53. Visiting Stroud and Gloucester in the campervan

- The van had to go for its annual MoT safety check and immediately afterwards I needed to visit Stroud to look at a roundabout, then onto Gloucester for some canal filming. So I made this vlog of the journey.

The US has some of the most spectacular natural splendor - Yellowstone, glacier national, river of no return, Yosemite, everglades, Appalachia and Appalachian trail, white mountains green mountains smokey mountains, the pallouse, Rockies.

I very much enjoyed this one David. I am always so impressed with how the British people really pour in their resources to preserve and to protect their historical heritage. I love the little English villages with those old houses and small shops, they are so peaceful, quiet and clean compared to the big cities.

I'm still amazed at how narrow those roads are and how quickly everyone drives on them!! Then again, being in North America maybe we're just spoiled and used to having so much extra space? That was a very nice little venture, and the educational portion once again greatly appreciated!
Bear in mind the extreme wide angle of the lens makes it look as though I’m going a lot faster than in reality!

I used to work on Gloucester docks in a Thames Barge converted to a restaurant. Around 1990 I think. Time flies. They'd just started renovating the docks, it looks so good. Thanks for sharing this, it brought some happy memories.

Remember this from far too long ago. Always wondered why middle and puddle were supposed to rhyme. Seems that piddle used to mean little stream, which makes much more sense. So there's speculation that it was changed to puddle sometime back.

Leaving an open air concert in North Norfolk , I once told my Garmin to choose the most “direct route”.
We spent an hour on the unmetalled local byways, including a tour of the back gardens of a row of cottages.
Fortunately by the time we reached a proper road (3 miles from the venue!), the traffic had cleared!
Was quite pleased to see you visiting the canals being restored that way, I took a cycle trip along those canals and stayed at that very campsite ealier this year inspired to go and see more of the canals around the west in no small part (mainly) by your cruising the cut channel! They wer not lying about the low water pressure!
Most enjoyable trip. Can’t get over how quiet the roads were regarding traffic. Beautiful scenery and colours. Clean looking docks. But very quiet. Thank you for taking us with you.
Isn't it surreal? Those docks that must have been bustling, the cranes, railroad cars, boats, narrowboats all bustling to and fro. It must have been thumping with life and the creaks, revving engines and shouts that come with it. I think I prefer our current ways but the sterile shipping containers and precise crane movements with the crackle of radios can't compare, can it?
It may have been a hot mess of metal, men and mayhem but it was a community that demanded participation should you meander through. Hm.

I wish MOT's were mandatory here in Alaska. It would certainly clear the roads of 'beaters with heaters' !
Two weeks ago I was travelling to an overnight stop in Tewkesbury, on my way through to the Brecon Canal. Normally I stop in one of the excellent free car parks in Herefordshire towns, but decided to spend the evening by the river at Lower Lode C&C park Nr Tewkesbury. My Garmin tried v hard to drive me crazy through the tiniest lanes and ultimately tip me into the river!!😲😃

Fantastic video David. I was lured here funnily enough because I strangely thought it might be about the Gloucester and Stroud in Australia... you know the one north of another Aussie city called Newcastle..(you probably haven't heard of them)... but I was delighted by the error and so glad to see the the UK is valuing it's canals and it's old industrial architecture which I consider just beautiful. If I lived there again a flat overlooking a canal would do me fine. If travelling is ever allowed again.
Oddly enough, I had heard of the Aussie Stroud and Gloucester and Newcastle - never been there though.

Love these trips in your campervan videos. I get to go to places without leaving home. Although wish I had actually been there for that coffee and chocolate cake.
6:55 Bit of possibly very helpful advice, you really need not even own a dedicated satnav anymore. Using a combination of phone apps is FAR superior. Personally I use just two, an app called "Waze" and the google maps app. Waze does 98% of the work and then I'll use the google maps app for when signal is very (and I mean very) poor as the google maps app works with the most meagre drop of signal. Waze is especially fantastic because it has a feature for users to mark hazards such as bad traffic jams, broken down cars on the hard shoulder, crashes etc. Other users mark them then that information will be used to improve your journey, most of the time it will simply warn you of the hazard however if it's something that could cause real problems, like a long jam it'll re-route your journey to completely avoid it. If using apps really isn't something you're interested in however then something else a surprising amount of people don't know is that you can, and should, go to the manufacturers website and see if there are any updates for your particular satnav model. You can then plug the device into your computer and update it, these updates can come with a surprising amount of improvements and added features.

Your comment about Garmin back roads resonates for TomTom users as well; they have a habit of finding single track lanes even in counties with lots of better roads. A setting to avoid them would be a welcome bonus.

You were in my neck of the woods here. If I’m not mistaken, but that campsite is near Arlingham. There’s a great walk by the River Severn and a lovely pub called the Red Lion.

Fancy that. Going for a trip without any provisions. Next it will be your trusty satnav to help you get around you'd have left behind. Still you could always use the old way and have a map put away in an empty cupboard that was meant for food stuff. Just in case. 🤣

I always have a paper map aswell as my Garmin. Gives u a clue when to ignore it.

Hi David, love to see your travels. Have to thank you for visiting Hay on Wye. I am a bibliophile and would see Hay on Wye as heaven on earth. My husband worded up his nephew when he and his husband visited Wales. His nephew assured me that he did not see one bookshop there. I find that pausing a video to read text in videos can sometimes get the dread red timeline marker. If one is using an computer to access the youtube videos if one presses down on the prt scn key this will capture an image of that text. Then one can use whatever image viewing software that one uses and paste the image. It makes viewing the text easier. At least for me. At 66 my eyes are not as sharp as they once were. Then one can increase the image size to enhance smaller text.

If you’re ever in the area again, have a look for the ‘hulks’ on the edge of the Severn near where you camped. Quite special in a sad sort of way. Also Gloucester cathedral is spectacular (as a cathedral and the cloisters featured in Harry Potter movies too!)

I have a similar problem with my Garmin, though to be fair, living in Devon most of our roads are windy country lanes so it's not entirely the satnavs fault. A pre prepared route plan makes trips much easier we have found as well as good old fashioned map book. The sat nav is mostly used to get us out of trouble when we take a wrong turn or navigate us around traffic jams which it does very well. When it does die though I won't buy another, phones are just as good these days.

And yes, these are visitor moorings in Gloucester. We used to stop there on our way down to Bristol - a trip you reallx should do one day, although a pilot once told us it might be even more fun going the other way (Portishead to Sharpness).

Thanks for showing me around Stroud, Glos etc. I'm missing it badly as my flight tickets home were cancelled over a year ago. My sister lives in Stroud and on my 3 month stays in the UK I spend a few weeks there, testing the local brews, getting exercise climbing the hills. Did consider buying a wide beam from a boatyard near the Severn but could not agree a price.
On one of my visits I went aboard a trip boat in Glos docks, it happens to be a Dunkirk Little Ship and I read some where an elephant went onboard for a ride but the crew knew nothing of it. Plus it's the only Dunkirker I've been on that didn't have any beer.
The dry dock you showed was in a boatyard that specialised in repairing old sailing ships, my younger brother popped in and asked the owner if he needed a caulker, the owner was astounded by that as he'd had to train all his guys. My brother in fact caulker tunnels under the River's Severn and Why.
It would be good to see the canal finished through Stroud and perhaps take a trip on it in a future UK visit.
