Welcome back to another episode of Teachers Off Duty. Where KC Mack is joined by the dynamic duo Jay Yoder and Bri Richardson. Today, we're diving into the little-known, often hilarious skills that teachers possess - the ones that go far beyond lesson planning and grading.
Jay's up with a story about a chance encounter with a former student who credited him for career inspiration. He'll also spill the beans on our uncanny ability to read a room like a psychic and juggle tasks like a circus performer.
Bri's not far behind with her insights. Ever wondered how teachers manage to keep smiling through the chaos? Or why we'd make top-notch wedding planners? Bri's got the lowdown on our poker faces and party planning prowess.
And just when you thought it couldn't get any funnier, we’ll reveal why teachers could give professional interrogators a run for their money. Meanwhile, Jay will share why being open to reanalyzing teaching material and style is crucial - it’s not just about sticking to the script.
So, whether you're in the teaching trenches or just curious about the covert skills of your child's educator, this episode of Teachers Off Duty is your ticket to the funniest insights into teacher life. Tune in now and discover the unique talents that make teachers a breed apart.

I taught Finance to seniors. The first week of every year, once we were done with all the district-required rubbish, I would have several days of group/pair math review assignments. It let me get around and learn names and get to know students, but it had another perk: by that first Friday I knew who NOT to seat near one another. The following week the seating chart would be made and they were stunned...and that's what I told them what had gone down. They never snitched on me to the students coming in the next year, either. And two interruptions that used to make we want to break windows: 1) the class phone ringing with the attendance clerk saying a parent was taking a student out of class, usually for something useful like getting their nails done, and 2) the intercom with a low-level admin who would start with, "Teachers please excuse this interruption." Instant pandemonium. My students used to laugh at my reaction and the face I would put on...at least we could make it humorous.

Watching the three of you together makes me happy, The perfect team of comedians, please keep making content together, we deserve to watch the three of you after a long week of school/work. You make my Sundays and help me get ready for a week of work/school.
The "teacher face" is the most important one that we need to have. Why? Well simply because if the students know how you are feeling, then they will stop their nonsense. They know that they need to quit whatever they are doing of else they will be in trouble with you. LEARNING how to SMILE at all times is also a tough one (one of the reasons why I actually liked wearing the COVID masks), no matter what, do not show what you are really feeling at all times, if you do, you know that they (students) will come after you (they will roast you). Interruptions, boy do we get interrupted on a daily basis. Administrators, remember when you come into a classroom, come in, check that we really are doing our job and then leave, the kids think that we are in trouble with the administration if you stay. After they leave the will comment "What did you do? Why are they checking up on you?, UUUUUUU you in trouble!!"
As far as the students making comments on how you are dressed, that happened to me this week. I came in dressed in a UNC colored jacket, and I was wearing black shoes. (Now mind you, I teach in a high school) A student I had sent outside to take a breather, as I went to go get him asked me "Are you feeling o.k?" I said "yes, why are you asking?" He then stated that I was not matching, "You are wearing black Nike shoes, and I know you have fashion sense and you should be wearing your UNC Dunks, I know you have some" Then not thinking I stated, "Oh sorry I forgot my shoes on my couch", every student immediately stared at my feet, thinking that I was not wearing shoes at all. Students notice everything, especially when they are in high school, they are not shaming you (or maybe they are), they just wonder why? They have so many whys, and the whys are not even about the subject matter you are trying to teach them, it is more about your personal life. I want to consider myself a "Good Teacher" but at times there are always doubts, at times we need that nice comment coming from a student or a parent.
School lunches, we are not allowed to buy school lunches any more, our school currently sells (gives away) lunches only to the students, Every since COVID started, every student is allowed to get a free lunch, even if they do not qualify for it. I guess something good came out of COVID, the only good thing. As far as lunch, I eat so fast that people think I am from another planet. Friends wonder how I am able to do that, when you are on a schedule during the week, you forget that you can slow down when out with friends and family. I finish food within a minutes, if I have to do so, in order to keep to what you can do during a lunch break, then when enjoying meal with those you love, you forget and they think you are strange.
Acting, we all have to be award winning actors! No matter what the situation might be, you have to act in front of students. You do this in order to survive a day at work in a school.
Please we need the three of you together all of the time!!! You make out work week possible❤❤❤

I’m in my 30’s and have been teaching Preschool-now TK/Kinder for 12 years total and have to say that teaching has made me a better parent, hands down. Understanding child development and working with ages 2-10 throughout my career has been paramount in providing me with the proper skills and language to help my child effectively on a day to day basis. You mentioned whether parents are better teachers, and I personally feel like teaching first prepared me to be an excellent parent. Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from perfect, but I do feel like my teaching experiences and relationships with my students have made me a better human being in addition to being a better mom.

This is my 25th school year, almost 18yrs at the same elementary school now (yes, I started in August '98 and I'm 44 next month lol). I'm totally the crazy and silly school secretary. Thanks to my mom, who is a retired SPED educator, I've learned from a young age how to handle the severe behaviors, how to reign in the non-verbal autistic kiddos who have escaped the classroom, get any student to do work next to me, and I can still give praise to all of them (even if it's just something small) and they know how much I love them even when they are beyond naughty. I also buy the best prize box toys and super cool water bottle stickers with my tiny paycheck, because I'm also not above bribing when it's needed and the mom look doesn't work (you know who those feral kids are!)🤷‍♀️😂

I am a teacher without kids, and I will say that I love every child and treat them as I would if they were mine. I have always been this way. I have 30 nieces and nephews, and I've cared for a lot of them through my childhood, so I have always been motherly.

As a teacher who could never have a child of my own, I feel like I treat all my students as if they were my own. My students may get a little spoiled. I have had several students who have written to me or recognized me as their favorite teacher as they leave high school. I am a kindergarten teacher so that has to carry over for a while.
