I've only recently seen the double-long inserter setup and it's been a lifesaver for feeding assemblers that need four or more ingredients. And a Happy Christmas to Trupen and all! May you all find the balance you need to keep your factories growing and your social lives maintained. And a reasonably healthy sanity, don't skimp on that.

I love that if you try enough, there's always a way to improve according to your goals. If it's to have the simplest to look at and build design possible that allows 6 inputs and 1 output, you can do it in so many ways and some are more compact than others. It's lovely!

use Bob's Adjustable Inserters to change the pickup and drop locations of inserters. You can make them put the item on the close side of the belt instead of far side, or make them pick up and drop between 90 degree angle and many more. One of the most useful mods ever. Doesnt feel like cheat either, this should have been in the base game imo

Is the double Long Inserter necessary? Isn't it just easier to have 1 long and one short for 2 belts?

It's not always necessary, but when you need it, you need it

The double long layout gives more empty space to fit utilities like power poles (2x2 instead of 1x1 when tiled). However if your assemblers have high throughput it could bottleneck you.

I think the long and short inserters move at different speeds, so the double long setup is good when you need exact same amount x

Double-long's best part is about 3 belts on one side. When used with some normal inserters and undergrounds. Think about it.

It is also faster to build, many speed runners use it.
Just drag your mouse and dump four inserters between the belts and the assembler. No switching needed, and they are not that expensive.
