  • in this video we change out the common common failure point for smoke issues on the 530D 535D engine this little breather system that Bmw decided to change later on in the years is designed to feed the turbos with oil and get the excess oil out of the crankcase and deposit it back too the manifold to go back to the sump itself we change this out and I also show you the new style breather which bmw advise you change to to save your turbos and let your engine breathe better and run much smoother

    Good day, I have recently taken over a 2002 X5 E53 M57 3.0D (right hand drive) from the in-laws after losing my job. The X5 has been standing for a while and to be honest I don't think it was well maintained. When we took it, there was little sign of smoke coming from the car but after the first 600km the smoke started pouring our from the back. I had a general service done and replaced some of the pipes that have started to perish due to the car standing in harsh sun hoping it was a leaky pipe or something similar. I have found employment again but this is the only mode of transport we have for a while so we need to make sure to take care of it.
    I am now looking to change the PCV but the locals (including 3 BMW dealerships) all tell me there is no different part for the 2002 models than the loo roll that is currently in there. It is completely clogged. Do you perhaps have a part number for me or a link where I can purchase the new complete unit and the housing? I will have to bring it into the country and want to make double sure I get the right part
    Thank you for a great video as well :-)

    I have changed this twice myself and once at the garage. The first time was because of heavy smoke and BMW explained I need to change it. I have a 2003 X5 E53 and one I have changed is the old one you mention and have cast. I have just changed yesterday but I have never had this explained to me. So looks like I will have to do it again.😢 Since getting that smoke 5 years back. Now I am really paranoid with this filter. Thanks for that explaination!!! BMW did not tell me.

    I've recenlty changed mine it was already the new type , but I wanted serviced non the less , I bought a Swag ccv vortex type . It was right around when the weather was starting to get cold. After I changed it my car started to smoke white smoke when cold and rpm hunting after the temp needle gets out of the blue it all goes away . Its m47 2003 320d is it possible that the new ccv is defective , the car does not seem to burn oil .

  • @Chrispage2
    @Chrispage2 Před 4 lety

    I dont know if you are still answering questions but I have old style breather filter and I have this thing that a lot of oil is going through intake, sometimes car struggles to go then squishes a lot of oil through that tube that comes out of air filter housing(below it) and it goes smooth for a while again. I thought my turbo was bad, but I removed it and took it to the shop and they said turbo is in a good condition.

  • @arturoz

    I just went online to search for the new breather and to my surprise they are sold as a whole set or you can buy the Vortex breather part separately.
    So my question is can you just take the filter part away and replace it with the new Vortex breather part and will it fit with the old plastic cover?
    I do understand that plastic goes bad anyway and also the red rubber sealing which as ju said can rupture and cause a lot of damage. So I understand that it's best to the change the whole set every time just to be sure.

    Thanks so much for this video. Going to do this on my e39, can't believe my specialist garage haven't replaced it but it seems they haven't. I have a bit of smoke and smell. Smell most obviously noticeable at idle when sat on the drive. If this is the culprit will replacing it mean problem solved or is it likely something else (turbo?) has been wrecked in the process? Car is not down on power as far as I can tell but it hasn't been used often for a long time so maybe I've forgotten how quick it was! I would not say the smoke is particularly noticeable visually, mainly the smell! Thanks again.

    Hmm strange here in Germany almost everyone downgrades to the Vortex Filter. It is much more capable of filtering the oil than the zyklon (you just upgraded to). Even BMW suggest in Rheingold to downgrade. The only downside withthe vortex is, that you have to change it regularly (every 30.000 km - max. 50.000 km).

    Do I need to replace this on a 2011 335D? I've been reading that the LCI 335D is just an empty housing with no vortex or loo roll. Do you know if it would have the rubber diaphragm? It seems that my CCV may be slightly clogged or is not catching all of the oil as I get a small bit of oil on the intake side of my tubo. I did add a catch can recently but I think there is still oil accumulating in my charge pipe and slowly dripping out from there. The turbo doesn't seem to have too much shaft play. I cannot find CCV part numbers (for the filter/vortex or the housing and seals) for my vehicle. I would at least like to replace the cover as the bit above the diaphragm has cracked tabs and I'm worried that isn't sealed properly. Might also replace the piping that runs to the turbo intake if I can find a part number too. Thanks in advance!

    Great videos Doc, great content and well explained. I need your advice m8 if you can point me in the right direction. Got e70 m57 and changed vortex filter last year but in the last month or so, on cold I have a whistle like or squeeze noise under acceleration for a short period of time and after disappear until next engine start or not even, sometimes until next cold ish start. Is there a chance to be a faulty diaphragm in the vortex? Will them go faulty on the new vortex model? Thanks

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Před 4 lety +1

      that's is correct mate it will be indeed fault diaphragm

    My M57 engine don't have this in the parts diagram. Did they change the valve covers on newer M57s? Like for the E70 X5 35d?

    Would a clogged vortex cause sluggish low down power? If I’m in 3rd at 20mph and put foot down the car bogs & then when turbo kicks in at 1700rpm it takes off

    • @andersh6933
      @andersh6933 Před 4 měsíci

      I have same thing my belief is yes you have a point. Sounds realistic that turbo needs easy breathin under 2000 rpm. I will look into it myself.

    Doc, what would be the effect of dropping an existing sponge filter on my Bmw e60 2.5d 2004 and putting this plastic like you in the video?

      Hi, I made this change on mine M57 engine, engine feels so much smoother, especially between 750-2000rpm. Power and torque comes smoothy now. Before change I had a problem with rough idle (rpm drops, engine shaking, vibrating) and power felt like (750-1700rpm) a dead engine and than booom (from 1700rpm) there is huge torque.
      My advice - buy genuine BMW part only! It costs around 100Eur, but it is worth it! I bought Febi and Vaico parts, because price was around 45-50Eur, but it worked for a few hundreds km only...

      @@petrsima865 I installed a new one, the engine works fine, the cold start is without bluish smoke, but it is strangely proud, it pulls fine up to 3000rpm and then it seems to suffocate, as if its power disappears, until it happened before installation, you have an idea what could it be?

    Great video mate! Ive recently just landed a cheap 2006 525d manual with 205,000 miles! what would your advice be to look out for? Ive removed the swirl flaps, egr and dpf and had it mapped and gave it a service. Seems to be running okay for now but is there anything to look out for? Have you had many timing chain failures on the m57? Cheers! Ed

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Před 4 lety +1

      mate timing chains are a common common issue and they do fail mate on these engines but usually only if remapped and there a big big job as there on the back of the engine on these mate
