Yes, I was going to say this too. RM’s persona is bigger then him and so it looks down at him. I think this is especially true in the line they aren’t interested in my clumsiness. People just see him as the leader and are not interested in the order parts of him. Suga’s shadow gets bigger the higher he rises and threatens to consume him. Hobi is on even ground with himself. I read somewhere that one way to think of Jung’s map of the soul is to think of a house. Persona is like the outside (curb appeal) and is what people see as they drive by or what you present to the world. Ego is the person inside the house being who they are, maybe happy, sad, neat, or disorganized. Shadow is the stuff you try to hide in the basement that you don’t want people to see but you own it and it’s part of the house too. Fun reaction.

Also, the Persona MV takes after the style of their Feb 2, 2014 comeback trailer. And the « big house, big car, big ring » is Suga referencing his lyrics from No More Dream. His dream as he says it and repeats it as he runs, I see it like a representation of his journey of the previous 7 years.
This whole album is a reflection back on who they were, where they started from, their past dreams and their journey, as 7 individuals and as a group, up to their 7th year. It’s been aptly named Map of the Soul 7. I’ve seen that even other songs on this album reference back on previous lyrics. It is such an amazing album, a work of art.

All three members are a wonderful Personification of each aspect of the self.
RM's "Persona" is the cool, genius leader, but he's also a goofy, clumsy nerd who loves trees, books and riding his bike. But in the end, he's all of those things. And they all combine to make the Namjoon/RM we all know & love.
Yoongi is the shadow. He wants to be famous & wealthy, but at what price? Everyone wants a piece of him & the higher he climbs, the farther the fall. But he accepts the shadow, because its part of him too.
And dear J-hope is the embodyment of "Ego." In the best sense. He trusts himself. He has decided to go his way, running into a maze without hesitating, knowing he will find his way. I love the flashing when he's dancing, black, white & sparkily fireworks, representing his persona & shadow that come together in his ego!

  • @Ahjusshi_Brown
    @Ahjusshi_Brown Před 2 lety +26

Ok guys so I also interpreted shadow differently too 😂😂. So the intro, the “I wanna be…” mantra. I see that section as pre-debut Yoongi saying his goals and desires for his life. He says he’s got a big dream and then from that point on he discusses why now that he’s achieved his dream, it’s nothing that he expected. It’s lonely and scary, and in that isolated position his shadow now begins to attack him.
From there the Yoongi of today begs us not to let him reach the heights he now possess bc he’s afraid of falling. The bigger he and BTS becomes, the brighter the spotlight on him becomes, and the more the spotlight is on him the more his shadow (the parts of him he wants to hide) grows.
Then he repeats the “I wanna be…” mantra to remind himself of his past ambitions (why he became an idol in the first place), but then the shadow takes over and says that same mantra from a place of greed and chaos. From that point on everything said is from the point of view of the shadow.
Now the shadow is directly talking to Yoongi and tells him that he can’t keep fighting and suppressing his shadow forever. That he’ll have an easier time in life if he can come to accept that he and his shadow are one in the same (which is literally Jung’s theory on Individuation).
*Note:* there’s also another verse to this song that isn’t included in the video. I think that part is also the shadow talking or Yoongi talking to himself.

In regards to Ego, it's very typical of Hobi's music that a sunny, bouncy beat comes with serious lyrics. (I think he finds the concept of upsetting people uncomfortable and unpleasant. Yet...it's important for him to vent the feelings that he does/tries to in his music. Which I think is part of the reason they come through without even the intention for that.) So always look for deep-thinking and introspective when you hear a happy beat from Hobi. Those things are usually there.

I totally agree with you about Ego. I think Ego is about exactly what the Ego is: the balancing of your personas, your shadow, other parts of the self that BTS doesn’t touch on, to create the one true YOU.
I think the lyrics of ego wonderfully do this by talking about J-hope (persona), the struggles he’s had/his life being full of regret and asking himself why he’s even alive (his shadow) and Jung Hoseok (who he is behind it all). He says the journey was painful (as it often is when one is on a journey to truly understand themselves) but that it was worth it, and that the entire journey was simply mapping out how to get to his soul (the true essence of who he is).
There’s also a bunch of Easter egg elements that hint at persona and shadow throughout the MV (as well as various references to BTS and ARMY) 😂💜

I love how you guys were wowed by it! The Rapline solos of MOTS7 is just superior! I personally love Shadow the most, but all three represented the 3 states so well and keeping in mind that the boys wrote it themselves, it is honestly a great trio. RM i “Intro: Skool Luv Affair" from their Skool Luv Affair album (their third mini). SUGA in Shadow sampled “Intro: O!RUL8,2?” from their (you guessed it Andrew) O!RUL82? album (their 2nd mini). J-Hope in EGO sampled “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool” from their 2 Cool 4 Skool album (their first album ever).

All of these songs were sampled fr their older songs. The O!RUL8,2? sign in shadow refers to that intro song and album, because the melody was taken from that song. The background to persona was taken from Intro: Skool Luv Affair. Just for examples so you were on point abott it the samples.
At the end of shadow when the time changed completely, the is because the shadow is now talking to Suga. Through the whole song, Suga is basically saying “I want to do all these things, but the shadow is constantly there like a reminder that he exists. So he tells us ‘don’t let me shine, don’t let me fly’ so the shadow can’t affect me” but the shadow at the end says “you can’t get rid of me. I am you and you are me. Nothing will ever change that.”

    - They did a great job in choosing which rapper did which song. They have very different styles and this trilogy fit into those perfectly imo.
    - The songs on the MOTS:7 album are placed very strategically to emphasize the concept, for example Dionysus, which you already know the meaning of, is right next to Shadow. It's a brilliant album that deserves so much more recognition than it got.

With regards to BE it was released in the middle of the pandemic and is about them and their thoughts during the pandemic. It's such a unique disruption that BE, much like Butter/PTD, isn't connected to their other work but rather to the pandemic.

Wow, these songs hit differently after I learned about their struggles in the couple of years prior to this album.
In 2017 they received their first BBMA and later that year they made their US television debut at the AMAs. They struggled with that exponential rise in fame and pressure and spotlight, so much so that they considered disbanding. They had to re-discover the reasons why they were doing this and this took some months, from late 2017 to early 2018. (I've been following the docu-series "The Rise of Bangtan" and the latest episode (Ch. 19) covers this period of time.)
I'm glad that "Map of the Soul: 7", and "Ego" particularly, shows that they've made peace with the situation that fate has brought them to. Also, in a recent interview with GQ Australia, Suga said that 2018 was a turning point in his life, where he began to gain happiness. And in their livestream after the 2021 AMAs, Suga said he cried before the 2017 AMAs because he was so scared of the pressure this rising fame would bring, but in the 2021 AMAs, he was able to enjoy it.

I actually interpreted Persona differently. To me RM is grappling with who he is. At the very beginning of the song he asks who is he, and from then on he talks about all aspects of being RM of BTS.
He talks abt his fears, his shadow, the benefits of being RM, and so on. As a result I see this song as someone who is now identifying solely with their persona (in this case his persona is RM as opposed to identifying as Kim Namjoon). He comments abt his shadow but considering that the shadow is actually the parts of ourselves that we don’t let others see, he does exactly that and tucks it away behind the persona of RM.
So no, I don’t think he ever identifies with his shadow in that song bc he says he labeled it “hesitation” and since then he’s never hesitated again (as in he’s never let it come to the forefront of himself ever again). Quite literally they don’t talk to the shadow until Yoongi does in “shadow” (imo) 😂😂
Also I don’t think that giant RM was his shadow but was actually his RM persona: a larger than life idol

So an interesting point I haven’t seen anyone else bring up: the lyrics at the beginning of Ego where Jhope asks “Why did it call to me” I’ve also seen translated as (and I believe the official mv uses this translation) “why did /they/ call me”. It’s a reference to the time pre-debut when Jhope actually quit bts. The other members all believed they couldn’t debut and be successful without him, and they called him back. A lot of the song talks about what might have been if he was just Jung Hoseok and not Jhope of BTS, and about the choices/fate that brought him to this reality

Ego lyrically and as a concept changed my life. I have a giant painting homage to it on my office wall and I got a tattoo of it on my arm too. This whole concept of acknowledging and embracing your role as the leader of your own life and recognizing that that means coming to terms with the path you've tread while also trusting yourself to forge ahead with all that you've learned toward things better and brighter--yeah, it really pulled me out of my post-law school depression. And the imagery did such a great job reinforcing that message--the self-deification especially resonated with me (fun fact--self-deification--or the claim to be one's own god--is also called "egotheism"). Add to that the celebratory Carnival feeling of the production with the brass and the catchiest outro in music history, it was truly just a whole masterpiece. And another cool thing about it is that it is SO j-hope. Imagine someone trying to cover Ego and doing it any justice. Unfathomable.

The song they were sampling, I believe was from their Skool Luv Affair comeback trailer I think. The animate RM is his persona, and then the other dancing people are many versions of himself. His shadow is hesitation.

The beginning of this song has an intro sample of their 2 Cool 4 Skool album - their debut or "beginnings". And J Hope did a lot of self reflecting and going back to his beginnings. I love this song.

Aw, three bunnies 🐇🐇🐇 for the three rappers about to go off 🥰
Also, at this point I am specifically looking forward to finding out which cute Bangtannies NomNomming clip you have found this time 😂
The moment Caitlin said "it has such a throwback vibe" I started screaming internally 😆
because not only is it throwback in the style of the music and video, but it's also using a sample from one of their earliest albums.
Okay Caitlin, I am officially a fan of your segue from Persona into Shadow 🤩
Andrew, I find it really incredible how you not only picked up on the sampling, but also on the O!RUL8,2? flash!!! 😲 Because that definitely went by really quickly, and it took me watching it several times to notice, while also knowing that there should be such a connection in there, when it came out originally.
And then also for all three song reactions, I am in awe of how succintly Caitlin managed to not only explain the concepts, but also then pick up on the lyrics and tie it all together neatly. 👏👏👏
Finally, thank you for daring to tackle all three songs in one go! I know this must have been quite a big project to deal with, with the background research, filming, and then the reaction editing (which is really cool and helpful when you explain musical stuff, because you give us either an auditory or visual example always).
Just to tack this on: i think having heard Shadow a lot of times, when I inevitably tried to recreate that rhythm there myself I automatically started using (my gybberish imitation of) the lyrics, and it felt easier with them than without. And that reminded me of one thing my piano teacher once told me: in a good song, the melody/rhythm feels natural with the language of the lyrics (aka you don't have musical accents in places where the language naturally would not have them). Granted, sometimes also a particular effect is achieved by going exactly against this rule-of-thumb, just like you also pointed out with Per-so-ná. Anyway... I'll stop rambling on here... but this is what you do with me, you make me think further about song-writing, and music theory, and how everything connects to the concepts 😁
Thank you both for this entertaining reaction! 💜

Caitlin definitely did an excellent job with the summaries and I really think that doing that research ahead of time helped us enjoy the experience more.
Yeah, while I was editing I kept on trying to figure it out so I could put it on screen, but I think it falls slightly off the beat (to feel more natural) and it was really hard to recreate correctly in a way that wasn't just nested tuplets.... I think my best approximation is a quarter note triplet, but the first two quarter notes are actually a sixteenth followed by a dotted eighth. And then one time he turns the last quarter into an eighth note triplet as well... Anyway, that's the best I could get it to match technically, but like you said, sometimes it just needs to be based on the lyrics and normal speech patterns

For RM, it’s the struggle to grow and accept facets of himself that he might not be comfortable showing people. For Suga, it’s the idea that the person he shows fans is still tied to his personal identity , even if they feel so separated. And for J-Hope, it definitely seemed satirical for me, showing how fame can take over and puts you in such a position of power that nothing else matter to you but your own opinions.

It’s like I can almost see your brains whirring while you watch them in the best possible way 😅 I just have to say that your takes on the meanings and stories in their songs are always insane and I love your discussions back and forth!
I honestly don’t think I have ever enjoyed music as much as I do with BTS, and that says a lot. I think it’s because they put so so much effort and thought into everything they do. They are artists in the truest sense of the word and just keep getting better over time.
Pleaaaase selfish video request here - having seen some more solo rap songs now, you two absolutely have to see Outro: Tear at some point in your journey!! The lyrics themselves are heart wrenching but then they add in a little play on words just to top it off and it’s awesome. This performance (czcams.com/video/UDuaJGYe8EQ/video.html) has the lyrics on screen, is hands down the best performance and it has nothing to do with Hobi in the dior harness…..
It’s definitely worth reading a little on the background to the song before listening or watching to give context for the sheer emotion you’ll experience haha. This genius article covers it pretty well - genius.com/amp/a/what-is-the-meaning-of-bts-outro-tear
Thank you for another good un! Perfect way to start my weekend 😄

Hello!! It has been a while since your last essay 😂 Outro: Tear is definitely on the list and has been highly requested! I almostttt chose to listen to that instead of these 3 songs, but in the end the concept of these songs tilted the scale. Thank you so much for the links too, that will definitely help to save some time! 😀

@@AndrewBergSax I know, it’s been far too long to not have inflicted one on you but I just couldn’t help myself 🤣 life has been a bit wild the past couple of months and by the time I’ve got to your videos sometimes it’s been a couple of weeks later but I’ve been lurking around!
No, it was so good to see your reaction to these as a trio and letting them all have their moment to shine individually before then watching them together as a unit. Almost avengers-style them against the world feeling with rap line when they’re going off sometimes hahah. Happy to have helped and always more than happy to in the future should it be useful ☺️ …. definitely haven’t spent far too much time in BTS land in the past two years 🤦‍♀️

Came down to the comments to answer the sampling question but see its already been answered x') so instead I'll just say as older ARMY (found them in 2014 with Danger) you have no idea just how exciting it was to hear all these songs the first time knowing they were sampling their older stuff, I definitely paused and had mini freak outs the first times lol
Edit : Where I've paused you haven't asked (yet?) I dunno if you will after unpausing, but that banner from the building has Joonie (RM)s name on it 김 남준 Kim Namjoon 💜
Edit 2 : Well done for spotting the O!RUL8,2? !
Edit 3 : That ready set begin part Caitlin was talking about is actually a sample of a sample lol it was already a sample in their Intro : 2 Cool 4 Skool (which is what Ego samples) as the "We're now going to progress to some steps, Which are a bit more difficult, Ready, set, and begin" were from an old instructional disco freestyle tape. x')

A cool thing with how RM accents the word “per-so-NA” like you pointed out that is that “na” is the word for “me.” Knowing RM, I think it’s intentional word play.
In the album before this came out the title track was “Idol.” In that song there were lines about having several different people inside but that they all make up “me.” I think the all the faceless figures in RM’s video are all just the different personas of himself. Which is only easy to pick up on if you had heard and seen “Idol.” We all have so many different personas and “me’s” sometimes we can feel lost or fake. Maybe knowing and loving yourself will never get rid of all these personas, but RM says that’s okay because maybe they all have to be added up to equal “me.”

I really enjoy your reactions and I’m on your discord too. I’d like to recommend a song called “Paradise.” It has lots of changes in the beat and tempo that I think will surprise you. It might only be a lyric video, not sure if there’s a live performance or MV. It’s not a love song, which the title might suggest.

As a student of languages, it's always interesting to me how BTS uses English in their music, because of course it is influenced by their native Korean, so they end up with a kind of fusion of the two languages, which brings about different and creative effects. For example, Korean does not have stresses on certain syllables for pronunciation the way English does. It basically stresses each syllable equally. So when BTS puts English words into their songs, they will often stress (or not stress) the syllables differently than an English speaker would. Hence, RM pronouncing Persona "per-so-NAH", which fits with the music and the rhyme he's using.

Hi, I am back. Great reaction, ty. This was fun. Your so cute together. Just noticed RM mentioning map of the soul which is part of the BU story line. Everything is connected, sweet! Yep, I got old school vibes 90's from Persona too. =0p Suga's Shadow is deep, and intense too. It makes many uncomfortable. But if u pay attention and listen u see a hint of a light of hope at the end. =0p Also, the « big house, big car, big ring » is Suga referencing his lyrics from No More Dream. And than we got Ego. Jhope is a dancer 1st and foremost. He also is a sub vocal in the group. So it makes sense for him not to rap. He is himself and that is what he is giving us. =0] So glad u enjoyed all 3 songs! Hugs. Love u. Stay safe. --NY USA Army💟

🏆 Congratulations on an amazing first sponsored video!! Your hard work preparing, recording & editing is evident!
🚀 Space Jam YES. 😆 You two opened my eyes to the use of animation in all 3 videos! Wow!
🧠 Both of your brains were on-point providing interesting comments & reflections.
🎭 Persona - the part where RM accepts himself and says he is no longer embarrassed, the music changes but I don't know how to explain it. It sounds more confident. Was that the use of accents in the instrumental section?
👑 It was really fun to watch Andrew watching Shadow. (Me watching Yoongi-biased musicians who are watching Yoongi do his thing, is my new favorite hobby.) SUGA makes beautiful music.
P.S. your Skillshare plug was one of the most authentic sponsor spots ever. 🌟
🚘 Ego really confused me the first time I saw & heard it. I didn't know what to make of the music OR the lyrics. But the second time, I cried and wanted to dance for joy. j-hope's music composition style really is unique.
