torque management because the alternative is a vented block. Practical wisdom and 10 years of platform experience/vetting out has shown I'm at the upper "safe" range with this type of tuning strategy.
    Then again, blowing up RSes is how you'll find the limits - a very important first step in the modding community surrounding a new platform. But I don't wish that on you! (To be clear.) Hope you have many, many miles of fun with the RS.
    Also, you may want to go up to a full 3" exhaust. When I did my mild turbo upgrade, I got stuck at 360whp. I had full 3" all the way to the axle-back, a stock 2.5" muffler. Just finishing out that with 3" and a Magnaflow 14419 (which sounds AMAZING) had me at 395whp on the very next run (same tune and everything). Basically, my car was choking. That 2.75" should take you further, but practical wisdom is 4" is the sweet spot for ~400whp (not that you're there quite yet, but with WMI or a little ethanol, I'm sure you easily could be by adding timing). It could help address your power falling off at redline too.

      @numinous4789 Před 7 lety

      TheSmokingTire FYI, the Mazdaspeed has forged rods from the factory as well. Just be careful; "forged" and "strong" are associated, but not guaranteed. Many companies have already begun making stronger engine internals for the RS, including stronger forged rods.

      @black98rt Před 7 lety

      I've always wondered about all the torque down low like that. Has to be hard on the rod bearing too I would think. Also curious how long the stock turbos will last after a tune.

  • @mccahillryan

    Disclaimer, I'm not sure if this was taken care of by your tune - however, your engine performance is optimized by putting it in track mode, and you can compensate for the stiffness by setting the dampers back to a more comfortable ride setting by using a knob on the left side of your steering wheel. I know this works for a stock RS, not sure if your aftermarket tube took care of that...

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 7 lety +1

      Ryan McCahill with this tune you get full beans in all modes. Sport only changes throttle sensitivity and exhaust valve, and track only does suspension now.

    • @mccahillryan
      @mccahillryan Před 7 lety

      Matt, that's sort of what I figured, but I know from a friend that on the stock RS he would set it to track mode and dial back the stiffness with the adjustment knob.
