  • *Hi guys please note I had a malfunction with the audio and had to leave a lot out - I wasn't going to produce a vid on this one but used a bit of music to help produce something at least*
    "Hope you guys still enjoy"
    It was going to be a long day if we stuck to the plan which was to hit our low tide spot at the Northern part of Muriwai for a couple hours before finding a high tide hole to fish until we could come back and fish the low again if we wanted. Low was just after 8.00 so waking at 4.30 the others turned up just before 5.00, with a good hour and a half drive to our spot this would give us a good 2-3hrs before getting pushed off the bank we fish. The conditions looked great with a mtr or less swell which helps, we would help us to be able to fish it a little longer.
    Driving over the dune it was still dark and I know this is the best time to be getting a line wet, we made our way North and a few K's to the end we came across a bank that was already showing. Sometimes we walk a couple little holes before reaching the bank but being the West coast this constantly changes all the time. We were at our spot on that magic hour so we hurriedly set up before the Sun said good morning, it's the best time to have the baits in the water while still dark while fish are snooping the shallows. In front of the bank is a nice little channel that runs parallel to the beach and this is where fish make there way in and mooch up and down looking for food.
    My Sis had here bait out first and before I could bait up she was pulling in her first fish - first bait first fish. It was a nice little Snap to around 36cm which we decided to keep. Her next bait was in and she was hooked up to her second fish - 2 baits 2 fish with in minutes. I was next to hook up to another little Snap around 40cm, it seemed the fish were on prowl just before light. When fishing such places and such times you really have to get your baits out as quick as you can as most times Snapper will stop biting once the Sun gets to a certain angle, the better fish will move off so it's best to throw everything at them.
    My Sis was hooked up again and it was 3 baits 3 fish - it was getting a bit hectic and soon we were all hooking up to Snapper and Kahawai. There wasn't to much in the way of Big Snaps yet but they were all takable being around 30 -45cm. We let the smaller 30's go and kept from 35cm and up. We couldn't bait quick enough the little channel was thick of fish, it was like this the whole time until we were pushed off around 10.00 - we could of stayed for another few flicks but we decided we would stay for the day so we headed back down the beach in search of a hole to fish through the high. A couple K down we found a spot where we would have to get a little wet to be able to cast into the hole, we would be stuck here until about 5.00 fish or no fish. It was a pretty quite 3-4hrs with only a few Kahawai and a lonely Trev to come our way, what was pretty cool was having a couple of Eagle ray swim up and down in front of us the whole time feeding digging for crabs in knee deep water (which made wading out to cast interesting), we also knew our day wasn't over and still had a couple hours in the evening back at our low spot.
    We were able to make our way back up to our spot around 3.30 due to the low surf and we were back out on our little bank flicking our first baits for the arvo. Once again my Sis was hooked up - Pea hooked a few but also dropped a few. He wasn't haven't a great fish day with a few stingys hooked as well. 30min's in with the tide dropping it was once again all go, nothing big once again but every bait was grabbed wit in sec's of casting. Snappers, Kahawai and a few Trev's were coming out of the shallow channel washing up on to our little bank. It got so crazy after wading out 20odd mtrs and casting I couldn't even make it back to where we stood at the ready, I had my rod on my shoulder letting line as I walked only to have line flicking from the spool. Snapper and Trev were grabbing and I was having to strike the fish from my shoulder - it got pretty insane alright.
    We had about 10 Snaps 3-4 Trevs and couple Kahawai in the bin so we called it a day leaving the fish hard on the chew, even though we got nothing big it was just one of those days where it was action packed apart from the middle of the day on the high - this gave us a chance to lax back a little and have lunch which sometimes we don't get to have.
    It was great to get the Sis out again with some hot fishing action, and Pea and I as usual enjoyed the day fishing. I think a night fish is on the cards and I can't wait for that late March April fishing to start up there.

      Hahahaha - maybe one day, it's never been a part of what we do especially just being a flour and butter kind of fish cooker :-)
      Pea can cook fish different ways as he use to be a cook, but I can't even get him to hold the camera with out winging....
      I don't get a lot of time as I only fish basically one day a week then takes me anywhere from 2-4days to edit a vid - I wish I could do it more part time but can't. I like to try and give you guys a vid a week maybe if I went to 1 or 2 a month it would give us time to maybe do some???
      We'll see what I can do

    Hi, my dad and I just start to learn surfcasting. We have learn a lot from your videos, even my dad cannot speak English but he is enjoying them. Because it is quite dangerous to do rock fishing on Muriwai Beach, we decide to do some surfcasting. We still feel quite difficult to find the right spot to fish on Muriwai Beach and we are quite new as well. Just wondering when you are fishing few weeks later, can we join you, so we can learn some tips to find some good fishing spots. Thanks a lot.

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi R W - yip fishing the rocks can be quite dangerous and if you do end up fishing them always where a life jacket - only fish it when swell is under a metre. I don't fish Muriwai a lot and only really do it when the weather and swell permits so is more a last minute decision to go. Do you drive the beach or are you only able to walk onto the beach from the car park to fish?
      Muriwai can be hard to fish due to the waves and currents but my best advice to you is only fish it under a metre swell with light winds or if stronger winds make sure it is off shore (Easterly, North East). You may have already seen this vid but it shows you a little more what to look for - czcams.com/video/zRSZlFe1ya4/video.html
      Fishing the low tide is a lot easier as the banks show up for you to see but you will only get a couple of hours to fish them most times - high tide spots are found where the waves break about 50-100mtrs out then die-away then reform again. This is showing you there is a hole or little channel so calm spots amongst the waves will hold fish. The low you will be able to see these holes so you can line them up with something on the land to know where to fish on the high.
      Hope this helps
      I don't get a lot of time to myself due to kids / work etc but at some stage I may try to put a trip together up Muriwai (you will need your own 4x4 ) to show people how I fish it and what I look for.

      @@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing Hi mate, haven't tried surf fishing in Muriwai as I'm new to this hobby. Will a small SUV suffice to drive there? What's the exact location and if you're going there this summer, can you let me know so I get to learn from your experience? Btw, my rods are not as long as what you're using in these vid, I think it's around 8" and I don't cast that far, so will that work?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  Před 3 lety +1

      @@STUPIDCZcams_HIDINGMSGS Muriwai is a very hard beach to fish if your not use to surfcasting, a small SUV maybe ok as long as it is 4WD. When surfcasting Muriwai you want off shore winds and less than a mtr swell - 8ft rod is a little to small - you can get away with a 12ft but 14-15 is best for out West.

      I don't fish a lot at the entrance so unsure how productive it is - the best thing to do if you want to flick a line out there is get a small swell go on the low tide travel light and try find a little channel to cast into somewhere near by, you should be able to find one close by - early morning or evening will give you the best chance.

      @@michaelmeares781 - cheers for the kind words. I mainly use a 3oz and a breakaway for Muriwai because of the strong cross curent and waves - sometimes move up to 5oz. I'm prob getting roughly 100-120mtr cast's but when fishing those channels at Muriwai most times you only need 30-50mtr cast depending if you want to fish the back of the sand bar your standing on or the front of the further out bar. I don't change hook size for either fish just fish 6-8/0 hooks. The Trev's have pretty big mouths and will swallow half a pille easy it's more the soft mouth they have can make difficult hook ups.

    Do you have a video on how to read a beach for the best fishing spots? Cheers.

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  Před 5 lety

      All beaches are a little different but the main things I look for are holes, gutters and channels. It's a little different on the East to the West as the West pretty much always has waves which will show you that deeper water.
      On the West the low tide is a lot easier to read for channels running parallel with the beach - you will see waves break on a sand bar anywhere from 50-100mtrs out then the white water will disappear as it hits that deeper water (channel or hole) then the wave will reform again as it hits an inside bank. Sometimes on the low you are able to stand or wade onto the lip of this bank (like in the video) and cast into that channel / hole where the white water died away. Holes are similar you will see a wave break then a section of that wave dies away as it goes over the hole or the wave will just bubble over it.
      Clean water on the east you want to look for that darker colored water and if there are any waves you look for the same as you do on the West coast....
