    I have teamed up with Ontaerial to bring you the best visuals in the industry. Our reviews are from an enthusiast perspective (Jakub), as well as someone who doesn't really know much about cars but likes them (Yuri). You won't find details about compression ratios here, instead you'll have real world opinions on what it's like to drive and own these cars.
    We go for a drive in this 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric and 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. We take a road trip from Toronto to Ottawa, which is about a 1000km round trip. We review both cars along the way. The Hyundai Ioniq EV has a range of 200km and the HEV has a range of 1000km.

    We spent:
    $45 in gas
    $19 in electric car charging
    $5 to park so we could use the electric car charger
    $80 in food / snacks / activities / coffee / energy drinks while charging or trying to stay alive
    Total - $149

      Mike Scott well they have to put the chargers somewhere. Parking lot makes sense. But they can't really make it free parking if your charging. Because that would be difficult to enforce. I guess.

We have a house in London (Ontario) and one in Mississauga, so i drive that route very frequently, maybe about once a week or every 2 weeks, but I never get to explore the rest of Ontario, and it's a gorgeous place honestly. This video makes me miss the times I used to go to Grand Bend and Port Stanley randomly in the off season at the beginning of Spring/Fall, similar to the time of season you filmed this, and it's so gorgeous. Very few people, and the weather is beautiful and overcast (my favourite). Sorry to ramble, but I just wanted to say I love this video. Hello from India :) I just wanted to drop a line thanking you for such an entertaining and, more important, positive video. I've seen so many negative videos about road trips in electric cars that the whole experience has become a bit toxic for me. The people in those videos faced the same problems you did: range anxiety, difficulty in finding charging stations, long wait times during charging, etc., but not only did you take it all in stride, you also pointed out how much better electric cars are to drive. Those of us who follow EV news know that modern electric cars are far ahead of their ICE counterparts; it's only the charging infrastructure that needs to catch up, and it will. Meanwhile, we need more positive videos like these to educate people about the possibilities and limitations of electric cars in a balanced, educative, and entertaining manner. Thanks for putting in the effort!

      If your country has an extensive rapid charging network it's not a problem.... the most remote point on the map from a rapid in Ireland is 25km and we have a single network with 1400 22kW level 2 stations in addition to the rapids. I've done 4000km road trips to Germany from Ireland with no issues. The next generation of rapids being rolled out this summer across europe are 350-400kW... if the car can take the power they can deliver 300-400km of range in about 10-15 minutes.
      The Ioniq sells in a 3:1 ratio in favor of the EV here. We're having supply problems... new orders are getting delivery dates in December.

      +cros13 wow that's awesome

    • @cros13
      @cros13 Před 7 lety +2

      Don't hold your breath for the 350kW cars, with the exception of the Porsche Mission E (and it's forthcoming Bentley cousin), nothing on the path to production we know of yet can take that amount of power. Most of the next tranche of cars due out are in the 100-170kW area. But still.. the infrastructure will be ready (Tesla will be able to use it due to their use in europe of our standard Type 2 connector for the superchargers here.... and *cough* they just happened to join the CharIN trade group behind the CCS standard last year). The Ioniq is getting an update Q1 of next year with a 40kWh class battery but it won't charge much faster than the current model ( which can charge at 70kW... although that was a 50kW you hooked it to ). The Kia Niro is due to get that battery for a BEV version and an unnamed Hyundai crossover is due around the same time.

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  Před 7 lety +7

      +cros13 yes we charged at a 50kW level 3 and the car was able to take in about 45kW. The owner of Solacity said that was the highest he'd seen other than a Tesla.

    • @richardpetek712
      @richardpetek712 Před 7 lety +1

      It seems to me that you prepared this "range anxiety" part on purpose, knowing that you could easily make those 218 km just by dropping your speed from 100 to 80 km/h. Some guy in Germany came very close to 300 km with an Ioniq EV, just by cruising at around 60 km/h or even less, search for "Ioniq electric 295" on CZcams . But for me, personally, I would rather arrive 20 minutes later than drive below 5% charge. This is the "red light" on a gasoline car.
      Air resistance rises with the square of speed, so, if you have a problem with range, lower your speed. Watch some video or do your math to see how much you need.
      But I agree, you video was fun.

    I really think full electric is the future, no doubt about it, but for the next 5 to 8 years (maybe less) I don't think full electric is still viable for long trips, having to spend hours waiting for the car to charge is really not worth it specially when a hybrid get so good mileage range and gas prices are low, at least for now.
    Driving a 2007 prius and I really love it, thinking on getting the ioniq HYBRID in a few years.

      Keep in mind they filmed this in 2017. Now that we're in 2019, there are a ton of cars (including a new one from Hyundai) that do well over 200 miles. Kona EV is 260 miles for a similar price to the ioniq.

      @@Isaac-un4cn the Ioniq starts at $21,000. It is significantly cheaper than the rest of it's competition. And it is honestly a really good purchase if you want to drive it for the next 5-7 years while electric cars drop in price even more.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 Před 7 lety +2

      Heated seats use a tiny amount of power. All the seats and wheel on uses less than 10% of what the cabin heating/AC Heat pump uses.... as efficient as that is.... the seat heaters use between 20 and 50 watts.... the main drive motor peak output is EIGHTY EIGHT THOUSAND watts. Even pootling along at 100km/h with no headwind on a flat road uses 12000 - 14000W.

      There is one fast charger in Smith falls and another one in Peterborough. 210km, easy to do if not traveling faster than 80km/h, since you averaged 12,6kwh/100km you would have been able to go 210km on one charge.

    • @YuriTereshyn
      @YuriTereshyn Před 7 lety +2

      Filip Bjurling so the rating was 208 km after a half our fast charge(to get to 95%) and a 25 minute level 2 charge (to get to 100%). Did you factor that into your times. Also would you try to push past your battery rated limit on the first try? We averaged 100 while on the highway however the bit of city driving brought our total average down to 80.

    • @jeff-fe9zl
      @jeff-fe9zl Před 6 lety

      Define "the best". It is hard to say, there are so many options out there and different design philosophies. That said, I think it is a great car (and will be better next year with the more powerful battery). I just recently bought a Honda Clarity, and honestly, if the Ioniq PHEV was more available in the U.S. it probably would have been the way I went. The 29mi all electric range is decent, and enough for 80% of the driving I do. Cars like the Volt and my Clarity that from a practical perspective are more electric cars with a range extender (50ish mile range) do so by having a large and heavy battery, which drops the gas MPG when running as a hybrid, putting them in the upper 30's and lower 40's mpg range. The Prius Prime and the Ioniq, with their smaller and lighter batteries, get nearly the same mileage (within a couple MPG) of the regular hybrids. Add to that a price difference (in the U.S.) of only $2500 between the Ioniq hybrid and Ioniq PHEV, and a $4900 federal tax rebate plus state incentives, and you can be paying significantly less on the PHEV Ioniq than the hybrid Ioniq (really, you can be at Elantra prices with the base Ioniq PHEV when you account for the tax incentives). Still, the Bolt with 230 miles is better than the 120ish of the Ioniq EV if range is important, the BMW i3 is interesting with all the modern materials (and available range extender which truly is just a range extender v. the engine in the Clarity and Volt), the Clarity and Volt are better if you want extensive electric driving but want the ability to go on long trips without any range anxiety (especially in the U.S. where large parts of it have very poor electric car charging infrastructure), etc. They all have great advantages (and some disadvantages), and "the best" overall is a rather tough call since it depends so much on your individual use of the car and really you can only find the best for a particular person's need.
