About three weeks ago, the algorithm suggested I'd like this video. I follow Cruising The Cut for 9 months now. And that dude on the thumbnail, I swear, was looking just like that dude living on that narrow boat. So I gave it a click. I ended up binge watching your whole series of vlogs from the very beginning. Besides being entertaining, what you're doing is very inspiring. It's encouraging me stepping into the same direcction. To my surprise the conversion is no rocket science. The vlogs about the conversion gave me faith that I could do that. The vlogs about your journeys promissed my that it will be worth it. I'm a single dad of an 7 y.o. and thinking about how this opens up the world for the both of us in a very new way. I love your vids. You're doing a great job and it's far beyond just blogging. When I was seven I spent my first night alone in a tent in my backyard. It was thrilling: cat's meowing, dogs barking, coyotes howling, distant trains, the wind, strange people calling to each other across the backyards of the rowhomes, rustling trees and shrubs, animal noises and footsteps...I remember like it was yesterday and this was in the mid 1950's. I have heard and felt these things since then in many campsites but who can forget their first thrilling solo campout?

Oh, David, your anxiety-inducing videos are almost too much to bear! Just 59 seconds into the segment, I had to suffer through long seconds of dread as you opened your can of soup ONE HANDED and barely an INCH from the edge of the countertop! O, the humanity! What if you had slipped? Soup everywhere! Needless to say, I have recovered. A couple of deep breaths and my heart rate has dropped. Seriously, this is such a good example of making lemonade when life hands you lemons. Kind of nice to see how other people do their lockdown holidays :) Enjoy your van. I believe that the order you give your household does really mostly depend on personal preferences - be it the household in a house, a boat or a van. In a van the size of yours, there is the additional bonus that whatever you want to reach, most of the stuff is at arms length from your sofa/bed anyway. So, as long as you know where things are, it’s probably all right.
I hope you will be able to enjoy many more weekends and holidays in your van - perhaps even with a bit more of a journey there and back!

We (2 Seniors in San Diego CA) also binge watched your whole narrowboat series of videos, and absolutely loved them. We live in California, but did visit UK relatives in 2008. At that time we spent 9 days doing the Kennet and Avon locks and area in a narrowboat, that at one point had 7 people on board. It was an adventure we will always remember and love. And, with your series, it was so helpful during the lockdown here in CA.
Then we went to see your Vandemonium site...and enjoyed all of those as well. WE LOVED YOUR TRIP TO WALES. And very much enjoyed New Zealand. We did hear on another site, how stressful it was for you to get back home when the lock down started.
So...just to say we hope that you will continue to share your life journeys. We will watch. Thank you for doing it. And, we like Sebastiao Burnay's idea of the tolilet paper hanger inside/front/middle. Cheers!

A small storage box that hangs on the outside of a back door is handy for rubbish bags. Rubbish can accumulate quite quickly over several days away and some remote scenic locations have nowhere to dispose of them.
I put full bags in mine keeping them until I find a bin. It helps to keep fly's and wasps along with smells out of my van.
I keep fire lighters and charcoal for a barbeque in this box too, wasps and fly's don't like the smell lol.
I have a foldaway barbeque that's lightweight that fits easily with everything else.
Just an idea that might work well for you, especially in summer heat as waste food tins and drink cans draw fly's and wasps.
Good video David 👍 Oh' No need for a loo roll holder as it will probably get in the way of something at some point, Simply place it on the shelf beside you when you plan to use it.
My bathroom at home has no good place for one so that's how we roll 🤣
Shhhh, my van does have one, I've used the clothes rail above the toilet to hang it; I stand up and turn around as I would normally do anyway 👀

Your story about the census reminds of when I was flogging them there fruit-flavoured computers for a living. I had a regular customer - a well-known TV director - who lived on a houseboat on the Thames. His address was 'HB [Name of Boat], XYZ Marina, etc'. We kept getting his packages back, marked 'House not found'.
Eventually, by trial and error, we had to amend his address to 'Houseboat [Name of Boat], N.B. This is a boat, you'll find it floating on the water, XYZ Marina, etc'. The parcel returns stopped.

When I had my old transit campervan I had a metal ammo box fitted onto the exhaust manifold, into this potatoes would go, almost two hours of driving was more than enough to cook a jacket tattie. Occasionally I would put a home made loaf into it, 20 minutes down the road would produce a nice fresh loaf, and it would take 5 minutes to make a toasted cheese sarnie. This would work out well on trips to the coast so that freshly cooked hot food would be ready for when we arrived, traffic jams meant burned food.

For the water line, you can buy those U-shape thingies for the water outlet of washing machines for just a few pounds. Maybe one of those on the water line between water tank and tap?
The shelf you punt the bread on, if you make a horizontal bar to put in front off you could use it to store some thing (like your bread and other groceries) while driving.
If you are worried about any fluid spillage on the flour (i.e. the extra water tank, you can always put in an additional plastic layer on the bottom of the compartment which covers a few inches of the sides to (like a little bathtub). An easy and cheap solution for this is to use a garbage bag.

Thanks for the van tour. You are really well fitted out. Your little adventure makes me nostalgic for the years of camping fun I had with my family growing up. Keep safe and well Gloria 🐂

Hello from Florida, David. Thank you for sharing your exciting weekend at the car park!
I did have a few thoughts about your van set up, since you requested some. To save your self from attempting an Olympian dive into the front of the van, most headrests are removable and you could stow said headrest in the back until it is needed for a second passenger. I did that in my Honda Accord's middle backseat headrest (mainly because it blocked my short-self's view out the back window). In relation to your toilet roll placement. what about a vertical roll holder on a weighted base in the neighboring (now empty) compartment. It could hold 1 or 2 spares and would be handy. I know the compartment walls are thin and unable to hold screws.
Overall, I think your build is very creative and super successful! When one watches a youtuber for any length of time, it becomes tempting to think that you "know", them. one person's solution is seldom another's solution. That said, I think your setup seem to fit what I have seen of your style in your narrowboat. Organized, orderly, non-frilly, etc. I really think you've done a fantastic job on your cabinetry. The dark stain reminds me of the woodwork on the older wooden motorboats of the 1940's thru the 1960's. Very posh, but in the nicest way!
That's it, no more! I'm sure there are other comments you will wish to peruse! Stay safe over there!

At last! The gripping conclusion! You have proven that real adventure is a mindset, not a destination. Thank you for making this fabulous camping vlog! Idea: cut an opening, post slot style, in the vertical wall of the storage space next to the loo. Install a container on the inside to receive the trash. Bag liners in a box of any sort would work fine. Easy use but out of the way. Protects hanging jackets from leaky messes. Dusting mop could sit next to trash bin. Love the new cupboards and the clever door locks are brilliant!

by far the best thing you can fit to a camper van is fully rotating captains seats which will transform your van and the available living space. Secondly, head somewhere really beautiful as soon as you can. Great van build you've carried out there!

If you add a tin of new potatoes to a large tin of big soup it's a meal for 2 and doesn't use much gas to heat it up, with some thick crusty bread a nice warming meal.

Toilet roll holder suggestion... if you are going to be lifting the lid beside the toilet when using, why not screw the toilet roll holder to the underside of that lid and when you lift it up the toilet roll will be handily raised up and no stretching involved... love the videos sir, thank you.

You can even eat little veggie sausages direct from the pan in a van! 👍

Plumbing supply outlets sell springs of different diameters and 6-10 inches in length that are used to bend copper tubing without causing kinks. Put one of these springs over the kink in your water line and it should prevent it from kinking while still allowing it to bend.

    • @carycoombe3380
      @carycoombe3380 Před 3 lety

Exactly what I was thinking of. However, the ones I have have are made for fairly narrow diameter copper pipe. If you can find some sort of spring at your hardware store that fits snugly over that pipe, that should prevent "the kinks".
