  • An "epic day" off the Bays trolling for Kings and a few Snaps to finish the day off on $5 gas
With us having a lot of fun last weekend trolling livies around the back of Tiri last weekend, Pea and I decided to head out off the Bays in the little tin to see if we could have just as much fun trolling Mac's just off the Bay. We got to the ramp around 9.00 and the plan was to do what we did last time and that was to anchor up, drop a berley and bring the Mac's to us - we had the little live bait bucket which is just the right size for the tin.
We fired up the OB and headed off in search for some livies - this spot is mins with in launching from the ramp. We dropped the pick and deployed the berley and once again it didn't take long for the livies to stat coming aboard, after about 5-10mins we had 10 in the bucket and seeing a few birds working just down from us we decided to pull the anchor and head of on our first little troll. I had had a livey in the water the whole time while catching Mac's, Pea set his up and dropped it down ready for the troll. Before I could get the anchor in Pea had something grab his livey, it felt like a King - they would of been attracted to the bait fish around our berley. He didn't manage to hook up but grabbing my rod line started to peel, I tightened up the drag and I was hooked up.
We hadn't even started our troll and we were onto our first King for the morning, it feel like a bad fish to. I thought at first maybe they were Hammers as we get a few of these this time of year off Torbay - but couple mins in I could tell it was a king. Breaking the surface it was a good fish for the Bays, although we do get bigger it was roughly that average size around 90cm we norm get off the Bays. With the birds still working just down from us we reset our livies and started our first troll, rounding the birds Pea was first to get hit and he was hooked up this time. I also got smashed but couple mins into the fight I dropped mine, Pea was still hooked up and it was another nice little Bays king to around 80cm. Having a good size on board already we decided to let this one go, a good 90cm fish gives us two plenty of meat.
We set up again and started our troll once again but by the time we were on the move the workup had made it's way into the reserve 100mtrs or so away, we trolled around for a while with no joy and having only one more livey in the bucket we decided to drop the pick and berley again. We were only able to get a couple more Mac's and with the workups being out of our reach we headed for Browns bay reef where there were a couple more little workups. We moved up and down between the two with a couple more hits on the livies. With no livies left we decided to finish the day off trying for a couple of Snaps to take home, nothing big we managed a quick 5-6 Snaps then seeing a big workup along the North side of Brownzy reef we pulled anchor and drifted through with me throwing a small stick and Pea on a 14grm jig. There were thousands of small bait fish (anchovies it looked like) with plenty of Kahawai and Kings feeding on them, pea caught a couple more Snaps and I was having fun with Kingfish chases but no joy on hookups.
It lasted a good 10mins of fun then died away - we called it a day until I noticed the big workup off Torbay had started up again. Being so close we full throttled down there and we started again, lots more baitfish, Kahawai and Kingi chases. Pea hooked up on the Snapper again and at last I hooked into a nice little King around 80cm, it quite cool catching them on my light stick bait gear. 5mins into my fight the line changed angles, the rod doubled over, line started to peel then "bang" she was all over as I got sharked.
It was awesome to finish the day off on what we started but a bugger to lose it to a shark - what an epic day we had up and down the bay. Burning only $5 gas, boating a couple of kings dropping a couple and a few Snaps for the bin, it just shows you don't have to spend the big bucks to have a great day and catch a good feed - sometimes the Bays can hold some fun surprises and best of all is sharing it with a mate....

How much line do you leave out the back for trolling the livies? And the wight of the ball sinker? Cheers!!

We are only in about 10mtrs and with the birds working the Kings will be from mid to the surface so we don't drop them to deep - if doing it arond structure then you want them as close as you can get to that structure. We troll roughly 3-4knots so you don't need to go to heavy - once again depending the depth you need them at and speed you are going. We were using 2 & 3oz ball sinkers.

Nice vid again jase, I’m still chasing the South Island snapper heading out thurs or Friday, I was out the sounds last Thursday and finally seen king fish swimming up and down the mussel rows seen 2 of them so that was exciting put on my red popper lure and cast over to them but not a strike then towed the lure up and down between the rows but nothing, everybody else started doing the same but nothing either so I did not feel to bad, but least I’m getting closer to hooking up so hopefully soon as you said patience and keep trying, anyway great vid again

Cheers man - yip they get some good Kings there I think - make sure to get a couple of different types of lures to throw and tow - different colors so you can change them around if your getting no action...
Is it deep enough to have a jig for them???
Sometimes if you anchor up and get a berley going they will make there way up the trail - throw a few little cubes of pillie down the trail then one with a hook in it - sometimes they will take a little cube...

this summer i hooked onto but didn't land 3 kings near tiri from shore each time with different landing hazards you cant let them run there cuz its so shallow and sharp does anyone have some tips on leader size i was using 40 pound and twice it cut like butter on the rocks less than 3 meters from me

Nice one man - not to good they got away with line and hooks in them but great to catch and even get to see them. When land-basing it is a lot different to in the boat for different reasons.
If your getting dusted like that you defiantly have to up your leader. You have to learn when and where you can get away with light leader and fishing the shallows around rocks you really can't. Losing three fish tells you that - you should try to take a few different weight leaders with you when land-basing. Even though heavy leader can be a bit over kill it helps you to at least land the fish and release it safely or keep what ever you intend to do with it.
Just like in the boat any structure a King can find it will head for it no matter what it is, they are well known dirty fighters and brutal on your tackle. In the boat I use no less than 80lb and up to 150lb if targeting them.
I take it you were maybe targeting them? or did you just luck hook into them? That happens a lot when snapper fishing you will hook into a King on your snapper gear and it can be just luck to land it at times. If you are just snapper fishing try and take a set that is heavier that will handle them so when you first get dusted or see Kings change up to the heavier gear.
