    I have a bad feeling about that. Harrenhal was considered impregnable until dragons came. I feel George has intentionally built up it's reputation, in order to break them down in a spectacular end. That goes for Winter fell and the wall, which are said to be protected by powerful ancient spells. Most of these formidable monuments will fall by either Danny's, Euron's or white walkers' machinations.

      Most castles had at least one if not a number of sally ports. If the Tyrell's really wanted to stop Robert then they would have just chased his forces after beating him at Ashford; instead they went to Storm's End and laid siege. Also, the Tyrell's had the largest army in westeros and Storm's End only had a small defense force; he COULD have just left a few thousand men to maintain the siege and sent he bulk of his forces after Robert, or to join the Rheaygars forces at the trident. Eyrie. You have to take 4 impregnable castles to reach eyrie, and you still have to take eyrie itself, which is stronghold sitting on the highest peak of vale. Only way to take it is waiting till everyone dies from starvation. You can't take highgarden, eyrie, winterfell, storm's end, harrenhal and casterly rock by using force.

    • @jay-1800
      @jay-1800 Před rokem +6

      I don’t know about all that. You can’t even stay at the Eyrie during winter. All the occupants have to move to the lower castles.
      The castles going up to the Eyrie aren’t impregnable they’re just very inconvenient. The higher up you go the less impressive they become only the first two are actual castles the others are more like towers overlooking the passes up the mountain.
      Plus half those castles listed at the bottom can be taken by force.
      High garden is just a big castle nothing special about it.
      We’ve literally seen Winterfell being taken by force.
      Storms End could’ve been taken from Stannis during Robert’s Rebellion had Mace not been feasting and partying the whole time. They would’ve won and the garrison starved had Davos not smuggled them supplies. Plus sample chapters from Winds would suggest it’s already been captured by Faegon and Connington.
      Harrenhal isn’t even worth trying to defend nor is it particularly viable.
      Casterly rock is solid though.

Once Ned Stark showed up the Tyrell’s gave up without a fight so the odds of it being a real siege were pretty slim

      Casterly Rock is the best overall castle. Can keep larger stores of supplies for long sieges. The Eyrie can’t sustain itself for long and isn’t habitable in Winter. Storm’s End would have fallen if Davos hadn’t been able to smuggle food in. Against dragons, Casterly Rock is the only one that can deal with dragon fire. Even Visenya thought Casterly Rock could withstand dragons.

    Stannis's action doesn't make sense in both show & books. He lost his army after the battle of blackwater & his next move is try to seize the north from the Boltons? The north hardly have much fighting men after the red wedding & it's already clear the northern house will never support a foreigner.
    Sensible & rational move is for Stannis to go back to the Stormlands & try to raise an army there. Storm's end also provides a perfect shelter against any invasion.

    Of course Storm's End is alot cooler in the books. So is Winterfell..The Vale..Casterly Rock..Dragonstone...
    Hell, the entire story in general is just infinitely better in the books. That's almost always the way it goes with stories that have been taken from novels and adapted to be turned into movies or TV shows.
    The books are always better. It's simply not possible for a movie or TV show to tell a story the way its told in a series of 800+, 900+, 1000+ page books. There are just too much information, too many bits and pieces of details that are important to the story universe, and the development of the story plot and its characters, as well as all of the inner dialogs of the characters themselves. It's just impossible to cram it all in to a movie or TV series in a way that would work.
    I've been reading these books in particular since '98 or '99. And I strongly urge anyone who is interested in the story to read the books, and not go off of the TV show. The real story in the books is just so much better.
