    I have to say, that my BMW dealer chief mechanic told me that the "old" version, which was not old anymore as it was re-introduced on newer models, the one with the little sponge filter inside instead of the vortex, is more efficient and does a better job than the vortex one IF, and only IF, you are going to change the little filter every 2nd oil change...this is what I am actually doing on my e90 320d M47 163HP

    • @carlwood5501
      @carlwood5501 Před rokem +1

      Correct Mr Z the reason this one is covered in oil is because its not efficient, i have just removed my original one on a 2001 330d 150k and it was almost spotless apart from the filter

      @@carlwood5501 I have a M47 136hp and i rather have the old one than this updated version.
      Everytime i change it the filter is dirty but the housing is pretty clean.
      Since its a bit of work to access the air filter and the filter is very cheap i change it everytime i change the air filter.
      I service the car every 6.5 - 7k miles or every year since i dont do too many miles.

BMW wouldnt sell it in state in which we have our cars now with everything dirty and on half-way to death :) Thats why i believe egr is not (or wasnt) a problem when engine works as it should.

    Hi George, great video. I replaced mine ages before my turbo blew. It's been a couple of months since I changed my turbo and I'm having a bit of an issue I hope you can help me with. The engine runs sweet and I'm getting no smoke from the exhaust at all now etc however, when I remove my oil filler cap or dip stick, there is a fair amount of white smoke flying out. I've been scratching my head over it for weeks as I'm sure it's not normal and indicates too much pressure? I'm double check but I don't think there's suction pulling the cap down. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

      @Salamethusayn Před 7 měsíci

      @anassnouri6129 hi mate, don't worry, it's normal. Just make sure your vortex/pcv isn't blocked. I just removed the internal filter altogether. They all have white smoke. That's the smoke that runs from the vortex/pcv valve, along the air box and back into the intake system. I've deleted all this now and chopped the air box off to put an inducting kit on. I made a blank plate to replace the pcv vortex, got a brass elbow on it with a pipe that runs back into the intake, so no need for a vortex filter any more . Cars way faster now 😜

      I have the same issue, changed turbo (that blow up) and togheter with the breather... I saw that my engine is "breathing" from the oil cap cus it was dirty with oil, than the same turbo belw up again and smoked white smoke and half a litre of oil (thinking that the engine did breathe throw the turbo, changed again turbo and breather). Checked compression and everithing, it was still breathing through the oil cap. The only thing that helped me was an oil catch can that i connected to the oil hose and the engine is not breathing anymore from the oil cap, but my impression is that she smokes a bit, but oil consumption is not so excessive. Someone can help me? i'm out of ideas, and the oil catch can whitin 1000 km is compleatly empty...

  • @georgiosz.
    @georgiosz. Před 3 lety +8

    Too many M47 owners complained of too much oil into the intake pipes because of this vortex type air oil seperator.Additionaly,charge air temperature sensor failures may occur because of this big oil concentration on the sensitive electrical component of the sensor with bad affects to injection fuel rate.Too much oil into the intake manifold could also produce soot and DPF cloggage dont you agree?The older loo roll type was more effective in oil gas filtering and prevent oil leakage into the intake pipes...The only disedvantage was the required maintenance every 20000-30000 km (filter replacement).What is your opinion on this?

    Yo mate I know this is a bit random but u seem to know your stuff lad just wondering if u could give me any advice on an issue I have with my bmw its a 2003 e46 320d it has the 136hp engine in it now and I removed the swirl flaps and the egr it dosent have the 150hp engine in it I had to change it out back in June and it pulled like a train and drove really well but ever since i changed the engine i had to get a new engine I've had a big loss in power its driving like it has no boost at all ive inspected the turbo and the boost pipes and checked for boost leaks and I've also checked all the sensors and everything is working as it should and the turbo is putting out the correct amount of boost that it should be making but it drives as if there's no boost it dosent pull whatsoever its completely dead just wondering if u know of any other reasons as to why its like that just asking u cause u seem to know what your an about I've had it checked by loads of diffrent garages and even they don't have a clue im getting desperate to sort this out 😂😂

      Engine and turbo are not communicating together which leads me to think ecu may need some checking and maybe programming. I may be wrong but this would be my first thought if everything is operating as it should

    I have a 2009 e61 525d(m57n2) i replaced the crankcase breather as preventitive maintenance but i still find alot of oil in the breather pipe that goes to the turbo and the engine eats oil, i went with febi and the vortex one, now im thinking of replacing it again, is the m47 and m57 breather the same?

    When I checked mine there was only a small amount of oil not like yours. However, there was no filter nor a vortex filter. Is this normal?

    • @mister.c4631
      @mister.c4631 Před 2 lety +1

      No that’s not normal. The previous owner had taken out the loo roll but you need to replace it with the vortex one. Leaving it open like that is detrimental to the engine

    Theres a nifty little trick you can do 😂 you still have the intake damper . This was seen as a mistake by bmw . You dont really need that . Remove it . Bit more noise but you get a better running engine in return

    I did the same, but for the N47 engine. Mine is more complicated to do, so I did it at the workshop.
    For the M47, so easy. For the N47, 3 hours, bigger part and bigger costs.
