I'm a VtM player and had some thoughts about the broken glass Rod kept in his room, in the game each vampire is from a specific lineage or "clan" that have different powers and traits unique to them. Based off statements from people who were with Rod at this time about what powers he believed he had and the way he acted, I believe he based himself on the Malkavian clan. For context: Malkavians are said to be extremely unpredictable, and insane who have fits of rage and violence - Even in the VtM universe they are the outcasts and weirdoes and in the lore are said to very mentally ill and have broken lives before their "embrace" or transition into being vampire. The symbol of Clan Malkav is a broken mirror which symbolizes their shattered minds, and they mark their territory, or crime scenes in the form of leaving broken glass or shattered mirrors.
This is my theory as to why he kept broken glass in his mirror, its essentially the flag or symbol of the Clan he believed himself to be apart of.
I was just thinking the same thing! I also play vtm I'm new to it but my brain went straight to the different clans and I pulled my book out to see if there was a reference. I think this is a strong theory

One of the saddest parts of this story to me is that Sondra made a lot of sacrifices to take care of her son, even when she was so young and the circumstances so difficult, but in the end, it was something she herself brought into her son's life that doomed him.
As someone who has been repeatedly abused; physically, sexually and emotionally, some days it is enough that I did not grow up to identify as a vampire and abuse/brutalize other people. If you were abused and also are not a vampire…. I’m really proud of us today okay.

Broken glass has a lot of significance in Romani culture, if I’m not mistaken. I think it’s to ward off bad luck / spirits. Could also be used as a barrier to keep other energies from entering your space. I had a friend who would break glass outside their house before big events to keep bad luck away.

Definitely not putting aside anything he did, but it is very sad to see the trauma he endured and how he was brought up which was not his fault. I kept forgetting how young these kids were when they committed this horrible crime. I think Rod was set up for failure due to the instability and abuse from his family but it doesn’t excuse these acts. He definitely deserves to spend his life in prison.

It's really so crazy how different these stories are when told through different sets of eyes. I have a couple different favorite true crime CZcamsrs. Another just told this story and he said Heather wasn't convicted of anything and that the grandmother knew they were on the run for sure, wasn't just suspicious of something. Who knows what's accurate, I'm sure there's different info all over the place but it's just really interesting to hear different aspects from different story tellers. Apparently the vampire aspect is popular for Halloween though.

I remember this! It was really close to where I live, my mom actually worked in Murray when all this happened. Some of my friends knew them. It was a super weird time for everybody! Everybody's parents started taking away all our Anne Rice books and my mom tried to make me stop wearing black. But here I am, 44 and still wearing black.

I love this look so much and how I find out about loads of stories I hadn't heard of before.
I did my college sociology project on vampire subculture. I used to play Vampire Masquarade too. I added Rod and I think 4 other murderers who thought they were real vampires (not tied to Rod). It was fascinating.

Not to be a vampire lore nerd on main, but that's because original mirrors back in the day were backed with silver and silver as a pure metal supposedly doesn't interact well with the "unpure" or supernatural which is why silver bullets are effective weapons against werewolves and silver chains are effective weapons/defense against vampires. So a vampire would not appear in a silver-backed mirror. Of course, silver would oxidize and dull over time. Nowadays, mirrors are usually backed with aluminum because it's cheaper and doesn't oxidize the same and is still reflective. According to Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels and the TV show they inspired, True Blood, the "no reflection in the mirror" thing is something vampires made up so they would go undetected by humans because well... if you can see them in the mirror, clearly they're not a vampire! I find that an amusing take, but the silver backing on the mirror is much more feasible. Of course... "feasible" as far as lore regarding legends of fictional beings goes anyway. lol

I wanted to mention that Heather's sister begged the court to charge Heather too. She felt that Heather was also responsible.
Because she definitely is the whole plan to steal the car is wacko. Why would she need to leave the door unlocked for them to get in while her parents were home when she was going home couldn't she have just grabbed the keys or taken the car herself and pick them up she let them in there cuz she knew what was going to happen...

It's dark and storming outside- a gloomy September afternoon... this is a perfect day for MMM!! Just found this channel and I'm totally consumed with it.
I grew up in Eustis, FL where some of this takes place. They would do some of their "rituals" at the local cemetary a block from my house. My middle school boyfriend knew Rod, and my brother was close friends with Heather's older sister. Every time I hear this story on a larger outlet, it sends chills.
I grew up in eustis as well and I also lived in the neighborhood the crime took place at. Didn’t know this happened until years later though since I was a small child when it happened

I was born and live in Murray, my. Like you all, it’s so strange when cases hit so close to home. This is not the first time I have heard documentaries on this case. My dad even delivered the mail to his Moms for a couple years.

Ugh- this one was rough. Like Bailey often says when she covers their life story, I’m also not trying to garner sympathy for the accused. But Roderick’s life was set on just an abhorrent trajectory from day one. And yes, people can change & learn & grow. But sometimes circumstances truly are out of control. Again- NOT excusing the crimes. These kids (which they were) seemed like they were so beaten down by life. Can you imagine the internal pain they had that took them to these extremes? So many generations just destroyed here.
Yes the man responsible did not ever go to trial or anything for what he did to Rod and his family.
What's your point exactly ? Many children who have horrible childhoods also grew up to be perfectly normal.

He was my mom’s neighbor in high school. I remember her talking about it a little, but all I knew about was a group of people sharpening their teeth and acting like vampires 😳 She said she hung out with him for a little bit before he got into the vampire stuff and told me about neighborhood pets going missing. She grew up in Murray and I was born there
