Adding White Highlight to Your Coloured Pencil Drawings

A lot of people ask me about how I add white highlights into my drawings, so I thought I’d put a quick video together to give you all a few tips.
I’ll show you four drawings in this video, all of which have been drawn on different supports, so you can get an idea of how I add highlights on Black Mount Board, White Pastelmat Board, Grafix Drafting Film and Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Paper.
I also use slightly different techniques in each video, so you can see the different methods I use depending on the subject and the paper I’m using.

Thankyou so much, l've never about using a watercolour white pencil before, and the tip using scotch tape is another gem. Very informative. Feeling really pleased and excited and will go back to my painting and try these tips. Incidentally l mainly work with pastel pencils.

I find your video very interesting! I had seen some methods of making highlights, but I had never heard of Museum Aquarelle pencils, that this pencil are very opaque! and...wow they are very expensive! I have Derwent and I know that Chinese White is a white pencil opaque, very nice, and the Luminance too. Thank you very much for these tips!😊

Bonny thanks so much for your very helpful videos. I would love one on creating iridescence, for instance on a Kingfisher. How does one get the blue spots on the feathers to glow and how does one capture the iridescence of the blue-green colours? Thanks again!

As I watched this I learned several things. I never heard of using a heat pad underneath a drawing. Do you use it for all papers and all pencil brands? Do you also use it when applying watercolor pencil which will be moistened?
It's actually a great way to help blend, especially when using the hot press paper and a shiny subject. I don't use one all the time, but it works well with wax based pencils although oil based ones do work too :)
"don't take an awful long time either...." * flashbacks to ~50h piece on black paper of only A4 size * Hm, maybe I should try that white aquarelle pencil I have wet sometime. So far I only found they "disappear" off the paper (get lifted off and/or smudged no matter how careful) even easier than Polychromos....which reminds me, I must be the only person for whom Polyhromos are actually a must, the main cp, for drawings like this (bnw on black). They have their cons, some of which are pros at the same time, depending on what you need, but only they allow me to work in a way I can produce a decent result because of ___reasons___. Yeah, not everything is blinding white. Artists often over exaggerate the highlights on pieces like this which decreases the realism, while I went the other way a bit too far creating good tonal values and contrast, but have some works lack a bit of a punch, I blame the ref, XD For example, while drawing a black person (with dark skin) on black paper, felt it would look too unnatural if I boosted the brightness and the result was that the piece needs to be viewed under certain lightning to be really appreciated as a lot of detail etc. is not visible under just any lighting. In this case, my drawing lamp is probably to blame too - the drawing seemed bright enough under such lighting. Oh well. Great video, loved the doggie especially, so lovely, wonderful detail and contrast! The color pieces are incredible of course, I can only hope I'm able to get there some day.
I find it very frustrating too working on black, I find with white highlights on normal paper you are right - many artists make the highlights very light - and actually they're not. I tend to try to downplay the very light areas as in real life they aren't as bright.

new to coloured pencil drawing and just deciding what paper medium suits me best, is there any answer to pencil shine ? the one thing i have noticed is that the women are a lot better than the men at this , i think thats because they have more patience and a lighter touch on the paper than the men. enjoy your videos and have learnt a lot, thank you..
Shine - I think that comes from pressure and wax pencils - if you lighten your pressure up a little then the shine should be less :) Re women and men - I guess the ratio is very different - there are some amazing coloured pencil artists who are men though - have a look at Aron Gadd - he's the best of the best :)

I’ve got a seedling mat but I wondered if you think the Fabriano Artistico 300gm/600lb hot pressed paper would still work with it or will it be too thick?
