  • *For best viewing of the software, please view this video in HD* This is a short video tutorial for the use of JRMI with a Digitrax Super Chief DCC system. It shows how to connect a computer to a Digitrax PR3 and some basic operations. This video also demonstrates how to use the WiThrottle application on your smartphone/tablet. This is only basic JMRI use for beginners, I do not get into advanced uses in this video. Please add any questions in the comments and I will do my best to answer them.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together. I saw your post in the Yahoo group.
The JMRI suite encompasses so much that it's hard to show what's important, and easy to become overwhelming. I enjoyed seeing how you connected (already know how), and understood everything you demonstrated in the video. However, for a newbie, rather than "you can...", it might be better to be specific with what you did, and why. For example, "When I got my loco, I wanted to change the address, so I did this ..."
By the way, like you, I had problems with my short horn being a toggle on my throttle until someone in the Yahoo JMRI group (despite the darn "NEO" "updates") told me I could change it in my roster entry to momentary.
Engine Driver is the (awesome and free) Android app for "controlling" JMRI, and a new app called "DigiTrains" is also available.
The JMRI "Panel Pro" is what I started with, and drew my layout on the screen. The JMRI webserver provides access to designated webpages, including my layout plan, and I can see and control turnouts on that graphical interface as well.
Again, thanks for sharing this and have fun exploring JMRI.

Very informative. Thank you for doing this. My layout is N Scale, but I have the same Super Chief DCC set. I want to do JMRI, but I want to do it "here and there" automation when I just want to sit and "rail fan". Basically when friends come over. Then I can play conductor when on my own. Really considering making the jump to JMRI and buying the extra stuff needed to automate. Thank you again for the demonstration.

If you ever do this again you need to point to it because I never saw it move also PLEASE do CC ( Close Captioning ) I am hearing but I have a lot of friends that are deaf or hard of hearing and would like to get into this hobby, who knows what I might happen with my life or anyone. Thank you.

Thanks for the video. When you placed your loco on the programming track did you change your DPDT switch under the layout or was it still set to PR3 to do the programming instead of the DCS100?

I just got my PR3 up and running for the first time last night and I used DecoderPro3 for everything you showed needing to download and use DecoderPro for. Is there some advantage to using regular Pro over Pro3 that I'm not seeing? Totally new to this. Thanks.

Hi Brent. I use DecoderPro 3 for operations (e.g. controlling the track power, using the WiThrottle Server, and running the turnouts, etc.). I use DecoderPro in service mode to read the decoder and change the CV values. I will tell you that I am running an older version of JMRI and I know they released a newer version since I installed mine. Some functionality might be changed between the different versions. I found that their online user manual is useful. I hope this helps!

I am completely new to this DCC and JMRI.
To get started with JMRI what do I need from DIgitrax? I have an Iphone6

      Hi Robert -
Minimally, here is what you will need.
      1) A Digitrax DCC system (I have the Super Chief)
      2) Loconet cable (I have another video on how to make one if you want to save money)
      3) A computer (Mac or PC) that has a USB connection
      4) JMRI downloaded (this is a free download), be sure to download the instructions and read through them
      5) A Dixitrax PR3 (the power supply is not included, but a USB cable is included to hook to your computer)
      6) A programming track or an isolated yard that is connected to your PR3
      7) (optional), if you want to run trains from your phone, you need the "WiThrottle" application, the demo version is free, the full version costs money. I use the free version
The instructions that come with your Digitrax system and PR3 will help you with the connections. My video should help you with the operations of the JMRI. I have other videos that show how to program decoders using JMRI and the PR3. Hope this helps!

Im not seeing a video on how to Add the new locomotive. This is where Im stuck at for the moment. There are so many options when I enter.
From there Im not sure how to get everything going.
I saw what you can do once its programmed, but nothing to do about how to program it period.
