14:35 I think it’s actually really important that Steven was able to bring Jasper back. This is the moment Steven realizes that there are no consequences for the horrible thing he just did, the same way there were no consequences for crashing the van. It scares him that he can get away with that.

EXACTLYYY. I think it made him question everything he's ever done. The only real consequence he's ever had was getting banned from watching TV, but then he was unbanned after being defended for something he shouldn't have done (taking Peridot's cruiser for a joyride), so even then he was *rewarded* for the bad thing he did. He feels like he has absolutely no structure in his life, no discipline, and it's leading to very strong reactions and fear, things that are amplified by his trauma.

yeah I feel like it only would have been more disconcerting if we didn't already know that you can heal shattered gems this way but since it wasn't new information I think it allows you to focus more on the fact that he shattered her and what that means for his mentality.

I think that as a writer you have the problem that there's not really many ways in which a Gem can be seriously damaged without it being destroyed. They wanted to go for the equivalent of "nearly died" and "was nearly maimed" or even "permanently maimed in a small way" but Gems can't lose an eye or bleed to near death. That's why they had to go for a very short scene where jasper was shattered and then recovered.
Steven having a kill would have been too dark and almost a betrayal to the entire show, but him having to deal with being *almost* a killer is much more reasonable

    • @iesika7387
      @iesika7387 Před rokem +20

Imagine if he hadn't been able to fix her though - Jasper was out there alone, She'd actively pushed everyone else away. Nobody was going to check on her. Nobody was going to notice she was gone, and if they did they would assume she finally just left. If she'd stayed shattered, nobody would ever have known unless Steven told them. He'd have gotten away with that, too, unless he confessed. And even then I'm not sure what anyone would have done about it?

The “something else” regarding what steven was feeling that you couldn’t quite put your finger on was trauma lol! His disproportionate reactions aren’t just puberty, they’re telltale signs of PTSD. When someone goes through something traumatic and life-threatening, even the smallest things feel “like the world is about to end” like he said during that episode. Steven actually pretty much told us that he REALLY needed a hug in the cactus episode. When he realizes that cactus Steven was just copying him he apologizes and asks “who wants a hug?”. He really did just need someone to stop and hug him so that he could breathe. As someone with childhood trauma I find that incredibly relatable. My trauma gave me BPD and PTSD so my brain goes a little crazy and I start pushing people away if I feel like I am an awful person and when people stop arguing with me or fussing and just listen and hugs me and physically and emotionally reassure me it gives me enough peace to start thinking of actual solutions than just thinking about dying.

    • @SunBeeSmoked
      @SunBeeSmoked Před rokem +9

@@andres_david25 there’s also the fact that cacti are one of the most resilient plants, often known for being able to thrive in harsh environments. On top of fearing hurting the people around him he feels like he should be stronger and more resilient than everyone else, that he should be able to thrive in the environment that he’s in, so he sees his vulnerability as a personal failure despite it resolving 95% of the conflict in his childhood, he doesn’t feel comfortable in that position anymore because of the trauma he faced and he sees that as a horrible thing for him to feel because he’s supposed to be the vulnerable, helpful, reliable, hero for everyone which leads to his imposter syndrome and out of character actions with jasper and white diamond. The cactus was an excellent choice for characterizing Stevens emotional state.

it's not just about the wedding proposal. Steven asking Connie to marry him was not healthy. It was not done at the right time, or for the right reasons. They are both only 16 years old, way too young to be married. And Steven didn't ask her because he really wanted to get married to her, he asked her because he was afraid of her going away, because everything was changing and he was scared. He asked her to marry her because he wanted something to stay the same, he wanted to support his whole existence and his whole well being in his love for Connie. At that moment, he was extremely dependent, plus refusing to deal with the traumas from his past. It wouldn't be healthy for them to get married, because it wouldn't be for the right reasons. As much as it hurt him, Connie was right to say no - or, in her own words, not now. Because she understands that while she loves Steven, she wants to be her own person, do her own thing, be independent. Now, with Steven seeing a therapist and going away to figure things out, he can finally become independent too, so they can be independent together.

It's all about intense and constant childhood trauma and how it can effect a person in adulthood. Steven is suffering from Complex PTSD, which I also have. Dr Maheshwaren mentioned it in the hospital episode abt cortisol, but that's what this epilogue series is all about. Steven never resolved all of his Severely Traumatic experiences, and in the tail end of adolescence he's feeling the effects.
I also have a theory. In Rose's tape to steven, she says "every time you love urself, thats me loving you and loving being you". What if every time Steven hates himself, that's Pink hating herself and wishing ahe had done things differently? In Steven's meltdown and corruption, he calls himself a fraud, but what if that's Pink speaking through him?

To be clear: Steven did not heal Jasper alone. He created a soup of the essences of all 4 Diamonds - it took all of them to heal the damage.
He can revive organic life on his own though, as seen w/ Lars, and Pink w/ Lion.
Just like the other Diamonds had positive/negative sides to their powers, Pink’s powers are dualistic:
When ruled by negative, unhealthy emotions her powers are destructive, damaging, volatile. Eventually disconnecting from emotion entirely and surrendering to base instinct as seen in Steven’s corruption.
When paired with healthy emotional expression, she has the power to heal, to mend, and to bring new life. Her joy makes her lighter than air, her desire to protect others speeds her up. She’s an empath, who cares for the wellbeing of others.

The "I'm a fraud" thinking track is pretty common during mental breakdowns, even if it doesn't make sense to an outsider, it's the real feelings someone's having due to an accumulation of traumatic events that lead them to think that way. That's where the counselling comes in to try and challenge these thought processes. It's tough stuff but I love that Steven Universe is having this kind of theme on the show. The awareness of mental health help is super important! Love your channel!

  • @wtimmins

    'I don't get why he thinks he's a fraud'
    He's traumatized. It's trauma.
And I think a lot of people don't like this season because they actually pivot toward a real person going through teendom and all the trauma spilling out.
The final season folds back all the kid showness and points out a bunch of rather adult themes. Like, his father really didn't do well by him, because Greg projected all HIS issues. And while Greg thought of himself as 'not being controlling,' he essentially abandoned a child to aliens and provided almost no real structure or help.
The fact he had never gone to school, or to a doctor, or anything? That's child endangerment.
Along with, you know, being around destructive alien stuff for most of his life.
Me, I adore this season for actually facing the implications of what they had set up.
I don't know about most of you, but the stuff Steven is saying reminds me a lot of my thoughts as a teen, and I wasn't even partially responsible for genocide and had to face life-threatening attacks most of my life. And my mom wasn't responsible for countless atrocities.

One thing I noticed is that if we come to think of it, Greg escaped of a controlling family just as Rose/Pink did. And both did left everything as heritage to Steven to deal with. All the mistakes and horrible things from Pink's past but also Greg's issues with his family therefore leaving him too much freedom. I came to think of it in the episode of Mr. Universe's song and all the Demayo's beef, I wonder how would've reacted Steven if Greg used Pink's story to explain it? Something like: "The way I felt Shtu-ball is the same way your mom felt, I felt like White Diamond was forcing her ways on me all my childhood and I felt like I couldn't breath anymore. You made them understand how hurtful that must've been on Rose and how it was wrong, do you think you can see how I came to leave and find my way on my own?". I don't think it would've sinked in at the moment tho cuz he really needed to deal with his inner turmoil, but the similarities just came to me and I found it interesting.

Yes! At the time of this being aired, I was still living at home with my parents and siblings. My younger brother and I had bonded over this season specifically because we related to it so much. I am the eldest daughter of 7 kids, with an older brother and then rest of them are younger. My parents do not have a healthy marriage by any means and it meant my brother and I had a lot of emotional baggage. Steven reflected that. Seeing a character we grew up with, have struggles and show real emotion was so... comforting.
I personally suffer from ptsd, severe anxiety and depression. Watching Steven struggle was so confrontational.
To be shown we have a right to get upset about things... was shocking honestly. Holding the gems accountable, holding Greg accountable... it was a first. Steven was expected to deal with a lot as a kid, now as a teen, he had to come to terms with it.

A big theme in future is growing up. Steven has ALWAYS been responsible for everything his entire life and he's undergoing extreme trauma along with his puberty. When it comes to how mad Steven got at everyone, especially Greg. That kind of family trauma will fuck you up and create hostility that doesn’t need to be there. Plus we know from the hospital episode that his body is reacting to every stressor in his life as if it was a life threatening danger. Combine both of those with the emotional uncertainty that permeates heavily at that age it’s pretty understandable why Steven got so screwed up.

  • @twistysart

Im kinda questioning if you saw/understood the hospital visit for steven
its ptsd from all the terrifying things he went through as a kid and having to take horrid punishments cuz of his mother
severe stuff like his gem leaving his body (his gem is attached to his guts and stuff)
    threats of shattering (being killed)
and figuring out his mom was just like the people that threatened to kill him and the other gems
he had to solve every single problem his mother put on others and his family
and when everyone was okay he was left with only himself and no one “wanting” help from him anymore
    He felt useless for that
but because he’s always the “fixer, therapy friend”
he didn’t want to dump his problems on others

Look at all those letters they just... ignore from him. Of course he kept Steven away from that. Family isn't shit if they can't love like one.
And a lot of the stuff Steven wanted him to provide-- especially school, or doctors appointments the first 13 years of his life-- genuinely was impossible. He's half-alien, he *can't* enroll in school, maybe not even online. He probably doesn't even have a birth certificate. He shoulda spent more time w/ Steven, and he shoulda been getting him checked out by Connie's mom a lot earlier, but... that's it. Otherwise he's been a very W dad throughout the series.

When we meet Pink in the original series you see she has a very gentle, softspoken voice, and she's very careful around smaller gems because you know what happened to Volleyball affected her greatly. Steven starts this series off hating everything bad that Pink did and then doing them anyway, not out of malice but out of uncontrollable emotion as a result of trauma (which Pink did).

I like how they show that the 3 “big” diamonds have all these untapped powers they didn’t know about (kinda like Steven), but it’s not like they just became good people suddenly after being tyrants.
Their newfound powers are of diminishing helpfulness. First we see yellow fixing shattered and corruption-scarred gems - something that’s a VERY big deal in the context of the story. Next we see blue… helping gems feel good? This does make sense considering how many gems throughout homeworld must be traumatized, and she can be sort of a healer in that sense, but it’s not exciting the way the prospect of potentially fixing all the shattered gems from the war would be. Then we get to white Diamond… the kookiest of the bunch, the ultimate scary grandma… and her big new power is… letting people control her like a marionette. Any attempt at empathy from white gets a gold star for “most improved” but it’s still out of touch in a way that makes sense for what she represents.

They decided everything for him, his haircut, his clothes, what he ate, nearly everything. So when Greg saw his chance for freedom he took it and never looked back. However we do see that over the years Greg did try to reconnect with them to tell them about his life and even Steven. Sadly though we see that they never even opened the letters, they kept them but never opened them. It's like once he became his own person they just shut him out from their world of schedules and routines.

"I'm a fraud" - Imposter Syndrome. In simple terms, it's where you've come to see yourself as a terrible person and when others express how much of a 'good' person you are, you believe you've tricked them, that you're being fake to keep that image which further makes you believe you're a bad person. I struggle with this myself.
You believe that all your actions have ulterior motives, even if you weren't thinking like that. You believe that you putting on a face around others isn't to spare their feelings or whatever other reason but to hide how you truly feel, because if you get upset or outburst then, you'll be 'seen as a fraud'. You build this image of being kind and helpful and nice to everyone, so when you start to feel upset or angry, you think yourself to be a bad person.
"They didn't mean to hurt me, therefore I shouldn't be upset."
"They just don't know any better! I can't blame them for that."
"They apologised! I should just let this go, it's not a big deal."
You invalidate your own feelings, you justify everyone's actions, so to feel upset by anything makes you feel like you're in the wrong.
Because you fear if you act on these feelings, you're going to hurt someone and if you do that... it actually makes you a bad person.
    But it doesn't.
Being angry, and upset, doesn't make you a bad person.
How you deal with any emotion, shows your character. Lashing out (I didn't know how else to phrase this so please take it with a grain of salt) is still ok, so emotion just can't be contained in words... but in a controlled environment. Rage rooms is a good example.
Having emotions, isn't a bad thing... it's human

When we flashed back to young Greg in the series he was literally homeless, busking for spare change, eating other people's garbage out of a trash can. He was chosing that over whatever happened in that house. Steven is never ever going to hear details (at least not until he's much older and they've both had some heavy therapy) so we're never going to hear details, but some bad stuff clearly went down.
People do not go full no contact with their parents on a whim. People do not go full no contact with their parents for like 20 years and not even contact them when they are homeless living with a newborn baby in the back of a van during the winter because their parents were a little stuffy or controlling. We know how dedicated Greg is to Steven's health and happiness and he kept him away from and unaware of his grandparents even when Steven did not have a house to live in until whatever age he was in the extended intro - old enough to write bangin original songs and play the ukelele like a pro.
We don't know what Greg's life was really like to cause him to completely cut stakes with his entire family and change his name but I don't think it was a bad haircut or their disapproval of his being a wannabe rocker. Something happened, y'all.

I don't know if someone has already mentioned this but I just wanted to talk a bit about how I feel about the Mr. Universe car scene-
I think the main reason Steven got so mad was that he was seeing this sheltered, safe, 'normal' life that Greg had with his parents, and thinking that that was the best life ever. And from his perspective, it is. His everyday life as a kid consisted of going on life-threatening missions, fight off deadly gems with the intents to kill him for things he never did, and dealing with the Crystal Gems' emotional issues every Tuesday. Of course he would look at a life where he could live without fearing for his life and being able to go to school as the dream. All of these feelings are heightened after his time at the hospital is still fresh in his mind, and having to come to the realization that all the experiences he had as a kid actually impacted him mentally. And THEN to find out that that 'perfect sheltered life' was RIGHT HERE? That he didn't HAVE to live with the gems, that there had been the option to live a normal life this whole time?
Obviously we know that Greg's parents were terrible, Greg knows his parents were terrible, but to Steven? To Steven, it meant that he could've lived a normal life without the stresses of saving the whole world , it meant he could've had two parents who protected him from danger, it meant he could've gone to school and made some friends his age. It's completely fair for him to feel jealous of his dad here.

    1. This isn't his puberty it's his trauma manifesting in emotional instability and outbursts
    2. Donnie saying not now was the only correct answer, it would've been so much worse if she said yes when she couldn't handle something so big at such a young age ans you shouldn't be mad at her for it
    3. Yellow couldn't have fixed Volleyball/Pink Pearl because that crack couldn't have been healed by Steven either, it's emotional damage
Same with why Spinel still looks the way she does, her appearance changed due to emotional damage

Andy is greg’s cousin, a father’s cousin is sometimes called an uncle.

So this is not an official/canon story to Steven universe, it’s a fanfic but I really enjoy reading it. It’s by revolver-d. basically is a story about how pink diamond had a third pearl before the other 2 and she REALLY messed up because of it amongst other things that happened to her which you can find out if you decide to read it, 10/10 recommend

14:37 I HEAVILY disagree with that actually. I really don't think Jasper staying shattered would've made for a better show. Because SU Future goes all in on sending it's message, reaching people who can kind of relate to Steven, giving them advice on trauma through Stevens experiences. If Jasper had stayed shattered, Steven would've had that on his conscience too, which would've severely muddled that message.

jaspser staying shattered would've entirely changed the ending because how the hell would anyone look at him the same after he KILLED someone? like, there's no way he could recover from literally murdering someone he's known for years on accident. that's just a thing that would entirely change the trajectory of the story.

i also think steven would have literally never been able to forgive himself. it would eat him up inside for good.

@@capn_toad exactly!!!! there would be no benefit to having her permanently die
