  • On December 29th, some wonderful friends I used to work in Kent with decided to have a catch-up and meal at a local pub, and I was invited along too. I went down in the campervan and stayed overnight on the road overlooking the sea. Before I left in the morning, I went for a quick tour of the seafront. This is the video of that trip (obviously)
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

Thank you for having the Twix candy bar. I worked at Mars as a maintenance technician and Twix was the candy line that I started on. You are helping fund my retirement. And thanks for the walk about Deal and the short, but interesting, history lesson. I'll likely never see Deal, but you have given me some insight. Especially interesting was the bit about the pier build being botched. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for that little trip to Deal. It brings back some early memories for me as a little boy in short trousers
around 1949/50 when my aunt Flo took me, my sister and a cousin for a holiday. (I think my baby brother had just arrived!) The highlight for me was a trip in a boat called Arcadia, like the clinker type one on the beach in your video. We went out to see the wrecks on the Goodwin Sands. It was strange to see the funnels and masts of several ships there sticking up out of the water. Very spooky. I usually watch your Cruising the Cut videos but had to watch this as I've not been back to Deal since. Glad you enjoyed meeting your friends. Thanks, good video.

I enjoy your narrowboating vlog very much, and shall be taking my daughter and family on a narrowboat cruise in April. Your van vlog was a delight. I spent at least 13 of my chilhood years in Deal: learnt to sail in the Downs Sailing Club, went to School in Sandwich, lived for a couple of years in the house RIGHT NEXT to the Kings Head. The old lifeboat, the Charles Dibdin, was about 45ft, sat on a tilting, swiveling cradle, and was launched down the beach over greased wooden planks, smashing into the waves. A sight to see. The sea in Deal may not look like a good anchorage, but in fact “The Downs” was a much valued anchorage for naval and merchant ships. The Goodwin Sands, about 3 miles offshore and a graveyard of over a 1,000 ships and countless numbers of sailors, provides an excellent breakwater. One of the reasons that the time ball was put there. A wonderful nostalgic journey for me, thank you.

Oh yes we drive down the M1, along the M25, and all the way to Deal...frequently..over the Kent Bump on Betty's bridge.
It's totally surprising to say how fascinating and pleasant it is to see The world famous Canal Cut Cruiser in Deal and Walmer...
Lovely to know you've visited this happy edge of England.
From our friends balcony we'd have been looking down on your van... we didn't hear you snoring!

Every 2-3 weeks had to cross the Channel on my business trips to Sutton in Surrey, it was either Dover or Ramsgate as entrance points into the UK, or sometimes Harwich, which was expensive so not preferred.
Many times, being early or late, had to pass time between Ramsgate and Dover waiting for the next place on ferry or Hovercraft.
Good memories indeed, including the pub, drank some pints there.....

Being from Down Under, (no, our part of it is not burning at the moment, we had our bit of panic in November) I am always left with a smile when Europeans and the English talk about long drives. A weekend getaway for us, the wife and I, usually involves about a 3 hour drive to and from, heading up to see the wife's family only takes about 8hours (about 700klm each way), while driving up to see dear friends who live elsewhere in the same state as us is a leisurely 2 days each way (about 3400klm in total). We, however, grew up with this sort of thing being the norm so it doesn't feel unusual. Whereas in England and Europe the same distances would take you through multiple countries or drowning in the Atlantic depending on which direction you took off in.

Hi Harry, mid north coast NSW here. Lol it is hard for some overseas friends to understand the scope of Australia. Truck driving hubby quite often used to wake me at 4.00 Sunday mornings asking if I wanted to go to Tamworth for breakfast. Tamworth is only 4 hours over the Great Divide. So we would head off for breakfast, back down the New England, back north from Newcastle. This was about 5.5 hours. Passes the time. We had our fires in October and November. Glad to hear you are okay. Keep safe. Cheers

    • @HarryP457
      @HarryP457 Před 4 lety

@@Vandemonium Agreed, our issue comes from the major distances involved, yours mostly stems from the very high number of other vehicles on the same piece of road. Personally I'm happy to have our problem, there's a much higher chance of having a womble at the wheel of a nearby vehicle when there are so many more around. Stay safe David, love your vids.

@@dianemorris6904 HI Diane. It's sobering to realise that this fire disaster as been ongoing for almost 3 months somewhere in Aus. Talking about distance, I worked on an IT conference in Brisbane quite some years ago and got friendly with a couple of Americans who attended. They wanted to do a bit of a driving holiday post conference so we asked what they had planned. Their idea was to drive up to Cairns, hit the reef, then head out to Uluru (Ayers Rock for non-Australians), then back to Sydney for their flights home. Ok, ambitious but doable, how long are you staying after the conference we asked. Oh, a week was the response... we (my fellow AV crew and I) lost it, big smiles, lots of chuckling, sorry guys that ain't going to happen. We explained that it would take them 2 days just to get to Cairns, that being about 1700km, let alone the rest of the trip (7106km for anyone wondering). They decided to fly and just stay in Cairns and region for the week but were totally surprised by the distances involved. Our relatively small population makes people think that Aus is a lot smaller than it really is.

If the third level is permanently under water, i guess they must of had to use divers, but then when they were building it, they must have thought, hang on a minute. The water is never going lower then this level we are putting so much effort in to build. Plus we are getting nibbled at by killer sharks (well maybe sardines really). 😁

8:27 Don't go and buy any fancy stands. Head off to a local lumber/hardware store and see if they have a 4 foot long piece of cedar wood, or a piece of pressure treated lumber, measuring 2 inches deep by 10 inches wide. Then cut it into 1 foot long pieces. You'll have 4 pieces of wood that will do the job, and they won't take up much space in the van. They'll give you some flexibility on height as well if needed by stacking them as required. Most likely less expensive then a purchased stand.

Nice cozy little van setup. All the basics you need for comfort. And what a quaint little spot. Thank you for taking us along.

Does anyone else do the cruising the cut guitar strum in their head before David talks on these videos?

You were lucky with the traffic and the weather. Lovely colours and textures; the pebbles for instance. Great filming and editing and a perfectly paced commentary. I like your sense of humour and freindliness.
