"DMT in music form" - that's Floyd, for sure! Clare Torrey, who sang this, was invited in as a session singer and told to listen to the music, feel it, and sing (sounds, not words) over it. She did it in two takes and the second one was used for the album track. The most perfect album ever recorded - every track a gem and every track a brick in the wall of sound that the album is. In the Billboard 200 for 917 weeks, easily longer than any other album. 15 Platinum discs! I saw Floyd do this live in 1975 and again in 1989. Nice choice and perfect reaction.

She did not do it in "two takes". It was the result of a long recording session where she did what she did. The end product is what producer Alan Parsons pieced together. It was not performed as you hear it in other words.

@@paulmahon1613 Thats mostly correct. She tried several different types of vocals for the track before she did the "Two takes". She wasnt sure how to approach the song and they didnt want to direct her. She finally settled on how she wanted to do it and after the 2nd take she said that a 3rd take wouldnt add anything. Thats when Parsons edited the two takes and achieved the final cut.

It has been on the top 200 for 950 weeks total (over 700 weeks consecutive.... I think) . It's sold over 45 million copies. It has been on the billboard 200 and pop catalogue charts as of 2006 for 1716 weeks. By now August of 2020 it has probably exceeded 2000 weeks. And again from all of us: Thank you so much, guys, for experiencing stuff you like together, showing each other new music and developing your taste.
Also you should do the whole album on one sitting and put it on Patreon (I am not a patron, but I still think it is the better idea). I don't think you should listen to it broken up and out of order. The whole album is an experience. You could also break it up in editing and make it a whole project, which would be fitting for such an artist.

I think this song is especially noteworthy because this was neither Roger, nor David's song. It was Richard's song with an outsider doing the vocals. Despite this, the song is incredibly iconic and indicative of everything we know and love about Pink Floyd. Its also interesting to note that Clare herself was ultimately dissatisfied with her performance and was convinced that she would never hear from the band again. 6 months later she found out that the album was #1 in the US which was a monumental feat for a European band.

You guys should read the story about the original singer Clare Torry, (plus, it is shocking to see her because there is another live version done later with just her because she looks like an English home maker), but she ended up suing them for credit as a co-writer because they told her the song is about death, and she started to sing something on first take and they were like, "no we don't want that", so she got the idea to use her voice like an instrument and this was her second take. She left there not knowing anything and getting paid for x amount of hours of her time, the going rate. Then when she heard the album and realized they used her entire part and that pretty much made her a co-writer she took them to court and won. However, she was on stage with them at a later date doing this song, so I guess bygones were bygones at that point!

The Wizard of Oz starts out in black & white, and transitions to color after the opening sequence. It's generally thought of as the first major motion picture to be filmed and distributed in color (though it isn't) because it's the first color movie most Americans were exposed to

The song is about death. The stages of dying or stages of grieving. One of them described Clare Torry as a housewifely white woman, lol. It's often said she did it in one take, but here is what David Gilmore said: We gave her some dynamic hints: "Maybe you'd like to do this piece quietly, and this piece louder." She did maybe half a dozen takes, and then afterwards we compiled the final performance out of all the bits. It wasn't done in one single take.

    Astronomy Domine (8:29)
Careful With That Axe, Eugene (8:50)
Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun (9:12)
    A Saucerful of Secrets (12:48)

There are three live versions under the Floyd name. Clare Torrey did a live version as part of Floyd's segment of the Knebworth concert in 1990. Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom and Margret Taylor did the live version on Delicate Sound of Thunder (1987). Samantha Brown, Durga McBroo and Claudia Fontaine performed it in 1994 on the P*U*L*S*E album.

Hollywood, love your comments about Pink Floyd. I could not agree more. Comparing Tool to them is very fair. They both could be considered Prog Rock bands. Floyd is one of my all time favorites! Great breakdown on their impact. I hold them far above the others you mentioned. I would put them over The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and such, but I also think they are in a different sub-genre. Comparing to The Wizard of Oz, have you ever watched Dark Side of the Rainbow where they sync the music to The Wizard of Oz?
Dark Side of the Moon holds the records of most charted weeks of being on Billboard's Top 200 albums with 950+,736 consecutively from its release in 1973 to 1988. The album second on that list with Legend by Bob Marley with 625.

OK, .. on the album it is one gal Claire Torry , she was asked to come in and improvise and she would try to add words and Roger would say , NO, no words ... and she didn't know what to do .... then she decided to imagine herself as an instrument ..... NOW LIVE the band would always have 3 separate gals do the song .... NOW the two gals that Roger Waters had brought me to tears ... up to that point ... over 100 concerts .. I had never cried at a concert ... the two blonde gals are actually their own group called LUCIOUS ... look up Roger Waters live staples center great gig in the sky , on youtube ... that is where I cried
