In the episode where Pearl trains Connie, Garnet tells Steven that during the war Pearl would defend Rose over logic and reason and it's because she couldn't let her get poofed or everybody would see her gem

@@ShurouInu Exactly! I really dislike it when people refer to Pearl as a slave. It was so clear that Rose didn't treat Pearl as a slave and actively told her that she isn't bound to her anymore and constantly encouraged her to follow her own path. It's especially evident with Pearl lines like "Why can't you just let me do this for you Rose?!" which tell us that Rose discouraged blind devotion from Pearl. At that point Pearl wasn't following Rose out of obligation but out of love. For people to call it a slave/master dynamic is just incredibly reductive and doesn't encapsulate the nuances of their relationship. It just shows a severe lack of understanding of the characters and their relationships to each other.

When gems reform, they cycle through their previous forms before materializing. When White Diamond pulls out Steven’s gem, he goes through Pink Diamond, then Rose. This is how we know that the form of Rose was actually a regeneration form for Pink, not just shape shifting.
I still remember to this day the day this episode came out, I was running across my house screaming calling all my friends who also watched the show to go watch the new episode lol... This episode changed everything, the "Rose is Pink Diamond" theory was something that people considered very early on like in season 2 but after that became the primal "joke theory" of the fandom because of how outlandish it was, how many plotholes it had etc and everybody used it to mock Steven Universe theorists, so when it actually came true everyone was losing their minds

Pearls forms in nature in layers, so it makes sense the part of the pearl inside other pearls.
This means that Steven is a diamond.
This explains why Steven has so much powers and himself being so powerful and strong. And this also explains why Pearl hasn’t shapeshifted in any instance since “shattering” Pink Diamond.
Men this is THE best episode of SU, I remember when I was and what was doing when this episode came out, the shock in my face. There was theories since the second season that Rose was Pink but everyone in the fanbase thought it was stupid and impossible, but if you pay attention there’s clues in a lot of episodes. Can’t wait for next episodes, and then the movie and Future, I’m going to cry all day watching this episodes again 😭

woah. the detail about pearls forming in layers is so interesting. I'm glad the creators used that. It also was a good way to show how complicated the situation with Rose and Pearl was.

While I agree that this is a decent enough explanation on paper, when you really stop and look at it, I still don't think it makes too much sense. Steven/Rose/Pink has a disproportionately high number of powers, even when compared to the other Diamonds.
Yellow Diamond really only has the electricity thing (until Future, but no spoilers here).
Blue can cause nearby Gems to cry.
And then we look at Steven/Rose/Pink, who has:
- The Shield (but that's a given, seeing as how most other Gems have a weapon).
- The Bubble (with optional spikes and also that thing he did to save Eyeball in the season 3 finale).
- Healing tears/spit (that can also make sentient plants)
- Floating/slow fall
- Dream walking (and, by way of that, possession)
- That thing in Steven Universe Future that I won't mention because of spoilers.
There might be more, but that's all I can remember.
(And I'm not going to talk in-depth about White because, again, no spoilers, but even she only has the one power.)
I like this show quite a lot; I really do. But it still has many flaws, and I believe Steven's overpowered nature is one of them.

Remember Steven Tag? When Amethyst and Garnet were all over playing it, Pearl absolutely refused when Amethyst teased her. This is why.
It was so obvious in hindsight. All the signs were there. Bismuth said Rose's sword couldn't shatter. Pearl covered her mouth a lot. This show is so good.

Fans had spent so long theorizing that (1) Rose faked her shattering of Pink Diamond, (2) that Pearl was the one who shattered Pink Diamond, and (3) that Rose was actually Pink in disguise. It still came as a shock that all three of those were true.
Pink Diamond is, at the most basic level, a metaphor for generational trauma. Her predecessor instilled an inherently evil set of values into her generation and (as is often the case in real life) since she was the youngest, she was the best equipped to rebel once she discovered a better way. However, her situation didn't allow for a total overhaul of the system she was raised in (despite her best efforts), so she had to do something drastic in order to bring about the change she thought was necessary. Enter Rose Quartz, the "first generation" of a better way. She had no precedent to go off of and no history to learn from, so everything she did was pretty much an off-the-cuff decision only informed by her not wanting things to stay the same. Naturally that meant that many of her decisions did not turn out well, but she felt she had to stand by them because to do otherwise would be the same as admitting her motivations were wrong, which she wouldn't allow herself to do. That allowed her to stabilize the chaos caused by her initial transformation, but it wasn't enough to keep the situation from going back to how it was before, so she had to make another drastic transformation in order to finish what she started. She learned from the first time that she alone did not have what was needed in order to fully achieve her dream, so she took what she learned from homeworld and the rebellion, and combined it with humanity's ability to adapt and change - and became Steven. A lot of what she did wasn't fair to those around her, least of all to Steven, but ultimately it was their shared belief in her cause that allowed them to achieve the impossible in the end. Were all of her actions "good"? No, in fact I would say the majority caused undue suffering to her friends & allies. But was she "evil"? Of course not. She was just Pink. Just Rose. Just someone who saw that things weren't right, and had the motivation & the means to change them.
thank fucking god I'm not the only one who gets this. the "pink diamond was pure evil and ruined everyone's lives" rhetoric that so many SU haters use to this day shows such a low level of media literacy that it's baffling.
Finally a fair defense of pink/rose.
She was not always the best person but she was never evil and wanted to the best for everyone and tried her best to make that happen and make those changes, meanwhile growing and changing herself. It takes a long time to break out of a mindset you grew up with like the diamonds enforce.

Also you can see a Pink Diamond on Pearl's suit in the episode where they try to reach space

I think the pearl getting poofed was just pearl being too eager to literally die for rose but I never really thought about it the way u said
woooow. just got that lol. That makes sense. So she wanted to protect Rose, but also her secret. That may also contribute to how she was teaching Connie to protect Steven. Like maybe, since nobody knew if Steven could poof and reform, there would always be someone to sacrifice themselves even if Pearl isn't there. I hope that point makes sense.

BROOOOOOO Reunited is still such a goated episode. that episode was the SU equivalent of a bomb going off
I think its my favorite episode of SU. I mean, *almost* all the Crystal Gems got to shine (all accept Peridot which still makes me mad) but overall, it was GREAT!
This explains why Steven has so many powers, healing, bubble shield, regular shield, floating, dream walking etc. If you think about it most gems typically have one power or thing they are good at, but Stevens powers always felt kinda op because he was half Diamond.
I was actually thinking about this when I was watching a couple or reactions back. In retrospect, it should've been a huge indicator as to why Steven/Rose had so many powers compared to normal gems.
In light of the revelation in A Single Pale Rose, I'd like to make a list of all foreshadowing/interesting info to look back into with this revelation in mind.
- in Jungle Moon, when Steven and Connie got stranded, they were both having a shared dream about their moms
- Pearl's space uniform in the season 1 episode where she tries to take Steven to space has a pink diamond symbol in it, much life homeworld gem's uniforms which indicate what diamond they belong to
- Since she received an order from her Diamond to not speak of what happened (with Pink covering her mouth when giving it), every time she got close to talking about anything relating to it or hears about it, she unwillingly covered her own mouth violently, you can notice that in a bunch of other episodes (when eyeball Ruby tells Steven that Pink was shattered, when Pearl was trying to comfort Steven when Connie wasn't talking to him, when Steven turned himself in to Aquamarine, etc). Poor Pearl was physically bound from ever revealing their secret and the weight of it all was a lot to bear
- Pearl seems much more justified in episodes like "Rose's Scabbard" when we look back at it now, when she said "You never had what we had" and etc. It's all much more understandable now. Not only were they lovers, but she was the only person in the world who truly knew everything about Rose/Pink and knew the truth about what happened
- Pearl never shapeshifts because she's traumatized after doing it for their fake shattering of Pink Diamond, taht's why we never saw her shapeshift in the show
- She knew about the moon base and the zoo, and (I'll say this knowing that you already finished the main series on Patreon) the moon base was originally Pink's, to observe the colonization of Earth. The diamonds always make bases on the moons of the planets that they're colonizing (like the one seen in Jungle Moon, when Steven and Connie got stranded on that moon of that planet colonized by Yellow, where they had that dream)
- Steven/Rose were too strong to simply be a quartz, with healing tears, astral projection, plants, a bubble, etc and all of that not counting Rose's main weapon- her shield. So it makes much more sense for Steven/Rose to be a Diamond
- The lyrics of the song "Love Like You" which are theorized to be from Rose's POV : "I always thought I might be bad, now I know that it's true, cause I think you're so good' and I'm nothing like you"
- In "Mr Greg", during the "Both of You" song that Steven sings in the piano for Greg and Pearl, Greg is lighted in Yellow and Pearl in Blue, and Steven in Pink, giving double meaning both to Steven relationship with Pearl and Greg and Pink's relationship with Yellow and Blue, "You both love me and I love both of you”
- In “Three Gems and a Baby”, the flashback episode to when Steven was a baby, when Greg opens Steven’s onesie where his gem is so it can “breathe”, the unbuttoned hole forms a diamond around his gem
- The attorney gem during the trial was correct! Only a Diamond could've done this and pulled it off, and she was right! It was an inside job, just not in the way that we were expecting
- Also during the trial, Blue said that Rose's sword was what shattered Pink, but that wouldn't make any sense because during Bismuth's first episode she revealed that the sword could only break the physical form of a gem but never shatter the gem itself, so that didn't make any sense
- The different Pearls inside Pearl represent the layers of her subconscious mind. Pearl told Steven to go inside her Pearl because it was the only way for him to know the truth, she physically wasn’t able to tell him as much as she wanted to, having to speak in “code” in this episode : “there are some things I *can’t* tell you, but what I *can* tell you is that I need my phone”
- When Fluorite said “Don’t be silly- Rose Quartz isn’t real” she was technically right. (Our) Rose Quartz was never real. She was just Pink Diamond’s alter ego.
This show is simply brilliant. This episode changed everything.
Also in the backstory episode where Garnet tells the story of rose to the off-colors their faces are all obscured because it didnt actually happen but when she recalls actual events she experienced we get to see their faces instead

At every turn I was so ready for you to have the "OMF ROSE = PINK" moment and it made me ugly laugh sooo loud when it finally happened at the end of the episode lmao. Things make a HUGE amount if sense now though when you look back at how Rose's actions are described by the gems.

This show is so genius when you realize that a lot of the facts and abilities of the gems are based on real life gemstones, and in real life only a diamond can cut diamond. And remember Bismuth described that she made Rose's sword to never be able to damage the gem itself, thus making the breaking point later on.

I'm honestly really glad Steven said in the end "Mom was pink diamond" because I was also sooo confused and only then was I freaking out like crazy XD Rebecca knows how to write a story. She knew damn well that we'd be confused as hell 😂

pearls backstory is one of the saddest, everything she did she did it for rose, and lets be honest rose didnt treat her like she treated garnet or bismuth, she knew how strong felt pearl for her and never actually rejected her upfront.
What’s interesting about Rose/Pink Diamond’s story arc is that it’s REVERSED. We saw her development first so we see her as this perfect being but then we get to see some of her past and her flaws. That’s why I disagree with people hating on Rose so much. She started off as a child but grew into the character we know in the start. She’s not entirely bad and entirely good, much like all of us.

I loved that rose is pink diamond and I love both characters a lot. The next episode is one of my favourites of the whole series
I want to highlight how back in Season 1, you kept accidentally referring to Rose Quartz as "Pink Diamond", and having to correct yourself so much, and it turns out, you were right from the beginning and didn't even know it. ^^

Dude.... Pink Diamond became Rose Quartz. She was always pink diamond but she hated being a diamond so she changed her identity. And Pearl only pretended to be Rose so the other diamonds would think she "killed" Pink Diamond. When she didn't. And then Pink, masquerading as her new identity as Rose would later go on to be the mother of Steven.
In the episode where Greg attempted to fuse with Rose. Rose told Greg that she wasnt a real person.
Also this is the reason why Pearl hates shapeshifting and eating
Scoot, if you go back on the bismuth episode and you go to the part where Steven shows bismuth roses sword, bismuth says that the sword was made to only poof gems but never shatter them
You gotta remember, Lapis is a survivor of an unimaginable amount of trauma, and she still finds the courage to do the right thing many times even in spite of her fears. She spent thousands of years trapped in a mirror, believing everyone forgot about her. The first person she met was Steven. They had probably 5 minutes of interaction together before she was captured by Jasper and Peridot, who then imprisoned her again. After finally being freed by Steven and the Gems, she immediately decided to take one for the team and spent another couple of seasons trapped in an abusive relationship with Jasper so she could save the only ones who seemed to care for her. She had the courage to not only forgive Peridot (her one time captor), but allowed herself to be vulnerable enough to actually trust her and become her best friend. That's the kind of person/gem that's worth the extra effort to fight for when they're scared. You can never waste enough time on a person who's shown that kind of character. She's literally my favorite in the show.

What's crazy is that similar to garnet being a fusion this was one of the first theories that the fans came up with, rose quartz being pink diamond, I bet there are super old videos about it even now

Rose quartz is very much a real gem, because they show the bubbled gem in the Pink's Zoo
Roes Quartz never existed, it was just an 'Alter Ego' that Pink created to go unnoticed, so yeah, Roes Quartz is just a non-existent form, it was always Pink Diamond. Pink Diamond had to fake her death in order to save the earth and her entire army, that's why Pearl covered her mouth in so many episodes, the instinct of pearls is to follow the orders of their diamonds, and as Pink told her: "Please Let's never talk about this, no one can know" Pearl couldn't say anything.
This also implies that not only was Roes all this time pink diamond, but NOW steven is a diamond since he has his gem. Plus that Pearl never dared to change her form, because it brought back a bad memory of when she chose Roes' form to fake Pink's death.

But to put it simply in this episode
Pink Diamond shapeshifted into a quartz
So she can live a life on Earth
But in order to be on Earth permanently is to fake her shattering so she swallowed some fake shards and have pearl shape-shift into Rose Quartz in able to fake it
So once she regenerated back
She will be Rose permanently
And once she was about to have Steven
She gave up her form to create Steven
Which is why they both can’t exist
Remember Pearl sacrificing herself over and over again in Garnet's memories when teaching swordfighting?
Think back what would have been revealed if a Rose Quartz had gotten poofed at any point and a Diamond had come out from said poofing.
It's especially true when you consider almost all soldier gems have cuts like Garnet, Amethysts and other quartzes- there's absolutely no way SOMEONE wouldn't have noticed a diamond coming out of a rose quartz.
Everyone watching when you would accidentally say "Pink Diamond" when you meant Rose at the beginning of the Steven Universe reactions:👁👄👁. I guess we gaslit you pretty good because you fully forgot💀
That's why Steven, is able to see visions of pink. because he's seeing visions of his mother.

So, you'll see in the next couple episodes, but I wouldn't say Rose was fake. Pink Diamond became Rose Quartz. She lived for over 5000 years as Rose, never returning to her diamond form. She changed herself, something that most gems think they're not capable of.
Now you can understand Roses reaction to Bismuth’s plan to use the breaking point to shatter pink lol

Pearls are layers and layers of nacre that the shellfish secretes to incase any irritants so it makes sense that there are pearls within pearls. Like a beautiful onions.

Rose was what Pink Diamond wanted to be, she shape shifted into "Rose" for years. When Pearl Poofed her she was able to reform into Rose, which became her base form.
Finally you reached to the most big plot twist of the show XD There were literally so many foreshadowings of this in the entire show. When I saw the episode for the first time I was like: ":0000000000000000000000000" for like 30 minutes (I think .-. XD)
Sometimes these videos are so painful to watch when the answer to what he’s trying to theorize is literally seconds away if he would just not pause
Things to remember (pending episode 19):
In The Trial, Blue Zircon said that Rose Quartzes were a known threat for several hundred years, so Pink Diamond must have been doing the Scarlet Pumpernickel routine for that long, trying to convince the other Diamonds that Earth was too dangerous to develop.
The reveal didn't shock me, because it was plain to me that Rose Quartz had far too much power to be an ordinary Gem; that she'd somehow gained Pink Diamond's powers. I was more ticked off at the Crewniverse seemingly cheating by making Pink Diamond's gemstone in a form that couldn't possibly match up with Steven's (the faceting on the crown is wrong, otherwise Steven's/Rose's gemstone would be encircled by a zig-zag pattern).
No wonder why Blue Diamond grieved so much, having pooh-poohed Pink's warnings about the danger posed by "Rose Quartz". This would also explain her uncharacteristic fury at Ruby and condemning her to be shattered when Ruby inadvertently blew up the best chance to capture Rose Quartz.

I still remember my reaction. I was in my college dorm watching it on tv. I never dismissed the "Rose is Pink" theory (not after Gravity Falls and started believing all theories just in case) but it did seem a little farfetched yet I did see everyones points. So when Rose said to Pearl "I can't exactly shatter myself", I was like "Wait, what? (suspiciously) What did she mean by that?". And then the reveal! When Rose revealed herself to be Pink, I was ready to scream!!! I wanted to pause but couldn't and I had to keep the freaking out in because I needed to watch more. I had to cover my mouth just to stay in control while I watched the rest. Once the credits rolled though, then I started losing it.
Not gonna lie, the "A Single Pale Rose" entire revelation reaction had me facepalming so hard LMAO.
How they faked the shattering was by pink eating crystals and pearl poofing pink to drop the crystals when she poofs but then take the gem
This show is so good im so mad it was forced to end i remember seeing that rebecca said that she even wrote conversations the gems had without steven and i thought that was really cool
This really reminds me of how much Game of Thrones completely effed up because they wanted to "subvert" the audience who guessed how things would end, and instead made the ending incoherent. Whereas many people guessed Rose was Pink Diamond, but that just made this reveal 10000x more impactful because of how masterfully they wove the story. Probably one of the greatest reveals in a TV show ever written.

The thing I really love about Lapis, as she is one of my personal favourites, is how Rebecca used her as a way to show a different perspective of war and hear. Lapis has ptsd and her way of coping with situations of fear, is flight. literally. She was an innocent victim of the war, she was mistreated by both homeworld and the crystal gems. She was left alone. Then, she finally found a place where she felt safe- and then that safe space was threatened. She did what she thought was best- leaving. Because Lapis wasn't made for fighting, despite how powerful she is. She just wanted a place that felt secure but her fear of everything going wrong prevented her from staying.

Since you have seen the entire show i can say this now. I realized that what Dewey is saying about feeling like he is left behind while everyone ells is growing and changing is the exact thing Steven was having trouble with in Future. And here Steven understands but it just shows that it is a lot easier to help others than to help yourself!

So (I know a year late but just found this) what's going on. The Gems are essentially AI, the 'gem' is the computer they run on, that performs other functions like projecting a body. The Diamonds are the AI with admin privileges, with White Diamond having the Executive Override for all other gems. The Pearls within Pearl are previous iterations of her, at major events where gems basically recompile and their outer form changes permanently the programming build of their 'self' changes and the previous version is 'saved'. In the movie the scythe Spinel has is basically a factory reset, returning them to the first version. But because the 'versions' are saved they could return to normal, Pearl even rebuilding a new version. Now Pearl's are a combination Siri and personal assistant (that's why her first layer is storage). The Pearl we know is an incredibly advanced version (as Peridot says a fancy one) as Pink broke her first one, and after White assumed direct control of that mentally broken Pearl, they gave her a new one who was smarter and more capable than regular Pearls as Pink has always been immature and unfocused. They thought a 'better' Pearl would make up for her short comings. As for why her hands leapt to her mouth (which we see a few times previous when Steven is talking about Rose, Pink and the Shattering. Pearls obey whoever they are bonded to, as we see when reset Pearl bonds to Greg and is practically begging for an order. On top of that Gems are born programmed to Obey Diamonds, especially their Diamond, while that programing can be broken, which is part of their fear of cross gem type fusion as it scrambles the programming, Pearl never did. Pink Diamond ordered her to not speak of it again, and in another episode told her that Pearl making her own decisions made her happy, as her own Diamond's orders override other Diamond's orders Pearl became 'free willed' to obey her Diamond but still must obey old commands.
