1:54 "I went for a little chat with the boat captain, and told him about life on the narrowboat--whether he wanted to hear about it, or not." Hilarious! I laughed out loud! Thanks, David! I look forward to your next New Zealand campervan holiday video! Thanks again and take care!
I know you apologised in your other video that it was all shot on your phone and very basic. If you hadn't told me that I wouldn't have known, really great little video, shows not only how great phone cameras are but also that in the hands of a professional you can produce good looking videos with basic equipment. Look forward to the rest and glad you are home safe.
You got your New Zealand trip just in time. The world will never be quite the same again. Thanks for this see you again when you're back cruising the cut. John, Ontario, Canada.
Yes, on an iphone SE using the Filmic Pro app. The natural sound is poor due to problems with a mic I plugged in so had to use the phone's mic without a furry windshield on it (yuck)
OMG 😱I’ve found the New Zealand section. 🥳 🎉. Sadly the wrong island. You really need to visit what we call the mainland. The scenery is beyond amazing. If you love Wales then South Island New Zealand is your heaven. We call those who live in Auckland Jaffas. (Just another f***ing Aucklander) But I’m glad you enjoyed it. You certainly got to see some of the most beautiful parts. Looking forward to part 2, 3, 4.
Watching you cruising on your narrowboat and now watching you cruise thru the area I grew up in and left back in 1980 left so many memories. Thank you for allowing me to travel with you. Cheers Scotty, now in Canberra Australia
van is small but looks to have all you would need. Glad you got there...I saw on the other channel the trials that come next, glad you are home and safe! Thanks for taking me with you.
Quite a lot of vans with the kitchen setup in the rear like that here and seam to be the way to go for overseas travelers like yourself. Anyway nice to see our country from another prospective. All the best and stay safe up your way.
/me adds Auckland to his list of places to visit, somewhere between Norway's Atlantic Highway and... Hastings. I like Hastings, and want to go back there some day. Very good panning shots! I felt like I saw everything, and I didn't feel dizzy once.
Where your camper show was is where they were planning to have the World Science Fiction Convention in late July. Needless to say, it has been transformed into a Virtual convention, a first for WorldCon, should be interesting. Friends are scrambling to cancel travel plans.
"Kitchen" looks very much like one on a Teardrop camper here in the states. Glad to join you on the NZ trip, but, I like the narrowboat much more. Cheers to you.
A friend in Auckland told me that the extra traffic lanes that were bolted onto the bridge were installed by a Japanese company. The locals call it the Nippon Clip-on.
Done with a telephone or with a real camera, your videos always are of excellent quality and most enjoyable to watch and listen to. That small campervan may not have been the best around, but I thought that it was all fairly nicely done, and I even think that a small van like that would certainly find clients in our part of the world, but so far I've never seen anything that resembles this van. I could be completely wrong, and there may be thousands around here, without ever having been near enough to see one. Looking forward to the rest of this holiday of a lifetime, too late for me to still do that one day, unless I'm lucky in the lottery.
Very nice David. Well you went from a canal to open waters. Very nice views. Really enjoyed the boat ride. Liked thoughts apartments that looked like the boats. Oh what a nice place to stay it would be. Would like to try that bungee jumping. That view is wonderful. Your pan shots was just perfect. Your camper van looked like a bee from the back w/all those lines on it, reminds me of how they buzz around. But I guess it served it purpose. You just drive, cook, & sleep in it. Oh & see wee in it... lol... So sorry you spilled your milk. Oh I hate that. Looking forward to part 2. Have a great day David. Be safe & God bless us all from this virus, Chris from Missouri
I had something similar when I was travelling around NZ, (8 yrs ago) looks like they have upgraded the back kitchen section. I had a hi-top Toyota Hiace from Escape rentals, which had a cool box & ice blocks and a hand pump water tap. I only used it for rinsing things & used the campsite kitchen facilities.
I wasn't sure why this popped up on my alerts, until I heard your voice. I forgot I subscribed last week, because you do very good videos. Thanks for sharing. Glad you're home safe.
I really love this camper it would be perfect for me who likes travelling by myself i never really thought about converting a car you've definitely give me food for thought
Nice! Last year May, I went to the Republic of Georgia for 5 months to fly paragliders. I bought a Mercedes Vaneo 1.9 petrol auto, and did something similar but much simpler. I didnt bother with any cabinetry, just a single bed from the back door up to the back of the passenger seat, so I retained the front seat. Six little plastic veggie crates under the bed, the two at the back being the kitchen. I learned long ago... Dont cook in the van. Its cute tho. Concept is sound. Prefer the space in my Sprinter tho. Thanks for the entertainment. I dream of a life on the Cut. Keep it up.
We were there from 10 Dec - 7 Jan also renting from Mad Camper too. Our trip was in reverse as we picked the van up in Christchurch and dropped off in Aukland. We had a two seater/sleeper van which looks as though it was an easier set up than the single version. We sooo loved travelling around NZ although had to revise some of our journeys due to roads being closed due to earlier storms. This was a trip of a lifetime but would love to repeat it in the not too distant future.
Thank you David for the wonderful tour around the harbor and the camper van. This will be nice series of video I can tell already. Do take care and stay well.
I live in Auckland! There is plenty of other things here as well such as the Waitakere ranges and Piha Beach. We also have a number of awesome museums in Auckland besides the one on the Domain such as MOTAT(Museum of Transport and Technology) and the Maritime Museum.
Your video is an interesting watch, two points - [a] the underground railway is being constructed in the same way as the original undergrounds of London, dig a "big hole" construct what you need to, then back fill the dirt on top. This underground railway was proposed by a former Mayor - Sir Dove Meyer-Robson, back int he 1960's -70's, he was "laughed at", yet he had studied such systems around the world, including London and was convinced then it would work for Auckland - how time flies; the second [b] - the external lanes on the harbour bridge where manufactured in Japan, and became know as "Nippon Clip On's" as NZ did not have the engineering capabilities (then) to achieve such a build. For what journey's you achieved prior to having "escape lock down", I hope you enjoyed the trip. I hope you will be able to return in "saner times".
We call that technique cut and cover. The tube lines constructed by that means lie just under the surface and follow London's main roads. It was a massively destructive construction method though notwithstanding the severing of existing services running along roads such as sewers, gas and water mains. It was replaced fairly early on by a shield boring technique. Imagine a huge wooden ring on its side with tunnellers inside digging at the clay. The ring was moved forwards into the space created in front of it. London is built on clay north of the Thames and chalk to the south, hence the tube network is mainly in the north with the southern parts running above ground where possible.
Good to see your first NZ vlog. It looks like you sure had some great weather in the first week. You certainly showed Auckland at it's best, thank you for showing the world what it's like down here. Good to see you at the meet up, cool to see us all in the view of the people that were there.
Hi David. Silly fun fact: when the were building the extra lanes onto the harbour bridge, we called them the "Nippon Clipons". Nice to see my home town again. I've been in Australia noe for thirty years. Look forward to your next chapter. Cheers, Mark.
I found the bit about the new underground train line interesting, as in Ottawa our first one opened about a year ago. Hopefully they won't have as many issues as we did.
Thanks for this! I really enjoyed seeing every nook and cranny of the van, just like I do with your boat. I know that's not traditionally considered good content for videos but I'm not watching traditional BBC or PBS am I?
Very neat little camper van! Very well designed and efficient... not sure it would be ideal in bad weather but I suppose one could take a tarp with them to toss over the open hatch to make more of a sheltered cooking area. Still not ideal.
Lucky you got your trip in just in time to come home and isolate. I've always wanted to visit New Zealand. Too late now even after the plague. Can't fly long distances any longer. Old bird, tired wings.😉😎
Great to see you came down under,it’s been a while since our chat whilst moored on the cut at Braunston.I had a stroke there not long after so now am back in Kiwi.take care
Wonderful video! So looking forward to the rest of the vlogs of your trip ♥ I was in New Zealand 19 years ago. Am curious to see the changes. Auckland still looks the same tho.
one of the biggest differences is apartments - not just built as apartments but commercial buildings converted and many in actual city.... we still have our harbours and of course boats...but many more people living in the region (I'm out West)
I trust you enjoyed your journey - from comments it semms only the North Island, was driven. I trust, you were able to get over the Strait & tour the South. Should you come out again, get an Atlas, as I suspect Google maps, hasn't been over a lot of the more 'attention needed' roads - the attention, is due to the road width & oncoming traffic, plus, what's at the roadside - clifs, up, & down, or just plain country lane type.
Wonderful start to the holiday. NZ is gorgeous as ever (sigh...). I'm tempted to donate an additional quid on Patron just for the phrase "vomit-inducing" ;-P
Nice van.... My Fiat Uno is about... 6 times smaller! But I have 2 front seats... a similar size bed... a floor to hang my feet down from the bed... To be honest... my Uno is as big inside as your Narrowboat... BUT 20 times smaller on the outside! Park your van next to a Uno, take a photo and then watch my videos.
It used to be quite rare in the UK, typically only high end executive cars were auto and most drivers would sneer at it. Factoid. Banana's in the Southern Hemisphere curve to the left while those north of the equator curve to the right.
Hahahahahaha

Ah back to what David does best - well-described & well edited videos. And not a Christmas jumper anywhere in sight !! 😎😱
Nice little compact camper van and good to see that you know where your towel is! :-)
You got your New Zealand trip just in time. The world will never be quite the same again. Thanks for this see you again when you're back cruising the cut.
John, Ontario, Canada.
Funny, we pretty much Skipped Auckland and saw the entire rest of the country. Will have to go back one day.
Fascinating, thanks for sharing. And all this was filmed on a mobile phone? Incredible! Looking forward to the next episodes. Cheers.
Yes, on an iphone SE using the Filmic Pro app. The natural sound is poor due to problems with a mic I plugged in so had to use the phone's mic without a furry windshield on it (yuck)

Thanks to the strategically placed bananas all imgurians can tell exactly how big everything is. 👍👍👍
Great to see NZ from another’s eye. So sorry your trip was curtailed by Covid-19
Watching you cruising on your narrowboat and now watching you cruise thru the area I grew up in and left back in 1980 left so many memories. Thank you for allowing me to travel with you. Cheers Scotty, now in Canberra Australia
So...I'm migrating from the CruisingTheCut here. Start seeing all episodes from the beginning as I did for CruisingTheCut. Thank you!
Whenever I listen to David's voice I always feel he is the natural heir to Brian Cant's throne.
How sad everything has changed so much! Everyone seemed so happy at the meetup and now this. Thank you for a lovely view of what we once had.
van is small but looks to have all you would need. Glad you got there...I saw on the other channel the trials that come next, glad you are home and safe! Thanks for taking me with you.

The park you were in was probably Auckland Domain.
Ahhhhhhhh Home!
Whole heartedly thank you for sharing that!

What a cozy li'l van. And NZ looks spiffing!
You really do need a theme song for your Vandemonium Channel just like you do with the ending of your narrowboat channel.
New Zealand is the closest thing to Shangri-La there is on earth. Thanks David!
Where your camper show was is where they were planning to have the World Science Fiction Convention in late July. Needless to say, it has been transformed into a Virtual convention, a first for WorldCon, should be interesting. Friends are scrambling to cancel travel plans.
Probably appropriate that a SciFi convention should be held by view screen!!

True!
I rather liked that little camper van.
The tour of the city was very interesting.
Thanks for taking us along.
Cheers
I loved New Zealand. Lived in Wellington for a year. You'll have to go back and do the South Island.
I hope so, one day

The clouds and sky like a painting in every shot! Fantastic!
Thank you David. So glad to see you back home and online. Hope you stay well after experiencing all the travelers you had to pass by en-route.
A well fitted out #krampervan... But at least the steering wheel is on the correct side!
I wasn't sure why this popped up on my alerts, until I heard your voice. I forgot I subscribed last week, because you do very good videos. Thanks for sharing. Glad you're home safe.
What a fantastic adventure. Glad you managed to get home OK.
Covi Insurance, how prophetic, considering Covid-19 resulted in your early return to "Mother England". Pity your time in Oz was so transient.
I do enjoy seeing your perspective of NZ😀
Haha wait til the touring videos ;-)
Thanks, David. Neat to see the van.
you sound different on these videos, I like the way you work through the processes, it much like an instruction manual to assemble some gadget
I really love this camper it would be perfect for me who likes travelling by myself i never really thought about converting a car you've definitely give me food for thought
I really enjoyed the camper too
Cute van!
...a superfantasticwonderful surprise trip! NARROWBOAT TO NZ!
I like what we've seen of NZ so far. Great video! Be safe on the road!

Loved the video. Although small, the camper van was quite nice. I especially liked the “kitchen.” I look forward to more videos of your adventures.
Gorgeous wee van. Couldn't help noticing the Lurpak , impeccable taste, my sister is freaking out because she cant get any . Ok ….next episode !
I found the bit about the new underground train line interesting, as in Ottawa our first one opened about a year ago. Hopefully they won't have as many issues as we did.
We have issues with it.
Great little vlog 😃 Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures in NZ. Glad you managed to make it back ok 😃
Have to say that I like your own van a bit better !! 😁
No I am pretty sure it would catch you doing that as well. That's what those ropes are made for after all...
I can only imagine how invigorating that view was after so long in an airplane.
Thank you David. A lovely insight, enjoyed it very much. Best wishes
Thanks for this! I really enjoyed seeing every nook and cranny of the van, just like I do with your boat. I know that's not traditionally considered good content for videos but I'm not watching traditional BBC or PBS am I?
Very enjoyable, looking forward to more. Thank you, cheers.
THANKS AGAIN DAVID. NICE TO SEE SOMETHING WITH NO MENTION OF THE VIRUS.
KILTED BILL no mention until yours.
Missed your videos. Looking forward to this series. Enjoy the lock down.
Thank you David! Such a great travel vlog!
Really enjoyed that vlog David.......bring on part 2.......stay safe......thanks for sharing
Great little camper👍
It was!
I do like the design of that camper-van it looks very good. It must have been a good 2 weeks exploring New Zealand 👍
Very good, NZ is a great place to visit (or live :-)
It was lovely, for sure
Very neat little camper van! Very well designed and efficient... not sure it would be ideal in bad weather but I suppose one could take a tarp with them to toss over the open hatch to make more of a sheltered cooking area. Still not ideal.

Hello again, I remember our meeting. Sorry to hear about your stroke, I hope you have recovered so far as is possible?
Vandemonium hi,yes thanks I had stunning NHS care and after care,I’m mobile as much as possible.take care and keep safe
Glad to see you got back ok
I was about to go and paint a new picture but....it can wait! 🙂
Thank you very much.

@@Vandemonium it would be nice, were you able to venture around it. A very different place to drive, and a very different place to veiw.
I think the big seats at the front are called First Class, David. A lovely video as always. I wish we could get out in our van 🙁
Wonderful start to the holiday. NZ is gorgeous as ever (sigh...). I'm tempted to donate an additional quid on Patron just for the phrase "vomit-inducing" ;-P
Lovely little van!
I’m curious for you next video to see how a micro van worked or didn’t work out for the trip.
Not the next vlog but maybe a future one
Vandemonium I’m sending it was 6/10, can’t wait for the videos. Welcome home
Wait for it just a second, please. I'm going to make myself a cup of tea first.
Wonder how many people are going to watch this video, then nick / copy the details and layout of the van, and do their own micro camper conversion...?
Cheeeeeessse of course
Of course!
Hi that was great and loved you had fun there nigel
Awesome David!
Nothing wrong with panning shots, when carried out with your degree of skill.
Great video look forward to the next👍
Great vlog as always! Cheers!
One day I’ll maybe get to enjoy seeing New Zealand! Hope you had a blast!
I did, albeit cut short :-(
One day I hope to return and finish my holiday!
Do visit, it's like nowhere else on earth - we have beaches, geothermal pools, rivers, lakes, subtropical rainforests & tundra type landscapes.
It's a shame that your lifetime trip ended the way it did! But at least there's a great story you can tell your grandchildren ... 🙂
Great video, thanks!
Nice to see some places around Auckland I'd not seen before. Camper looked good too.
Hooray! NZ at last.
Very well done sir. I am sorry you had to leave early. Let us know how you are doing.
Nice van.... My Fiat Uno is about... 6 times smaller! But I have 2 front seats... a similar size bed... a floor to hang my feet down from the bed... Much more space as a Uno is larger inside than the outside... Much larger cooling space for cold stuff... milk can stand upright... AND with a 1100 cc motor beat the fuel pumps! great vlog looking forward to more ty
I chuckled at the mention of the auto transmission. A manual transmission in a rental here in the states would cut the customer base by 98%.
It used to be quite rare in the UK, typically only high end executive cars were auto and most drivers would sneer at it. These days it's definitely becoming more commonplace and less of a thing to laugh at although the majority of UK cars are still manual. Of course, once we're all electric in a few years it'll be a moot point.
