- I filmed Moe Norman with his permission at a private Natural golf event for instructors only.
Based on my more than 20+ years experience in learning from Moe, studying his swing, and teaching it I personally do not believe it to be a good idea to exactly copy Moe's golf swing. I agree. Different body types would dictate a different swing, but the execution should be similar.
I’m kinda tall and slender, but I incorporate the sequence of the single plane.
I’ve been conventional swinging all my life, up until about 2 years ago, now the single plane feels more natural to me now.

Why not replicate it? Doesn’t matter body type as you can see he’s not in the best of shape. his movements are the most natural based on the way the body hits a ball with a a stick.

Wow! I have just been watching Manual De La Torre videos and just read the Ernest Jones book and then I come on here and Moe is talking about them. Surreal.

Following cataract surgery in Dec. 2021, I could, again, see the ball when hit. I started playing again after decades away from the game. I believe Moe Norman “owns his swing” and came to it honestly through very hard work and endless self evaluation. I don’t believe he is the only person who could and did come to the idea of the single plane concept. What he did do is create a swing for himself that has worked spectacularly well and has been adapted,in part and in whole as a system for teaching others. I am 75 and here’s what the single plane swing did for me in the year since I began emulating Todd Graves emulation of Moe Norman. I began the year as a mid 90’s player and am now a mid 80’s player. I recently broke 80 for the first time. I have been practicing most of Moe’s swing as taught by Graves on his free You Tube channel. There are parts of the swing that I struggle with so I have adopted a couple work arounds. Over all, it has been successful for me. What I work hard to emulate is the upper body mechanics, including grip, from set up through impact. My shots, good and bad, are all much straighter and my driving distance is the best in my group which is close in age to me. Thanks Moe!
Almost your age and agree did not work all that great till I took a lesson from a former Graves, Natural Golf instructor.. he bent some of Graves Rules a little and now I play in the low 80's all the time...putting keeps me out of the 70's....
Imagine Moe was around this time at the same age and had his own CZcams channel and was testing equipment on flight scope!!! . Can you imagine the views and manufacturers either begging or scared to give him their equipment?. You know one thing for sure you wont be getting dud or variable hits like the other testers. And he sure will be telling everyone which equipment was good or bad no bs!
Moe is just naturally talented. He has that ability to put the club on the ball very precisely. Also he absolutely believes in himself which is super important. I think he could hit it solid with any kind of set up or method.
His right shoulder going down on the downswing is the key move to any golf swing. Basically hes rotating around his tilted spine, in plane.

Moe= I can't hit a bad shot if I tried.
Me= I can't hit a good shot if I tried.
What Moe said he did and what he actually did were often two different things. An example is we’re he said he never used his hands/wrists. This is NOT what happens in his or anyone else’s swing.
Moe didn’t supinate his left hand and “in his mind’s eye” he had eliminated usage of his hands/wrists.
He gripped the club very tightly which eliminated wrist movement.

You would be totally incorrect... I spent a day on the course with Gary Player when he was over 80 and shot 75. He said all day "no hands!" People like you who urge people to use their hands are why only 2% of golfers EVER break 80.

Most golfers don't know that moe and Mike Austin and other good strikers I that you can't play from 12 o'clock to 12 o'clock unless you understand that when moe sets up from the ball his lead shoulder is up rears down he's on a 45 degree plane from shoulder to shoulder is at a 45 But once he's in his back swing his first move is to rotate his feet towards where he always says to do you don't aim to the flag from a square stance you set up hips feet and shoulders then grip the club lead hand first then get some side bend with your rear hip pushed in towards where your swinging to you get this side bend by reaching down you rear leg where you finger tips are about half way down your thigh that puts you in side bend which helps you get your club back and swing through on a 45 degree plane so when you get the club back using your spine the club will automatically bend your tail arm around your ribcage and you hips will rotate till they stop and if you look at yourself you will see you hips and shoulders are on a 45 NOW here the swing your first move on the down stroke is rotate your feet towards the fairway or flag or whatever your aiming for rotate hips belly and along with your feet twords the flag don't worry about your hands and arms let your spine swing you're arms from shoulder to shoulder which is on a 45 degree plane you feet hips belly chest go to were you want. It's feels really weird but it works great and when you get good at it you can really smack the ball

Doing it on the range and under pressure is another, he played on the PGA made some cuts that's about it.
@@dscwac396 I read his best on PGA tour was a 14 place finish in New Orleans I believe he gave up around that time....his two Masters he missed the cut both times...again the speed of greens was something he was not used to...
@@gordenscottfan310755 Masters no cut Moe withdrew after 3rd round the cut started in 56. Moe's best finish was 4th not 14th. Ben Hogan played on Tour for 7 seasons before his first win.
People make a big deal about the swing but despite the idiosyncrasies it's just an outstandingly grooved, fundamentally solid swing. There's really nothing revolutionary about it. People swing like their personalities. Quirky guy, quirky swing.
I litterelly got back from the range trying to hit like Moe and in this video he said he changed the swing and now is more in front of him.....disappointing
In 2001 Moe has refined/simplified his swing and narrowed his stance and abandoned that disorderly unnatural behavior what might be called extreme inside out around the body/ribs back arms lag and curtailed the legs hips movements as an extra unnecessary movements. He now clamed he is more consistent and gained 30 yards with the driver and that his arms swinging the whole club back and through the inclined circular plane and hands doing nothing, hands are just griping the club, and he says that golf is a circular motion no insides-outsides or unnecessary motion, and followed more closely to the path of the back swing's inclined circular plane, the key to Moe's swing is the acceleration thought the ball at impact with his wrist to deliver the backswing's stored elastic and gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy, keep it simple stupid.

Well, I shot the video. Todd was not there as far as I can remember.
Why wouldn’t he want to show it? If you think that moe “changed his whole swing” in this video and therefor everything Todd graves teaches is crap, is total nonsense. Moe talked out of his a$$ for lack of better terminology. He didn’t charge anything, he had the same swing his entire life, he just got older and a little more senile it appears in this video.

Just think of the year this was filmed 2001!!! There was no thought then that this would end up being viewed online, as there was no such option. I only filmed this for my own education. Luckily it survived many years before getting put up here.

I filmed this 21 years ago with a video camera with actual tapes in it. Too bad I did not have today's technology back then. We could have had Moe in 4K.

Far from single plane.
Moe never used those terms, and certainly did not swing on a single plane.
Sound as Moe’s technique is it’s odd that he never won anything , I have read stories of why and also Loren Rubenstien’s book but given his confidence in his own ability one would think this would overcome his inability to cope with fame and fortune but like Hogans technique not to be copied unless you are graced with the hand eye coordination of these men and can devote all your waking hours and some of your sleep time to striking a golf ball.
Moe won a lot of tournaments.
The golf swing is not about eye hand coordination. EHC implies you manipulate the club for best contact. You really don't except for a specialty shots. A great swing is the opposite of manipulation.
Won a lot of tourneys (in Canada) and set a bunch of course records. He also freely admitted that his putting wasn't good in his early days (no patience for it).
Interesting how hes talking about the updates to his swing here. Narrower stance , more level rather than losing height in the downswing and it definitely looks more of a rotating move through impact than earlier footage. Hes seems so excited about the changes hes made and looking forward to being able to see where the balls are landing ! Obviously had sight issues at this point. Great stuff.

Eagle creek Orlando Florida. Graves golf academy, fantastic lessons for amateur golfers to become very good. I've been there and it turned my game around so I can enjoy it from tee to green.
He is the best golfer ever! There are so many rubbish teachers out there.
The rubbish teachers are the ones trying to make everyone’s swing a carbon copy, weather it’s of Moe’s swing or another. In basically every clinic Moe ever did he talks about every player being unique and needing to “own their swing” or things he did that shouldn’t be taught, like how far he had his clubhead from the ball at address. Of course there are basic dynamics and physics of hitting the ball, but every person is going to have their own, most efficient motion. Good teachers work within each players personal motions to improve impact and swing dynamics. Bad teachers try to change how the swing looks thinking everyone should be identical. Moe knew that wasn’t true and so don’t the best teachers on the planet. ⛳️🧙♂️💭

Did I say I was 74 and still hit from the blues. My Ping G20 still serves my drive at around 260 to 280 yards. Moe Norman single plane style has been most rewarding for me. Much to the shagrin of my partners. :)

Can you recommend a good publication that speaks to his setup, location of the club head vs his head (laterally? ), club head placement relative to the ball for woods and irons, etc? Thank you for your time and for helping to spead this kind of swing. Going to try and get my teenage son to adopt it.

Hi Bob, while Moe claimed it was different there was no indication that it was when comparing before and after video. There are many slow motion shots from this video here on my youtube channel.

I believe that his success was due to having gotten beyond the need for self-analysis. He swung without thinking. Having settled on his method, he never had to think about it anymore.
This video literally contradicts that though... He talks about changing his swing even at 72 years old
@@lawbinson Everyone tweaks things over time. If Moe had departed materially from the swing that made him a legend, we would have to reexamine his SPS legacy. I don't think that will be necessary.
@@lawbinson He didn't change it from single-plane, did he? In that case he tweaked it, he didn't change it. Everyone tweaks his/her swing. I don't see Moe as having been encumbered very much by introspection. That was Adam Bazalgette's assessment as well.
Todd Graves, Jim Kelley, Mark Evershed… they all have said that he always thought about his swing and the changes he made.
Visually there may or may not have always been anything materially different. But, he was definitely not beyond the need for self-analysis.
When it comes time to perform though, he does have an amazing ability to just do. So, “he swing without thinking” I agree with.
Do you know any videos that actually show the balls landing next to the pin besides the one with the wedge that i could watch? I would like to know how close he actually hit it with all his clubs.
+Brad Dubay There were no pins, or greens that he was hitting to here. He did shoot 59 three times, and was close many other times. Also more than 50 Pro wins. Anybody who ever saw Moe including Tiger will tell you that there was no better ball striker EVER!!!

Moe never wore a glove. I also do not wear one. I think the only reasons to wear one is if your hands are sweating a lot, your grips are slick, or you have sore spots on your hands, or they are cold.

I just wondering can this swing use in the PGA tournament? Is this swing is prohibited by any golf association? Because I can't find the pro's using it in any tournament.. Now i'm using this swing and it works greatly.. If this swing can be use in such event, I would like to use it.. Your answer will be very helpful.. It's like all your instruction video very helpful to me.. thanks..
This swing conforms with all rules of golf. Even though it is much easier to learn and perform, and provides more distance and accuracy then any other swing. It is also much easier on the body protecting the back and other parts. You are free to use it in any tournament you would like. Moe Norman won 55 professional tournaments using it.

moe norman wasn't autistic. he suffered a head injury when he was small. that is what is thought to cause his mannerisms.

Moe could hit the ball pure that's for sure, but he wasn't a good judge of distance. I heard him say 310 on one shot and 400 on another then he said he couldn't see the ball. LOL

Moe's achievements speak for themselves, but there are a LOT of contradictions and hype around the myth and it's frustrating for me.
1: This and another one from 70 yards are about the only videos showing some "down the line" shots... Why, when this is supposed to be the "best ball striker" are there not more shots of this and specifically shown aiming at a target... ESPECIALLY for a guy who made his living giving these clinics to demonstrate how much better he was...
2: I have many teaching professional friends - give them a 50 - 70% swing and they will hit 99% of their shots dead straight. Heck, I can hit 10 in a row without thinking 70 yards with a pitching wedge into a landing area of 9m2... (giving perception of dead straight shot and same achievement as his 70 yard video) Of course, every double digit handicapper is amazed, but they all come watching when the pro is doing it at the local club too...
3: He contradicts himself MASSIVELY in this video which most people have not even picked up on... All those years of clinics with his completely different swing with the "master move" - he had the feeling of greatness... the best ballstriker... the only one with it... He is in this video directly criticizing it saying it has problems and now his new swing is the "balls" and he's still "the best ever"...
4: Again, this video as evidence shows that not every ball is dead straight - they are actually going all over the place - pulls / pushes / draw and fade (not massively, but not dead straight!) - even hitting the ball fat a couple of times!!! He is just saying that they are dead straight and perfect and of course, the higher handicappers love it and you can tell from the reaction that they feel like they "have to agree"... Believe me, if you watched a person hitting balls DEAD STRAIGHT to a single target over and over again, the audience would be going INSANE!!!
5: "The elephant in the room" - Moe obviously has a form of autism, I am very familiar with the spectrum, having a few close family members on it. Let's be completely open and honest, we treat them differently. If Joe Blogs was doing this, regardless of their success, people would quickly be - that guy's a proper d-bag... and say it like it is. However, of course when you realise the person is not fully aware of how he fits in socially, of course we are not going to destroy that perception. It obviously brings them pleasure and who are we to tell it different, so we let things slip that we wouldn't be so forgiving for on others!
Don't get me wrong - Moe was an INCREDIBLE golfer! He was accurate, he scored well, he had fun, he won tournaments and did it in his own way! Why can't we celebrate this instead of this never ending quest for the search for deeper meaning of literally nothing or for personal fame or riches (the "one guy" who Moe told his swing too) - except of course, Moe had later completely changed his mind and swing so yeah, what he's teaching, we'll never know...
He is so old here and you want criticize ? Half blind . Just enjoy the beauty that is Moe . As my coach used to say the most learning you will ever do is to just watch and learn .

@@jessehiott672 exactly. Tiger said Ben Hogan and Moe Norman were the only golfers to ever own their swings, and he hoped someday to own his. The “hype” isn’t from high handicap amateurs. The best teachers and pros in the world all said Moe was the best ball striker of all time. If not for his eccentric ways and autism, he’d have went down as one of the all time greats on tour.

Moe was 71 years old in this video and was hitting his drives at least 250 yards. One of the guys watching claimed to measure some of them at over 300 yards with roll. It was very impressive.
DaTimShow i guess if he was downwind, the range was slightly down hill and it was the middle of august a ball could've rolled out to 290. but that it a 240-255 yard swing at best under normal conditions. i've been golfing for 40 years and know what it takes to hit a ball 290 ( something i can't do ), but i've played with guys that can approach 290-300, and they are much younger with a much more aggressive swing, usually some lag in their swing and a lot of club head speed. i don't want to knock what moe was saying because he is a legend, but i am a stickler for facts and accuracy!!
