Over the last several years I've reviewed many different manga and anime. So I figured I'd look back on all these stories and give them a ranking based on how I felt looking back on them today!

I do agree that One Piece panelling is not the best because of how packed each page becomes with all the information but I think it should be noted that out of all the mangas you ranked, Oda is working with the manga that has by far the most story to tell and it doesn’t help that back in the days he could work with a lot more pages but some years after serialisation started they restricted him to only 17/18 pages per chapter. On top of that, people complain abt how much longer the story goes on so he’s really forced to do this type of panelling.
I 100% agree with you. I dont think oda is at fault here with the paneling. Oda created an amazing Story and I dont know any other Story as great and consistend as this one. Truly S Tier imo, no doubt.

If that was his only criticism I find it REALLY weird he didn't make a similar comment about HunterxHunter. One Piece pales in comparisson, HxH often times seems like a book 😅. And if that was his only criticism of One Piece, then I kinda... I couldn't really take the rest of his assesments seriously. But then again, it's his opinion so it's okay. Bcuz while FMA and Mob did nothing for me, they meant a lot to him. It really is a very subjective topic.

The Bleach manga is one of the best examples on using white space to enhance the art. Another manga I read, Fighter Juline, had so much of it that I legitamitely couldn't tell what the hell was happening in some scenes because there was just so much white, but Kubo actually struck a pretty good balance.

@@heftymagic4814 Has nothing to do with him being an authority. It was literally his first time reading the series. He didn't grow up with it or anything, he just read and reviewed it and came to those conclusions himself. So to say that he's also doing "mental gymnastics" about Kubo's use of black and white is ridiculous.
I really do hope you get your hands onto reviewing Vinland saga, it seems to me that such a human story really appeals to what you have loved within the stories you have reviewed so far. Awesome list!

@@westy1637 I love the direction Season 2 took. I wasn't really invested in the story at first and even dropped it after Thorfinn's fight with the Bandana Giant. But I'm glad I picked it up again cause now that it has less action the fight's that do happen feel that much more impactful.

I'm honestly surprised OP wasnt on the S tier. Not because i dont think the placement in A was fine but i remember watching through the series and it being possibly the most positive review and easily most highly explored IP I've ever seen you put on this channel.
In subjectivity, you can use this list to see where Mark's preferences in media lay. Stories that alter his outlook on life positively are the ones that sit atop his list in Mob Psycho and Berserk. It's not just about how much he likes it, it's about how much of it sticks with him in daily life. Maybe that's why OP didn't make the cut?
@@michaelhuit Mark clearly stated it's the panelling of OP in the manga that brought it all down for him, and Mark's not wrong. At times Oda crammed so much drawing into pages they can become quite cluttered.

Making the reading experience difficult, unfortunately effecting how you view the story no matter the quality narratively

Regarding JoJo, I recommend for you to read Part 7. Unlike the previous 6 parts, Part 7 was released once a month, rather than once per every week. This allowed Araki to make a better artstyle, writing and plot. At least 80% of JoJo fans agree that Part 7 is the best out of all released till now.
Part 7 is absolutely fantastic, but I'd say the best of them all is Part 8. Jojolion has its issues, but goddamn, I don't think Araki has ever written a better character than Gappy.

personally i consider part 1 and 2 A tier, part 3 and 4 C tier, and i stopped there because of the poor quality.

Ayy Mob Psycho 100 is also my favorite anime. The character writing in Mob Psycho is insane. Each of the main characters was handled with such care, with each having a satisfying resolution in the final arc. Oh and also, Reigen is the best anime character i've seen in a while

What Urasawa work does he like? Also I need to read those series, because I’ve been pretty much only reading the Shonen Jump app and some first volumes like FMA and Berserk. Like I watched the anime of Monster and thought, “no, this story seems like I should enjoy it in manga format”. Is Monster better in anime or manga format? Although I’m weird, because I feel like the only person who says the Hunter x Hunter manga is better than the anime, not even including the succession war.
@@thomasffrench3639 He's read Pluto and mentioned a few times he loved it and Urasawa's style of storytelling. I watched Monster years ago and read it last year but the pacing is a lot better when you read it. I'd only recommend the anime to someone that doesn't really read manga.

Well this video is a treat. I've spammed this channel's comments section countless times to explain why Mob Psycho is my GOAT favorite anime, and Berserk is hands down my favorite manga of all time. I'm very happy to hear Mark seems to agree.

Mob psycho isnt good. First few episodes were promising but then the author diverted from his original ideas. Blew his emotional content and comedy by breaking mobs and his "teachers" relationship. It shoulve been muuch shorter. 3rd season was a complete nothing burger with nothing charged.

If I had to recommend any manga/anime series, it would be Yu Yu Hakusho. Also written by Togashi, the same person as HunterXHunter. Surprisingly enough, it also has one of the best dubs out there, alongside Cowboy Bebop, which is another series you should look into.
I'm currently watching Yu Yu Hakusho and dear lord it's a hidden gem. It makes me wonder how it would change the world if it was rebooted or reaired with God tier animation.

Samurai Champloo is another I'd love to suggest, from the same people who did Bebop. I personally enjoy it more than Bebop myself.

Yu Yu Hakasho is fantastic. Dub is superior & OML the OST the only real downside is that the last arc kinda fizzes out from this massive setup of a war arc in demon realm but then ends up just being another tournament. Ik why it happened bc Togashi was severely burnt out & wanted it to be over & he deserved the break but that arc while still great & offers a perfect ending that arc screams rushed
Man I really wanted to finish this video but One Piece NOT being S tier because of Oda's cluttered panels seems like some nitpicky BS. Just take more time to look at the panels instead of getting overwhelmed by them. Oh well/.
SProper panelling is a huge part of manga. especially an action adventure based. Seems like right reason to criticise.
Berserk is an incredible manga for sure. If you want something that I'd personally put on its level (probably a bit higher for me), I'd definitely recommend Vagabond. The artstyle is insanely good and the journey of Musashi Miyamoto is something that has connected with me more than nearly any and every other character in the mediums of anime and manga
For me top 1 Manga and Anime were Gintama.
The best characters, world, music and of course..
The final movie brought me to tears and I finally fell in love with it...
(This is "S" tier of course)

I personally really liked the narration scene in Hunter X Hunter. I think it increased the intensity and magnitude of the scene. The character's brains were working so fast and so many things happed at once that things appeared in slow motion. I think this scene would have flopped without the exposition over every single detail. I think it really increased the cataclysmic nature of the scene and the last arc in the Anime and made the scene especially great in the anime. I haven't red the manga, so I can't speak there but I think it was amazing.

Let me just inform everyone just because a series is well written than others, that does not mean you’re obligated to love it more either.
Just because something is better written that does not mean you’re going to have a personal connection with the story or the characters.
Nobody should honestly judge you for liking a show or preferring a series that people considered low written,
compared to something that is best written! You go with what your heart belongs too. 😃

Yea but that's what seperates the best from you favorite. Look at this video. The better written series are at the top and while his favorite of the new ones is Mob Psycho he knows berserk is the best.
I like Bleach more than One Piece even though I admit it's not as good. It's mostly about the paneling and the way the pages are spread out, I don't feel good when reading One Piece and sometimes I don't even want to continue and just stop reading.

Really appreciate your view of how you approach a show. By getting into the mindset of the author it lets you approach each series with a different mind set, but also being able to say you can appreciate a good piece of art (like LOTR) without actually “liking” it, you can throw in some objective commentary while also allowing your own personal feelings to give your own twist on things.
Love your stuff! Keep up the good work and can’t wait for the Dragonball Z video at some point this year!

I really would like to agree but I don't know season 3 was a miss for me it didn't really hit me like the first 2 seasons

i get one piece anime not beeing top tier for a large portion of the series it wasnt that great, but manga not beeing S tier after watching all of your reviews was surprising to say the least

I love your videos, I may not agree with your opinions sometimes but I always LOVE your takes. The reason for that, you put in so much effort and love into your takes/reviews. I love this tier list because everything here is something you have put effort into understanding
The only take I didn’t love was the king piccolo arc in OG Dragon Ball. I freaking loved that arc bc it made it feel like there were actual stakes for the first time and that people could and would die. Ofc going into the series I knew Krillin would be back just from watching Z here and there as a kid, but seeing shenron die after thinking he was the penultimate being was so cool to me. Plus the fights are goated

Your colossal review always popped up in my recommendations and was one of three reasons I actually started AOT and it is the best thing I have ever seen so thank you for that! And I am so excited for your DBZ review.
You should try checking out Vinland Saga. It's an historical, seinen manga set during the peak of the viking invasion in England. It's a beautiful story that encompasses revenge, tragedy, violence, and -- most importantly -- atonement, using its ruthless setting as a backdrop for the messages of the series. In a way, it's similar to Berserk in terms of quality.

I’ve read alot of manga and watched alot of anime but Berserk is by far my all time favorite
One Piece would be my own Number 1. I get that the paneling didn't do it for you after a certain point, which I think is a fair point, but the series did something for me that nothing else ever really did during a dark period of my life. It gave me a reason to keep living. As someone that used to suffer from really bad depression, something that made me want to keep going in life is gonna forever hold a special significance to me.
It also being about following your dreams with those that you can call family also holds deep personal significance to me, along with it just being a well written story with world building unmatched by most other fictional series, and you've got my favorite piece of fiction of all time.
I had the same connection with One Piece than you did. Truly the artwork that empowered me to keep going forward.
Naruto is number one for me
What's crazy is that as much as I love One Piece, I felt like I had to come to a personal decision: do I love One Piece's world building as much as I love the character writing of Berserk?
To this very day, I can NEVER get the Eclipse out of my head. To this day, no manga had me SOBBING as much as Berserk did as it went down and how I was begging through tears for it to stop. Never had I experienced a manga that told me the villain was evil but also slowly tricked me into liking him and wishing every time that I saw him that things could be good again(knowing that it never would be). Never had I seen a romance as raw and realistically complex and goddamn beautiful as Casca and Guts. Never had I seen a badass and phenomenally developed female character as I have Farnese. Through all the horror that's made me gag, the intimate moments that have had me crying or cheering with pure ecstacy, to the goddamn most beautiful artwork that came from Kentaro Miuara, Berserk changed my life forever.
I still really enjoy One Piece. In fact, it's slowly climbing the ranks of my favorite shōnen series. But as a young adult, Guts' struggles are somehow more relatable. He's the biggest underdog in his own story. He's not supposed to win, but he keeps fighting anyway. With how HORRIBLE his backstory is, I'm surprised he still can fight to survive every day. I'd give up; I know that about myself for sure. But Guts has changed and truly healed so much as of right now for me that I only want what's best for him. I want good things for him and to win for once. No character writing today compares to Berserk for me. No dark series with a compelling message speaks to me like Berserk can
one piece is amazing and its message is clear yet great: Freedom and dreams. Every character in some way either relates to or opposes freedom, whether it be the late gol D roger and him achieving his dream, or oden and his dream of making wano open, katakuri and his fear of being rejected for his mouth and love of donuts and tea, or even a minor character like ivankov, the whole story center's around being who you are and searching for your dreams, and so while the story may be completely fantastical, its message is one I'm sure a lot of people can relate to.
However, with that being said, I have to make assassination classroom my no. 1. Never have I seen an anime balance and develop an entire classroom so well in such short time, with initial goal of killing koro-sensei remaining but your feelings about him changing throughout as you learn more about him and his true history that makes the pieces start to fit together yet it also delivers on its premise in such an emotion and sad way, yet still manages to pull of a happy ending after the timeskip without compromising koro-sensei's death and its impact. The side characters are also very well written, with the principal being an amazing foil to koro-sensei with his own unique backstory, and the villains are a healthy mix of unredeemable scumbags and genuinely interesting characters like the reaper.
And it does all of this in 2 seasons.
One piece not being in S is criminal... huge miss on marks part. Also i recommend dorohedoro, which is also an S. Can't state how disappointing it is for the paneling keeping it out of s but ig thats just personal preference.
The thing that pisses me off the most is how much I know for a fact mark loved the series when he was going through it. I swear if you hadn't made one piece your dip into the world of manga and read it now after you consumed all these series I'm willing to bet it'd have a very snug spot in S tier, hell maybe even being THE S tier. I wish you goodluck on your journey of anime/manga but I'm definitely checking out. Adieu ✌
I love how the entire time I kept wondering "wait where is it" and then at the very end he said the best manga hes ever reviewed, Berserk and I knew right then and there yeah it can only be number one

well that was before reading the other series since One piece was his first attempt at branching out from his comfort zone. And all the others in the list he only read them much later on. And even during the reviews he brought up the paneling issues.

I know its a stupid thing to say, but i feel wierdly betrayed, i was watching his full review series for a loong time, i really thought that the series that changed his profile would at least be S tier.

I think the fascination with tier lists is how they let you get an idea of what specifically people value in their fiction, or to find different opinions or points of view on a story they enjoyed. They can help identify biases, patterns of thought, and it's always fascinating. I have a few differences but hey, it's entertainment and everyone's got their own opinions, lol.
God, I wish you could review Jojo part 7 Steel Ball Run. It's the best material Araki has ever written and one of best experiences reading manga I've ever had.

Hey Mark, do you have any intention on reviewing any of the Gundam series? I know its mostly anime only content but still. Mecha is by far and above my favorite genre of anime and would love to hear your input on any of the series in the Gundam Universe.
Long shot, but I think a huge series Mark is missing is Tokyo Ghoul. The manga is one of the best ever written and it'd be fascinating to get his perspective on it.

I would really appreciate Mark taking a look at Vinland Saga & Vagabond, the two series that have the most in common with many of Berserks themes. You have the Big 3 of Shonen, time for the Big 3 of Seinen :D

Any shot you'd ever cover Yu Yu Hakusho? It's one of my personal favorite anime's, with an MC and cast that's incredibly interesting to psychoanalyze, plus it's easy to recommend the English Dub as it does some awesome, albeit unneeded, heavy lifting that makes it stand out as the premiere way to experience the story in my opinion due to how it brings these characters to life, and has an insanely talented cast of voice actors such as our boy Justin Cook in what I consider one of the best casting choices and moments of voice acting ever, Christopher Sabat, Linda Young, and several other familiar faces in anime in side roles such as Kyle Herbert.
Yusuke Urameshi is the main stand out of the anime though. He's incredibly refreshing and is just an overall joy every time he's on screen, and how he impacts the lives of others, and fights to impact his own world view, is just some of the best writing put to Shonen anime and I would love to hear your thoughts about the series in general.
Yes!!! You basically summed up why YYH is my fav as well. Mark is a bit of a weeb and his editor, Ajay, is a giga weeb, but there's really no better way to experience it than the English dub

Is this reallly all the series covered on the channel? It's so crazy, I've been following Mark's videos for years and I never realized he's only managed to scratch the surface of shows out there. Quality work really does take a helluva lot of time.

As an "online-only" One Piece reader, the paneling never was an issue for me. I do agree though that if someone reads it physically, especially in volumes, the panelling does become quite an issue. Personally that would in no way be enough for me to rank it down a tier as my values heavily lay in other places but this is your list.
What I can *really* not fathom is putting AoT in S after those last X chapters. The ending to a story is the most important part and calling this butchered would be an understatement. Even when being nice, having this any higher than A is just weird to me.
Let's wait for the ending in anime. Why are one piece fans do jealous of AOT? One Piece as far as first 50 episodes are considered is so basic and if it take 100 episodes to get good how can you compare it with a show that is so well written for the 50 episodes?

Regarding the series itself, I used to love AoT so much and I considered it one of the best works ever made... *until* it ended. It is the GoT of Manga.

@@herculeanlearning3857 Because this video is a manga video and I am talking about the story/plot. The thing that matters the most by far to me is the story. If we *were* to talk about the anime's then it'd be a different story. I have stopped watching One Piece (the anime) years ago because it has gotten so bad. If the AoT Anime does an original ending (which I doubt) then we'd have to talk about it differently which would happen once it reaches the end. I however was talking about the manga and there it has ended.

One piece is S tier the panel work isn’t that bad compared to a lot of shit it’s still very readable and when the time came for it the space was given only when necessary not every other page there’s no wasted space it’s a super long story and it can’t mess around with a full spread art piece every other page putting One piece in A for that is fucking trash

Nah I call bullshit on this tier list. As someone so invested in the intrincancies of story telling I expected more from you. Like, you put Mob Psycho, which fails at plenty of basic things but attempt to hide them with darkness and struggle, or Attack on Titan, which is a narrative mess with plenty of deus ex machina in the second half of the series, both at S tier. Yet, you place One Piece, which in your own words from your reviews is a masterclass in storytelling, in A tier due to packed panelling. No shit? I'd love to see how the other mangakas manage to panel with such an incredibly complex story as One Piece.

Not gonna lie, I'm shocked you didn't put One Piece into S tier. I agree with your issue on paneling later in the series, but there are still so many more incredible, stand out panels and art in the series up to the current arc (just look at Roger's laugh or one i think is critically underrated, the lighting of the lanterns during Luffy vs. Kaido).
Anyway, my personal SSS+ tier manga is Monster and i really hope it's one of the next you choose to review. That is the story that truly changed my outlook on what manga was and what it could do. Love that series so much.

As some one who watches the anime at would say it’s still A simple because of its inconsistency of arcs and characters
I read it all digitally on a big monitor so it never ruined my experience but I could really see how the paneling could be alot worse when read in the physical version which was his choice of consuming the series. The books are kinda small and are bad for panels getting swallowed up by the spine.

Too long, poor pacing in anime, poor paneling in manga, mediocre animations for anime before wano that is 850+ episodes with some good animations sprinkled here and there, standard music simple most basic plot for first like 100 episodes. It does pick up afterwards but I can watch at least 2 anime in that time. One piece fans are so insecure who think there opinion is absolute that there favourite anime is the best and all others are inferior goes on to show what impact the show had on you guys.

The people who hate one piece are who don't watch or read op and complain about how long it is. I don't wanna comment about the series that I haven't covered like AOT and beserk.
The people who hate onepiece are consistently toxic and half of them never start OP and remaining never completes it or abandons it in the starting stage. A rear case of people who caught up with op while consuming others complain about op due to personal preferences are the only people who can talk about flaws of op. But they generally enjoy the series having some complaints on pacing. That being said I really enjoy every series as what they are.
It's like comparing good food. Don't compare it, Eat all the good food. One at a time/or 2 or 3 at a time at max. Not over doing anything is the key.

Thank you for understanding the true beauty of bleachs' most underrated arc. The fullbringer arc is amazing on a first time read, when you are as clueless as ichigo is, watching he be slowly mentally and emotionally tortured and until he hits his breaking point. He believes everyone he loves has turned on him, and in his ultimate hour of need the family he created, the people he changed in soul society, come to repay what they owe and then some. The TYBW arc, much like the arrancar arc, has some of the hypest moments in the whole series, but due to Kubos health at the time some aspects didn't get the spotlight that they should have, making the arc overall feel a bit bloated as well. Personally Bleach is in my top 5 with how much time and research and love I've put into the series (2 short fan fiction novels and currently dming a soon to be year long bleach 5e dnd campaign) so knowing some beach fans understand the fullbringer arc is nice
The fullbring arc is definitely better than most people give it credit for, and alot of its hate, is it was in the anime post Aizen between filler arcs making it feel like filler... plus the animation team made Ginjos twist too obvious compared to the manga.
But it still has a couple issues, like imagine if Ichigo just talked to his dad or something?
Also the fact the soul society sent who they did is kinda fanservice... their mission wasn't to support Ichigo, it was to cut him down if he didn't ally with them. But they chose his friends to send? Kinda silly. But could've been fixed with just some dialog from Yama and Shunsui or Unohana simply saying they sent his friends hoping ichigo would be more likely to side with them, than with anyone else from soul society. But without that being headcanoned into existence? It just makes Yamas decision to send his friends seem poor.

I have a manga suggestion. You’ve been covering a lot of shonen recently and some of them are my favorites like mob psycho and FMAB, but I think it would be cool to cover steins gate, which is psychological to change up the genre
