- If you want to know if an instructor's method can help you, have him (or her) exhibit their swing during a live clinic. And, if he's brave enough, have the students rate the shots.
In this video, I perform a ball striking clinic during a golf school. As I explain the swing, my students rate my shots from 1 to 10.
The Single Plane golf swing is not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing - impact.
Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

I’ve been playing golf for 26 years and this method makes me feel like I found golf all over again - love it
Great to hear.
Todd you seem genuine and confident without all the ego; the kind of guy other guys like to hang out with. That, above being able to pure a golf strike is most commendable in my book. Thanks for the instruction and sharing your memories with Moe.
I appreciate that! Thanks
This just made my week. Todd, this is awesome....it's like you're channeling Moe's spirit. Such fun and yet lots of nuggets of knowledge. AAA+++
thanks.
Todd, I was a huge fan of Moe, and I love that his swing and game live on through your teachings. It makes me so happy, and unfortunately as a disabled veteran happiness is difficult to find sometimes. Thanks for all you do and I'd love to take a lesson from you some day, it would be an honor.
This swing was marketed as "Natural Golf" back when i started playing. Simplifying golf bio-mechanically....Amazing stuff! Not surprised we have some tour players understanding science to progress!
Lol!! Only guy remotely close to this style is Bryson and no one else.
I have not loved playing golf for probably the last ten years. I saw your post on Facebook a few months ago and I've been out golfing more times this year than the last ten years combined. Love all your videos and appreciate all the advice. More Norman was a genius. The single plane swing is amazing.
“Hit it pure wind won’t touch it” Moe Norman
Seen him hit many balls. I live in Kitchener, and had the opportunity. One of the most amazing exhibition of ball striking…. Glad to see you are keeping his legacy alive!!!!
Moe's stories and unique golf swing inspire me to become better at golf. The guys at the school are so lucky they got to see the master at work awesome job Todd.
After watching a lot of your videos, for the last few days (so clearly haven’t had chance to absorb everything yet) I went on the range today to practice. Did nothing you told me but thought I was, and couldn’t hit a shot. Watched this video, and after that everything flew nice and straight. The only way I can describe how it feels for me is ‘don’t move up or down, don’t move side to side’. It feels extremely planted, and whenever I had that feeling it went well. Didn’t miss a shot after this vid as I’ve said. Will try again tomorrow.
Starting golf at 52 has given me a chance to look at different ways of the hitting the ball. Being a sports person all my life, picking up a golf club and hitting it naturally the way I feel a ball should be hit. However after watching every Tom Dick and Harry has made me change my swing to the point where i'm confused. Then watching Moe and then Todd reinforces my original idea of hitting a ball. My "baseball" grip changed about 4 times until I heard Moe say "why wouldn't you hold it like a base ball or tennis grip". That gives you the best "grip" as far as feeling in control with your trailing hand. That's when it dawned on me as it was exactly how I felt in the beginning. So now I'm back to where I started 2 yrs ago but with more belief in what I want to try and do. And the straight stretched arms makes a lot of sense in terms of physics and maths. Centrifugal force is dependent on speed and Radius. Fully extended arms plus club length is the optimal position.
It was great to be at this Q&A last month and it's a great forum for us to watch you hit balls but have a casual conversation about the SPS. I'm posting mainly to give kudos to you and your tech crew for the edits so everyone watching on youtube can enjoy what we got to do in person.
I learned more from this one video than all the others you have made. I also loved the short stories of your time with Moe. Less talk and more results will keep me coming back. Keep up the good work.
Todd, I can watch this all day. Great job!
"Positions create the ability to be effortless" is such a great line
Todd,
Can't thank you enough for introducing The Moe Norman single plane line. I tried it for the first time at the range on Saturday and wow 😲. Like Moe would always said "feeling of greatness". I looked up the Heavens and said " THANK YOU MOE" and you of course, for carrying the simplicity of Moe's swing and not letting it die out! Love it Sir. Thank you!👍
Great video Todd,I love the q & a, also its very helpful watching you hit your irons, I like the visuals…great work,
This video is a 10,Thanks Todd
I am going to love this swing!!! Been playing since 95 and never swung correctly because I couldn’t get my lower body to go first. Now with this swing from what I heard u say was mostly all upper body which I feel is going to be perfect for me!! Can’t wait to try this. Thank you
I bought a new set of clubs from GGA recently. They work great. I'm guessing another 2-3 months of driving range practice before I hit the courses. The Single Plane Swing is Da Bomb Baby!
And...I was going to work another 4 years at my day job, but because of my enthusiasm for this new method, I retired today! I had enough years in already so it didn't hurt to do it. I feel like a kid again using Moe's swing.
Thank you Todd for bringing this to the masses!
Heck, I may even move to OK just so I am closer to the school you guys have. :-)
When u extend ur arms out I noticed that Bryson Dechambeau does the same move. Eliminate all the variables that can throw ur swing off. I've tried this swing and man it's so effortless, and the ball goes where my hands swing to. Wonderful teaching!!!
I love the way you have taken the time and energy to decode Moes genius. Amazing.
These lessons have entirely changed my game after 35 years of struggling.
I’ve gone from low 90’s to low 80’s and even shooting in the 70’s every few times out.
Handicap is now an 11.0 and still dropping.
Thank you Todd. God bless Moe Norman!
P.S. I’d love to see Todd wear a long sleeved plaid shirt and shiny gold cuffed slacks, and saddle shoes for just one of these lessons!
The best of you I’ve seen on your channel. Great shots and great answers to the questions. Your trapping it!
I honestly wanted to give up golf today until I found these videos. This makes so much more sense to me than any other instructionals I’ve seen! I took this on the course today and still fine tuning but hit some great shots! What’s interesting is this is what I was trying to do naturally but I couldn’t conceptualist it (also didn’t think it was correct). Thank you!!!
Great to hear!
I’m just starting my golf journey and I’m 6’7 so I’m glad I seen this method as I was struggling. I like how simple it is.
I started golf with videos from Todd and the SPS, but had a problem squaring the clubface. I don't think I was able to get the rotation needed being so new to golf. So, I changed more and more towards conventional, starting with my trail heel coming up, then to a bowed wrist a-la Morikawa and DJ. I started hitting it straight, but lost yardage and everything started hurting whereas I could hit hundreds of balls (even if they sliced) without any pain with the SPS.
Then I saw a video of Moe Norman at age 72 learning from Manuel De La Torre and improving his swing. He talks about a circular motion, having "no hands" and just swinging his arms. Now, I'm back to the SPS, I learned how to rotate while keeping my trail heel down through impact, and am hitting it better than ever without pain. Played 45 holes this weekend! I still need to build consistency, but it feels so natural when I have it going. Thanks for the content, Todd!
Glad your here with us Todd, sharing “Moes” swing!
This is my favorite video, I watch it at least 3 times a day. Wonderful for me to swing the model. Things not going right with swing go to the model! Thanks
This guy is amazing
Absolutely amazing,..I am now doing this , I’m not perfect but I have great misses when I’m not perfect… thank you , I’m now excited to play again
Thanks for adding the Shot tracer!!
Great stuff. Getting back into golf after about a 30 year layoff. I'm 63 and it was so frustrating. Ran across this and can't wait to "trap" my new swing.
Go for it.
This is absolutely amazing! Almost unbelievable
I have not had a chance to take lessons from him yet. However since I learned of Todds channel last year, I have learned alot an straighter. I have taken my scores from 100-110 average to the 90-100. So about 10 shots lower. I keep getting better with his tips, now if I could learn to putt I could be in the 80s.
I’ve been working on the single plane swing since I started playing golf again. Played about 5 rounds now and used to be a varsity player in high school, 30 now, and wow the accuracy and distance have been great! I still need to work on the system but I’m getting there!
Best demonstration ever and so interesting and informative 👌
Great job Todd! Very interesting.
Loving this format💪 ty Graves team
This video is fantastic! I've been trying the single plane swing since the COVID pandemic started and now I am shooting in the high 80's and low 90's where I was hitting in the 100's for years. I just need to work on my putting game and I hope to shave some more strokes! The extension emphasis in this video is key! Thanks Todd and Tim for all your continued support!
"every putt is a 3 foot putt"
Its funny Todd, cause all the shots i saw u did were 10 to me. i been learning a lot lot just by watching your videos. Thank you !
Wow, that was very impressive, especially driver!
This is brilliant. Thanks for posting Todd (and the editing team at GG)
Absolutely enjoyed that.
Great Q&A session Todd. You mentioned Matthew Lane (3-time All-American) winning the ‘89 NCAA Division One Championship whilst attending the University of Oklahoma. But having to qualify before winning the NZ Open by 3 strokes over Australia’s Rod Pampling, and closing with a course record 64 is undoubtedly, a dream come true for a home-grown ‘Kiwi’ (NZ born) golfer. Sad to hear that failing eyesight ended Matthews tournament career.
Can't wait to take this to the range!!!
Cant wait for the hitting ball above your feet video!😉🏌♂️Talk about leaving a legacy!
You ripped that driver! Man-that was awesome.
Thanks Todd for the information on this video it’s very helpful thank you .
Fantastic ball striking just there..
U r living Moe’s verbiage during illustration Love it. Tim
TODD MOE WOULD BE VERY PROUD OF YOU YOU ARE HITTING THE BALL JUST LIKE MOE , WISH I COULD DO THID , I HAVE TRIED AND VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME
Awesome videos awesome demonstration
Best video you've done by far! 👍🏌️
Thanks.
Great video Todd, you touched on a lot of good stuff. Probably my favorite video of yours and I’ve seen quite a bit of them. From the video it seems like you are aiming right but ball is going straight but to left of your stance and I kind of noticed that with Moe also.
Thanks Rob. Many times we use "conventional" terminology and methods to describe Moe's Single Plane golf swing. When you say "aiming right" you are referring to the front of my arms (shoulders) pointing to the right. (In actuality, my toros is open (aiming left).) "Aiming Right" with the shoulders is a conventional term and has nothing do to with the reality of aiming the club face and lead arm at the target. TO make a long story short, even though the front of my arms points to the right, I'm aligning my body in an ideal way to get the club plane and path to the target. Thanks. for the comment.
"I Trapped my swing"
Love it!
Excellent.
Great tip. Many thanks from korea
Kamsamnida
oh wow, I made a comment about being unsure of your technique.... wish I knew the vid so I could delete it...this vid answers that, great to see this vid of you hitting multiple balls and the trace.
Glad it helped!
Glad God made Moe, and glad god put you there with him to show the world his technique.
I'll copy from the CZcams videos and see if I can do it. I imagine it takes tons of hard work, like Moe said, Can't buy it.
Fascinating to hear your comments about meeting Moe, etc. Moe was asked where he got his swing and he is on video mentioning Manuel de la Torre and his father Angel, and others like Paul Bertholy who emphasized 'total fitness' and practice swinging with a lead pipe. Moe also said he used heavy clubs after he heard a carpenter tell him he used a heavy hammer to sink nails with a single strike, etc....I think the Single Plane also has some parallels with the hockey swing, which is quite ironic since his dad totally rejected Moe for not prioritizing hockey over golf...Moe said people should not be taught to swing like him, because I don't think he wanted to be compromised, since Hogan was already gone. BUT, as Anthony Hopkins said in the movie, The Edge,"...What one man can do, another man can do." Then, AH went and killed the bear, just like 11-year old boys used to do in Africa when they killed a lion to prove they were a man. So, if it wasn't you, it would have been someone else to bring the Single Plane Swing to life for the masses. Hope to get to your schools, next year, 74 and doing chemo for liver cancer, at present.
T was really channeling Moe…you can hear it in his voice on a few comments.
Awesome video and swing Todd.
I assume you foot alignment is closed because of the geometry/angle of attack/path.
Is your 3 wood off the deck and 4 iron about same - perhaps feet at target (not parallel left)? (Like Hogan's) and then even more right for driver?
And other irons follow Hogan's model getting to square then open on high irons?
Cheers
Always 9 10 great video long live moe forever...
Thank you for the value lessons .. !!!
My pleasure!
5 to 10 on your hits all were perfectly hit on line straight. I would love to hit a 5 as you did.
Terrific video, Todd! Loved the very end... "I'll show you how to make it look like there is effort. Simple... put your body out of position." Great answer to an important question...and a lesson for all of us on the Single Plane Swing journey! Thanks!
I am convinced. I am going to try this. Hope it does not take me a year. 😅
i used to play reaching like this and switched towards hands hanging. I played so much better with a "reach" keeping me on plane. I naturally have a steep swing path bc/ i play tennis and get the racket up with a pretty big right arm/body separation on the backswing(in golf and tennis), but it does drop in during attack. My other issue is "cupping" the wrist and im working on "bowing" them.
Awesome video!!
Thanks!
Just recently started single plane swing and when I hit all the positions in the swing , what a joy it is . Absolutely straight as an arrow !!! My question is that I’m 69 and I wit my PW 100-105 . My perception because I don’t have any tools to measure, is that the height is 100 plus. Tried moving ball back in stance to deloft with very little change . Any comment ??
Moe was the only golfer that never made a bad swing
ill bet my life that he hit thousands to get to the point where his ball striking got to where it was.
I think I have the answer as to how Moe hit off the bottle. For bottle shots Moe clearly changed his angle of attack so as to pinch the ball off the bottle as one pinches the ball off the turf in iron play. We pinch woods off the turf as well but it's the mass of the wood that takes the ball off. Irons need loft, descending blow, and pinch allows ball to ride up the face.
Todd I am trying the one plane swing. Can you hit a draw with it? What ball flight should I expect ? Straight, Slight fade?
Hi Todd,
Thank you for your dedication to Moe and continuing his legacy. I especially am grateful for your video on the last time you played with him.
It’d be great to learn about everything Moe, not connected to golf as well. I hope his movie gets made,
Also,
Based on your recommendation, what’s a good set of clubs to get for a beginner? Do you recommend getting fitted with clubs that are all the same length?
Yes. We are finishing the movie this year. As far as clubs, Callaway golf makes clubs for all levels of golfers. the most important thing is that they are fitted to you. If you want me to help you get the proper fitting, email me at toddg@gravesgolf.com and I can help you get the right set, fitting and set makeup.
Until a better method is discovered to accurately hit the ball straight, I'll stick with the single plane approach. I've been using the single plane off and on for almost 2 years, getting into the single plane address position is almost second nature at this point. I know the ball will go straight almost every time, slices and hooks are extremely rare! I can't tell you'all how many times straight and short got me a score in the mid 80s and beat everyone in my group, even the long hitters! I'd get on the short par 4s and 3s in regulation, 2 putt for par. On the mid to long par 4s, I'd get on in 3 and usually walk off with a bogey or occasionally roll one in for a par.
Todd I never saw that a practice swing he just hit it. Lol😂
What I am anxious to see is what happens when a young golfer starts this way from the beginning....
@toddgravesgolf - When is the last time you topped sliced or hooked a shot? Serious question
One of the guys asking questions sounds like Jim the Cameraman from the old Sevam1 videos.
I don't know how this audio is recorded, but it sounds way different in the vids of Moe I've watched and listened to. Would you say that have the feeling of greatness or no?
This is great! I haven't played in over 20yrs. I know I want to learn SPS, I tried using this swing and I played today and it was miserable, hitting fat, thin, just not consistent. Every so often I would hit great shots. The ALIGNMENT is driving me crazy! Is there a video that shows this? Do you come in to set up already gripping the club? Right hand? Left hand? Come in already tilting? I would appreciate any advice.
Did you race your car on the highway before learning to drive? Why did you play before learning the fundamentals of the single plane swing? I have instruction online. Schools. Online coaching. Take your pick.
Whats the best way to grip the club with this style of swing?
Overlap.
Great coaching session thanks Todd. I’ve been comparing your swing with Moes and I notice that you flex your knees prior to starting the backswing and they are noticeably more flexed than Moe. Is there a reason for this and what should we be doing?
Todd, thanks for the video. I changed to SPS. Because of this video I "basically" got it with two small buckets. How far do you hit driver?
Usually about 280 or so. Depends on how much I'm playing. Last year I was getting it out there a bit farther but haven't played much this year.
I would say its more important rather than how far; How straight you hit that driver? Great work and thanks for all videos Todd
Every shot you hit looks completely straight. Mine using this method always have a slight draw. Is that okay or should I try to correct it?
Would love to see more of these ball striking clinics in the future.
Be nice to know the distance you’re hitting each .
Mo hitting driver and that tee staying in the ground.....that's the coke bottle trick
Todd. Can you clarify something that’s got me in a quandary. With my driver I stand about 37 inches from the ball with about 40 degrees front bend. My ‘rod’ is good but my trail arm is also rod straight, putting the line of the club through the top of my back. Side bend obviously negates this a little but it appears that you have the line of the club going through the elbow (trail arm) and therefore the middle of your back but not up through the shoulder. So essentially is the trail arm slightly bent? Hope this makes sense. 👍🏻🏌️♂️
Do you have a club head trace of the single plane swing facing the golfer and also behind?
Your just like Moe.Clubs are everywhere.😂😂
Wow! Great Lesson! Thank you 🙏🏼
Todd, more great info! In watching Moe videos, his driver ball position is often well outside his lead foot. Can you comment on why? And how that relates to the ball position on your ball/foot position trainer? Thanks.
Mostly camera angles were off. Moe's ball position was inside the lead foot - when the camera was directly in front of him. You have to be careful to understand camera angle as most people who took video of Moe didn't take the video for analysis.
@@ToddGravesGolf Thanks for clarifying. Makes sense. Been struggling with that ball placement observation for the better part of a year.
I really like these ideas and don't doubt they work. But is anyone on any major tour swinging this way and winning? If so, who? If not, why?
Every good player "Planes" the club. This is just the easiest way to plane it and it tends to help aging golfers who are struggling with the complicated body movements of the younger, more agile, players who have more complicated movements. One player that uses this swing is Steve Stricker. Very simple.
Match the model is the only way you can play like Todd!!
17:53 Are you hitting driver from the outside? Are we seeing fade? How far are you hitting your drives?
No. No fade. Dead Straight.
Todd is actually starting to sound like Moe !!!
Is there any particular reason Moe played righty even though he was left handed? Was he just not able to obtain left handed clubs as a kid so he had no choice?
A lot of teachers preach 90% power. When you want to jack one longer what do you do ?
