42. New Zealand campervan holiday Part 3: north of the North Island

- After a few days in a hotel in Auckland I picked up my tiny one-person campervan and headed north. I had watched lots of CZcams videos about places to visit and drawn up a long list. This was going to involve lots of driving. In this episode I see a big tree, slide down some sand dunes, and take a ferry trip.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

I really need to make it to the lighthouse when kiwis can travel again... great to see.
David our roads are quite quaint! Our land area is slightly larger than that of the UK which has 68 million living upon it, we have 5 million. So our road infrastructure is reflective of that. Makes exploring back roads fun!
with the towel you pop end in the top of the window and wind up the window so it holds the towel for you 😊
In the future, open the window, hang your towel over the window and then roll the window up, keeps it from blowing away in a breeze
Great little trip - love your sense of humour; great storytelling and well put together videos
So many people are going camper vanning around New Zealand these days. There is some spectacular scenery there. Thank you for this vicarious adventure.
You talk about difficult N Z roads. My wife and I spent 2 month end of last year in a vw camper van in the UK and drove 4000 miles. A lot of the roads there are absolutely diabolical. Parking horrible. Absolutely beautiful though but I was very happy to hand the van back and get in a train. Didnt even try and drive in France. They drive funny.
Bill great comment, however, you have never taken a bus trip down the Amalfi Coast in Italy have you. If you had, you would have never have forgotten the inching, creeping, stopping, inching some more, and finally able to move two feet before starting the process all over again. I would love to drive in both UK and NZ and with all of the trouble we had South of Naples, I still loved Italy. Fragrance of Memories. Sometimes it is those special difficult roads that make the best memories.
@@jerryodell1168 Sounds very much like the Chichester "bypass" in the holiday season, except that's the least characterful part of that road (the A27) to start with. Or getting past Arundel in any rush hour. But when it's not busy, I love the A27. I wonder how much it's changed in the 8 or 9 years since I last drove it. Traffic certainly increased over the previous 20 years.
Makes me glad i can travel the world in my old age , Places i could not manage to visit now , Thank you very much.
Yes, you were able to incorporate a water adventure into your van adventure. A busman’s holiday. Thanks for sharing.
Everything looked so crisp and free, what a wonderful place'
Thanks David, for sharing your holiday with us lot! Some lovely shots, fascinating ocean and sea view. Definitely another world away in more ways than one. Thanks . Joan 👍👏😷
Ernie must be the greatest guy! I’ll have to be sure to visit that place if I’m ever visiting New Zealand!
Thank you David for the exhilarating sand board ride and the lovely ocean views. New Zealand looks beautiful and you are doing a wonderful job of showing it to us. Take care and stay well.
I’ll never get over how beautiful New Zealand is and how amazing you are at documenting everything you do David!
Thank you :-)
That handbrake crack made me really lol.
Someone else suggested this same thought on how to a dry a wet item; lower a window down just enough to "catch" the item. It should dry. I really enjoyed my visit to New Zealand. Hope you get another chance to return.
Goodbye cruel world: Elvis Costello! Loved the dune surfing, you daredevil you!
Crazy, huh?
Looks a great place to visit. That eccentric farmer looks like my kind of person. I love those strange exhibits on his grass and the smallest church. It's all very arty I suppose. It's the kind of exhibits that Billy Connolly would love too, LOL. 😁
It's a beautiful place to visit - be prepared for the scenery to change very regularly.
Ernie is living his best life, while the rest of us just try. 😆
Brilliant vlog, David!
Thank you so much for sharing!
👍✌😘
Absolutely magnificent! Thank you.
this program was enjoyable.thank you for sharing . cheers
RE: drying your towel on the car door: Next time, try opening the car window, draping the towel over it, and then closing the window.
Ta
When you went to Dargaville from SH1 you went though the town I grew up in, it is the first town on that road. I think in the early days the road workers were paid by the corner up that end of the country, lol. Went to the top on a bus and the driver said there were summer toilets there, summer for women and summer for men and have always remembered that from 40 years ago. Really enjoyed this video bro you went to places I have never been yet I have been in NZ all my 66 years. Keep safe up your way.
Welcome back David
Hello!
Thanks for taking us along for the ride. I really enjoyed it.
My favorite part was the ferry.
Happy Camping
ive seen some boring videos but this is in the top 10,i do like your vids
Camping tip for next time you need to dry a towel over a car door (you’d be surprised how often that happens)... roll the window down and put it in, then roll the window up to hold it... that way the wind won’t blow it off
Very enjoyable viewing
Thanks for bringing back fond memories David! Such a beautiful country.
That was a interesting trip David.......stay safe.....thanks for sharing
I kept getting warnings from people to look out for slupps on the road. I had no idea what they were talking about until I found a place where half the road was gone. The traffic controller explained that there had been a few slupps like this. Roughly translated land slide or slip.
Dude the trick to towel drying in cars is trap one end in the top of the window
Excellent video as always. Beautiful scenery!
Glad you had fun while here. I tried sliding down the dunes a few years back, was fun. One of the guys somehow managed to go much further than the others and lightly hit the side of the bus. The rain here is quite something, we get a lot at times. Some say we get four seasons in a day.
Ouch!!
Super entertaining video -- as always, David! Don't forget that it's THE North Island and THE South Island (always with the definite article). The exception being where I live in the rural South Island, where people say The Mainland (i.e. the South Island) and The Island (i.e. the other bit of NZ). Of course, you can also say the rather more melodious Te Ika-a-Māui and Te Waipounamu.
They only get the definite article in actual sentences and such though. It's not part of the names, just the "proper" way to use them. Likewise, we treat the North and South Islands as places rather than objects, so say things are "in the North Island" or "In the South Island", rather than on them, just as one would for the country as a whole (or the Kingdom, for that matter, if anyone ever talked about that...). The various smaller islands still get "on" though.
I thought out in the wops they say did you marry into the family?
Great video, makes me feel better about being alone under lock-down. Stay safe and well! M
I keep grinning at the license plate on your campervan. LUL is dutch slang for man sausage.
We learn something every day. Might have to remember that one to use when I want to use the English but inappropriate.
That reminds me of when we used to slide down a hill two up on a car bonnet. Morris Minor, I think it might have been.
Lovely land. I lived there for 3 months in the winter(their summer) of 90/91. ...in Wellington. ..and with a little trip up to Auckland and back with a Kiwi friend. I loved it there then, people so friendly.
From the "Forrest of Endor", to a "boaty adventure", to surfing down a mountain of sand. You certainly did make the most of your trip, didn't you?
I tried, would have done more if not cut short :-(
Crikey, those were some massive tree trunks!
Thanks for another interesting vlog. When I last saw that tree (1970's) you could walk up to it and touch it. I should go back for another look.
ha ha how very brave sand surfing whoopie
We stood at the base of enormous Tane Mahuta on March 5, 2020, which we imagine preceded your visit by no more than a couple of weeks. Again, it was frustrating to have missed you by such a short amount of time, but so glad you experienced some of the same things we did. Wish we'd been able to make it all the way up to the lighthouse at the northern tip of the North Island, but we just didn't have time to go that far up, since we planned to spend most of our time on the South Island. For what it's worth, having seen many giant sequoias up close and personal, including the General Sherman tree in Sequoia National Park (which is the single largest living thing on planet Earth), we didn't expect much from the "Big Tree" but we sought it out anyway. We were duly impressed. That thing is indeed gigantic. We weren't the least bit disappointed!
I remember driving through a massive tree in California with a pal I did a road trip with back in 2003 ish; they'd cut a hole wide enough for the road in the trunk. Huge great thing it was.
My word, what beautiful nature - NZ is amazing and I feel a pull to visit.
Your vlog brought back lovely memories of our very recent trip to NZ. Went to the lighthouse, Kauri forest and sand dunes. Looking forward to your next one - sailing through the hole on the rock?Must have just missed you!
Marvelous views. I think I would like living in New Zealand. Forest, fields, Mountains, Sea, Beaches, Farms, Ocean. All close together.
1:16 Don't blink! :-)
Used to live there nice to see it again.
The ocean wanted to see the sea ..... Cheers from California
We used to trap our towels between the window and the frame It clamps quite well and can flap away merrily in even the strongest wind.
John from Australia.i am now watching your van video and being a cabinetmaker and have built a motor home from the ground up ,I thought this should be good as I had not long ago seen you put clothes hooks up .you amazed me bloody marvellous very enjoyable congratulations lovely job 👍👍
2:50 - make no mistake... there's plenty of straight roads that are genuinely "state highway"-like too!
To be fair, yes I did go along a lot of bits that were more recognisable as a main road!
Wickedly entertaining. TYVM
Looks amazing. Like the North West Highlands of Scotland / Assynt only warmer. You should think about that in your own van.
Have you never been to John O’Groats or Lands End? Both these are where the Atlantic Ocean meets either the North Sea or the English Channel. Some times similar cross currents can be seen. The CZcams channel “All the Stations” did a trip and tour of both sites in one video. Even though I will never get there or NZ. Good show, young man!
No, I have not been to either of those places
The Kauri trees you mention survive very well buried in the swamps. I have a piece of Kauri carbon dated at 4000 years milled from a log from a swamp. Still in perfect condition.
Thank you David for a great vlog. New Zealand looks stunning. I am not much of a traveller, but New Zealand looks very appealing 👍👍😊
Lovely little video. The trees were spectacular (hope you get to see the Redwoods someday). Ah, a cheese sanny, we share a favorite snack/meal there. Thanks for sharing the New Zealand trip.
you'll be finding bits on sand in weird places for months
Music...really......
Nice scenery, shame about the sand.
Enjoyed the vlog, did think we may have seen you come off, but well done. Cheers.
You have a good life man.
Lovely vlog, thank you! Glad you are doing well😊
Great to see. Particularly interesting to see you in familiar territory.
Your wondering if your camper insurance covered the ferry reminded me of looking at the Anderton Lift sign in my hire boat 🤔
So glad my favourite travel youtuber dodged the coronavirus!
All the best David! 💕
Great vid bro, scenery looked appealing to me.
Drop window. Slide wet towel through. Shut window?
Obvious now I think about it
What a lovely vlog, thank you for sharing your experience David.
I believe your YT Friend, Traveling K, has done a vlog which included her on board that Ferry.
Excellent choice of background music.
I suppose that Dune Surfing would be good for folks with a fear of heights-
Many watersides are ladders/stairs up a tower that puts one way up above the ground,
whereas this has one standing on the ground to start the slide/surf
Quite high up peering over the side of the dune though!
Such an awesome part of the world!
Love New Zealand, thanks for taking me back...
A chance to do some vicarious "armchair travel" to a different part of the world is always welcome, particularly whilst we're all currently in lockdown. Cheers David !
A lot more tarmac road than when we were there..... 32 years ago:) Lovely to see your video, it brought back great memories. Doubt there was a ferry ban on your hire agreement, but very likely a prohibition on driving on the '90 mile' beach as too many get stuck.
Thanks, David.
Great video, I've watched cruising the cut for 3 years but only found this channel a week back and love it! Also New Zealand is so beautiful, thanks David.
Brilliant vlog Dave, thank you. That sand surfing looks a bit of a blast. The lack of traffic and people marvellous.
A bit of a short video.
But nevertheless beautiful images of New Zealand that bring back memories of when I was there 19 years ago.
And even some wonderful piano music!
Thank you David & stay safe ♥
Very nice landscape, and some beautiful piano music in the video. Thank you again for the entertainment.
Dargaville if I go across the island ia about an hour from me, the lookout at Omapere (Hokianga Harbour) is about 1.25 hours from me. Those rough track are actually our roads. That sanddunes is around 2 hours from where I live and they are a lot of fund but 3 climbs is my limit. Where you met up with karen is about 20 mins from where I live. Very much would have been good if I had been watching these vlogs when you were coming out here
Thank you for an entertaining New Zealand travel report. It's nice for us viewers to be able to get around a bit in these lockdown times:-)
Looking forward to the next part.
Daredevil David 😊....Amazing views, like you l had never seen a sea & an ocean come together either.
wow how interesting thanks for sharing... whew! look at trees on highway ,,,,
I enjoyed that, thank you. . ilona
lovely👍
wow thats beaut! ty david
Why didn’t you wind down the window and pass your towel half way through and then close the window? It would have stayed put! X loving the vlogs xx I always wanted to go to New Zealand and tour with a van. Those roads looked fab and the trees AMAZING 😉 x
Awesome trip. Can't wait until we can see the next one. If I ever go to New Zealand I might have to try that sand sled thing. I had fun just watching, but I am getting older, so I probably had more fun watching than actually sliding down the dunes myself.
Snowman Dan Selzer I would end up sliding right off the board and tumbling down the hill like a sack of taters.
It was getting up the dunes that was the hard part, the sand just slides out under your feet and you slip backwards and it gets steeper and steeper...
That looked quiet nice David - I'm glad I live here now ..
Wow, so nice and isolated and with so few people.
Beautiful vlog! Thanks!!
Lovely. If you like big trees, take yourself off to Africa and see some baobabs.
One day...
I'm glad you survived your "Sand Boarding" experience. It looked terrifying and I would never attempt it.
Great video ,love the scenery ,thank you
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Fabulous adventure! And if this was a recent trip, NZ has far fewer cases of covid-19. Stay safe. Have fun.
Cheers
I really miss Nee Zealand! We drove that route in 2015. Just wonderful! X
Another great video.
