MIDI Guitar 2.2.1 - Best plugins 2022

- JamOrigin’s MIDI Guitar 2 is the software solution for any guitarist who wants to use his/her OWN guitar as a MIDI controller.
I've made it my personal goal to seek out what I would consider the best working plugins to go with MIDI Guitar 2, be it instruments, additional software, or FX. I've done so under the "MIDI Guitar Project" header for a few years now, and some of the instruments you see here have already been mentioned. But this doesn't make them ineligible for this year's iteration, however. A good plugin is a good plugin.

You are the first person I have seen who makes MIDI guitar actually practical. Once more people realise the possibilities of what can be achieved, I think these videos will become the go-to resource for getting set up. You are a great musician btw. So much emotion coming through in your music.
Thank you so much Simba! Much apprechiated! 🙏🙏🙏😀
Really surprised how few people seem to be exploring these possibilities but it seems like finding your channel is making up for that!
I agree with you! I would have expected a lot more people to be using this software. But I see great things to come in the near future.🔮 Thanks for stopping by. 🙏👍
Excellent synopsis of the best plugins for MIDI Guitar 2, Leif! ...and as always, terrific playing to demonstrate. Thank you!
Thank you Billy! 🙏🙏🙏
Every time I see one of your videos, I bring home something precious. And enjoy so much listening your playing, regardless of Midi Guitar 2 (that I've just discovered).
Wow, Thanks a bunch Paolo! I really appreciate that! 🙏 🙏 🙏
Thank you very much for the quick view with our Ample China Erhu and Ample Bass Upright. Glad we made your list with the Excellent JamOrigin MIDI Guitar 2.2.1 Best regards from the AmpleSound Team!
Thank YOU guys for making excellent software instrument. The pleasure was mine! 🙏🙏🙏
Your work is so incredibly inspiring and helpful. Thank you so much for that!🙏
Hey! Thank you for letting me know! 🙏 And if you know of any forums where this kind of content would be apprechiated, don’t think twice about sharing, ok? 😀🤝
I love how far you push MG2 and how much time & talent you clearly put into these videos. I’ve recently purchased a bunch of things you shown on here.....and haven’t regretted a single one ofc. Thank you for giving us recommendations & tips as often as you do
(Side note: your use of the hexaphonic pickup with the Waves harmony plug is super creative! Easily the most innovative use of it I’ve seen so far)
Thanks a million! I’m happy to hear you are happy with my suggestions on gear and whatnot. Yeah, the waves thing just came about as I was trying some other hex PU related stuff. Like a happy accident! 😀👍
Wow! You are an excellent guitar player and even more you really can play via MG in a superb way!
Thanks a million, man! I am glad to hear you like it! 😀🙏🙏🙏
Wow u make jazz look easy lol I’d like to see some jazz teaching vids from you.
Thanks! 🙏 Well, Jazz and perhaps modernist classical stuff is what drives me to try to come up with new ways to employ technology to achieve the most natural sounding results. I am not interested in perfection really. Expression is way more important for me.
You have inspired me. I don't know if you realize how good you are. I have 2.99k subs but you will end up getting 1m if you start teaching and this midi stuff thanks for all the time you spend I see that you even put time into making your vids edited nice.

@@Bflatest Thanks a million, man! Much appreciated. I've been at it for quite some time, and there is surely some educational content on the channel already, so I am looking forward to what the future holds. Don't forget to tip anyone else that might be interested too. 😀🙏🙏🙏
Very interesting and educational.
Thanks a bunch! 🙏🙏🙏
Best video ever for guitarists ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

That's awesome.... Thanks
Thank YOU 👈🙏 🙏🙏

Wow, great stuff as always Leif! If you had to choose between Sample Modeling and Audio Modeling, what would you do?
Hi Peter! Since you twist my arm here, I would probably choose the Sample Modeling Trumpet and SWAM stuff for anything else! But happily, I don’t have to choose! 👍😀
Hello ! I've tried and purchased MIDI Guitar 2. I use it with the Logic Pro natives midi plugins. It's awesome but i have to modify my way of playing guitar (as you says in a previous video). Thanks a lot. It's a cheaper alternative to a real MIDI Guitar
Hi there! Glad to hear you like the software. I hope you get as much out of it as I have. 😀👍
That's amazing were did you get that midi guitar from I need to get one for cubase , that is a game changer 🎉
Well, the guitar itself is just an ordinaty electric guitar. It is the JamOrigin MIDI Guitar software that is making it work this way. ALL you need to know about MIDI Guitar 2 in 2022

Hi. I love your videos. I've been looking for a way to use my guitar to record realistic sounding basslines and this software looks the most promising. 2 quick questions:
(a) If I was going to use an iPad to record in Garageband which version should I use?
(b) do you like the stock basses that come the software?
Hi, and thanks! To your questions, a) I guess you are asking about the GarageBand version vs the full iPad version of MIDI Guitar 2? If it isn't 100 % a question of financial ruin I would go for the "full version" just because it is so much more useful. In standalone mode on the iAd you can use it as a host for other instruments, make patches for easier access, and there is also an in-app purchase to Send MIDI to every other MIDI software you have on your iPad. That is mostly how I have come to use it. But I am no massive iPad proponent since mine is rather old. To b), my answer is; very seldom. I am sort of picky with what instruments I say I like or recommend. The videos I do are mostly concerned with that, and I don't often recommend stuff based on a price range. I talk about playability and response and stuff like that, and I have yet to try a Bass for iPad that I could see myself recommend. Although I am pretty sure there are some, I just don't know about them yet! (Sorry) 😬
I found your videos and it made me rethink using my guitars as MIDI controllers. I was against adding a MIDI pickup and did not want to buy a guitar just for MIDI. because of your great videos and demos I purchased the Mac and iPad versions of MIDI Guitar 2. I do have a question on why and what string damper I see on your guitars? Thanks!
Hi man! Glad to hear of your interest in MIDI Guitar 2. Well, the string dampers you see are the traditional Gruvgear Fretwraps. And I use these mainly because they help stop any unwanted string noise like sympathetic resonance and also of course help me to a cleaner output when I am using both hands on the fretboard. The most important thing for getting a great result with MIDI Guitar 2 is to reduce the number of bum notes you yourself create by resting your hand on the strings or by being sloppy in general. After that, the signal chain is of utmost importance. No crackling cables or pedals on the way and all that stuff,. But I was really meticulous in the beginning with trying to eliminate all possible sources of interference, so that is why you see the string damper in almost all clips. I actually use them less today when I have learned how to cope even without them. But they were important to me in the beginning. 👍
@@lofileif Thank you
Thanks for this great video. 💯💯💯! Loved how you used it with Waves Harmony too! Can I ask 3 questions: i) Would playing with an electric guitar or acoustic guitar give better control over your sounds? ii) How did you connect the TEC breath controller in your setup? iii) Can $149.99 version be used with all DAWS including GarageBand? I would get that instead of the GB version if I can use it with GB and Mainstage too!
Hi man, and thanks thank you 🙏 🙏🙏 To your questions, i) An electric guitar gives you much better results. It is a resonance thing mainly. Check out the settings video for details on the setup:
czcams.com/video/hHY9CysF4Dc/video.html
For ii) setting up the breathcontroller:
czcams.com/video/fnj5Q_kjpdM/video.html
And for iii) Yes, the full version cover all DAWs (including GB and Mainstage) 😀👍
@@lofileif Thank you! I imagine that you don't even need a fancy guitar to make great music with the midi guitar 2. Just one which has great playability!
Exactly! You’ll get the best results with a solid body guitar since you get less interfence from resonance, but that is really marginally better. I have some chambered guitars that work fine as well. The important thing is that it plays all the notes (no dead notes) and that you are comfortable playing it! You will probable feel you want to add something to your picking approach. They way we silenence ringning strings makes all the difference (see the tracking video).👍
@@lofileif Great - thanks for taking time to respond!
O by the way, how does the plug-in handle strums either in a guitar or a ukulele? It would be nice to get a nice acoustic guitar sound out of an electric guitar. I see a lot of what you do is finger style.
Nordisk Kontrabass sounds great, but unfortunately, I don't have Kontakt. I wonder what you think about the SWAM DOUBLE BASS as an alternative? Especially for jazz-type plucked bass sounds.
Hey Andrew! The SWAM instruments are fantastic in their own right, superplayable and all, but the Nordisk Kontrabass has some unique qualities soundwise. I can’t say they are exchangable in any of the projects I have used them. Maybe Amplesounds Upright is closer if you are only considering the plucked sounds? It is worth taking a look at! 👍
Amazing!! How do you do your drums?
Thanks man! I use different kinds of apps, drummachines or autogenerative methods. Never MIDI Guitar for those though!
Hi, Nice sharing tks. Have you tried with spectrasonics instruments like trillion bass and keyscape how good is the playability with midiguitar2 ?
Hi Tero, and thanks! No, I haven’t actually. There are a few holes in my software collection, and Keyscape or Trillion are certainly part of that. I’ve heard only good things, but never got round to buying! 🤷♂️
Well noted thanks. Not sure if possible to get demo version to try as per at least sound sampless heard seems great. S also has nylon guitar module
nice sound bro.how can i get sound like that sir

Fantastic, but is possibility for violinist to? I'm playing electric violin.Which hardware equpment and software I need to buy for live play with maximal low latention?
Hi! The next generation of this software (MG3) is supposed to have a dedicated violin tracker. I have no date for its release though. You shouldn’t need any special hardware, if you play electic you already have a pickup. The only thing you need is an audio interface, and it really doesn’t have to be anything expensive. I use a Focusrite Scarlett myself. You can keep up to date on the forum - jamosapien.com
@@lofileif Ok, so I waiting. I would like to be THE NUMBER ONE - the first most popular on CZcams MIDI Violinist and audio-video live performer, and I think You can help me with this, so please check my yt channel and help me little bit with grow and change it to different and better stuff than now it is. Thanks :)
Question: I am a real newbee, can I use the Midi guitar 2 alone or do I have to connect it to a daw? I downloaded the trial version by itself and connected it to my Focusrite interface and cannot get any sound out of it. I am using the test piano. I set the audio interface to the Focusrite. I noticed there in no output interface tab to set. I am using the windows version. Thanks, Ron
Hi Ron! You can use MIDI Guitar 2 in at least three different ways: 1) As standalone, loading any instruments from the INSTRUMENTS slot, and adding some effects to the signal chain too, and 2) You can use the Standalone instance to connect to a DAW, but it is easier for the Mac users , since MG2 creates a virtual MIDI connection on Mac, whereas the PC users will have to find a MIDI routing system that works (check the forum if you are looking for that solution - I am on Mac, so I can't tell which is the best solution for PC users nowadays). jamosapien.com
3) Use the plugin version that comes with the software to work with MG2 in your DAW. You probably need to do a scan for new plugins, but after that your DAW will show that plugin in the a valuable plugins list as an AUDIO track FX.
why I cant use midi guitar 2 the right way? It is missing so many notes when I am playing. Can you make a video how not to miss notes please with midi guitar 2?
Hi there! Well , the journey is different for all of us, but we have also all struggled a little in the beginning. My personal approach to cleaning up my playing - and thus getting the notes I play to be the notes I eventually hear - is to practice a lot with ONLY the sound of the virtual instruments/synths I want to use. Not listen to the guitar sound coming in. It really doesn't matter how clean or crisp your technique is if that kind of technique doesn't work with the software. So start over, start slow. Control one note at a time to begin with. When you feel you can both start and STOP (super important) a note at will, go on to intervals, and then chords. And then you can start to look at special techniques like sweep picking, and advanced legato playing. It did this video ao Tracking, and settings and stuff, a while ago. In it I go over most of the thing I can think of that are of some interest for this topic. Please, take a look at that to begin with: czcams.com/video/hHY9CysF4Dc/video.html
Do you have a video like this but with iOS iPad instruments?
No, I don't actually! I haven't had time to explore the iOS side of things really. I use all my SWAM instruments there, and also the Pianoteq stuff since they migrated their stuff onto the iPad too. But more than that, not at all.
so I guess you might recommend using a laptop and midi guitar rather than iPad?@@lofileif
Hi I already use a Tiple play pickup for midi and can go from patches to patches with the onboard controller (volume too) But what about Midi guitar 2 ? how can I control patches ..Pedal ?
yes, is you like you can connect a foot pedal to switch patches. Youl use Program Change messages and it is probably best to rename any patches (with a prefix 001,002,003.. ) for the order you want them to appear. I did this little silent movie video a couple of years ago, if you care to see what it looks like: czcams.com/video/EBXID-u7GkU/video.htmlsi=SY1MmyF2R28ewXkH
Thank's I will have a look to the video .Those pedals are used only in a Daw or on Midi guitar 2 app itself ?
.Well also , I dont know if you can help ,but I don't know were to get help , but I was using guitar midi 2 , 2 months ago (free trial ) and now I tried again , without changing nothing , but it does not work any more .My interface is UMC204HD and it is recognise into my PC (Peripherical) and also recognise when I click on "interface " on the Mididi guir App, but I hav'nt curve moving and no midi sound ..
Yes, you can use the foot controller with the standalone version (without a DAW). About your issue, I don't use a PC, so I can't give you a detailed walkthrough or anything. But there is no time limit to the trial version, more than the one where you have to "click to continue trial". You should be able to evaluate for years if you like. So something must have changed. Any Pc updates? Did you try a new install? Just throw your app in the trash and download a fresh trial. www.jamorigin.com/download/
@@lofileif I tried many times , desinstall the App , and the UMC driver , and the very strange that is It is the same on my 3 PC , so I can imagine it is my UMC interface , but it seems to be recognise ,light is on , and have the guitar audio sound on the amplifier , Whant to be shure before eventlly a new interface
Hey man! Way just going to suggest you post in the MIDI Guitar forum, and I saw you already did. I believe that is the best way to move forward, since there is a lot of knowledgeable users in there. Best of luck! 👍
Do you have a link for the 3 pedal USB controller? Thank you!
Oh, that is not a USB pedal I'm afraid. It is my Kawai F-30 that I use with my Kawai VPC-1. So it goes into my keyboard controller and from there it is USB. But here is a link anyway. www.amazon.com/Kawai-F30-Triple-Pedal-MP-11/dp/B01JN6CMAM

Hi LoFiLeif... I'm finally considering buying the Tec breath controller. Considering the price difference between the Breath model and the Breath AND Bite model, and due to my finances' limitations, I'm wondering whether it's really worth it for me to get the Breath + Bite model.
Do I get that right the the Bite allows to control a whole other, separate function. So for instance, if the Breath is assigned to the volume of a given synth sound, can the Bite be assigned to the sound of another synth? Or the Breath and Bite can only be assigned to different parameters of a single synth?
As you can see, I'm not that clear about what the Bite can do and whether it's a needed investment for me. The Breath control definitely is. You make it amply clear in all your videos that it adds a great deal to the playing feel of any virtual sound, which is the main thing I'm interested in. To be honest, I'm not too fond of the idea of looking like an alien when using the TEC and playing live, but then, looks are not everything. 🙂
Yes, you assign any of the FOUR sensors in whatever way you like! czcams.com/video/fnj5Q_kjpdM/video.html
@@lofileif To the same patch/instrument, or even different ones simultaneously?
And would you say, given your experience and your actual use of it, that the Bite function is a must?
I wrote " To the same patch/instrument, or even different ones simultaneously?" That should read "separately" since you can obviously assign them to multiple patches all at once. So I'm wondering whether one can control the volume of a given patch, while assigning the Bite to a different patch.
When you assign a sensor (breath or bite, tilt or nod) to something by choosing a CC value in the software that it comes with, you are just saying " send this information on this channel". Any patch or instrument set up to listen to that particular channel (CC) will be controlled. So if you have two instruments opened on two different tracks in your DAW both set to listen/react to that CC, both will be affected. You can of course use breath for expression on one instrument and bite for another instrument expression simultaneously. The only thing you can't do is use the same CC value for two sensors. You can't have both breath and bite send CC11 on MIDI Channel 1. But usually you can decide what value you want your instrument to use for expression, on the actual instrument. So, yes, to whatever kind of setup you can come to think of.
When it comes to advice on what to purchase, you are going to have to decide for yourself. I can only inform you guys about the functions, and show you how I use it. I use mine almost every day, and half of the time I use more than one function. But only very rarely do I use all four.
Hello. Do you know of any open source software that recognizes MIDI guitars?
Hi man! I really don't know how to answer your question until I know a little bit more. What MIDI Guitar are you thinking of? I would say that any MIDI Guitar that is not a total scam send out MIDI to some extent. And there is obviously a lot of open source synths that recognize MIDI. Like Surge XT for example. But I feel there is something more specific you are looking for?
@@lofileif yeah so there's this game called YARG that uses certain game controllers as real instruments, but they're really just MIDI guitars. I was hoping to find a software that recognizes MIDI guitars, and look at how they make the software recognize MIDI guitars to use that knowledge to include support for all MIDI guitars on YARG.
So, how do these send MIDI? Bluetooth? USB? Any software you normally would connect a MIDI controller of any kind to should be fine really?
@@lofileif I think it's either MIDI or USB.
Well the software would have to be open source so people could look at the code
I guess you are asking about an open source DAW to use your MIDI Guitar in. And there seems to be a few options. Just google "open source DAW", but if your guitar is already sending out MIDI, what are you looking for in the code?

For $100 more you can get Fishman Tripleplay Connect. This bit of software is MASSIVELY overpriced. It's unfortunate. I think there are a lot of kids out there with $30 they can spend who would get a kick out of this.
I've heard a lot of good things about Fishman Triple Play in general. For me, I don't like how the dynamics and pitch detection work for slides/bends on the softest dynamic level. And I certainly don't want to use any cable between my guitar and my computer (as with the Connect). To each his own. I don't think however JamOrigin would be able to stick to their lifetime licenses with free upgrades at a price like that. It is simply not a sustainable business model, would be my best guesstimation.
