For me it's the second riff from Night's Blood (the first one where they use tremolo playing). In my opinion, that riff is the single best musical description of winter anyone has ever written.
Probably the verse riff of "I" off of Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal". That intentional terrible mix makes the guitars feel like razorblades in your ears, and the riff is just so simple and awesome!
I use to get drunk listening to Panzerfaust. To me,the first three songs are different genres. And I cant be the only one who really likes Sno Og Granskog, can I? I doesn't fit but hell if it isnt awesome.
Life Eternal by Mayhem (main riff) Riff at about 3:52 of Vetrarnott by Enslaved I Am The Black Wizards by Emperor Black Horizons by Dissection (Chorus riff) Transylvanian Hunger by Darkthrone Moonspell Rites by Behemoth Withstand The Fall Of Time by Immortal (Intro riff and riff at about 3:03) Those were just the first few I could think of off the top of my head
Burzum - My Journey To The Stars, the riff at 1.40 Burzum - Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen, the riff at 5.55 Burzum - Stemmen Fra Tårnet, the riff at 0.55 Isengard - Thornspawn Chalice, the last riff Satyricon - The Dark Castle In The Deep Forest, the last riff Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times, the riff at 1.52 Gorgoroth - Gorgoroth, the first riff Gorgoroth - Open The Gates, the first riff Gorgoroth - Ødeleggelse Og Undergang, the second riff Darkthrone - En Vind Av Sorg, the second riff Darkthrone - Graven Takeheimens Saler, the first riff Darkthrone - Natassja in Eternal Sleep, the first riff Darkthrone - To Walk the Infernal Fields, the riff at 1.35 Ulver - Hymn I, the riff at 2.21 Ulver - Hymn II, the second riff at 0.50 Immortal - Pure Holocaust, the Star Wars riff Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter, the riff at 3.35 Dissection - Soulreaper, chorus riff Dissection - Thorns Of Crimson Death, the riff at 0.28 Marduk - Glorification Of The Black God, the riff at 2.35 Marduk - Wolves, the riff at 3.05 Inquisition - Empire Of Luciferian Race, the riff at 3.21 Dimmu Borgir - Over Bleknede Blaner Til Dommedag, the riff at 1.19 Judas Iscariot - Before A Circle Of Darkness, the second riff Grausamkeit - Something About Spacebase, the third riff Emperor - With Strength I Burn, the riff at 5.49 Emperor - Inno A Satana, the second & third riff Dark Funeral - My Dark Desires, the third riff Abigor - Eerie Constellation, the first riff Carpathian Forest - Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern, the riff at 2.00 Did I need to choose just one? 😅
I LOVE the chorus riff from Mayhem's Funeral Fog. Especially the part right after Attila says "FOG!" Makes me bang my head so hard I almost break my neck every time.
"Over Fjell Og Gjennom Torner". Hearing it around the age of 13 just before getting a guitar. One of the first songs I learned. Still rip it off 20 years later.
Many great riffs in black metal. One that comes to mind is the opening riff from Burzum's "Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament". It's the two most simplest power chords (B and C on the fifth string) playing back and forth, and that too on standard tuning. The progression in "Hvis Lysett Tar Oss" by Burzum is also beautiful. Another one is the closing riff from "Prosperity and Beauty" by Gorgoroth. One of the best moments in black metal history was when that song was played during Wacken Open Air 2008, at the center of Europe. The people who got to see that were lucky.
The intro to Lord Belial's "Realm of a Thousand Burning Souls Part 1" on their album "Enter the Moonlight Gate". It makes me want to split the sky with a hammer 🤘
That is so difficult to say. From "Graven Takeheimens Saler" the intro riff is actually very strong as well, but I seriously would need to think a few days about the greatest Black Metal riff of all time.
a few from Windir coming to mind -- Mørket Sin Fyrste, Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet, Journey to the End Odinist by Blut Aus Nord is another good one
Blut aus nord have many amazing riffs, odinist is one of themi agree . Also the complexity of :the work which transforms God is from another world but i prefer the oldest albums like memoria vetusta oldschool bm riffs😊
for me the greatest black metal riffs are Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger main riff as well as the riff at 2:04 in Skald Av Satans Sol Vothana's Sư chém giết (the entire song is a masterpiece) and Hoang Gia I Leviathan's Sardoniscorn Grand Belial's Key On a Mule Rides the Swindler Abyssic Hate's Suicidal Emotions Totale Vernichtung's Die Schlacht and can't forget Lost Wisdom, Dunkelheit and Det Som Engang Var from Burzum!
My latest lose-my-absolute-shit-in-the-car riff has probably been the one closing out "The Path of Realisation" by Albionic Hermeticism. Honestly, that whole album (Psalms to the Father) is full-to-the-brim with riffy goodness, and their collab album with Ynkleudherhenavogyon also brings some major heat.
I find that Bvrzvm's Jesu Død (opening riff), Darkthrone's En Vind Av Sorg (2nd riff), and Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (half way riff) are among my favourite riffs.
Top 5 1. Immortal- Withstand the fall of time 2. Dissection- nights blood after the acoustic 3. Taake- Doedskvad pt 2 4. Satyricon- mother north 5. Wolves in the throne room- I will lay down..
the nights blood after the acoustic part is actually that accoustic part but played on electric amplifier. and it seems it was written not by notdveidt but by zweetslot. one of my fav riffs too
Man. I have quite a bit to choose from: Ulver-hymn 3,after the first bit of vocals, and repeated once more later. Borknagar-Origin,the bit after "man is greater than a microbe." Ivar Bjornsson and Einar Selvik-Makta Og Vanera For All Tid,the verse riff. Darkthrone-Utterst I Livet, the first riff. Also by Darkthrone, the first riff on Majestic Desolate Eye. Enslaved-In Times, the riff near the end. Satyricon-Du Som Hater Gud,the bit in the middle or so. Also have to mention Darkthrone again....the end riff of Kathaarian Life Code...when I first heard it,it made my hairs stand up. Hell yea. 🤘
Mine is almost certainly I am the Black Wizards by Emperor. I play it all the time as a tremolo picking exercise, and it’s just a classic. Inquisition is up there too with just about any riff Dagon has written.
solid choice as with several early 90s Dark Throne songs. However, I would pick the riff(s) from Eerie Howling Winds or Det Glemte Riket from the Ancient Svartalheim album.
Opening riff from “Yekteniya I” for me. Epic, melodic, dark. The riff that brought me into black metal and I haven’t left since. Still appreciate all kinds of music and other metal, but this riff made me realize black metal is for me.
For me it is definitely in my top ten BM riffs list, along with Transilvanian Hunger and Slottet I det fjerne. Also The Riffs from Satyricon's Mother North and Mayhem's Freezing moons intro are excellent. And don't forget Dissection's Nights blood and Emperor's I am the Black wizards
"striborg - beneath the fields of rapacious blood" to me its all about cold black atmosphere and the first time i heard this riff it was like a witchcraft for me and til this day it still gives me the same eerie feeling
Your an awesome teacher simon I've picked up the guitar recently and so far learn about 5 songs by watching you keep it up and can u do more lessons on candlemass 🤘🏻
My favorite, personally, is the chorus riff of Skald Av Satans Sol by Darkthrone. It starts around the 2 min mark. It is genuinely just the musical embodiment of winter and evil. Runner up would be the intro riff to Wolf And Passion by Ulver.
On the Kvist song MM Lekam... the riff that's perceeded by these dissonant organs is one of the nastiest black metal riffs I've heard. The first riff of Unleashed Axe-Age and the turn-around riff on Into the Infinity of Thoughts are also close contenders
There's a couple: the tremelo riff on Thorns of Crimson Death, which makes me picture freezing rain pouring down. Also the "chorus" riff on Exercise in Futility I; feels like triumphing in a meaningless battle.
I meen my favourite black metal band are dissection and the riffs on nights blood and thorns of crimson death would be up there (take your picks which riff those songs are packed full of great riffs), but in terms of capturing the pure atmosphere of black metal and everything I would say the main riff from jesu tod by Burzum. If someone was to ask me about black metal not knowing anything about it I would show them that riff and song as a whole.
Nice vid, for me it's probably jesus dod riff at the beginning, but i mean the whole song is absolutely sick. And a riff that I especially love is Nargaroth's Sommer at about 9.20 min in. Catchy riff along with the blast beats is so raw and cold, love it.
Close between Jesus' Tod since it was the first I ever heard and all of the riffs in My Journey to the Stars Burzum riffs in general are some of my favourites in BM.
As much I love Darkthrone...my personal favorite black metal riff would have to be Cosmic Keys to My Creations and Times. \m/ Regardless, awesome video!
I know what sequence ur talking about.... it was badass no doubt. But it sounds similar to sequences I've heard in some melodeath and reminds me of a riff from an annihilator song
So many great answers in this comment section!!
Song name pls?
The first 1:30 of "Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny" by Dimmu Borgir. Straight up savage riff with incredible lyrics
For me it's the second riff from Night's Blood (the first one where they use tremolo playing). In my opinion, that riff is the single best musical description of winter anyone has ever written.
The whole album is fuckin 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Personally, I prefer the third riff, but that tremolo picking is seriously badass
It's 100% great!
"NIGHT HAUNTS....AND EVIL LURKS....IN EVERY CORNER"
As a Floridian, I definitely dont know Winter. But I agree on that part being badass. Makes me nostalgic for when I first got that album in 2001.
Probably the verse riff of "I" off of Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal". That intentional terrible mix makes the guitars feel like razorblades in your ears, and the riff is just so simple and awesome!
Mother North has to be up there for me. Supremely catchy, yet still mesmerizingly atmospheric and dark.
The main riff from A Fine Day to Die never goes wrong
It's always hard to pick a best of. Especially when we talk about Darkthrone. In my opinion "En Vind Av Sorg" is king
I love ”Hans Siste Vinter”, also ”Quintessence” is so simple but soooooo good.
@@arrebarre900 True. Panzerfaust is a killer
I use to get drunk listening to Panzerfaust. To me,the first three songs are different genres. And I cant be the only one who really likes Sno Og Granskog, can I? I doesn't fit but hell if it isnt awesome.
Life Eternal by Mayhem (main riff)
Riff at about 3:52 of Vetrarnott by Enslaved
I Am The Black Wizards by Emperor
Black Horizons by Dissection (Chorus riff)
Transylvanian Hunger by Darkthrone
Moonspell Rites by Behemoth
Withstand The Fall Of Time by Immortal (Intro riff and riff at about 3:03)
Those were just the first few I could think of off the top of my head
I Am THe Black Wizards is absolutely vile. So fucking good.

Did I need to choose just one? 😅
I can't forget how "Ea, Lord of the Depths" made me feel (and still does)
I LOVE the chorus riff from Mayhem's Funeral Fog. Especially the part right after Attila says "FOG!"
Makes me bang my head so hard I almost break my neck every time.
Dissection - The Somberlain🤫🤘
I love The Somberlain, the riff is dynamic enough to not get repetitive, but still beautifully strung together.
"Over Fjell Og Gjennom Torner". Hearing it around the age of 13 just before getting a guitar. One of the first songs I learned. Still rip it off 20 years later.
That song is short but very haunting.
the riffs from En As I Dype Skogen are my favorite. transilvanian hunger is a masterclass on perfect bm riffs
Jesus' Tod's riffing in the middle section starting at 3:44. Your pick is great too.
Was going to comment this myself, the whole verse part is blissful
Varg is the man
The verse riff of Thus Spake the Nightspirit by Emperor
"this is the song that has almost made me crash my car the most"
absolute donny. true metalhead. You know. You absolutely know \m/

That whole album has awesome riffs. Its underrated thats for certain.
DT's - 'Quintessence' and the opening of 'Hate them'. HANDS DOWN!
Noregsgard bcs of the vocals
Wow, Simon! Those two guitar parts blend over each other so beautifully! I love beautiful/emotional Darkthrone Black Metal Riffs!
Simon. You are best Black Metal Teacher on CZcams.
For sure, you are just all time teach me something new and dark... Respect.
My fav riff is the main one of transilvanian hunger, I love the drone notes with the melody on top
Burzum - Glemselens Elv is something special for me
Also Cradle of filth Beauty slept in Sodom - the middle part -
I’d say Withstand the Fall of Time by Immortal has some of the best black metal riffs ever made in one song.
That is so difficult to say. From "Graven Takeheimens Saler" the intro riff is actually very strong as well, but I seriously would need to think a few days about the greatest Black Metal riff of all time.
We dont want ur disography 👿 give us one.... the one that stands out immediate memory
oh yes that whole album is full of absolutely gorgeous harmonies, that's kind of the essence of the album and why I revisit it all the time
a few from Windir coming to mind -- Mørket Sin Fyrste, Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet, Journey to the End
Odinist by Blut Aus Nord is another good one
Blut aus nord have many amazing riffs, odinist is one of themi agree .
Also the complexity of :the work which transforms God is from another world but i prefer the oldest albums like memoria vetusta oldschool bm riffs😊
for me the greatest black metal riffs are
Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger main riff as well as the riff at 2:04 in Skald Av Satans Sol
Vothana's Sư chém giết (the entire song is a masterpiece) and Hoang Gia I
Leviathan's Sardoniscorn
Grand Belial's Key On a Mule Rides the Swindler
Abyssic Hate's Suicidal Emotions
Totale Vernichtung's Die Schlacht
and can't forget Lost Wisdom, Dunkelheit and Det Som Engang Var from Burzum!
Freezing Moon intro riff is most memorable black metal riff (and the best).
Graven Takeheimens Saler is a clasic: simple, dark ... very emotional. My favourite bm riff is Ex Cathedra by Wolves in the Throne Room
I fell in love with the second riff of Branikald - Жать Врагу instantly and it still gives me feelings
Withstand The Fall Of Time by Immortal always gets me going
It's a very meditative riff. Simple yet very effective
Finally someone mentions these amazing bands
I find that Bvrzvm's Jesu Død (opening riff), Darkthrone's En Vind Av Sorg (2nd riff), and Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (half way riff) are among my favourite riffs.
Top 5
1. Immortal- Withstand the fall of time
2. Dissection- nights blood after the acoustic
3. Taake- Doedskvad pt 2
4. Satyricon- mother north
5. Wolves in the throne room- I will lay down..
the nights blood after the acoustic part is actually that accoustic part but played on electric amplifier. and it seems it was written not by notdveidt but by zweetslot. one of my fav riffs too
Any riff from Unhallowed. The Christraping Black Metal riff continuously captivates me with its brutal simplicity
Mother North!! it's The Black Metal Anthem!
Jesus tod - burzum.
Just this haunting, infectious sequence that absolutely epitomises the genre at it's best.
Hard to say but the main riff of God Of The Darkest Dawn by Sargeist and Hans Siste Vinter from DarkThrone are on top for me,
Nice pick on that Sargeist riff. I love that one!
Man. I have quite a bit to choose from:
Ulver-hymn 3,after the first bit of vocals, and repeated once more later.
Borknagar-Origin,the bit after "man is greater than a microbe."
Ivar Bjornsson and Einar Selvik-Makta Og Vanera For All Tid,the verse riff.
Either the ending of I troldskog faren vild or anything from Opeth's first album. Dawn's slaughtersun is also incredible
I Am the Black Wizards - Emperor, damn killer riff, my favourite
solid choice as with several early 90s Dark Throne songs. However, I would pick the riff(s) from Eerie Howling Winds or Det Glemte Riket from the Ancient Svartalheim album.
Dissection - Thorns of Crimson death, that short riff just before the acoustic break as the solo kicks in
I just discovered a band that gets 40 listeners monthly. The song is called HYMNR-Part II go ahead and have a listen that riff is awesome.
That opening riff is bad-ass
Judas Iscariot's Gaze Upon Heaven in Flames is my favorite black metal riff.
The Red Heifer by Grand Belial’s Key. Riff begins at 5:24.
That was good! Peste Noire has a lot of great riffs as well.
Peste noire are nazis dude ...
@@mariuslepont4505 Would that make their riffs somehow not great?
Thank you for this cover song
Opening riff from “Yekteniya I” for me. Epic, melodic, dark. The riff that brought me into black metal and I haven’t left since.
Still appreciate all kinds of music and other metal, but this riff made me realize black metal is for me.
this riff is exactly the same as vobiscum satanas from dark funeral min 1.35
Yep, and i dare say Dark Funeral did a fantastic job with blending in the maniacal vocals!
Yeah, Dark Funeral have a habit of recycling other bands' stuff.
the ending bit of crushing the scepter by gorgoroth
Jesus Tod riff and song honestly feels like essence of metal music
Blackened by metellica
😂
🤣👏🏻
For me it is definitely in my top ten BM riffs list, along with Transilvanian Hunger and Slottet I det fjerne. Also The Riffs from Satyricon's Mother North and Mayhem's Freezing moons intro are excellent. And don't forget Dissection's Nights blood and Emperor's I am the Black wizards

Dark Funeral - Where Shadows Forever Reign
One of my absolute favorites. 🤘
one of the best for sure!! lml
There's a couple: the tremelo riff on Thorns of Crimson Death, which makes me picture freezing rain pouring down. Also the "chorus" riff on Exercise in Futility I; feels like triumphing in a meaningless battle.
Bathory - Enter The Eternal Fire 🤘🍻🔥🔥🔥 guitar lesson
This right here, what are all these other people smoking?
Awesome..
Jesu Tod
idk its hard to choose but i would go with Nargaroth seven tears are flowing to the river, the distortion parts.
Emperor - I am the black wizards ,lead melody at the end
Any of Grand Belial's Keys riffs
I meen my favourite black metal band are dissection and the riffs on nights blood and thorns of crimson death would be up there (take your picks which riff those songs are packed full of great riffs), but in terms of capturing the pure atmosphere of black metal and everything I would say the main riff from jesu tod by Burzum. THIS
The first two albums from Dissection are just pure magic! 🖤
By the way, this riff can be heard in the composition "Vobiscum Satanas" by Dark Funeral.
The riff at the tempo change in Under a Funeral Moon
What is the song playing before you start playing the riff, from the start of the video?
For me it’s I am the Black Wizards by Emperor. That main riff and also when it’s slowed down at the end of the song!
The opening riff to In Grauenhaft by Totale Vernichtung is my favorite at the moment.
Yeah thats pretty solid 🤘🏻👍 lot of Horna riffs really stick for me aswell
I notice the way your picking hand kind of scoots forward and backwards, do you find that helps long tremolo picked riffs be less strenuous?
I think it's more of a counting on the beat kind of thing....
Nice vid, for me it's probably jesus dod riff at the beginning, but i mean the whole song is absolutely sick. And a riff that I especially love is Nargaroth's Sommer at about 9.20 min in. Catchy riff along with the blast beats is so raw and cold, love it.
Hmm 🤔 very thought provoking Simon. I would have to say that main riff in Emperor’s I Am The Black Wizards is up there some place for me
In the shadow of the horns
Yes, that's a good one. I like also a Marduk riff in the song Kaziklu bey, it's awesome.
"First Point of Aries" by Mare Cognitum off the album Luminiferous Aether. He makes my favorite black metal, period.
That dancey riff in "Foul Parody of The Lord's Supper" 😘👌
Close between Jesus' Tod since it was the first I ever heard and all of the riffs in My Journey to the Stars
Burzum riffs in general are some of my favourites in BM.
The ending riff in Thornspawn Chalice.
Isengard 💪.
Some parts of Moribund Oblivion - Ruins of Karashehr is one of my favorite black metal riffs.
Ravnajuv from Total Death is the one that always gets me
So hard to pick just one but I like Hvite Krists Død by Satyricon and Feeble Screams from Forests Unknown by Burzum.
burzum a lost forgotten sad spirit's every riff is awesome
Where cold winds blow !
Hehe, this is my favourite riff, also. What about latest Darkthrone album? They changed the sound. 😊
As much I love Darkthrone...my personal favorite black metal riff would have to be Cosmic Keys to My Creations and Times. \m/
Regardless, awesome video!
Im going to have to go with the opening riff of ye entrancemperium...total classic and hard to beat.
Taake - Hordalands Doedskvad Pt.7 (5:25) (my favorite)
Falkenbach - Laeknishendr (starting riff)
Enslaved - Vetranott (3:50)
Moonsorrow - Mimisbrunn (13:25s)
One by one immortal
Opening riff to Empire of Suffering, by Sargeist.
Black Seeds on Virgin Soil by Old Man's Child. Man, that part after the first chorus around minute 2.10 sounds so epic and hellish!! 🔥🔥🔥
I know what sequence ur talking about.... it was badass no doubt. But it sounds similar to sequences I've heard in some melodeath and reminds me of a riff from an annihilator song
