  • Hard not to put this at the top of the list for new electric cars. An excellent machine, very sophisticated and cheaper than a 30kWh Nissan Leaf.
    Hopefully this time I've put a lot of information in the episode. Enjoy.

    I have just bought this 28 kwh Ioniq (91,400 miles on it) two weeks ago. It's absolutely fantastic. I can get a good 130 miles out of it with 25 to 30 left on the GOM. I am now going to sell my Nissan Leaf Tekna 30 kWh which I have done 121,000 miles in it.

    Sorry Robert, but I completely disagree with your assessment of other 'proper' motoring journalists. Having read reviews from major motoring magazines, it's clear that the authors are not qualified to review EVs and can't wait to hammer the perceived negative points. Would you feel comfortable giving an accurate assessment of a La Ferrari's performance on a race track and would you consider it relevant to comment on its lack of luggage space? Mainstream motoring journalism is by and large obsessed with styling, acceleration, handling on the limit, trim levels and, despite horrific inefficiencies, how far the car will go on one tank of an incredibly energy-rich fuel the car maker had no part in producing. Conversely, real world mpg and emissions of ICEVs are never mentioned. It's about time mainstream media outlets started publishing reviews compiled by someone who knows something about what they're reviewing.

      +Andrew Bulman I think the term's been around for a while though I'm open to alternatives if you have any suggestions. Personally, never had a problem but then I don't get Mercedes s classes on tap for a living..... Drove to Scotland in a one litre city car. And lived..... Don't know what these journos are on about half the time.

It's understated, which is exactly what I think most people want. The interior looks lovely too. Give it a few years and I might consider one of these secondhand.

    It's super exciting to see new manufacturers and new electric models. Particularly when they make a good effort at pushing the envelope of electric cars. This definitely looks like a compelling vehicle.
    Btw, can someone explain how regen breaking works in the sense that, if you turn it all the way up to stop at the lights (like you did) do you then have to reset manually? Or will the car reset regen breaking when you accelerate? Never having driven an electric car myself, am I correct to assume that the car does it automatically? Otherwise it would be like driving with the hand break on if you forget to reset it.

      Regenerative braking slows down the car like engine braking in a fossil fuel car. It's a drag on the motor that slows down the car. For cars with easily adjustable regenerative braking you would need to adjust it to lower levels if you were using high levels of regen to slow down, but the accelerator always makes the car go faster. With regen that is not integrated with the brake pedal, when you lift off the accelerator, the car slows down. More regen means it slows down more. Less regen means it slows down less. Zero regen means it coasts.

    Hi Robert. Just to say firstly how much I enjoy your Fully Charged channel and your style of presentation, but also to say that your review of the IONIQ triggered me to watch many other similar reviews and to finally switch my 11 year old diesel Laguna for the IONIQ EV which my wife and I are delighted with. We think UK chargers still have a long way to go but as this is our 2nd car, mostly for shorter journeys we just charge it at home. Next we'd like to see our power company install solar panels and a power wall - this is happening in parts of the UK, in particular in Yorkshire - we wouldn't pay for such an installation as it wouldn't pay back in a reasonable slice of what might be remaining of our life time, but it would be worthwhile to the power companies who would use the stored charge to overcome peak demands.

    We have recently purchased an Ioniq EV, and wanted to share this video with friends and family. One thing that is mentioned in the video, is about the price ov EVs in 5 years from when the video was made, which is this year. Certianly here in NZ, EVs are just as expensive, if not more expensive than they were 5 years ago. The Kona EV is twice the price of it's petrol cousin. Some VW ID4s have arrived in the country and they are selling for $90k and the VW Tiguan which is a similar size petrol SUV is $47k, so substantially cheaper. I wonder how long it will take before EVs to reach price parity with petrol.

    • @engleblerthumferlumpadinck6536
      @engleblerthumferlumpadinck6536 Před 2 lety

      I doubt there'll be price parity any time soon without serious government interventions. Electric vehicles are considerably less complex than ICE yet they're so much more expensive? Really??
      I strongly suspect more wars will be fought to try and keep us consuming the black stuff - there's just so much more money, control, influence & power linked to the oil addiction. (Plus, they hate the thought that you could generate your own fuel from solar).
      I'm about to ditch the diesel in exchange for my first electric - a 3yr old Hyundai Ioniq. Range anxiety, and battery degradation my only worries from here on in.

    The best place for regenerative braking is fully integrated with the brake pedal. When one wants to slow down, one presses the brake pedal. The first part of the brake pedal travel/pressure uses regenerative braking. When the pedal is pressed harder, the friction brakes do more of the work. Regenerative braking is always maxed out long before friction brakes contribute significantly to the braking. In the best implementations, the regen and friction braking are smoothly integrated into the brake pedal. The EV1, Prius, and many other EVs and hybrids work this way. Putting aggressive regenerative braking on throttle lift is wrong for multiple reasons too complex to go into here.

    We got the non-plug in Hybrid version (1.6 Petrol, smaller battery but same electric engine) of the IONIQ - I wished we'd waited for the plug-in hybrid one but it wasn't out in December when we needed a new car and unfortunately EV doesn't work for me over long distances (I drive to northern scotland regularly from Yorkshire). I'm *seriously* impressed. It's pretty much identical to the fully electric version, except rather than paddles for regen, it's just linked to the brake. When coming down long hills it really does top up the battery if you keep your foot slightly on the brake.
    ONLY flaw is under carplay - the phone has way too much echo to the person calling you. So when you make a call you have to disconnect the Carplay and use Bluetooth. But it's the only flaw in a pretty much amazing car. We've done over 7000 miles in it now and would definitely have another.

    i really like the regen paddle shifter idea. here in the Northwest US we drive a lot of mountain passes. I let my Subaru "hang" off of downshifts to control speed on desents with out using the brake pedal. I can imagine an advantage on some hilly drive where it would be useful and fun to control the regen properties from fully on to off for efficient gliding.

    First, very glad to see more EVs coming to market. It is absolutely needed. If anything is disappointing, it's the lack of speed and enthusiasm by the old manufacturers in moving to EVs. They have too much inertia built up in making fossil burners.
    All EVs can potentially have a zero regenerative braking mode; call it coasting. It depends how their controls are organized. On a Tesla, setting regen to low reduces it significantly. e-Golf and presumably other VW/Audi/Porsche have adjustable regen too, including low levels. Their regen control is left-right movement on the shift lever, which they usually call Tiptronic in cars with multiple speed gearing. For maximum energy efficiency, regen should be avoided whenever coasting is more appropriate. Regen always involves energy loss compared to coasting so it should be minimized.
    Batteries are still the major cost driver in EVs. Batteries are the key to lowering the costs of EVs. That's why it's crucial to be building large battery factories, as Tesla is doing. Watch for other car makers to do so. If they don't, then they're probably not serious about EVs.
    Fast charging is DC since it connects directly to the DC battery pack. There is no AC fast charging. Though the input to the fast chargers is AC, the output to the car is always DC.

I do think you get some sort of fast charging (3h on an 11kw charging station - maybe not as standard, which it should have, or maybe it's not available everywhere which would probably be inexcusable...) While my Hyundai i30 was having its yearly maintenance done the dealer offered me a test-drive in this fully electric Ioniq and i was so impressed that my next car just might be an electric one.
    While i had more of an issue driving an "automatic" after 20 years of owning only manual cars than the fact that it was electric, i have to say that i loved the way the it was calm and docile in ECO-mode, but reacted to the slightest movement of the accelarator-pedal in SPORT-mode. And while it's about as fast as my gasoline powered car to accelerate, the immediacy of the power-delivery is something that i haven't experienced before. I just have to see what the situation is with electric-cars when it comes time for me to part ways with the 2012 i30 i'm driving now...

    WHat they have done on this car is simply map the accelerator pedal minimum position (ie, not pressed) to the "zero torque" line at the driven wheels. Hence, the motor adds just enough torque to overcome drag at any given speed, which results in a feeling of "coasting". More sensible, imo, is to map the min driver demand to a larger negative torque demand, and just "one pedal drive" saving all that messing around with paddles etc. Yes, that takes a bit of getting used to for drivers brought up on conventional ICE powertrains, but they soon get the hang of it, and once they have, most people actually prefer the simplicity of it!

    • @WolvenSpectre
      @WolvenSpectre Před 7 lety

      There are still some emergency and control instances that standard breaking works better and there are ways RGB systems can go down while the vehicle is moving. Until they lick those rare problems, they keep standard breaking as sort of an advanced emergency break.

      I do. And I really wish my LEAF had both coasting (no regen at all) and high regen for one-pedal driving in stop and go traffic. It is amazing how quickly you start to feel like having to hold your left foot raised half the time in the city during rush hour begins to feel like pointless, unnecessary drudgery. And when I want or need to drive my LEAF as efficiently as possible, I have to use neutral all the time. A paddle to switch between no regen at all through to max regen would make my driving both more efficient and more comfortable.

    • @brothersoulshine
      @brothersoulshine Před 7 lety +3

      If the battery on our Leaf is charged to 100% then the regen braking doesn't work, I guess because there's nowhere for the regenerated energy to go to. I do notice this after setting off down our hill after an overnight charge. Once the battery is down to 95% or so then the regen works as expected. I suppose that the energy has to go somewhere. In an ICE car and in a fully-charged electric, the energy tends to go into warming up the brakes.

    I'm so inspired I'm out to test drive one now. It isn't cheaper than a 30kwh Leaf at present because the Nissan dealer will give you an extra £5K towards a deposit. Update, back from test drive, loved it but I am afraid I think you used the regen paddles slightly incorrectly (they set the level of regen and can be used to change it so you don't have to flick them each time). The price is coming in at £26K after the government grant. I can geta 30kwh Leaf for £21K or a six month old one for around £16K so quite a difference. It does appear that the Ionic will go somewhat further on a charge and the sales guy said the weather doesn't affect the range very much (the heater runs off a separate system so maybe he is right). I think I'll wait a while as I am sure they will be cheaper next year.
