This cartoon was legendary. Loved this episode as a kid and it freaked me out. The one time I saw Dungeon master get pissed.
I didnt notice that but what I noticed was since Dungeon Maser obviously has kids it must be possible that Zandora is his wife & a Dungeon Mistress.
"Come on, Dungeon Master! Who is it? Or... or what is it?"
"His name is not for a Saturday morning cartoon, barbarian..."
So do you know what channel is it if you know please tell me

I agree 🔥👌🏼
Yes
Absolutely!
It's pretty ordinary. Nothing setting it apart from other cartoons at the time.
@@slizzardshroomer9666 you must be a millennial.
When the nine hells or the abyss open you run. Even Venger knew better! Elder Evils are not to be fucked with.
Dungeon Master says you must not look upon his face and what does Eric do ; he only goes and looks it/ him square in the face ! 🤣🤣.
This is the scariest episode..
You said it buddy. Talk about a no win situation at the beginning
Yeah hands down..!!
One off the best in it watch the last episode made at last on u tub
It's pretty good.
Lovecraft is good book.
"But I have NOT FAILED!! I have earned NO PUNISHMENT!!!" When Venger's crying like a bitch...u KNOW ur in trouble! This was the season 3 premiere of Dungeons& Dragons--& they came out swinging!! I remember this episode so vividly from my childhood. It had the weight & feel of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Fantastic script that led to fantastic vocal performances from just about every member of this extraordinary cast!
This is one of, if not the scariest episode of the show. If you think about it, it seems to have been inspired by Locevraftian work: an ancient, multi-dimensional evil so powerful that it's beyond human comprehension. You can't speak his name. You can't look at it without going mad (though Eric did haha). That's pure cosmic horror and I don't think it's a coincidence.
I recall this as being one of the scariest d&d episodes .. perhaps too much for little viewers and also feared looking at his face! I was fearful of this storyline as a child
"Never abandon your leadership "life long lesson
"Or your hope"
Never send kids to do something world-ending without telling them what's at stake, DM. Don't blame them for your failures afterward.
A line full of wisdom
One thing I'd like to add - "Dungeon at the Heart of Dawn" is an amazingly arresting episode title. Pure poetry.
Sounds like a Star Trek title from the original series
This and the dragons graveyard were two of the best episodes
Definitely!
Tells you how strong that entity is, DM used up all his power and the 300-year charge of the magic weapons in a few seconds, and it barely slowed that thing down.
Very good point yes
Also, let's not forget that Venger was able to hurt Tiamat while using their power, even when they were just about completely spent, so those weapons are no joke but it was like nothing to the nameless one.
This episode has such production values. A sense of urgency, strong characterizations and voice acting, and the animation to go with them - even the music timing is some places is so effective. Real effort was put into this show from all involved when the episode design was well aligned. The animation of Venger's intro, the music as Bobby is burying the box, Eric feeling the weight of Dungeon Master when he reappears, Sheila calling out to Dungeon Master at the end, the wind reversing as Dungeon Master emerges. All wonderful. When I saw this episode a second time, I realized how much was packed into it - it was impossible to recollect it all from the first time.
Absolutely terrifying episode! They had no hope of winning. If the Nameless One didn't leave on his own, they'd be slaughtered.
They would need the help of the Almighty One to defeat the Nameless One.
Yeah, but it begs the question of WHY he left, what did he just go, "Meh, I'm bored now, put everything back the way it was." and leave?
@@DeadDevilDying the land was still desolate tho.
@@DeadDevilDying
It is not omnipresent, it has other realms to rule and subjugate.
It wants the entire cosmos, it thinks it can rule everything.
It can not.
To rule everything you have to be everything. Then you would not be one, but all and lose what made you one.
Great episode for a series that merges life lessons plus mythic, philosophical, religious and historical allusions. The Box of Balefire is an intriguing reference to Pandora's Jar and the Nameless One both the metaphysical and demon being common in many legends- the threat to civilization the heroes have to defeat and in doing so make paramount decisions to save it and their comrades.
There is an even more overt reference in "The Box" with Zandora.

This terrified me as a child because it emcompassed what I always thought, would happen if the Devil was Rral and manifested on Earth, I was 7 years old at the time... Nightmares. And it was on a TV Kids Cartoon, No Voice no Body, just Dread Unending and Boiling Malevolence
When I first saw this I was 17. I was concerned that some kids would think this represents reality. I thought it was a bit extreme to characterize this being as a ruler of many universes.
@@kilroy987 this episode is terrifying for kids. It's pure cosmic horror, with clear references to HP Lovecraft's work. You can think of the "thing" as the devil, but this is not related to the bible at all.
@@kilroy987 Well that's your opinion He was Literally a Hugh Fucking Tornado Bru
You'd think Dungeon Master would learn his lesson by now that Eric will always do the opposite of what he says. "Don't look at the Nameless One's face." All of them should have turned towards Eric at that point. "You hear that Eric?"
one of my favs! love this show. still do, 30 years later.
This has always been my favorite episode. The urgency and dread at the beginning is done so well. And I absolutely love the way they animated the scene when dungeon master uses the kids weapons to launch a defense against the evils attack! First beam fight I ever saw, long before DBZ came along. So dramatic! Visually, it really showed how powerful this evil being was.
5:51 when you're so scared your eyeballs start twitching in their sockets !
Bobby using the only genuinely offensive weapon in the kids’ arsenal . There is Hank’s bow but that doesn’t always prove very effective.
Even Venger's ghostly face is whiter with fear when Shadow demon announced that the Nameless One arrival.
6:43 Venger: "So anyway, I started blasting."
Tiamat wouldn't have a chance against the who's name cannot be spoken.
I get it The Nameless One is supposed to be Venger's master since that's who made him who he was & he had turned his back on Dungeon Master because he wanted power & he felt like he wasn't getting what he wanted with DM so he had no choice but to seek out The Nameless one, But Dungeon Master made a vow to never give up on his son which is why he needed help in bringing him back which explains where the kids came in.
This episode scared me as a kid, but I still thought it was awesome. My opinion hasn't changed. :)
This is Satan / Lucifer .... the evil of many worlds. It's one the darkest episodes , yet I would have loved to seen more characters return .. Zandora , Deckion , the celestial knight , Martha and any other characters who helped them.. even Vengor getting Karina , and any of his followers to aid together with the children to save the realm from the nameless one.. even Tiamet .... would really built this even a a good two part episode ...
jackjackson 4 That would have been cool. Then we could have seen Tiamats God form.

But yeah for an old 80's cartoon set in a dnd-esque world it had a suprising amount of great and memorable, one-off characters that I would've actually liked to have seen made reappearance! Maybe have alot of these originally episodic characters seen both in cameos and even brief scenes interacting with the main cast, y'know for that juicy continuity! *I would've loved to see a return of Lorn, Eric's one true friend he made in the dnd-esque realm along with his adopted tribesmen, especially that that sweet woman whom stood up for Lorn. (forgot her name, if she even was named..)*
P.S. I also would've liked to have seen a return of that man who acted as a father figure to the main characters, the kids, he seemed like a wise and kind person! (also forgot his name..)
This is in no way related to the bible. This whole episode is pure cosmic horror, a clear reference to H.P Lovecraft's work.
It's likely Tharizdun if Gary Gygax was involved in this.
It wouldn't hve worked. Tjhe Nameless One can destroy entire realms at a whim if it suits it. By that logic, eve if every powerful creature in the Realm had stood against it, it would have wiped them all out instantaneously. When Dungeon Master decides running is the only answer, you KNOW you're in deep hooey!
You know you're in deep shit when EVERYONE including the Dungeon Master gets their asses kicked! 😬
It really killed me when at 20:18 Dungeon Master tells them, "prepare yourselves, my children" and I remembered that *spoiler* Venger is really Dungeon Master's son, so even though DM is mostly referring to the kids as a term of endearment, he is also referring to his actual son. After he tells them that there is a clip of them getting ready to fight and it shows some of the gang as well as Venger. Some foreshadowing perhaps? (Seeing as they didn't actually release the relationship of Venger and DM at this point, I like to interpret it that way.) It is also a little humorous when you think of it as a father-son relationship when Venger calls Dungeon Master "old man" at 20:37.
Episode 20, 20:40 DM says to Venger "Rise my son" as he helps him stand.

A Venger action figure would be pretty damn awesome 😜
The unwritten rule number one of D&D is "NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY!!!". It's a cardinal rule that they break right from the very beginning and keep doing through the whole episode! Haha!!!

Thats why solo party. In nwn 😂
Technically they didn't split because they wanted, they needed to help dungeon master to have any chance of winning so they didn't have time to rescue anyone.

If the Nameless One is the true definition of Evil. I wonder who's the rival that defines Good that can match him and live to tell the tale?
There is none. Evil does not require god to combat it, but sadly, the same cannot be said vice-versa. Good must always be balanced by Evil, but Evil does not always need to be balanced by good. The Nameless One is dewstined to destroy everything in its path, to return all to nothing.

At around 16:09 was when this episode which was both recorded onto VHS tape and dubbed in Korean got cut off while I was watching as if the tape had reeled its last and had to be fully rewinded back to the beginning! 😵
But now by watching this full episode, I'm finally able to see how this episode ends.
the best designs are these
I must have missed this one never seen it.
Love it .
It was the most intense episode
So, a question comes to mind...
Venger has obviously been to the Underworld before, having enslaved Uugar (sp?) and his people.
So it begs the question, after the end of the episode, when Venger is at full strength again, why doesn’t he travel back to the Underworld and travel to the Heart of Dawn (now that he knows the way), and drink from it. That would likely give him a massive boost of power, and could easily take on the pupils afterwards.
A few counterpoints:
His travel there drained him - Only because he was protecting himself and Shadow Demon from imminent obliteration. Under less pressure, transporting himself there wouldn’t be an issue.
The Heart of Dawn is depleted - Certainly a possibility, and something that tremendous would take a long time to recharge, if it wasn’t a one-off like the Hall of Bones.
Most magic has to be restored and has a usage limit
I`m a little late here I know but its possible that the Heart of Dawn doesnt boost a persons power it just replenishes it to the level it was previously at before they were drained so it wouldnt have any effect on a full powered Venger. On an unrelated note I cant believe people didnt give credit to Venger for bringing Shadow Demon along with him, most evil characters would have just saved themselves and let their minions fend for themselves.Shows once again that Venger does have a certain honour about him.
@@Dan261178 It's certainly possible that it would just be a full restore, but that honestly seems like a bit lackluster. Why then would Dungeon Master be willing to try to take on The Nameless One after a little refill, when he was so scared before, and didn't think they had a chance even with the combined strength of his power and all their weapons?
I definitely agree with you on Venger having a certain amount of honour. He is Dungeon Master's son, after all... I'd say he's Lawful Evil, rather than Chaotic Evil. We saw that after to destruction of Demodragon, where despite likely knowing that Presto had nothing to do with the victory, he accepted that balance had been restored (Venger being the one who screwed up by creating/freeing Demodragon), and parted amicably, despite how he could've just ordered his orc horde to capture the kids and take the weapons right there and then.
As for protecting Shadow Demon... good minions are hard to find, so a good evil overlord makes sure to protect a valued worker :P
