  • In this video I go over how to play MIDI on a guitar without having to use a MIDI pickup with the Midi Guitar App by Jam Origin. I demo how it sounds as well as give a walkthrough on how to use it. It's a really cool app and it works fantastic if you are interested in exploring the world of MIDI guitar.

    Excellent tutorial, Scott! You have a very pleasant way of explaining these issues!I always wanted a midi guitar way back in the middle 90s, and Steinberg were very helpful - but my bank manager wasn't... I'm refitting my Yamaha electric guitar, and this is the software and interface I'll prbably go for, with an iRig and a farely recent iPad! Thanks again, my 74 years won't seem a day too long!

    Hi Scott. I commented on your other video yesterday and today and I subscribed . Its nice to see a fellow midi guitarist doing awesome guitar work. I sent a follow up comment/question today on your other Triple play video asking about the latency differences between the wireless TP with a Mac verses the iPad pro. I'm so hoping the latency is not greater with the iPad pro. I hope to do some cool things with it if it not slower in its data flow. On another topic, can you tell me if there is greater latency with the Jam Origin verses the Triple Play on the iPad? Thank you kindly for you time in reading this

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you for subscribing, and I'm glad you've found the videos helpful! I don't notice much of a difference in latency at all between the TP and Jam Origin. They both seem to work just fine. Just going off of being logical, my guess would be the TriplePlay works better because you get a pickup for each string. But I honestly haven't found any time when Jam Origin has messed up, even without needing an external pickup. Both are completely fine to use for sure. I do find my TP gets "stuck" on notes more often than the Jam Origin one does though.

      In the trial version, it just cuts out every minute or so. And yes any audio interface will definitely be very useful. And I believe it will work with mandolin as well or any stringed instrument, but it might not be as accurate as the guitar. But I’ve never tried that actually. Cheers 👍

      @@ScottUhlMusic I have noticed while playing around with the trial version of the PC one that in some situations at least with my guitars it has some issues getting all notes to trigger. Like I'm doing finger plucked two note power chords (so root and fifth), and in some regions of the neck it struggles to pick up the fifth consistently. If I just do the fifth alone it picks it up really easily, very sensitive, but combined with the root at the same time it can struggle a bit.
      I would expect that on a hexaphonic pickup like the Triple Play or the GK-3 it wouldn't have these issues, since both strings are listened to separately, instead of trying to figure them out from a mess of noise. Any experiences with issues like this?

  • @jubuttib
    @jubuttib Před rokem

    I think you understood the guitar section a bit wrong. I doubt the idea is to use it to split the signal. Many of the presets at least on the PC version include both the guitar and midi instrument sides simultaneously, using effects like the Deep Harmonic EQ or the Deep Expressor in the Guitar pipeline to create a sound that's already quite synth like for the guitar, then adding midi sounds on top of that. In the presets on PC there's for example the patch Deep Techno Fluty, which doesn't use midi at all, and only uses the Deep Expressor effect to create a synth like sound from just the guitar signal. Kinda like how the Electro-Harmonix Synth9 pedal and the Boss SY-line of pedals create synth like sounds without midi, just by processing the guitar signal.
    One added benefit of this is that there's even less delay, since it doesn't have to perform any note identification, it's just modifying the input sound.

      That’s weird, some setting must have to be changed to fix that. I haven’t seen that before

    I'm back after months if you guys are new to this the audio interface is an actual device you need to use to do this correctly.

      Why are you not able to play kick? If it’s because a kick is normally played as the C below the low E string (and snare is the D below the low E string) when converted to MIDI, try messing with the transposer. So if you set the transposer down an octave, when you play fret 3 on A string (note C), you should be able to trigger a kick. It just depends which app you are controlling. I guarantee there is a way to do it if that doesn’t work. You just have to mess with it.

      Mess with the settings, but guitar isn’t really meant to be super accurate for midi. It’s very tough to setup

      I would probably really like the GR-55 better than this too, but if we use the PC version as a standard, it costs like 150€, where the GR-55 without the GK-3 costs 750€...
      I think this is a really good way to dip your toes into guitar midi stuff, and you can then start looking at the higher end solutions if you think you really want to follow that path. Especially since you can try this out for free on PC.
