- Paimon is one of Genshin Impact's most interesting characters due to the fact that her design alone tells entire stories on end. This video discusses Teyvat's longstanding struggle with water which is in turn heavily inspired by the legendary Flood Myths of the Ancient Near East around Mesopotamia and the Levant. It is worth noting that there is a lot more to say when it comes to Paimon, the moon, and fate... However, this video serves as a means for me to share a few fun ideas for now.

I always find Paimon to be really adorable... Until she opens her mouth and reminds me why she is named after a devil.

Actually Paimon was "hurt" once in the chasm arc where she directly felt the exhaustion. The first and last time so far we ever see her getting affected by the story

The "she" Dain mentions is not our twin sister but Paimon. makes sense since MC can be either of the twins.
I always wondered about this. I just assumed it was them slightly-canonizing Aether as they’ve done subtly here and there. But I think you’re right that it doesn’t refer to Lumine because that’s much less subtle than their usual preference for Aether.
Or the Sustainer since she seems to be corrupted and in need of saving.
Holy that ending was so good... It also makes a lot of sense in the context of what Dainsleif says. I can only imagine how insanely badass a final boss who is the combination of Paimon (Celestia) and Dain (The Abyss) would look like. So much potential.

Come to think of it, the Primordial One was androgenous (male and female) so this makes sense.

I'm so glad that you acknowledge how unlikely it actually is for Phanes to be the Primordial One. It's been sooo long since I've heard anyone focus on this point, even though it's incredibly important!
While I've heard people reason that Paimon may be a moon sister before, I haven't seen it done this well.
Honestly, fantastic job on the whole trilogy \o/ I'm excited to see how/if future lore will corroborate your speculations, and what important details we may still be missing.
Man, Genshin lore is just a gift that always keeps on giving.

This entire trilogy has been a hell of a ride with so many thoughts to be had. Thank you for all the hard work digging through so much information and then presenting it in a detailed and exciting way. I will definitely be hung up on these theories for a long time.
The ending here was absolutely amazing with Dainsleif. Everything going back to him and Paimon is like a perfectly wrapped ribbon. So excited for the future of the game's story.

The theory makes sense because if you go into the big hilichurl tribes of mondstadt, they have a banner on one of the towers made up of 1 blue with a white star and 3 yellow with blue stars, 3 moons and 1 sun.
Phanes being the sun shade and the possible demiurge was always a personal theory, this video really just solidified it in a strange way.
Since natlan is just a year away, we can kinda predict where the lore will take us if the main inspiration is the aztec empire, due to the myths of the 5 suns and the earth being a giant beast that demands sacrifices in order to keep the world afloat, and that the last cycle of humanity will end in an earthquake somehow. Earthquakes that happen underwater usually leads to massive tidal waves and floods.
I find it interesting that Paimon has moon connections, since the moon irl controls the ebb and flow of the oceans and because Honkai 3rds Kiana is also explicitly tied to the goddess Chang'e, another moon goddess whose name looks like the english word change. Maybe Paimon also has these connotations.
I remember him talking about the Kiana stuff in one of his old videos. Now that you bring it up again, I think this is deliberate by Hoyoverse.
I do think it's pretty clear, 99% that Paimon was a celestia-level god, beyond the archons, whose power was drained and her body shrank, etc. I am REALLY looking forward to meeting full-power adult Paimon (even if it's only in flashbacks). I think that'll be rad. :3

What are your thoughts on Zhongli being one of the Shades? Since:
- Zhongli knows how the world was when it was first created?(Primo Elixir description)
- Zhongli wanted to go to the Lunar Palace? (Dreams of Dragonfell)
- When speaking about Heavenly Principles (order) in his ult voicelines, he literally means himself as the Heavenly Principles (wiki)
- he creates Mora with the Celestial symbol on it? He actually values his gnosis, while other archons don’t care or despise Celestia?
- Why didn’t he forget that there was previous Dendro Archon? (Character story 5)
- The cubes on his shield are kinda moving like that of the Sustainer.
- Jiu (Azhdaha) called him an Usurper? Apep called the Heavenly Principles the Usurpers?
- not to mention that massive theory about the Sun god, the Solar Chariot…

I get this info from other theory crafter looking closely on the picture of when Paimon was fished out, which makes it weird why we go to mondo first in the story
Yes, and after fishing out Paimon, Traveller is just taking his time and doing nothing for months before going to that shore in Monstadt.
Makes you wonder if the Traveler originally was supposed to start their journey from Liyue at first.

Minor detail but I had no idea Paimon was the closest demon to Lucifer... Given how Traveler has so many parallels to Lucifer, it makes all the more sense she's always by their side! Oh and her being basically Genshin's version of a Stellaron Hunter is quite funny given how she couldn't be more different from them in vibes.
Or Paimon pulled a Scaramouche and rewrote herself out of the Archon's memories

Forget about real life historical/legendary analogies and elemental and types restrictions happening in Honkai Star Rail, Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact, it's all about authorities of Mihoyo's multiverse with their gifted limitations and the motifs of humanity optimism and processes for ascensions (as even Imaginary Space which births Herrscher authorities, Aeons and other authorities akin to "Honkai", "Abyss", "forbidden knowledge", trees and seas analogies, etc are born from Imaginary Space, even Otto Schicksal which was one of the biggest antagonists in Honkai Impact, observed Dvalin and Rita Rossweisse, which is a character pivotal to Captain of Hyperion adventures), it's all about handling authorities and how humans coping with it, although these brings a lot of moral dilemmas to those not gifted with Powers and Authorities (Kiana, Captain of Hyperion and some Aeons akin to Akavili, Aha, Nihility, Fuli & Finality)
I don't mean to fully undermine the in-game evidences, it's just Genshin Impact story is ended up being part of grand universe/multiverse sets by Mihoyo, the power level outside Teyvat are obscenely powerful and starts attempting to grasp Metaphysics of Religion (albeit cannot do it fully due to real life history with it's archeology can have a looot of controversial baggages, hence Mihoyo plays it safe and not as deep as it is, except when trying to peel the layers of reality, although they only do it to Honkai games and Honkai Impact is the best instance that limited events happens to intersect with the main story, hence I'm mentioning a lot of severely underrated and underappreciated Captain of Hyperion and his eldritch degrees of natures, he even mentioned of gaining audience with Azathoth in the game's old CNY 2020 "Reunion Dinner" event when he's cooking with the Valkyries and guy's aware of many main story characters' biography and journey despite only directly interfere at the end of the game's part 1 finale to help Kiana embraced by Finality authority and merges with Imaginary Space into a slow singularity process until "A Post Honkai Odyssey" timeline happened which sets in the future of most Mihoyo games' timelines)
From the traveler voice lines, when paimon appear and disappear when we open and close the menu is canon to the story, that maybe why she never get hurt, she always disappear

I personally think that the Second Who Came won. Apep says otherwise, but remember that Irminsul can change memory of inhabitants of the world. And it ties very good with the main inspiration for the game - Gnosticism. Because by that move we have a false god, a Demiurge in Celestia, not the Primordial one. But I don't think that it denies your theory abour Paimon - she may still be trying to create a predermined destiny, and be the Moon sister.
I am still unsure whether the Second Who Came won or lost. It is hard to tell because the winner can just rewrite history as they wish.
Most likely she's speaking the truth, it is my theory that apep isn't affected by irminsul since she's THE dragon lord of dentro. So, since she should had complete control of it (dendro) she either created it or has a higher authority to it even without her powers. Of course this can only happen if you think of irminsul as another creation originating in the light realm, like the primordial sea. EIther way, its uncertain unless she predates it or if it was created by the invader gods (either PO or second who came)
I still think that Paimon is Phanes, Istaroth is the shade of time, the Sustainer is the shade of void, King Deshret is the shade of death and Morax is the shade of life.
I don't know how much the writers at HoYo looked into the ancient floods on Earth, but they were not only very real, there were several floods in the span of a few thousand years - Meltwater Pulse 1A, 1B and 1C, triggered by the Younger Dryas impact event. There is still a debate on the first flood, whether it was caused by the exit from the glacial period or by falling meteors, but there is clear evidence that Earth got hit by quite the meteor shower and the whole planet was burnt and then flooded repeatedly. Also, these floods wiped out the civilizations that existed back then, which were quite advanced.

Just a thing about the Shogun not killing Paimon during their very first encounter. As crazy as it may seem, Ei and the Shogun were actually "fair". Yeah, they were tyrannical and killed tons of people, but she never killed anyone that wasn't directly involved in the situation that ended with her deeming their lives should be lost. There was a duel to the death culture in Inazuma, and even if witnesses got distraught upon seeing a loved one being killed, the Shogun wouldn't do them any harm.
In the scene here, it was the Traveler that disrespected the Shogun by directly interfering with the vision confiscation. Paimon was just a bystander, and Thoma also wasn't directly involved in that action. If the Shogun had killed the Traveler, she probably wouldn't have killed Paimon or Thoma afterwards, she'd just finish the vision taking ceremony and send Thoma and Paimon on their way. And if they protested, she might even invite them to a duel to the death and all, but she would respect the customs in Inazuma, not just slaughter them without them having their "fair" chance to duel her. That said, her victory against them would be a sure thing... So that's why "fair".
I don't know, I like Paimon's EN voice acting, the CG expressions just can't back up the drama and expressions Corina puts in, I realized this while watching a fanmade animatic of Paimon. When the anime releases, we'd actually get to see and hear the cast lipsync properly and it'd feel better.
You'll see that even with only listening to the cn dub, which we can say is the "OG-one" ig ... I use it sometimes and she feels so much gentler in a way. Nothing wrong with Corina's voice, they're really talented, but just like Xiao, the direction they got wasn't the best sadly .. The character of Paimon is annoying one, but not in this loud and shouting way

She may be annoying, but that doesn't stop her from being a genuine friend to the Traveler. I love the dynamic they have with each other. Really wholesome.
And a lot of her annoying behaviour can be lumped into Genshin being a game at the end of the day. Especially a gacha game were people try to skip dialogue. Why do you think she keeps repeating what other people say? Because players don't pay enough attention to the dialogues, so they have to be constantly remindes of what's going on. Ofc it's to the detriment of people actually interesting in the story, but unfortunately we're not the only ones playing
We skip dialogue not because we do, but because they're not captivating enough for us to listen through it, take a look at games like Red Dead Redemption, people do listen in to most of the dialogues there because it is well written, Genshin doesn't have that kind of quality writing, unless you're playing the game in Chinese and you can read mandarin.

@@shycrackerno, an antagonist is simply a character who opposes the protagonist, who is simply the main character. the attitudes, goals and ideals of these characters are irrelevant. your antagonist can be a good person, and your protagonist can be an asshole. all that matters is that their goals, ideals, etc oppose each other.
like, for example, despite being a Good Guy™️, sonic the hedgehog is the antagonist in many routes of the “hit” game shadow the hedgehog (2005), as in those routes he opposes shadow, who is our protagonist even though stealing candy from a baby is fine by him.
so yeah fischl, rosaria and especially xiao aren’t even remotely antagonists, as they don’t oppose the traveler’s goals and especially their ideals. maybe get more acquainted with media literacy.

I also find the fact that paimon is a girl to be very interesting because the real paimon (the demon version) is constantly looking for a male host and very violently rejects female ones, it's because demon paimon has a very feminine face despite having a male body so he's looking for a perfect male body

Sumeru is based on the migration history of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism across the Middle East and South/South East Asia. Notice that we have a bunch of names that are very Malay/Indonesian, such ss Effendi and Maimunah. Malaysia and Indonesia (and Singapore, where Hoyoverse has an office) are one of the big hubs of that migration - Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, and Hindus and Buddhists make up a huge portion of SEA.
Also, another name for Mesopotamia is Sumer.
If we look at the Welkin Moon, the girl there really resembles Paimon. And when we look closer, Paimon's cape might actually have a hood, and so the Welkin moon character might actually be Paimon wearing her hood. Not to mention the... pot it sits in. Isn't Paimon called emergency food? She was even drawn like that by the Traveller themselves. So yeah, the Moon Sister theory seems to be really valid. I find it extremely interesting that Moon Sisters might be Phanes's sisters actually. I always kinda didn't like the theory that they were shades. They seemed to be separate beings. Thank you for another good theory video. The end caught me off-guard. So exciting!
Fact the Teyvat was a planet was confirmed long time ago. In 1.0 there was a bug that lets you jump way too high. If you actually traveled far enough you could see a sphere forming shape.
As a jew I can tell you that "Tyvat" is not "Tyva" (ark) they are a bit diffrent HOWEVER, the word "Tyvat" does actually exist in Hebrew, It is the 10th mounth according to the hebrew calendar and is "The month of mourning" because in 10th day of Tyvat many horrible things happened to jews, it is known as the "gate of all that is evil and bad" Basically because this is the start of all misfortune that happened to jews, for example in this months Nevochadnezar king of Babylon started his siege on Jerusalem in order to destroy it, kill and enslave its people, and exile them.
The name of "Tyvat" In heberew was taken from the Assurian word "To drown" (mostly in mad)

There is a problem, some books say two of the moon sisters die. I think it was around the fight with the second throne. This doesnt mean Paimon could not be the remaining sister, or the sun. Istaroth was called Kairos, the god of moments, so there must be Chronos the other god of time. Maybe the shades are based on what artifacts represent? This view about destiny makes sense. Btw, the pale princess and the six pygmies talk about the night mother, wich is Nix and she is consider the mother of Phanes. Grieg mythology has many variation, in some the Moirai are the child of Zeus and Themis, in other Ananke is the mother, and in other Nix is the only parent. The pale princess blabla book was the one the abyss mage stole from Lise and said it contained a "secret"... Also Nix is a child from Chaos, another god... and the Abyss is considered chaotic... Aether was a primordial god too 😮 but I dont remember a Lumine ... Ha! This could somehow explain (if you chose Aether) why she idnt a descender uh? Btw Aether (the god) have a sister wich.... he marry. I dont think Hoyoverse is going that route (i dont want it neither lol) but is curious how in game there was a traveler from afar that married ... i believe it was a moon sister. Again, i dont think Hoyoverse is going this way, i believe Aether and Lumine are name just representing Lucifer, so i dont think they are going with Aether the grieg god. Now, Nix, that is another story.

I'm not 100% sure if Neuvillette mentioning 'planet' is really what he's supposed to say. I don't have access to chinese original but we've been subject to clunky translations before and pretty much all other evidence suggests Teyvat is not a planet in usual sense.

The Monad sent Jesus to the material world to bring back Sophia and for that, it gave him the Gnocism aka The Divine Knowledge.

I wouldndt say paimon is the worst written. It’s really the flaws of the exposition dumbs she is forced to give us because they don’t want to show us they tell us(probably because showing us story details would cost more to develop and it’s just easier to have someone explain everything) and the fact that her voice is grating on the ears.

It was not a contradiction. If Phanes is the son of Ananke and the Moirai are also her daughters, and if the Moon Sisters in Genshin are 3 out of the 4 Shades, then the Moon Sisters physically resembling Phanes (their brother) would make sense.
