How to layer coloured pencil - further base layers - starting to look a bit prettier!

  • Second part of my layering video showing the initial base layers of a spaniel's ear. I do spend quite a bit of time adding these layers and building up the structure of the ear, but you'll see at the end the result really is beautiful. Lovely rich colours, soft looking fur, and no stripes to be seen ;)
I'm using Clairefontaine Pastelmat in dark grey, Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'Ache Pablos and Derwent Lightfast pencils.
The piece of paper under my hand is glassine paper, which I use to stop my hand touching the paper and smudging my drawing.

Listening to your advice to not make the shadows appear as lines of darker color, but to blend each layer and color in soft tones is greatly helpful. As I looked at the real ear, then your rendering, your versions is prettier and pleasing to the eye. I would have, in my inexperience at this time, would have drawn the ear as closely to the photo. I would have ended up with lines of darker color and not the well-blended layers of hair as you drew. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much for your videos ! This is the kind of videos that really help, you explain really well, it's so interesting to see the different stages, not in time lapse but slowly step by step and with good explanation. This 2 vidéos helped me, the technique of layering fur is a little bit different from other videos i've seen. The tip to avoid green when we add black is good too. And now I think I stop my drawings too soon, I feel like I'm on the stage at the beginning of this 2nd part and wonder why this is still grainy and why the details I try to add don't really show off/work, by watching your video I think the answer may be "just keep going and layering" (I hope my English is correct I'm French ^^") You are very talented and patient !

Aww i liked these videos but why did you skip it at 38 mins in, it would have been great to see more of you putting the detail in, there aren't many videos that do this!

It's tricky to get huge videos up on youtube. I have real time videos over on my Patreon channel as well - up to 40 hours long :)

You should have more information on your patreon page in your videos and your about on your youtube profile.
