The song is about loosing a friend. The music video pays homage to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. It’s never been openly confirmed but Jin kind of confirmed it in an interview. Politically they couldn’t come right out and say so because the president at the time black listed and even jailed people that criticized the incident. There is a deeper explanation video by Italian army if you’re interested. Warning though it has actual footage and is hard to watch. Bts donated to the survivors families. Secretly. I was in Korea on holidays when the ferry tragedy happened. The way it was “reported” and how the whole rescue was handled was horrific. I can’t imagine the pain those parents went through seeing that nothing was being done to rescue their children. I was there again a couple of years later and I vividly remember standing on the side of a road in Seoul in the rain watching the parents and friends of those lost children, marching and seeking justice from the government. It broke my heart and I admit I cried like a baby. There was nothing I could do but offer my support. That memory has stayed with me to this day. Seeing their faces as they walked in the pouring rain holding pictures of their lost children - you have no idea what that was like. This song though not officially about the tragedy, has been linked to it since the beginning. It’s a beautiful song and the way it was written has left it open to individual interpretation- it means different things for different people. They are masters of their craft!

I promise you, you are not the only person to cry watching this for the first time. You are not the first grown man to shed tears because of Spring Day. Heck, you're not even the first metalhead to do so.
Spring Day touches that very real, very raw, core of our humanity. The one that knows loss, and the pain of missing a loved one - or even just a time in our past when we felt safe and secure. It touches the part of us that recognizes that pain in others; that loss is a universal emotion (and not just an exclusively human one).
Spring Day touches that pain, and reminds us of our humanity. And nothing could be more beautiful.
I have to admit, the thing I find hardest now, is watching others struggle while watching this. I just want to reach out and hug you.🫂 Sorry, but just know you are not alone, and we are all here for you.
Many BTS songs will hit you in ways you don't expect. And we all have songs that hit us harder than others (for me that is Suga's Interlude: Shadow - I can not watch it without being in tears; though Louder Than Bombs hits hard too). So this may well not be the last time BTS reduce you to tears.
    Hugs🫂 Borahae💜

The Sewol sinking happened in 2015. I was a high school teacher in California when this happened. My students were the same age as the students on the field trip. I followed this story. (I did not discover BTS until 2020). "Spring Day" came out in February 2017, in the midst of protests and government crackdowns, including the impeachment proceedings against the president of Korea. Artist, actors, public figures, etcetera who spoke out for the victims' families and the survivors were attacked in the media, reputations smirched, lost their jobs, some wound up in jail. It was illegal to speak against the government. After the impeachment of President Park and during her trial, her orders to ruin the lives of those who publicly supported the families were confirmed.

In a 2020 Esquire interview BTS were asked if Spring Day was about a specific event. Jin said, "It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing." Many take that, along with BTS's 2017 donation to the 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and a Safer Society, as confirmation that the song is at least partially about the tragedy. The donation was made in the same year as the song and in the same year that there were massive protests to remove Park Geunhye, the former South Korean president, for corruption and the cover up of the Sewol ferry tragedy.
The explained video you watched isn't the best in my opinion. I much prefer the one by Italian Army that makes much more concrete connections between the MV and the tragedy and the movement that followed. I think this video missed the main point behind Spring Day's references to Snowpiercer and Omelas too:
The reason for the revolution in Snowpiercer is because the children of the lower class keep disappearing, and they find out at the end of the movie that it was because the upper class were stealing them to get them to do the extremely dangerous work in the small spaces around the train's engine. The train literally needs the labour and suffering of the underprivileged children to run, for the rich to keep enjoying their safety and luxuries.
It's the same thing in Omelas. The reason Omelas is prosperous and the people are happy is because of one small child mistreated and tortured out of sight.
They're poignant references because the victims of the Sewol ferry tragedy were primarily school age children who were sacrificed for the corruption of the elite and powerful. And the terrible wrong that was done to those kids was also hidden in darkness, covered up. Even now after years there are still may questions about who was really responsible for the tragedy at each step from the illegal modifications to the ferry, the extra weight beyond capacity allowed on board for more money, the coast guard doing nothing to rescue passengers before the ferry was fully submerged and actively preventing civilian boats from approaching and trying to help, the volunteer divers who said they could have still saved people in air pockets but were prevented from doing so and had their equipment tampered with, to the lies and lack of reporting in the media.
If you want to know more, I really recommend the Italian Army explained video for this song and/or the Rotten Mango video on the Sewol Ferry Tragedy.

Hi there, The song itself wasn't written about the ferry disaster, but the MV obviously is related. In fact, Jin confirmed a few years later in an interview that the MV was about a sad event. You didn't notice that the merry-go-round has the word "You'll never walk alone" on it. As I'm sure you know being from the UK, same as me, this is the song for Liverpool Football Club. Do you remember the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 where about 90 people including children sadly lost their lives in a crowd crush? Hillsborough families met with relatives of the victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster to show their support and to share their knowledge and expertise in seeking out the truth of what happened. If you watch the Italian Army explanation or do your own research and see some of the videos taken by the students please have plenty of tissues handy because it is heart breaking. 💜💜💜💜🖤🖤

    • @lw4067
      @lw4067 Před 23 dny +1

@@Imme_begin Err, yes I know it's originally from the musical and realise Liverpool FC fans have adopted it. The fans have sung it before every kick off since the 1960s. The song was covered by Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963 and was number 1 in the UK for 4 weeks. Bill Shankley (Liverpool's then manager) picked it during an appearance on the BBC's Desert island Discs radio show in 1965 ahead of that year's FA Cup final and the fans sang it in the stands and it was shown on TV. the words 'You'll Never Walk Alone' appear on Liverpool's crest based on the design of the Shankly Gates, which were erected outside Anfield in 1982. 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster. On the day after the tragedy 13,000 people gathered at Liverpool's Roman Catholic Cathedral; 5,000 in the church, and 8,000 on the streets outside and those watching on tv listened as YNWA was sung by single choir boy, offering comfort and hope to a city in mourning . So yes Liverpool fans have adopted the song but it has special meaning to them and so yes, it is their song and being 72 years old I've grown up with them singing it at every game.

This is South Korea’s longest-charting song of all time on Melon, its main domestic streaming platform. One of the most touching moments to me personally was when the father of one of the victims of the tragedy thanked BTS for remembering the children through the song.
At the same time, it has become an anthem of hope through other difficult times as well. During the worst days of the pandemic, BTS participated in the virtual global graduation ceremony organized on CZcams, Dear Class of 2020. They gave an inspirational message and closed out the ceremony with a live performance. Spring Day became a message of hope to young people dealing with the loss and uncertainty of that time.
When I became an Army, Spring Day was new. Now it bisects parts of a long career and will ultimately be part of their “early” discography as they continue. The true proof of its quality is its timelessness. It continues to be relevant across time, situation, culture, and nationality. Just like the group who crafted it.

I would tell you to watch Italian Army's version because it's longer. It's more like a documentary and there are scenes from the incident as it was unfolding. But as a parent, you will have a hard time. I was broken watching it but I still tell people to do it because I want these kids to not be forgotten.
There are also se videos on the aftermath. As it says the government tried to ignore this and they refused to do anything. Regular people who were divers went to retrieve the bodies of these children in coming weeks. One man wouldn't stop until all the children were found and after he himself committed suicide because of the tragedy.
I know it's difficult but if you can, watch the Italian Army explanation and maybe some more videos on the aftermath and some amazing ordinary heros. Just to pay tribute to them.

  • @milachilla
    @milachilla Před 23 dny +9

The incident is actually SO INFURIATING!!! Rotten Mango did an episode on it, and the more you find out about how it was handled, the angrier you get. Just to touch on it, the government refused help from the US NAVY - who was close by and had so many TRAINED divers who could rescue the students on board, ready to jump in the water and save so many…. Saying like “we got this”, but the officers were not trained divers and actually were “monitoring the situation” circling around the sinking ferry on boats. Literally.
Pro divers - citizens, not officers - rescued more than the govt sent officers. And it’s not like there that many of them, and some have died in efforts of rescue.
Parents were waiting at the shore, just watching it sink and waiting while being told they can’t go in the water to try to save their babies and not seeing much being done.
It’s so heartbreaking, they were so young. So so young. And all because the company that owned the ferry was greedy, so overloaded it and not only ignored safety measures but did the complete opposite; the president at the time handled it poorly and did jack shit; there wasn’t a single person in charge who cared enough to just order officers to help.
It’s not 100% confirmed but since it’s now so tied to the incident (honestly I’d call it a crime), the MV is super emotional. Spring Day you’re a queen and will always be famous, longest charting song on Melon Chart. 💜

You definitely want to hop on the Italian ARMY channel and watch their explanation next. This was actually the "dumbed down" version of the events and how they relate to the MV. The woman who runs the Italian ARMY channel (yes, you will need captions on) actually went to South Korea, interviewed people, etc. for her version...and, thus, it goes into MUCH more detail. Still only around 17 minutes long, but it's a very powerful 17 minutes.

The reason the government is being criticized in this music video is because members high up in the government had an interest in the ferry company and had made illegal modifications to the ferry to allow it to carry more cargo and make more profit, ultimately causing it to capsize and sink. Because these government ministers didn’t want their illegal actions to be known as the cause of the tragedy they forbid the coastguard from going out to the ship to rescue passengers. The few who survived were rescued by local fishermen until the coastguard stopped them from going near the ship as well. Then the government tried to sweep the whole thing under the rug by manipulating the media and stories about the event that were coming out. Even telling people not to believe the victims’ parents about what happened in the incident because they were just trying to get compensation money from the government. Luckily not many believed them thanks to works of art like Spring Day which subtly (or in some cases not so subtly) criticized the government’s handling of the tragedy, which led to mass protests and eventually the impeachment of South Korea’s president. Soon after the incident occurred BTS’ boss Bang Shi Hyuk took them to visit the victims families to give the boys a more compassionate connection to the tragedy. They also made a monetary donation to the victims foundation.

1st time I heard this song, I Broke down. No idea what the lyrics were saying. I didn't watch the MV either. I listened to the music first.
They are masters at Lyric Painting.
They use the music to reflect what the words are saying. And Sprint Day sounds like pain feels to me.
There's a Grungy, very harah guitar sounds throughout most of the song that affects me so much for being in the midst of so much beauty. Their voices sound a bit drowned and Heavy and it's just a bit uncomfortable. But once U get to the "OHHH" at the end, it opens up and all grunge clears out. Almost like I could breathe better.
Man this song is so beautiful.
The Video is a masterpiece as well.

Their artistry is so beautiful and meaningful, it's the reason why we feel so strongly connected to them. They don't feel like celebrities, they are my best friends who comfort me and give me a safe space to feel all kinds of emotions. This song was made by BTS and Apparently (speculated by Army) dedicated to the ferry tragedy that happened in 2015, where over 300 lives where lost, majority of whom are students. Spring Day is the song that made me Army. It's difficult to put into words how it affected me, but there is a saying that goes, "BTS will find you, when you need them the most". The Sewol ferry disaster is heartbreaking. The New Yorker made a 30 minute documentary about it, that is on YT. I will warn you, it is not easy to watch. For me, the pile of clothes represented the belongings of the students that continued to wash up on shore for weeks after the disaster. Even now, the fandom is going thru "winter" with all of the members doing military service, but Jin is being discharged in two weeks! "Wait a little bit, just a few more nights, I'll be there to see you, I'll come for you".

The fact that you had those emotions by just watching the MV and hearing the music shows me how empathetic you are. I had just started finding out about BTS when I happened upon Spring Day. I researched the Sewol Ferry disaster and could not stop crying at the injustice. The way the government stopped rescuers, how close the ship was to shore, they could see the kids inside the ship. The video of the Captain and crew, being helped off the ship, out of uniform so ppl wouldn't know. How the ship was changed 23:29 to get more cargo on, which made it unsafe. How it still passed inspection by government officials.
Artists who wrote or spoke about this were targeted. BTS could not openly talk about it. The video by Italian Army goes more into the corruption and heartache of the parents. Have your tissues ready.
