- Honda Racing HPD invited me out to shoot photos and video of their latest engineering marvel. This particular CR-V was built to test Honda's newest electric hybrid twin turbo V6 motor that is similar to the next generation of Indycar power plants.

it is sad we still never get hondas powerful engines apart from the jseries they would be better than most perfomance cars
Mad respect to Honda(HPD) for backing two very insane builds recently, the IndyTruck was gnarly but this definitely takes the cake.
I'm way more impressed with this than the IndyTruck!
The aero blades and canards on the side sill are very Super GT as well. It would be super cool if this turned up at Goodwood!
As some others have suggested, I really love the Super GT vibes the aero designers integrated into this CR-V. Definitely cool to see engineers being able to let loose a little on design and construction. 👍

This is reminiscent of the pikes peak suzuki escudo.
Larry Chen is a real artist with real talent, he’s also a true car nerd and enthusiast. His pictures and words need to be cherished. The man is a legend. He is the real deal
Imagine a suv racing series with this thing its really unique.
It makes more sense than GT3 where the new sports car it is based on has less power and no hybrid than the race car version.
Crossover series, a new hot hatch age

As soon as I saw this I thought of the Renaut Espace F1 van Team Renault built and Alain Prost drove. Ford also had their Supervans and BMW had the V12 X5 Lemans. So cool when companies through out the rule books on non-sports car ideas and go all out!
Not so cool when they downplay the inspiration of those that came before them. Lol

Time attack/hillclimb (pikes peak as Larry talks about). Seems like the perfect car for it. Really cool to hear James and Larry talk about the inspiration behind this machine. It also looks so similar to a Renault Clio V6, but that's just my Gran Turismo 4 enthusiast take. Really cool experiment.
Do you know about the renault Espace F1 he is talking about in the video? if not, look it up you're gonna love that beast
If they do run it they would have to make the hybrid part more reliable if it isn’t already because the indy engine would start suffocating at high altitudes.

WOOOW!! I'm soo blown away with this car A.K.A. SUV. This is such an Inspiring Vehicle for GearHeads... I'm a Civic owner 09 Sedan which I was doing things to and then I just stopped doing it and became discouraged... Watching this Vehicle just renewed that passion.. Truly Amazing!!

Honda spearheaded the Indy truck so yeah they definitely took all those ideas and put it into this.
Inspired by Pikes Peak. Suzuki did this with Escudo SUVs.

Just saw this thing in person at the 2023 St. Pete grand prix over the past weekend. Video just doesn't do this thing justice. So much more impressive in person! It's absolutely a stunning piece of automotive artwork!
I like how the B pillar has the front door gasket on part of the clam shell.
I think I like this more than the indytruck. I love the livery and the wheels 👌 the body kit and aero looks amazing too
The last time Honda let their engineers take a car and go out and build whatever they want, they made a Rwd Honda City that was the main idea that turned into the beloved NSX. We love when engineers can build with no rules!
I can't even imagine the level of straight up engineering that went into this build....insane.

Love your channel, brother. I think your work is awesome, and all the work that has gone into this car is truly amazing, I just can not get into the entire EV deal. Do people understand what it takes to get all that metal out of the ground, and when the batteries are done, they are done. Gasoline forever.

I have an awd crv sitting in my shop. This is very similar to the build in my brain except for the hybrid thing. I was considering a j35 mid engine setup. Im looking for drivetrain parts though before i pull out the scalpel.
The fact that Honda now has a non plug in hybrid civic now that gets 80+ mpg blows my mind.

Its like somebody said "build whatever car you want into hybrid racecar." And then this guy picks a CR-V. And did an amazing job!!
That rear view mirror should be in a Hondas, along with that throttle response and add that sound through the speakers
While Larry was excited to drop the Renault eSpace F1 similarities, I feel like the HPD rep downplayed it when clearly is was a major part of the inspiration. If you’ve never seen the Renault vid, go watch it.

This thing is sick!
This is what happens when a top OEM like Honda with pretty much limitless resources both in personnel/engineering talent and capital resources goes crazy with a one-off build. This is at the absolute least a half a million dollar project, I'm probably being very conservative with that estimate. Sort of reminds me of the Nissan Juke several years back that Nissan did with the help of a third party tuner out of the UK and it had a GT-R engine but this is a bit more wild than that.
