For me they could all be at number 1, but I had to make a list.
I didn't include the F1 cars, because I haven't filmed them myself.
So here are my 5 favorite BMW racecars.

The BMW E30 M3 at the beginning is absolute heaven. What a fantastic machine... well, the ultimate driving machine.

I watched two M1s at the nurburgring oldtimer grand prix this year and they were probably the loudest cars in their series. Absolutely breathtaking sound!
South Africa made a E30 333i. It was our version of the M3. We could not get die Normal M3 due to Apartheid. So we made our own

The Z4 is probably the nicest sounding V8 Ive heard to date lol. The brutal sound and thunder of The americas is amazing too but man, watching that Z4 snake up the Mario Andretti straight at Mosport, through the trees is just perfect!

The Z4 GT3 almost sounds like Nascar at high RPMs!
They're both cross plane V8s revving past 8k, so they're going to sound similar. The only reason the sounds aren't closer is NASCAR exhausts have absolutely zero muffling.

Just imagine BMW mated two S14 engines together, 5.0 L V8 at 9300rpm and 710bhp. That would have been something spectacular
Induction noise for days. So unique
I remember seeing the BASF M1 in a Nordschleife classic race, it put a giant gap on the others, then got disqualified for exceeding noise limits. xD
just give a damn about the noirse limits back then. it needs to scream the hell out of the crowd as it flies by... but in future exactly this will make it very difficult for the m1 procars to even drive
That would be awesome if BMW made a street legal M-1 with the 470 hp race engine.
If the m1 engine was on a road car without modifications, It would have huge costs of maintenance, and that maintenance should be done regularly.
The engine in the e28 m5 it's a detuned and adapted version of the m1 engine.
@@CarlosGarcia-ze6rt The m88 was also in the m635csi, as well as the south african 745i. Still one of the best sounding engines from them imo.

worked on a couple of procars....both had replacement t45 roll cages,as the previous ones were aluminium.and one had blew up chasing a porsche down the mulsanne straight...lovely motor,with epic raucous exhausts.

I’ve seen the JPS BMW E30 M3 2.5 evo many times and the induction noise is unbelievable. One of the best sounding race cars I have ever heard. The Z4 GT3 car sounded sensational in this video

Nailed it on the head. I love the m20, m30, s50, s52, s54, n54. They are all put to rest by the real engines that proved it all.

It actually an italian car with BMW logo: design by an italian desiner (Giugiaro), mechanic by italian ingeneer (Dallara)

BMW M1 sounds like a true F1 car with that high pitch scream and fiery exhaust !
BMW M3 E46 GTR GT2 (2004-05) has to be one of the best. P60B40 v8 was at its peak of engineering and performance for the E46 at that time. The drivetrain was the best sounding at that time too. Go watch onboard videos from the 2004 VLN and the 2004 Spa 24. The fly-by and exhaust notes were so unique and beautiful, it was like a crazy inline 4 mixed with an awesome v8
I know about the GTR. I only include cars that I've filmed myself. And since I haven't seen that E46 I can't include it in the Top 5.

No E46 GTR :( That's one rare bird though. My guess is you don't have footage of it. Good list otherwise though! :D

KOVROL PTG started with the I6 and then got the V8 I believe

I got a real spine tingle when the E9 got moving. Literally had to move around. Then it came back with the M1. V8 sounds good but real BMWs are 6s.

4:50 doesnt get any more badass than that. ... i think BMW heard all the "clown shoe" comments about the Z3 and got their revenge

But that's only my personal opinion. BMW is all about inline six and v12's.

do they use 2 different transmissions on mclaren race car?This one 3:21 looks like it has straight cut gears but the one in goodwood FOS,it looks like its sequential.
Straight cut gears is not one of the forms of gearboxes I.E manual, sequential, automatic. You can have a manual transmission in a race car with straight cut gears, you can also have a sequential gearbox with straight cut gears. You can also have paddle shift race cars with straight cut gears e.g. a gt3 car. If you own a manual car, put it in reverse and reverse quickly, you'll hear a whine, that is because on many normal road cars the reverse gear is straight cut.

@@cam_121 lol isn't a sequential gearbox still a Manual? It's just a. Different type a Manual. There is zero automation and it still requires a human to change it's gear. Thus manual.

I would have put in this list the Brabham bt52 motor, word champion F1 in 1983 with Nelson Piquet.
I'd like to make an argument for the Hamofa i8 GTR... but it's got a Z4 GT3 motor in it so you got the basic idea
For me it is:
1st S14 Gruppe A
2nd M88/1 Procar
3rd S50 Gruppe A
Even with todays technology the sound of a S14 cannot be recorded to be like in real life.
i think like a bonus car "not the top 5" would be the BMW M3 E46 v8 4.0 (2001-2004)

All these people saying the S14 sounds better than anything on this list are insane. It definitely deserves to be on here, but it to me it just sounds too similar to k20/K24 to mean anything to me, and I hear those everynight. The M88, M49, and S70 sound the most special in my view.
Wouldn’t say s14 sounds similar to any Honda motor. How can it when jt has Individual throttle bodies

I'm in love with Z4 E89 (and I have civil version) and it's V8 sound but must admit that this old E30 M3 race sound is more pure and nature. Rest of them are too generic and tinny.
