How Hoyoverse are hinting that Teyvat is a Dream | Genshin Impact & Honkai: Star Rail Speculation

  • The Penacony Trailblaze Mission series, Then Wake To Weep, with Sunday is easily one of the best stories that Hoyoverse has developed for any of their games so far.
With outstanding narrative, strong characters, and outstanding music, Penacony would have already ended on a very high note. However, as it turns out, almost everything that The Nameless experience in Penacony with Sunday also functions as a significant foreshadowing of the overarching plot of Genshin Impact, integrating several themes and symbols from the two games seamlessly.
It is genuinely impressive how well Penacony utilized its inspiration from the Angel's Egg to not only tell its own good story but potentially teach us about Genshin simultaneously.
Also, Sunday is now my favourite Hoyoverse character and I wanted to talk about him while I have a chance.
    Thanks for watching 😃!

The light around Mikhails' "moon" also looks a lot like the refractions inside a kaleidoscope.
And a common name for the kaleidoscope is "looking glass".

What you said in combination with the fact that the Sky of Dreamflux Reef is a reflection of the Golden Hour (Penacony's main city) along with Perinheri mentioning how children have to die to walk in the fire of two worlds pretty much tells us precisely everything Hoyoverse is going towards in Genshin Impact.
When people go to Dreamflux Reef, they think they are dead, which matches the "Dying to Walk in the Fire of Two Worlds" from Perinheri.

@@DragonMJEWell... A dream...It makes me wonder if in Perinheri, the question: Are you dead? Wouldn't it mean: Did you enter the dream? To which Perinheri didn't understand, but replied yes. This would show that perhaps Perinheri did not enter into Teyvat's illusion, and for this reason he was able to see beyond Angélica.

Wait, what if instead of committing "not alive", the scene with Caribert taking off his mask was him choosing to wake up from the "dream", escaping his own script? Since he was supposed to be connected to the Loom of Fate. It's speculated in game that hilichurls wear their masks so they won't have to face their image (their reality now), but Caribert took off his mask by his own choice > facing reality (I guess he preferred Robin's pov over Sunday's 😅)

What I love about everyone’s reaction to him is how they all feel very strongly about him. They either absolutely despise him or love him and adore him. And even the ones who despise him do acknowledge how well-written he is (the ones that actually paid attention to the story that is). I haven’t seen anyone be neutral about him which I think speaks of complexity of his character.

In a way, the Narcissenkreuz quest "spoiled" the plot, where instead of Mary-Ann stuck in a dream that is her Annapausis, we have someone stuck dreaming of Teyvat. The world is fake but not completely, I believe that the "dream" is being "replayed" on top of a physical world. It also explains why the vase was still broken after Nahida "fixed Irminsul". You can change some contents of the dream, but not the underlying physical reality it seems.
Maybe that makes Geo special: it doesn't interact with the other "magical" elements, and Zhongli is so different to other archons. The whole circle vs square thing could be dream vs physical reality. It is possible that the Melusines see the physical world and not the dream.
Similar to the samsara, Nilou was "cursed" to relive the same day, someone is reliving the same story in different ways, and we are at the fourth iteration of the dream.
The dream is apparently about a hero fighting a dragon, and of a great calamity that ensues. The context for the fight is a kingdom, as to which one (Celestia, the one in the gnostic hymn, Immernachtreich, the Moon Palace) I don't know, but one should be the "real one" and the others are dream iterations.
It seems that some people "figure out" directly or indirectly that Teyvat is dream-like. One way to break free of the dream seems to "gather enough will" to oppose the will of the dreamer.
As for who is dreaming, not sure yet. It could be one of the "main" characters, it could be the Heavenly Principles. It is also possible that the Heavenly Principles has "hijacked" the dream by gathering enough will, for example by succeeding in one of the attempts to merge enough minds (other attempts have been done by Deshret, NarcissenKreuz, the hive mind in Sumeru and Phobos in Remuria).
Some interesting lines: "reality is buried deep beneath the illusion" and "waking world, you seem woven from the stuff of dreams" by Raiden Shogun. And of course Rukkha saying that Nahida is her in the next samsara, or "the same character in the next iteration of a play that is a dream".

I want to point out, as well, Egeria's sacrifice to seal the abyss in the desert that created a tree that reached through the sky into the gaping opening in both the sky and the earth that until you repair it exists as a 'mirror' that allows you to see the husk of the tree when you stand on it, but when you stand on the tree stump and look up, you can see the desert where the other portal is. When you repair it, a ghostly tree emerges from the stump and reaches up to the hole in the sky, through the portal in the desert, creating a second oasis. You can find a consecrated cat, there, that sort of reminds me of the cheshire cat with how it seems to disappear and reappear (kind of like the rift hounds?) You can't go through the portal until after you go to repair the hole, but it simply becomes a not-quite domain that you need sorush to help you navigate. Sorush, who is a descendant of Egeria's tears in the same way Oceanids are. And all this happens in the area of Sumeru that the boys from the Narzissenkreuz quest went to study the cataclysm disaster. 'u'

    • @donut1550

Lol reading about that tree reminded me of this one visual novel made for GGZ called "Honkai Servant Era" and in the last chapter, one of the "familiars" finds a device that once activated, causes the "World Tree" to grow. Idk why but it does lol
Also idk why this visual novel and other GGZ lore is overlooked, because I found connections to Genshin in this also.
Like one piece of info that talked about a world that was created called the "Ark" and it's supposed to be a safe place from the Honkai. Dunno if it's about Genshin, but Teyvat does mean "Ark" in Hebrew.

[23:49] My favorite comparison to exemplify this would be with the book *The Neverending Story* _(Die unendliche Geschichte, 1979):_ Bastian, the reader _(us?),_ sees the people of Fantastica _(Teyvat?)_ as mere characters in a book but slowly realizes that they are somehow _aware_ of their condition as mere characters, and some of the people even end up trying to become un-alive by leaping into The Nothing _(the Abyss?)_ that is slowly swallowing Fantastica - becoming _"lies"_ in the real world after such process (...Hillichurls?); the hero, Atreyu _(...Dainsleif?),_ wants to save the Child Empress _(Istaroth!?)_ but she believes that only a REAL human from outside Fantastica can save both her and their world _(...an Descender?!)_ from total annihilation and, somehow, they end up summoning Bastian _(now the Traveller?!!)_ into their world; To save their world, the human needs to give her a new name _(Scaramouche / Irminsul rewrite!!)_ and _wish_ things in Fantastica but, in the process, they lose their memories of the real world _(... trading memories for power? "erosion"? becoming a character too, after forgetting their main purpose for doing too many daily quests?!)_
The parallels go on and on... I really love that book and it really _really_ fits your description of how Genshin would work to a "T".

Deshret with the "GOLDEN SLUMBER" pretty on the nose, aye? Remus and his Phobos... I'm almost sure Decarabian had something like that going on...
But more importantly, Alhaitam's and Nahida's story quest both talk about dreams and hive-minds and their dangers.

The question of "Am I dead?" reminds me of that weird ritual from the Crimson Moon Dynasty. Seeing as that's also moon related, I do wonder if there's any relation there too. Also, I see a resemblance between the Penacony Grand Theater, being the centerpiece of the story and a location floating in the sky above everything, and Celestia, also being the centerpiece of the story and a location floating in the sky above everything.
My crack theory about Teyvat was that the false sky is a sort of projection (maybe tangible too) created by something within Celestia. The fact that the Grand Theater bears resemblance to Celestia, houses a Stellaron whose power is harnessed to create the Dreamscape, makes this theory feel a little less crack.
Side note: It's funny how Sunday, who has very strong Luciferian (Luciferan?) references, is essentially foiled by Misha, the Legacy of the Watchmaker. The Watchmaker being Mikhail, whose name originates from the Hebrew Mikha'el: The very name that implies no person is like God. I.e. Michael, the archangel, who leads a heavenly host to war against Lucifer.
Edit: I'm live-reacting, so disregard my comments if I haven't said anything new or notable. xD

  • @DrakeWurrum
    @DrakeWurrum Před měsícem +9

Worth noting for the future: You didn't need to bring up the whole connection with Rhinedottir and Elynas to connect "mirror" to "looking glass" because a mirror is exactly what a looking glass is. It's an older phrase that refers to the exact same object.

I absolutely think that Teyvat is a Dream. But only in the same regards that Earth is theorized to be a Simulation or Dream. But, I think people are conflating the mechanism of a dream with the aspiration's of dreams. What I mean is, regardless if that either Teyvat or our own Universe is a Simulation is merely a mechanism for the story. In both cases, both worlds, like Penacony, are sequestered off worlds that are distinguished from the rest of their realities. Essentially safe-spaces.
So then what is the Dream in these cases; Teyvat, Penacony, or even Earth? It's the dream of Society of Civilization. Where people are welcomed and a safe space of order is created out of the chaos of outside the 'dream'. Regardless of their moralities; Sunday, Remus, and even the Primordial One, all had the dream to create a safe society for their people.
So why then, did they all fall short? Were their dreams inherently bad? No, I don't think so. I think they failed because along the way the Societies lost their Humanity. The people gave up their freedom for safety at the cost of their humanity. The only real weakness that's involved is where you knowingly give up your freedom of thought to become a drone in a safe society. Essentially a Hivemind.
Generally, when free ideas of thought can longer be exchanged because no one is willing to compromise for the sake of the whole,; is when Society leads to disaster. Whether by in-fighting or would be opportunists. It's not really about being weak or strong, but about giving up entirely. A perfect example of someone weak leading the charge against a corrupt Society is the Nameless Bard from Mondstadt. He was willing to fight for a better dream.

A dream or a sumsara? A Samsara is made-up for Teyvat. Teyvat is pretty much of a fairytale in itself. Then Nahida makes up the fairytale about the cat and the monster to remind Scaramouche about his life as Kabukimono in Tartara suma. . Gension uses The Steadfast Tin Soldier, for the little boy to explain to Kabukimono about having a heart! Of course fairytales are the basis for Gension and Honkai Star Rail!

Great video! Sunday is def one of the best Hoyo characters
also in regards to Teyvat being storybook/fairytale
in the new endgame description we got new hint alongside already existing ones:
"Before the beginning of all stories, after the end of all tales, in the interstice between reality and fantasy, there is an endless drama unfolding, never ceasing upon the stage - there is no beginning, nor an end, for in the telling of the "story" , the two differ not"
one thing we can gather from this is that end and beginning doesn't matter, because well...if you can know about both past and future in the present time, then it's like you are going through the pages of a book, like reading a story...story of Teyvat
hence "history of the future" is basically knowing what happens ahead in the book.

I had this thought that maybe the reason why haven't really seen any more hints of teyvat in other games(aside firm that one Davalin scene in chapter 17 in Hi3 and the Herta Space Staion easter egg) is that it's functioning like a Spiritual Adam. Where in multiple dreams or layers of dreams are woven together forming a world of it's own.

Thanks for doing the work making this video, I've been wanting to write up something on this topic for quite some time but just haven't had time. One thing you didn't even bring up is the nature of the Akasha, which had the ability to link and harness people's own dreams (which Genshin often equates to people's will and entire worlds) as power that can be used to heal Irminsul of its Forbidden Knowledge corruption and even to create a God. It also was able to draw people's consciousness into a looping shared dream. There are just endless hints. XD
EDIT: Also, consider the story of the First Sage, who went on a journey to find the God of Wisdom (unknowingly in a dream), and returned to reality with the knowledge and wisdom gained during that dream journey. Perhaps Teyvat is an opportunity for a condensed training arc?

I have been believing that the 3 moons, if the famous 3 princesses that are mentioned so much do not exist as living beings, but it is an allegory or rather a reference to the 3 realms, emptiness, light and reality, adding that its history is no more than a mixture of several myths that were superimposed and changing them little by little, where in reality they only tell us that the traveler from the other world (phanes) separated reality, which is where we are, from the other realms, since the human or can live in the original chaos that was teyvat, where the 3 realms existed at the same time that's why it had 3 moons.
But the end, where one is dies and all that, is nothing but the same cataclysm that has been telling us in different perspectives throughout the game, if the war of revenge and the fall of the ancient civilization.
But what this has to do with the video, I would say a lot, I do not believe that GI or rather teyvat itself is a dream, since there is a plane of dreams that now Nahida is the one who rules over it. I would rather say that Phanes, the one that many consider as a villain, always protected teyvat trying to give that Utopia that he talks so much about that was the ancient civilization and that now no longer exists, being his dream to protect teyvat from what is coming in the future that he has created, with the help of his shadows, this "theater" where each individual has to follow his script (destiny) so he can achieve his dream, save teyvat from the abyss (not the same as void), which seeks its destruction.
And unlike colonipenal he does not seek to control everyone, but to give freedom to all from that enemy that cannot be won with pure power, since he has destiny (the loom of destiny) in his hands.

Memoria is seeping into Asdana, which allows the imaginary become the truth. This is why one can't simply wake up from a dream in Penacony, in my opinion - it is the "reality" at that point. I'm only wondering who is in control of that "reality". If we are stuck in a loop, I suppose the question is, who would want the events of Penacony to keep looping?
Anyway, the video is amazing. You've connected a lot of dots as usual. It makes sense now why the PO could no longer control Teyvat fully after the fall of the Moon Sisters. As for Penacony, I love the characters and philosophies each represents. It's such a strong story in all aspects: character development, pacing, themes, philosophical/ethical/political questions, set ups and payoffs, and some twists/surprises. I'm glad to see such improvement in HSR's writing.

21:55 Thankyou for recommending this book, I haven't read this one. Lowkey that gives me more vivid depiction on what's going on in Genshin but it also gives me more questions instead.
I wonder if Genshin is on the route that consciousness is eternal thing? Because, I would really associate 'death' with the death of memory in this game. And Teyvat seems to be the most sustainable hub that the souls/beasts in this game envy the lives within it. Also, it's a term for an ark so I would let loose Mihoyo if they want to call it as a literal ark or even a planet, (or a bubble (ark) on a planet). Like, they know it would work nonetheless.
Also the fact that PO born from the egg and recreate the world with the same eggshell. If traveler eat the world, then the world is like an egg yolk? And if the egg is the microcosm of the world then what do they mean by 'the universe' in this? Abyss outside of Teyvat? (space itself?) And with the glaring existence of the genesis pearl, it wouldn't be so strange that somehow they would make it like 'a dream inside of a dream'. But, I do think this story is not about meaningless loops, this surely about progress. And depends on what they mean about progressing to be 'better', is it escaping samsara (death/eternity) or having a better samsara? (like Dainsleif wants?)

Going along with your conclusion that whoever is on Celestia is the one in charge of the "dream" that is Teyvat...
Well, the intro to every time we log in to the game is a pathway leading to a door, a pathway we can assume is in Celestia. And what happens when we enter the door? Genshin begins. The simulation starts.
Celestia might not just be a control tower, it might also be an access point. A gateway to Teyvat's "dream", even.

There is a sea of clouds below the login screen; if it were in Celestia, that would imply we should not be able to see Celestia from the ground of Teyvat. No, I think the login screen is beyond Teyvat entirely, and is a nexus realm where all the people's dreams can be accessed from.

I appreciate the sentiment but Clothar could just be using that line to calm down Caribert knowing how shocked he is going to be seeing himself as a monster. I am sure it has deeper meaning as well but in that context I think it's meant to be interpreted that way. Keep in mind Clothar said that to our sibling not us and this is a pivotal event for what Lumine chose to do next. Lumines understanding of Theyvat's structure is far deeper than ours the loom of fate is tied to her fate somehow for no longer being worthy of the Descender title. I am hoping we get some kind of context in the next update...

Search for the description of the "Baal Royale" drink that HSR made on a special, it tells about a 'ancient and long forgotten world' called 'Tavyet' (yes this is how it's written) discovered by IPC archeologists and that the drink is inspired by a tale they translated from there, it proceeds to tell said tale and it talks about the story of two sisters. Anyone reading that can tell is the story of Ei and Makoto. Hence the name of the drink. So, yeah, not only Genshin is from the same world, but it is also ancient and long forgotten. 😂

  • @Yaori999

I am not caught up with GI nor HSR (I am years behind on Genshin in fact), so I'm not gonna watch the video just yet as to not spoil myself on Penacony, but I will share my 2 cents anyway, to contribue to the discussion.
As a mainly Honkai Impact player, I've always considered Teyvat simply a bubble-world, and not a proper world like HI3, GGZ and HSR. Honkai Impact Part 1.5 and Part 2 reinforce that notion for me.
In The Reconciled Stars event Scara says that the sky is false. Of course, that stood out, but didn't make sense until years later. If I remember correctly, in Honkai Impact 3rd Par 1.5 deals with a bubble world where a sky is a reflection of the parallel bubble world, connected to it, with the "moon" being a crystal on the other side, therefore having a fake sky as there was no actual celestial body and cosmos. In part 2, it is stated that Oxia, a bubble world that contains one of Mars' cities has a world edge that can be reached within ~3 hours of driving. Therefore with a reinforced concept that bubble worlds can have physically limited and or fake boundaries, it's easier to believe that Teyvat is one such small space, as Teyvat is all there is, there are no other countries or continents that aren't part of 7 nations, Khanriah and Celestia, making it a pretty limited space, fitting a bubble world criteria.
Another thing that pointed me to this conclussion is the specific line of dialogue in HI3, that mentions bubble worlds having a rule that must be followed (unless it was specifically Country of Iron Sand/Holy Snow City and the Oracle thing), or else the entire bubble will face consequences, like a cataclysm that would destory that world. In Genshin's case, the consequence is wrath of Celestia/Sustainer of Heavenly Principals. Since she says "Human arrogance ends here" or something to that extent, it implies that humans of Teyvat broke the world's rule (likely Khanriah people becoming too technologically advanced and not dependant on Celestia, like being able to control elements without a vision and somesuch?).
Never considered it being a dream tho. Regardless, it would have to exist in a dimension or state, that would allow 2nd Divine Key to locate it and look into it, as Otto was observing Dvalin, and "dreams" do fall into this category somewhat. Like when Sirin and Kiana both used Void powers on Fu Hua's feathers to enter a dreamscape/illusion on separate occasions. So if they did it, 2nd Divine Key can observe similar occassions, as it's the same* power afterall, giving credibility of it being a dream/illusion (granted Divine Keys are not as flexible in their powers as live Herrschers, cue that whole explanation on dead/alive cores from Kolosten arc). For all we know it could still end up being one of Griseo's paintings, unless that's somehow been debunked as factually impossible. Does make me remember specific Vill-V line to Cosma, about if he went to space on the Ark and used his Vishnu powers to endlessly grow stronger, it would birth a bubble world out of sheer power level or something like that (stuff like this DID happen, as Kevin's existance created a bubble world that relives Sakura's fate and Welt created 3 bubble worlds with time loops and shit to protect the core of Reason), essentially meaning Teyvat could be either intentional or unintenional creation of a particularly powerful entity out there 🤔
Final few possibilities I can think of are: Teyvat used to be a real place, but it had it's own Finality which destroyed it, which created a bubble world of Teyvat, in a similar fashion how Moon and Mars have their own post-Finality bubble versions of themselves. Or if we lean on the dream aspect, it could somehow be a Genshin version of Adam Ruhani aka Spiritual Adam?
Idk if anything I said is mentioned in the video, again, don't won't to spoil myself on anything HSR related, even if I end up being cooked, rather than the one cooking.

No wonder Ei said that reality is the *stillness* beneath the illusion.

I'm not a Genshin player, but videos about Genshin lore speculations are always somewhat interesting to me. Hoyo's creators being huge Eva fans do seem to like the Instrumentality Project-esque plot on top of their Samsara cycles and struggles against fate.
In HI3, Project Stigma seeks to redefine humanity by flipping the relationship between humanity and civilization. If civilization is the story written by humanity; it's narrative... then civilization can be the blueprint by which humanity be created anew without the weakness that dooms it to its foe. Civilization is to be made into humanity's fairy tale, by which humanity is then turned into characters that exist to continue the tale(civilization). The executor of this grand project sits on the moon, having usurped the throne of humanity's foe where he would then be fated to watch over the new budding humanity in a solitary vigil for how many ages it would take for the new humanity to fully bloom. Should the plan succeed.
Kevin was once thought to be Merlin by Arthur... so not only is he the Icarus who flies to fall and inspire others to succeed where he fails, he is also the greatest of magicians.
