- As we prepare our 2016 Ford Focus RS for rally competition, we test the car in production form against a turbo Subaru Open Class rally car in the snow at the Team O'Neil Rally School. The Focus RS at this point has downsized brakes, bilstein shocks, 15" wheels, ABS deleted, and a skid plate. Otherwise it is completely stock. The Subaru is period correct full Prodrive built 2.0L car with dogbox transmission, ProFlex suspension, active center diff, etc. Stay tuned for news on our Ford Focus RS rally builds!

Hi and thanks for tuning in! Our CZcams channel was recently switched to a brand account from a personal one and some past comments were lost as a result. Please ask any questions you have and we’ll get to them as quickly as possible, thanks again for watching, don’t forget to hit like, subscribe, and enjoy!
Team O'Neil Rally School may i ask why does subaru have 2 fuel pump?
just a stupid Q of mine ahahahahah
Desperately searching for the skid plate on the RS. Any help?
How did you defeat the ABS on the Focus??
Probably pulled some fuses? You can do that on the rentals when you want to get a little sideways in a front wheel drive too.@@tbomblamo
Those old school Imprezas are the best looking Subarus ever.
GC FTW.
I will agree. That Subaru is one sexy car.
I love the 2006 version
Subaru p1 has got to be the best looking of them all
I ranked them 22b, V5/6, then P1
That Subaru sounds amazing. It's awesome though you guys are probably the only ones actually driving the RS like it should! Look forward to seeing more.
The only real here is a FORD
The subie is a gc8 rally car. A 2.5rs is a gm6
Would have liked to have seen the driver's switch cars, too.
that Subaru sounds absolutely delicious !!
Sure did... wow!
Is it bad that I'm lusting more after the STI than the RS?
Nope, not bad at all.
Johnny Martinez who wouldn't?
Car and Driver show the STI was quicker in the 1/4 mile stock for stock. That's with a 12 year old engine! The RS is a great car but I'm with you; the STI still calls.
+Steve W Car and Driver show the RS still quicker than the new STI in the quarter mile and 0-60, where are you getting your info?
no because it was specifically built to be a rally car where as the focus is a stock production car.
Scooby don't need no Ken Block mode
Geoff Goldplum imagine if they had a McRae mode, don't think the drivers would be able to use its full potential! No one could rally like McRae
McRae mode - stuck at open throttle, no backing off whatsoever.
When in doubt...
flat out !!
Ryan Tua Somehow I think a Collin McRae mode wouldn't work out very favourably, marketing wise.
Geoff Goldplum too soon ;)
love the sound of that subie.
Quite crazy for a stock car being able to keep up with rally spec car. That's impressive.
Wish I saw this video before I bought the st over the rs lol
i'd take the subaru in any scenario.
Me too. Just so much character and it sounded sooooo good.
the boxer engine sounds GORGEOUS!!! always loved the sound of them subies
I like the RS and own a Fiesta ST mk7. But I'd take the STi as well. Mainly because the old ones are going up in value atm :)
Pan tera too bad modern Subarus suck! I have driven the new Focus RS and it is what Subaru used to be!
Like legit Subarus redesign was a disaster! No improvements to the engine, no hatchback, and the lights look fugly!
Seriously to all you haters, try driving the RS! I will take the RS or Golf R over the Sti any day!
you can manually lock up or open STI's diff. great fun in snow/mud. on tarmac tho, which is what normal people buy cars for, STI understeers no matter how you config the diff. so i'd take RS anyday.
edit: also, RS's torque vectoring is better. engine directly sends power to the individual wheel that has grip. while STI's "torque vectoring" is just a glorified ABS.
Both are amazing cars! I owned a 2004 WRX and it was a joy to drive :) Currently seeking a RS to bring back those sweet AWD memories!
Wow. That's actually a prodrive built WRC car and certainly not a STI, however that is a stock Focus RS. When Tim said he was driving a very expensive rally car he really meant that. I think it did show how things have come on over 20 years and also how some of that rally technology is now available in a relatively cheap car from Ford. Great video guys, I bet you had a lot of fun making it.
Lol watching the Subaru just intentionally flailing around while the RS is being driven with care. Very scientific. Perhaps next time you can drag race the focus with a F1 car that's doing a burn out the entire way.
ye he drove it like a bitch tbh

@@theo21091 he drove like a bitch 😂 omg love to see your vids of your driving on snow
@@TunedVXR ah yes the good ol "you cannot criticize something if you cant do it better yourself" get lost mate
@@xav1uz who the fuck is this guy🤣🤣 are you rapid response team for the comment section 😅 "get lost mate" what a hell of a finisher 🙌 I'm certainly lost now 🙄
Great side by side video. Thanks guys for putting it together.
I drive a 99 2 door RS in winter time. Even tho it has a NA engine that thing grips in the snow with proper tires. This guy was having too much fun on the subie. I be waiting for the next video.
Osvaldo Valencia same...I went up against my friends 07 evo after work for fun an I smoke him to where it was not fun anymore and we stopped . that set up in this video was a joke.
this was a pretty cool video, I loved the drone shots, especially at the end! well done
New favorite channel. You two are great! Also top notch driving!
Oh folks, what a fun you have there in the cold yet warm winter! God bless you and that place!
a scooby pulls on the heart strings in a way a ford never will. except maybe a mk2 escort
Sorry, but the RS badge has more nostalgia than Subaru's nameplates. It was around rallying that much longer. The RS200 was one of the reasons a group in WRC was wiped from existence because it was too insane for rallying even. Sure, I miss the old WRX/STI vs Evo era too. But the RS has it's own mystique. Just they were a bit more before their times perhaps.
jrzez that new RS isn't an rs200. The new sti does very little for me too. Saving up for a Sti type r v3 :)
jrzez that new RS isn't an rs200. The new sti does very little for me too. Saving up for a Sti type r v3 :
Mike Seeds rs200 will destroy any Subaru junk and Mitsubishi gtfo
Boosted 4.6
The RS200 is/was terrible.
A group B prepped 22b STI will walk all over it.
And because you seem like the stereotypical butthurt Ford guy who'd complain that the two machines are from different time periods, I'd put it against the final evolution UR Quattro...in pikes peak form.
I know Ford has a long and varied motorsports heritage and I respect that but someone like yourself needs his ego deflated every now and then.
Some how people still can't comprehend that Ford can make rally cars when they've been doing it for over a decade.
Ford UK in my opinion was the best until One Ford Standardized all fords
Xaionik over a decade?
Dude, Ford has been doing rally since the 1970s
exactly " over a decade"
jeff666p well, TeamRS has been doing it since 1963, so it's more like half a century of rallying.
Still over a decade lol
"So we have rubber tires on an icy road its a bit of a challenge " says the badass drifting in the subaru effortlessly all the while looking directly at the camera during mid drift hahahaha just awsome
That looks like soooo much freakin fun :D :D :D
That subie rumble along with those turbo spools sound insane
Both are cool and respectable cars. Thanks for the video. One suggestion, you guys should've switched vehicles.
Tim O'Neil is awesome, nice, and he can drive. Loved your school Tim!
This video was way fun to watch. I was smiling the whole time it was on!
That's a fun and interesting comparison. I know that the Impreza is a full-on rally car AND the RS is largely stock. Even so, part of what it shows me is that the basic dynamics of the first generation Legacies and Imprezas were quite good for their time. The same can be said of the '90s Evos. That's why these cars still have a loyal following.
I love how enthusiastic they are about what they’re doing
would like to know what tires they had on...assuming they were winter tires.
Interested in how you get on with the focus. I'm just using the running gear to go into a s1600 puma shell.
Travis -- loved those Victory Donuts around the Boss; can't wait to drive the RS! Winter is coming...
Knowing the differences in weight between these two vehicles would really help me in judging the performance of the Ford in this test.
Daniel Private stock ford weighs 1550kg. The wrx probably weighs 1250kg
1250 is the standart weight, this one is empty i think i touches the 1100kg
It's not an insignificant difference in weight then. Which actually makes the Ford's performance more impressive. Thanks for the help.
the dude in the subaru was intentionally losing time since you can tell by watching he over drifted almost every corner to make it seem like a fair race. obviously the subaru would win in a real rally
no its the short wheelbase; they tend to oversteer alot easier which can be a good thing! The focus RS is longer and has torque vectoring which is why it was more composed.
great testing and video!
Awesome snow drifting guys !!! Both cars are great in my opinion !
Looking forward to more of these! Even if the RS isn't better it's still interesting to see it go up against a traditional rally car.
Good vid, thanks for putting this together
Great video, I do feel like the track mode would have been quicker around that course than drift mode, but it's probably pretty close.
That subie is AWESOME !
I did a one day rally school at Team Oneil. It was SO much fun.
Great vid, will keep following this series. I have an interest in the RS for obvious reason that I own one and interested to see how well it evolves. Also, would love to visit you guys, but you're a little of a trip away from me in the keystone state. But... I guess it's not too far... hmm.
@teamoneil have you guys heard about the head gasket issues on the RS?
amazing video.
just shows how much technology has moved on.
its a full on race car, against a road legal car, and they are fairly similar in performance. and thats fucking amazing.
yes i know that if they put studded tires, the subaru suspension and diffs will be able to make better use of the extra traction and be faster, but still...
This is the reason I personally would never tune or modify a vehicle. If you want a faster car, buy a faster car. It's as simple as that.
Derptrollz
i would also like to be able to afford a 911 gt3 for example, but i simply cant.
besides, the joy of putting your personal work on your vehicle is priceless for some of us.
if tuning is done right its much more efficient. of course there is the bad side of "tuning" where we see ridiculous cars that are simply worthless for anything.
but thankfuly that kind of "tuning" died as fast as it was born, along with the fast&furious movies and the need for speed games
That subaru is road legal too
***** correct, it was wrong choice of words on my side. I meant a car that is factory stock.
Yeah but the ford is commercial and expensive.. the sti is simple and gets the job done. If you have extra money to throw away i guess the RS is sick
great video. We love driving this little car
Weren´t the WRC GC8s of the late 90´s 2-doors though? With wider arches?
2:28 I've heard it said that this specific wing came on coupes only. Anyone know if it's true?
Awesome video!
Oh my God snow drifting is beautiful!
cool video thanks for posting :) both cars are great!
very cool looking forward for more. I drive a wrx sometimes (little brothers) and I somwtimes push wide with it when trying to play on snow compared to my RWD car. Any tips on keeping the subie going sideways and not push wide?
Scandinavian flick, works everytime
Mortalomena your brothers wrx has an open front diff and viscous rear. The car in the video probably has a front lsd , 35:65 dccd center and plated rear differential
Subscribed after he said "Sports-mode, track-mode, KEN BLOCK-mode"! Great video
does anyone know why he said, "people say the focus isn't really an all wheel drive car"?
any insight would be appreciated. thank you.
Can you share what flaps and skid plate are on the RS?
the view from the drone is priceless
It's pretty obvious the Subie driver is slowing down on purpose to keep the RS within camera distance. Why did he take the car sideway unnecessarily knowing that it will slow the car down. I know in Rally videos you do that to setup the next corner but there's no purpose to drifting the car on a straight other than slow it down. Notice the RS takes the quicker route by keeping the car straight on path.
Vision33r OK so what's your excuse for when they lined these two cars up for the straight towards the end of the video and had a race? I didn't see the Impreza going sideways to let the RS catch up. Technology is a wonderful thing and that RS did great for a car that you can buy as is from any Ford dealership.
mkvmyfast Perhaps it's because there are no turns in a drag race lol. If you look at the Subaru while cornering, not only was he drifting at too high of an angle to be going through the corner at a high, efficient speed, but he also didn't take the best line either
mkvmyfast the tires mods don't mean shit if you don't have the fit tires
Valkarez actually it's both
Maybe because they have deal with Ford?
RS is truly a dream car! One day maybe i'll get one
Do you not use real rally studded tires in the US? looks very slippery out for the Subaru?
THOSE MUDFLAPS ON THE RS ARE SWEET
What's the name of the oz rims that are on the Ford Foucs RS?
Just recently picked up a 2002 WRX and I am just too happy with my decision. She might not be perfect, but she has some good character. Hoping with the proper care she'll give me another 17 years.
I love both of these cars
So how's the focus doing now compared to this Subaru you wanted to match up?
I like the potential of the Focus RS. I'd like to see what you guys bring.
did you ever grade phantom footage?....
What kind of ecu are you running in the Subaru?
I absolutely love the pigeon turbo flutter sound these subarus make 😍😍😍
It's amazing what 20 years of technology and horsepower will get you.
It would be interesting to see what one person could do in both cars, timed.
I just got a RS a few months ago and from what i have experienced in snow/ice is.... In drift mode the car is vary unpredictable some times the tail will come out on you and other times it wont and if it does come out your not sure how far out it will kick. It makes it vary hard to predict what the cars going to do when going in to a corner. I’ve found the best mode for snow and ice is “Race Mode” with tcs esc all the way off(hold the tcs button for 10-20 sec “after your in Race Mode” ) it makes the car way more predictable and vary tail happy.(DISCLAIMER: all driving aids/driving nannies are disabled so be carefully) Hope this helps other RS owners out. Great video and cant wait to see this RS ripping it.
Here is the real question who had more fun
I think we all know...
Valkarez Who said you have to drive it daily
I always notice with the earlier Imprezas that they tend toward oversteer more than modern rally cars do. From memory they had a simpler LSD in those earlier models, so the diffs would lock up quicker round corners. They are always being driven sideways..! It could be a difference in driving style, but the Focus seems to be tidier and tighter in the turns..
How will it do against a new 2018 STI?
Why downsized brakes? Because of the smaller wheels for snow tires?
Great video
Love that WRC spec SUBY!
The Impreza is always a joy to watch and listen to. But man, the newer Ford Focus have come a long way and I gotta give Ford props. I wouldn't mind having one of these Focus RS.
What is that crip crip sound whe off the throttle ??? In the wrx ?!!!
Looks like a blast.
If the 2021 sti ends up being a flop, does anyone know how reliable a 2018 rs is? Might trade my wrx for a sti or rs. Live in the north so awd is a must for year round driving.
makes me want a focus rs even more
"gets focus rs" 25k miles later "blows motor"
Pedro Dabb why yoo think that?
Pedro Dabb will be 5k not 25k lol. Exhaust flaps stick (mine did after 3500 miles), suddenly veering to one side at 70mph when holding the wheel straight - NOT torque steer for those uneducated people who suggest it(unless torque steer magically appears at 70mph on a 2.3 engine LOL. Not a supercharged 5.0 v8 lads).. Ford mechs say “agree it’s dangerous” Ford say “characteristic”. I said crap and sold it within 6 months of buying it. Worst car I ever bought.
any one knows the name of the song play in the background ?
thank you thank you thank you
Whoa! That RS is impressive. I’m glad I’ve got one........
Well done!
Is that subie straight piped would love to know thanks!!!
Yes straight but with a catalytic converter (rally rules).
Very cool that the RS allows you to still set the driving mode and traction control as you want even when its not happy about the tire pressure. The corvette design team needs to learn from this...
Why u dont need plate on intercooler ?
Isnt this rs with suspension changed?
very well done!
I mean, I dont know too much about cars but doesnt the subaru have way too little grip compared to the rs? look at the angles. I wonder if thats a point for the focus suspension or if its a tyres thing cus if thats the case the whole comparison kind of loses the pont
ooh that Scooby makes me happy 😁
Nice!
Can't say I've driven either - I did work at a Subaru dealer for a while and the center of gravity on all subaru's is astounding - reminds me of the FC RX7 (T2) I own. I have been messing around on Assetto Corsa and I downloaded a few Focus RS mods to try out and the weight transfer and center of gravity on 'em (albeit 'recreations' in a 'simulation') was absolutely atrocious... Lots of power and good torque though...
Nice camera work
wow ok im impressed
The Subie makes lovely turbo noises
Name of Music in this video?
that looked like good fun
awesome!
Impressive result for a stock car, even if the Impreza is 20 years old. You took out of the equation the Subaru was driven for fun, whereas the Ford for time, maybe next time you put the DCCD in lock, so the tail is a little less loose
Okay I love in MA and I need to go to this school need info
What is subaru's production date?
That video was great. Just need an inspire to get the proper aerial shots without legs and smoother pans. Cheers
